The Elephant Delinquents of Pilanesberg 🦏🐘

  • We delve into the fascinating story of the elephants introduced to the Pilanesberg reserve in 1979. Most of these magnificent creatures were orphans of culling operations, which meant they lacked essential role models to teach them proper behaviour.
    🐘💔 Without guidance, the young bulls started misbehaving, bullying females, and attempting to force them into mating. This resulted in worrying consequences, as the younger elephants became aggressive, attacking rhinos and even numerous tourist vehicles. Tragically, 40 rhinos lost their lives, and one human fatality occurred due to their aggressive behaviour.
    💔😢 The root cause of this delinquent behaviour was the frustration arising from the rejection the young bulls faced from the females. The females recognized that the younger bulls were not yet fully mature, leading to their refusal to mate. In their heightened hormonal states, the young bulls reacted severely, leading to unfortunate rhino deaths and other aggressive acts.
    But this story isn't all doom and gloom. Over time, efforts were made to address these issues, and the reserve's management implemented various strategies to help the elephants integrate and develop healthy behaviours.
    Join us as we explore the intriguing lives of these magnificent creatures, their challenges, and the inspiring initiatives taken to restore harmony in the Pilanesberg reserve. 🌿🌍

      Prehistoric Creature here’s a spit of facts for you. Male African elephants weigh about 13,000lbs, while a male white rhino weight about 5,100lbs
      Elephant tusks are stronger then the strongest bone in our body unlike rhino tusks.
      Rhinos can’t do massive damage to an elephant for two reasons. 1 elephants are literately twice a rhinos side 2 they both have very thick skin so they couldn’t do much but tease each other anyways.
      Usually the elephant would attack first and get a good charge and might just pierce the rhinos skin. Elephants being tall, can easily just crush a rhino effortlessly with its own body weight. Elephant proportions make it easier to move, so they would be more agile in a fight. Hope that clears it up..

      This rhino was probably lucky to survive (we don't know how badly he was mauled there):
      th-cam.com/video/a8rWoDducpE/w-d-xo.html
      There's no recordings of actual fight to death I think, but every now and then they find dead rhino with deep stab wounds delivered from above, clearly an elephant's signature. So it does happen sometimes. Aggressive bull elephants in musth, like the one in video above, are the usual suspect.

    • @metalgear-
      @metalgear- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mandrak789 - Yeah. Hearing the Rhino cries is maddening. May that Elephant burn in HELL

    • @Mandrak789
      @Mandrak789 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Well, elephant was in musth, they are very dangerous at that time. Rhinos habit to stand their ground and not to retreat easily isn't doing them any favor either: they cannot do much against determined big elephant.
      There was also a series of violent rhino deaths in South Africa's Kruger park in the 90s: about 10% of their whole population has been wiped out by one group of young elephants. Reason? In this case, not the musth, but something else rather bizzare: elephant population at that time was increasing too fast, so the management decided to establish control by killing number of adults. It turned out that the young who were left to grow up alone, without any authority who would've taught them to behave, literally became delinquents. You know, walking around all day long just looking for trouble; and they picked poor rhinos as favorite target. Lesson learned, I guess.
      These are relatively rare accidents, though. Yes here and there some rhino fall victim to an angry elephant, but generally, they co-exist in peace and mutual respect.

    • @metalgear-

      Yeah, you could say the elephant chose someone he knew couldn't do as much as one of the others, but when all those others fail to do shit to the elephant in return, that makes them all the punks, not the elephant.
      It shows that when it comes to it, the rhinos are impotent. And so the elephants reign over them.

      Then again, maybe if a team of rhinos team... against one elephant, days later they'll have to deal with the elephant's team of elephants teaming against them.
