The mark of a man, or so the old advertisement used to tell us. This week I shave with Old Spice shaving soap and after shave from the early 1970's. I'm really enjoying my new brush with a Sinbad knot.

Well, howdy Mr. Mark.
Your delightful nautically-themed shave brought back memories of my dear Papa who was the captain of a Yankee Clipper in the 1870s. Many was the time he took me up into the crow's nest for a lovely view across dear old Boston while we enjoyed a cup of your delicious English tea. Of course, he had a full captain's beard, but he did insist all of his crew were clean-shaven and well-groomed, just like your good self.
Thank you, Fanny.
Every self respecting Captain should have a full but trim and tidy beard and a clean shaven crew 👍 All the best.
Classic. I remember this soap from the 70's.
Fantastic. Isn't it so iconic? I really did enjoy that shave and I've been humming the tune from the advert all week.
Hey Mark good to see you again.
I hope you and your family are well and you have an amazing weekend.
Hey, Samuel. I have been a little delayed in replying to you. My weekend was very nice, that kind you; I hope you had a good one with not too many household chores.
Hey Mark, don’t worry about it.
I hope you have an amazing week.
That's another great knot Mark. I really like the scent of Cold Spices as well. Excellent job as always Mark.
It is lovely Chris. I'm looking forward to trying all the other Old Spice clones but Douglas has knocked the ball out of the park with this one (again). I think he is one of the best.
@@FriendshipShaving He certainly is. Have a great day Mark!
Hello Mark. Lovely video again. Good to see you're in good health and a happy bunny. Great shave. Stay safe.
Hey Andrew. That was an interesting shave; I thoroughly enjoyed doing the comparison and I'll definitely do some more of these. I hope you've got a bit of sunshine. It's lovely here. Take care.
Hi Mark, when I was nowt but a lad I used to save up me pocket money to buy me Dad a bottle of Old Spice for Christmas. Ever since then I've associated the smell of Old Spice aftershave with Christmas time. Your mention of the Old Spice advert brings back memories of Henry Cooper and Kevin Keegan advertising Brut aftershave. Of course my favourite was always, star of Hammer films, Valerie Leon advertising Hai Karate! Good to know the old Old Spice smells better than the new Old Spice, if you know what I mean. Have a nice weekend my friend.
That's really lovely mate. What a nice thing to do for your Dad! Our Henry was always the Brut man for me, although perhaps have been getting on a bit by then. Now, he was famous! Those Hai Karate commercials were rather bizarre. Of course, I remember them but I have refreshed my memory, via TH-cam. If only it were true! 😃
Hi Mark- Great shave and vintage soap/aftershave reviews; thank you! Nice-looking lather on the vintage Old Spice soap; the mug, lid, and aftershave bottle all look pristine. That was quite a good deal from eBay! I hope your weekend is off to a nice start; feet-up is the only way to go! Take good care and be safe and be well. Best regards, as always, my friend!
Good day, Mike. It is a lovely bright late afternoon here; it's beautiful. I've just had a relaxing shave and I'm sat on ,you bed with the sun streaming in the window. I hope you are having an equally relaxing afternoon and hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend. Be well, mate. All the best.
Hey beaut looking fab. Love the old spice smell reminds me of my grandad xx
Ah, that's so lovely. I used to go out with a girl who wore a little. It was a bit weird but we were really young and she was so lovely. 😊 Happy days.
Lovely brush. Great old and new comparison. Video enjoyed. Be safe Mark
Thank you, Roy. I'm glad you enjoyed it. I really enjoyed joked making a comparison; it was very interesting and got me thinking. All the best, mate.
I love vintage old spice! Great for fall.
Mate, that Old Spice aftershave is great. It lasts for quite a long time! I keep sniffing my wrists 😀 Beautiful. Americans have invented some absolutely fabulous things!
Congratulations Mark ! . That was a great shave . Cheers
Thank you, mate. All the best to you. 👍
Fascinating comparison of old vs new. I have some vintage Old Spice splash which I really do enjoy. Reminiscing about the 70s, a simpler time for sure. Have ordered a few of the SuperShave X to try.
Thanks mate. I have wanted to try the original soap, since I got into wet shaving. It certainly was a simpler time in the 70's. It was a good time.
Looking forward to watching this one. Hope your well!😀
All good thanks mate. Enjoy 😊
Great shave Mark, the lather was good for its age, the splash is fantastic, have a great weekend buddy 👍 🤓 👍
Hi John. Thanks mate. Sorry about my delayed reply. Take care 👍
Cracking shave, Mark.
I will be in your bodyguard when they come for you, mate!
You're my man, Lee 😃 Thanks mate.
Thanks you for the comparison Mark. I really need to try that PAA Cold Spice CK6 because I remember in early 70s my father and grandfather using the original Old Spice Mug and Soap as well as After Shave and I just loved it so much. Have a great weekend Sir :)
Nice one, Sean. The Old Spice mug and bottle have certainly stood the test of time. I would say that they are probably the most iconic shaving item, razors aside. It's great that we can see such an item and think of our grandfathers and fathers. Nice 😊
Howdy Mark! I never knew those Old Spice bottles were in the shape of a buoy, but that makes perfect sense now that you mentioned it. As Paul Harvey used to say, “Now you know the rest of the story!” 😉
Crackin’ vintage shave with a product that will always remind me of my late Dad.
Cheers 🍻!
Psst. Don't tell anyone, mate but I had to look it up; when I read they were in the shape of a buoy - it made perfect sense. It was a very clever idea. I love that we can have something in our dens, that reminds us of our forebears. I hope you're enjoying your weekend mate. Take good care. Mark.
Mark hope your well & absolutely adored the video & watching the commercial brought back loads of memories from the 70s Makes you feel old now thou ...
Thank you, very much indeed. I'm glad your really enjoyed the video - those old commercials really can make a fellow feel old. It seems a long time ago. Well, it was but on the other hand it's gone by quickly! 😕 I hope you're doing well. Cheers.
Hello Mark, what a pity we could not join the scent of old spice during your shave today. Seems you really enjoyed it. Nice shaving brush by the way.
Take care and have a nice weekend 😉
We need a screen that emits smell. Now that would be good 😃
Thats a beauty, i remember my grampf having one of these, he always had old spice for christmas, its all he would use. Brut was the other best seller, i wonder if they ever made a soap. Great stuff.
Nice one. I don't ever remember a Brut soap. I'll have to look for some old advertisements or on eBay. The hunt is on 😃
I bought a glass bottle of P&G Old Spice back in about 2000 or 2001. I still have it! I didn’t buy another bottle until a few years ago, after the switch to plastic. I immediately noticed the change of scent. The newer one smelled like a cheaper, harsher version of the same thing, if that makes sense. Love the older stuff, much nicer!
Thanks for sharing! I had occasionally heard that the switch to plastic affected the scent, now I know for sure. I bought a bottle of the new Old Spice Original, it was a few quid at my local chemist, after a few days of using it, I had a rash all over my face where it had been applied. In this case vintage is most definitely the best! Cheers👍
HI good review I use old spice shave soap myself I love it very exellent soap in all fairness the soap your using when shaving with old spice is nearly 40 years old I know it was new old stock but it's bound to lose a bit of the sent etc with the age of the soap .good review tho take care
Thanks Carl. It's nice to have the input of another Old Spice shaver. I was surprised, for it's age, how reasonable level the scent was on the soap. It was just that slightly off putting scent note that didn't make it fantastic. The soap quality is excellent, isn't it. It's as slick as anything, post shave. All the best. 👍
Can’t help but whistle the old spice tune 😎 Thanks Mark
Steve, I've been humming it for days 😀 I'm doing it again! It's a great tune. Enjoy your weekend, mate. Cheers.
Fantastic shave!
And yes, the Aftershave's scent is just phenomenal and if it is P&G's Old Spice before the formula change, it'll have the "Shulton" name on the bottle. That one has the same scent.
After the change they replaced many of the scent oils and extracts used with synthetics, removed the "Shulton" name and there is a very marked difference.
Once you have used the Shulton though, its very, very hard to go back to P&G's rubbish.
(I'd rather pay shipping, handling and custom charges to get PAA's Aftershave shipped)
P&G claimed it was for longevity but my old vintage aftershave (all used up, I have only the vintage EDT about 50ml to 70ml +/- left now) lasted far longer than the modern day P&G's "Original Old Spice". I remember I could still get a whiff from the old Shulton four or so hours after application while the modern day version is almost completely gone by two or so hours.
We all know they reformulated to maximize profit and lower cost.
Thank you Steven, for such a full and informative reply to my question. I put a dab of the vintage aftershave on my wrist and was really surprised that it still smelled quite strongly after about 5 hours.
I find it a great shame when companies spoil a good product, that is already profitable, because of greed and a lack of integrity. That's how I fell, anyway. I hope I'll be lucky and find another second day hand bottle reasonably priced. I will use this one sparingly! Thanks buddy.
Apparently, they reformulated the ingredients as a result of the switch to the current plastic bottle. They should have kept the older glass one!
Hi Mark,I've just bought exactly the same soap on ebay old but new unopened.I paid £55 and also purchased 150ml original aftershave for £20.It's just something i've always wanted to try but never thought i'd take the plunge. Can't wait to try it.Take care mate.J(ust been on an old spice website and it says our designs are from the late 60's.)
That's fantastic. Me too, always something I wanted to try. I find the soap in the mug has a slightly odd scent, but once it's lathered and on the face it's lovely. The aftershave is awesome! I like our mugs, from the sixties, the best. 👍 Enjoy.
@@FriendshipShaving I was born in 67 so now i'll have a birthday soap to go with my M1.For the price of it it will only be getting used a couple of times a year but i'm over the moon i've bought one.The guilt has now faded over the price.lol Have a lovely evening Mark.Take care.
You too buddy. Cheers.
I have three of those old pucks. I use it about once a month so that should last me a while.
Oh, that'll definitely last you. The performance is great, but do you pick up that odd, slightly off putting scent?
Friendship Shaving I haven’t smelled anything off putting? I’m not wild about the scent but it’s fine. I like how it performs and makes me think of my father when using it. I also find that it takes an amazing amount of water.
Thanks mate. That's interesting as another fellow remembers the off putting scent. Maybe it's just the way our noses work. I'll experiment with the water content. It certainly was a nice lather.
Thank you.
You're welcome. All the best you you and yours.
I grew up using Old Spice shaving soap and really miss it when my supply ran out in 1996 or so. There is a difference in the scent from the older version to the newer aftershave. With the resurgence of the shaving community I'm surprised that P&G hasn't brought back the shaving pucks again, they're producing bar soap now.
Are they indeed. That's good, it may be the kickback against plastic that has prompted the soap. Maybe they'll take that extra step and make a shaving soap again. I think they make a cream I think.
Soap on a rope! They should bring that back. In the shape of the Pope. 👍 And in Mark's signature scent :Essence Of Torquay. 😊
Now, here's the thing. I used to have a Pope (joke) soap on a rope, as a kid. I don't know why, none of us are Catholic! Soap on a rope were very popular and a better choice, to my mind, than having plastic bottles full of liquid soap. Eau de Torquay is under development: essence of washed up seaweed and driftwood under a summer sun. 😃
@@FriendshipShaving Ha ha! With top notes of fish and chips! 😂
You're so right about those liquid soaps in plastic bottles. 👍
Moggridge you can still get soap on a rope on Amazon from Musgro , it’s not pope shaped but a bit whittling with a razor blade and I’m sure you’ll have a masterpiece 😀👍🏴
@@callumcraig3664 Ha ha! I feel my carving skills will be needed! Thanks.
It looks like you really enjoyed that shave. It was great to hear how you got the name for the channel. I always assumed it was because you seem like such a true gentleman. I really enjoy the research you do regarding the history of the products. I may have to try the Cold Spices from PAA. I am also going to have to check out the website you mentioned about Old Spice. You used a phrase a “kitch & a koodle” - I am sure I got that spelling wrong. Is that a UK saying for like a kiss and a hug? You mentioned the guys middle name being Lightfoot, which made me think of the Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot and his song The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which is about a shipwreck. You may be familiar with that. It seems like you have an affinity for all things nautical. I always enjoy your videos Mark! Thank you for sharing them with us. Take care!
Good day Todd. I haven't seen a video from you in a few weeks, either shaving or health. Are you well, my friend? I did enjoy this video and I'm really glad that came across.I enjoyed making the comparison between the soaps. I hope there will be more of those to come.
I lived in South Wales for many years where spoken English includes some Welsh words. Cutch is one of those; it means cuddle. I realised it might not be understand, so I went to say cuddle and slightly mis-pronounced it.
Gordon Lightfoot! - I knew it was familiar somehow. It's a very unusual name. I'm now trying to think of another famous song of his. Oh, it's on the tip of my tongue. I was about 6 when he was very popular!
Fantastic shave Mark!
The Cold Spices soap and aftershave are about 90-95% the same as the Shulton Old Spice scent wise - just the menthol sort of blurs the scent a little. The version from Procter & Gamble has an absolutely AWFUL scent, at least to me. I’m honestly thinking about throwing away their version of the aftershave and cologne because I hate them.
I liked Cold Spice but feel it would be better without the menthol, at least over here where it is only hot for one week each year 😂 I have heard that the P&G version is different but I didn't imagine it could be so vastly different, or so bad. It's a shame they had to mess with the original - no doubt they were trying to save money and maximise profit.
I like this brush handle very much. Please Mark put a link in the description of the video if you can.
Good idea, George. I will but here it is, as well:

Thanks Mark!
I want to try Barrister and Mann's reserve spice. I have heard that it's a good take on the original. Have you tried it maybe?
I think I tried it a very long time ago. I've heard recently that Reserve Spice is a very good take on the original. I would like to get a sample to test it.
If u want to get the smell a bit better on the soap put a few drops of the after shave on to the soap It makes the soap smell a bit stronger mark
That's a good idea, mate. Ta.
Nice. I think the soap was kinda simular to the Os after shave. But to tell the truth. The old formula is better, but i like the modern version also
Yes, I mis-spoke slightly there. It is the very first scent of the aftershave that smells wonderful and, to me, not like the soap but in the dry down it all matches well. I'd love a soap that smells of that first waft 😊
I have two vintage old spice pucks one from the 70s and one from the 40s..and they perform incredibly well, Every time! Someone needs to remake this amazing soap 100% authentically even if they go for the more modern scent it'd be great..
A puck from the 1940's. Wow, Clint that is something else. I just smelled my brush, that I last used in the Old Spice soap a good few days ago. It smells amazing!
If you've ever seen Star Trek - we need to invent a replicator. 😃
@@FriendshipShaving yes it's the Early Milk Glass Mug the ship is "The Friendship" goes perfect with the red and white Friendship shaving brush👍 coincidentally...
I have a puck of shave soap that is called Lightfoot's. Do you think it's the same guy?
You never know. It is a very unusual name or maybe it's named after him. Maybe there are lots of Lightfoots, but it does seem a strange coincidence.
Great shave- yes, I would absolutely buy and horde a “ old spice puck and splash”,
if a company came along and made a remake. So hard to find a puck , and not spend 50$ for 3 or 4 pucks. Do wish Shulton of India would give a throw at it.
Yes, me too. I'm going to try some of the popular re-imaginings of Old Spice, if I can get some samples. I already have one on the way. But, once I find the best I might have to take it out of the pot and put it in my other Old Spice Mug. Is it all made in India, now? I don't think oldspice.com sells shaving products. It's all a bit strange.
Old spice makes a shave cream in the tube in original, lime and musk. It’s made in India and quite good. It’s cheap but I found the original doesn’t quite smell like the original. About as good as can be expected.
Thanks Prentiss, I'll have to try one of those tubes. Cheers 👍
Wow, I’ve already ordered the Cold Spices based on this. It didn’t take much convincing to be honest, as I just tried their Awesome Sauce which is like a more potent proraso green (the splash scent, not the soap scent.) I couldn’t be more pleased. Great shave!
You made me laugh, when you wrote: " I didn't take much convincing, to be honest." 👍 I think you'll really like it. I was very impressed. I'll be getting a sample of Awesome Sauce, soon. I'm really looking forward to trying it. Cheers.
Hi mark,
How you doing mate?
You are spot on what you said about the soap.
This soap was my go to soap in the 70s.
There is something not right with the scent, almost nasty. But the performance is still good.
I wouldn’t buy it again.
It’s quite strange because the aftershave is still great.
Take care mate.
Hey, Michael. I'm doing okay, thank you for asking. I hope you are all well. I'm really pleased to read your comment about the soap. It is how you describe it and it spoils the soap. As you wrote the performance is great but that scent is odd. Thankfully the aftershave is just the best ever! That initial scent is stunning and it lasts well. Thanks for the information mate, I really appreciate it. 👍
£30, bargain. I just missed out on one recently but managed to get a Vintage Imperial leather shave stick, unused and in original packaging for a bargain price with a tube of Colgate brushless shave cream. Just tried it earlier and had a wonderfully scented and slick shave , even better hardly used any. It's left the bathroom full of Imperial leather scent.
You don't see Imperial Leather shave stick often. Not at all. You did well there. It's for posh people! I seriously believed that as a small child, thanks to the advertising. Colgate used to do a powdered soap that you would sprinkle on a wet brush before lathering. Going way back now, mind.
Hi mark
Great video 💈👍🏼🪒and shave..
How is the quality of that handle boti good quality is wood sealed and nice?

It's good, Alan. The finish is pretty nice on it and the wood appears to sealed. I know nothing about wood finishes, so I couldn't hazard a guess as to what it is finished with.

When I got this one, I did think the handle was just a little small but I do find it very comfortable to use. Just to give you some idea of size, the handle height is 60mm. ☺ Cheers Alan.
Hi Mark,
Another enjoyable video 😀
I just tried my new Stirling Spice. The scent is very pleasant although a bit different than I imagined of the original. If you have tried it I would be interested in your feedback. If not, I would be happy to forward some, along with a modern tube.
Cheers 👍
Hi Steve. I haven't tried Stirling Spice and I would really appreciate a little; thank you for the offer. I enjoyed doing a comparison between the two soaps I had. I feel it would make a good series to shave with the original and make and comparison. I'm at happy-mark@live.co.uk or via Facebook Messenger. Cheers, mate. 👍
Stirling spice smells the closest to the original mark
Thanks mate. I'll have to get a sample and make another video 😃
Hello Mark, you're indeed the master of vintage products shaving, may it be soaps, razors, whatsoever. 30 sterling for sure a good deal. May I ask yr opinion. My stock of TABAC is ending, I like the scent. What is another strong scented tobacco soap in yr opinion. I do not smoke, but like strong tobacco smell (not the smoke). Tks, Mark. With cheers fm Singapore+
More Tabac! 😃 Sorry Achim, I'm not that up on the stronger tobacco scents, but I don't think anything will beat Tabac in that regard. I'm afraid I can't help this time.
@@FriendshipShaving Tks Mark, I'm pretty satisfied with Tabac. Cheers.
I’ve been hoping Gillette and OS would collaborate to sell a razor and soak gift set.
Oh David, that would be very good, wouldn't it? Yeah, I'd like that. 😃 All the best, mate.
Please DO NOT RUB THE MUG!!!!
Okay buddy 😂
