I don't think I have space in my house to store ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY TWO lipglosses. And I don't have enough LIPS to use them before the expiration date.
@@kimkat17 same thing I was thinking it's all cheap stuff that they buy in bulk that is actually Dollar tree quality if not cheaper and people pay $100 for a scoop.. completely crazy..
@@jilliankavinsky6340 It would literally be a better investment to stick that money directly into a real slot machine. Even if you lost it you'd get a free drink, a trip away from your couch, and no extra pointless and cheap clutter you'll just have to end up decluttering later.
@@kimkat17 oh it’s totally drop shipped garbage. It’s very sketchy and I wouldn’t want to be using beauty products that I can’t verify the origin and quality of. And I say this as someone who loves blind boxes and gets a ton of dopamine from gacha type stuff. You can be picky with your vices.
You just unlocked a memory for me. When I was younger, I had a friend whose family didn't have a lot of money. For people's birthdays, he would take a scoop out of the household junk drawer, find an old box, and give it to you as a gift. 😊 He was sort of famous for this. You would get some hilariously questionable stuff!
@Ryanneey Reminds me of a present I got for my friend once. We got a pinata and filled it with random little things to make him laugh. He was expected candy, but got a rubber animal toy, a bike license plate that said "I
thats so cute. when i was younger like around 14 id love to do “trades” with my freind, wed just give eachother random little things we had that we didnt care much abt but knew the other would like. its honestly how we reconnected! it was so fun wed meet at the park and just present eachother with a big gift of random things
if one of those lip glosses costs 75 cents, someone in the production chain is a slave. people have forgotten what things are actually worth because slave labour in production chains is so common that we forget what labour is worth. if everyone in the production chain got paid a humane wage, no lip gloss would cost 75 cents that's crazy to me
this is such an important point. also, the idea of putting something that sells for 75c or a couple dollars on my mouth makes me cringe because I wonder how much lead and other horrific "ingredients" would make their way into my body. people need to care more about their bodies and wallets (and the planet and workers), in my opinion
yeah thats what always gets me about this. Makeup doesn't materialize out of nowhere, somebody is being exploited for the sake of gambling + entertainment.
also infortunately even when products cost more, the workers are not still paid any more, the added cost for the consumer instead goes in the pocket of the brand owner as higher profit.
yeah if you think about it for .2 seconds it's somehow so obvious. The plastic tube, the cosmetics themselves, the label and it's design, the construction of that all together, the huge box with 200 of them in there that gets shipped to a distributor that gets shipped to another person who ordered it on Wish or Temu who then sells it in these lucky scoops? 75¢. Really. Who are we kidding?
you mentioned this in your video, but i feel like gambling is becoming so normalized for kids... like gacha games, blind box figurines, collectible trading cards etc. i went to china earlier last year to visit family and there were so many stores just with blind boxes and different kinds of trading cards. even before they can legally gamble they have ways to replicate that kind of behavior... it feels a little icky tbh :
I mean, it’s always been a little bit of that around. I remember in the late 80s in Europe. They would have the mystery little tiny plastic babies. You didn’t know which one you got until you opened it and there was so many to collect and then trading cards you never know what you’re gonna get
Some time ago I watched a video that said that gambling addiction is really bad in Asia 😮 That has to come from somewhere. Unfortunately, it works. I heard that EA gets several hundred millions each year with Fifa Packs and counterparts in other sports games.
@@shawnaripariCases like that make me feel like a grumpy old man because when I'm shopping, I want to buy what I'm looking for instead of playing games.
And if you listen to the Michael Lewis podcast series on sport gambling, you learn how prevalent that is amongst high school boys…just in time for them to download Draft Kings as adults and absolutely ruin their lives.
It always enrages me to see lucky scoops with "licensed" character merchandise that is so obviously bootleg, yet being sold at close to official prices. And most buyers are none the wiser, as many people aren't aware of how to spot the differences 😭
it reminds me heavily if those “mystery boxes” you see at conventions. literally cant go to a fandom con and not see one. theyre usually just cheap bootleg merch but since its a mystery box theres like, a legal loophole so the seller is in the clear. AND THEYRE SOO OVERPRICED!! thats why i always just head straight to artist alleys, cause usually youll find even more kinds of items + you actually know what youre getting + its good stuff and youre directly supporting an artist
@cal-c7i this causes me further concern. If the quality already isn't good, it will probably degrade faster, and then you're putting way expired glosses on your mouth, or giving it to people whose skin and health may not tolerate the low quality as well
I'm familiar with how Japanese lucky packs/bags work since I used to actively participate in Lolita fashion. There are two types of lucky packs. First and most common one, is basically a brand will put together some packs with random odds and ends that are end-of-line, slightly damaged or defective items, or production samples that cannot be sold in-store. The lucky packs will guarantee you get a specific number of each item (e.g. the pack will contain 3 dresses, 1 skirt, 1 pair of socks and 1 hair accessory), but you don't know for sure exactly what you will get. The other option that is slightly less common is more like a "special set", in Lolita fashion it was typically a limited edition run of a specific print (sometimes preexisting, sometimes not) made in a cheaper version of the garment (e.g. the retail dress at JPY30,000 would come with full lining and more details than the special set version) and will include all the accessories you need for a basic outfit (e.g. a blouse, socks, a hair accessory and sometimes a bag or a piece of jewelry). Not that it brings any specific point to your video but I thought I'd answer since you were asking the question. :)
Thank you so much for sharing!! I really appreciate hearing about your experience and also a fashion example, which I didn't really discuss in the video
Came here to say this too! I’ve only ever bought new years lucky bags from brands that make more casual j-fashion clothes, which tend to be more on the side of “getting rid of stock”. I’ve ended up with some… interesting Milklim tees that way 😂
@@skip4576 Oh gosh, did you buy from Milklim after 2015? Their management changed and their design quality went way downhill lol But yeah in general, I also wear Japanese fashion and I find lucky packs, the non-special set kind, to be a great way to add pieces to my wardrobe that I might not have picked out for myself but I usually end up getting a lot of use out of, and if I don't like them, which is rare, I take them to swap meets or sell them to my community members. For special sets, it at least used to be a great way to add a whole outfit to your wardrobe for a good deal, which is especially nice for beginners or if you want to add a new substyle or color to your closet. I actually have a video on my channel opening a special set fukubukuro from around 2015, but it seems like they're not making full special sets like that anymore, which is unfortunate.
“Lucky bags” in Japan are a new year’s tradition because it’s a way to sell last year’s merchandise. The mystery + discount + limited chance creates a sense of urgency in customers. People go crazy for them, especially for brands like Angelic Pretty because their dresses are like $300 new, and a lucky bag is a chance to get an entire outfit for the price of 1 dress or less.
I got a winter puffer jacket in a ¥5000 Lucky Bag (about $50) along with some other stuff and that jacket lasted me a good 10 years. Japanese Lucky Bags are the best, and some shops will even let you peek which is even better
Yo I was just thinking Angelic Pretty. Tho they used to make actual exclusive prints for lucky packs, and even whole sets (like Candy Sprinkle) this year we didn’t get any special lucky pack releases and it’s sad
I haven't finished your video yet, but I got really excited to comment as a Japanese fashion enthusiast - I've bought and seen many lucky bags! Fukubukuro, you pronounced it right! :) Traditionally, they're a great value - a bundle of items priced at far below what the items individually would cost. The "catch" is that you don't get to pick the items. However, there is a guarantee of certain things - I'll use clothing as an example (as that is where my experience lies, in niche Japanese fashion styles). Clothing lucky packs usually involve a guarantee of certain categories of goods - ex: a guarantee of one dress, one shirt, one cardigan. Sometimes they are more specific (stores may separate packs into light colors or dark colors, or there might be a lucky pack focused on dresses, while another is focused on shirts/skirts/separate pieces). Sometimes they have lucky packs separated by size so you know your items will fit you (significant, as many Japanese clothing is one size only). I've also seen lucky bags for items that can't be sold - factory defects, small spots or stains (and I do mean small - Japanese quality control is very thorough), or misprinting / pattern issues. Finally, there are lucky bags where you *do* know the contents, and everyone gets the same bundle, it's just a good value. Not too much luck involved there - maybe just for getting it before it's sold out. I find (clothing) lucky bags are great if you're trying to build up a wardrobe, like if you're trying to get into a particular fashion style. Otherwise, you're better off just buying what you want. In Japanese fashion communities, which have a thriving secondhand market, lots of people will end up listing their unwanted lucky bag pieces for sale in the early months of the year :) In conclusion: usually the value of a lucky pack's contents are guaranteed, and the gamble is whether it will suit your personal tastes. Some of my favorite, most-worn items are from lucky bags, and so are several pieces of clothing that I've donated or sold :p edit: gambling is big in Japan however, such as with "gacha" (basically gumball machines of mystery items, where your chance of winning something good is super small). This has translated into gacha-style video games like Genshin Impact (which make their money from people gambling) but it's in lots of other areas of life too. Most concert tickets are not first come, first serve - it's a lottery for a *chance* to buy tickets. The insidious nature of gambling seems to be growing, and as bad as that is for everyone, it worries me most with regard to children. I walked through Walmart the other day and was honestly appalled by how many children's toys are in blind boxes or feature some luck mechanic. :(
thank you for commenting! I've heard from a few folks about different aspects of lucky bags and appreciate your additions. I didn't realize that some bags guarantee specific items and that some aren't really a 'surprise'
The self defense ones are crazy. Some of these items aren’t even legal in some places. And for the things that are legal everywhere there’s so much crap on a keychain that it’s not even useable for self defense
i know specifically with the “cat ears” ones as well people have said those cheap ones are flimsy and break so they wouldn’t protect you in an emergency either. and i doubt the quality of the other equally cheap items and their efficiency…
@wlk3607 yep. In England I believe you can’t carry anything stabby like the cat ears or that big spike. I’ve even seen tasers in these. The most we can have is like an identifying spray which doesn’t hurt people it just dyes their skin. Eventually people are getting in legal trouble for these.
30:38 speechless... paying $20 extra for the person you paid $50 for a bunch of cheap stuff - that looks like free swag from a sad county fair - to post a video of them boxing your order?? I can't comprehend any of this. We're killing the planet FOR THIS??
Like, imagine you did something and a TH-camr made a video on you and then sent you bill; same logic! They're asking YOU to pay THEM to make content out of YOUR order, it's insane!
For some reason, I absolutely despise the word "scoop." I don't know what it is, it makes my brain ache, it tastes metallic, I feel it at the back of my throat like when you have a cat hair stuck in your mouth. But this video was really interesting, so I fought through it. I'm one more "scoop" away from getting in a fetal position under my bed and crying myself unconscious, but it was genuinely worth it. I love being de-influenced and not wasting money on making the greedy richer.
Right there with you! I hate the mouth sounds that come from pronuncing words with c/k or p in them so “scoop” is a nightmare 😂 I enjoyed the video nonetheless!
The last one I got is a bone and gem one for my birthday. And it was about 60$. They did put a lot of care into it, I got a hand written note that said happy birthday as well.
Lucky bags actually evolved from lucky red envelopes which was a tradition where people would pay a token fee (typically used to maintain the shrine they were at) to pick an envelope with a saying or proverb, and sort of use that to guide their attitude or inspire their feeling for the upcoming year. It was basically a mindfulness exercise that the shrine guardians offered in exchange for a donation to keep their shrine running 😊
Lucky scoops are honestly my kryptonite to watch but after buying one (of hair scrunchies to split between me and my daughter) I was satisfied forever because no one needs that many scrunchies. It was like 20 scrunchies which isn't even crazy for these.
Overconsumption aside, I think the markup on mystery scoop items is accounting for the entertainment factor. Kind of like a claw machine, where many people know that you can just buy the plushie outright for a cheaper price online, but still play it anyway for the gamification
I def agree and appreciate your call-out of the gamification/gambling aspect of lucky bags. Tradition aside, it's looking like another avenue for hypercapitalist consumerism.
The crazy thing is I can see getting sucked in because I love watching adventure calendars! I have never bought one though! It’s so weird like I’m never going to buy one because I need to know what I’m getting but it’s like I want to be adventurous so living vicariously through someone else! Having to go fragrance free has actually been amazing for my own over-consumption (no more subscription beauty boxes for example, and not tempted by advent calendars, because I may not be able to use the products)
You can actually see what's in the calendar before you purchase on the site, so not exactly the same. I would say subscription boxes fit the analogy more as they don't show what's in them until after you purchase.
Hmm.. In German speaking countries, adventcalenders are a tradition that is almost 200 years old. It was lightening candles on a cartwheel first, to teach poor orphans counting while also "sweetening" the time they had to wait for Christmas. There are people who read a chapter of Luke from the bible each Day, and there are cheap Adventcalendars for under 5 bucks with Tiny chocolates or even christmassy pictures. So there IS a way to do Adventcalendars "right" while I see no way to do scoops "right" (without the gambling aspect) but the large, luxurious ones? Yeah, there is something to it.
As someone who was raised by a very money sensitive family (to say it as nicely as I can) and who gets to have a good spendable income now as an adult, this is crazy to me. I get the "need a treat" feeling but 42 treats at once ? It would feel overwhelming.
@@romanesybel8956 Right? A treat for me is a £1 iced coffee, and I’ve been trying to cut down on that because even that adds up over time. Having so many items as a “treat” at once would be so overwhelming and give me terrible buyer’s remorse
I'm really glad you posted this! Recently I was tempted by lip gloss scoops on Etsy, but I stopped myself from purchasing because I had begun watching your videos and made myself really think about it. And I used to be REALLY into the Korean lucky bags I used to get from One's and similar shops when I lived in Toronto, oh and the $5 surprise bags Ardene used to have. My god, I spent SO much money on those. And it was just *stuff*. Stuff everywhere. And years later, do I remember ANY of it? With the exception of an Ardene scarf I have kept and has survived every move and wardrobe purge I've ever done, NOPE.
I totally forgot Ardene used to do surprise bags!! You brought me back with that one. I've also purchased those and completely forget what I got. Glad to hear this video resonated with and extra proud of you for doing a double take on that scoop, girll!
I have genuinely never heard of this until your video! Probably because I don't have tiktok or instagram, but still this is so bizarre. It reminds me of those weird videos where you watch people pretend Open oysters for pearls and you know it's fake?
My mother was born in the 20s and grew up on a farm in the northern US very poor. On the rare occasion they went to the store, her dad would let them get a treat. She used to say how she always wanted the “what nots” which I thought was a candy. I finally asked what it was. It was a grab bag. Her dad said absolutely not as it probably had bad candy or an easily broken toy. Instead they shared a Hershey bar with about a square each and a Coke. They remind me of grab bags. I’m sure she would have loved them.
I’ve seen lucky scoops in passing, but I started feeling more like participating when I saw it in the stationery community! Reminds me of the mystery bags from the Sanrio store in the 2000s.
Haha i was on stationerypal sanrio lucky scoops and cultpens mystery box. I resold some of the items and use a lot of the items as the items come individually super expensive to Turkey. But they do trigger that consumption temptation. I use a lot of stationery unlike makeup. i put on daily full makeup but there is a limited daily space on my face unlike notebook. And i write at least 5 notebooks a year. However, I'm not saying mystery box is healthy. It was just a guilty pleasure. And even stationery, no matter how much you write a day, there is a limit what you can use.
I loved getting the Ipsy bags like over 10 years ago now. I was rarely happy with anything I ever got out of them. It lasted about 6 months and I just stopped. It wasn't worth it to me even when their bags were like $10, I cant imagine paying anymore for the junk I used to get out of it.
I was an Ipsy subscriber for a little over a year. I got a moisturizer and a mascara with every single order. I changed my preferences numerous times and still got these 2 items in every bag. I'm faithful to the the two mascaras I've worn for the last 10 years and gave pretty much all of them away
Ipsy was such a scam!! I tried it for maybe 3 months and felt so ripped off I quit 😒. They were all just products they couldn’t get rid of anywhere else tbh.
I heard someone say that since most of the items in the Ipsy bags are free samples, you’re paying for the bag not the items…I’ve never looked at Ipsy the same way again.
this is the first video I'm seeing of you and it's definitely a topic I thought a lot about. especially as someone who works with former gambling addicts this issue has to be addressed
That’s really ingesting to learn about Japan’s use of the lucky bags! I know here in Australia, “lucky dips” are a big thing for kids, either at birthday parties, markets, or faires/shows (e.g., the Easter Show in Sydney, the Townsville Show in FNQ).
Your hair looks sooo good!! ✨️ Love the sweater too. Great vid ❤ Your content definitely makes me more mindful of my consumption and recognize + tame the FOMO feels while scrolling and even in person shopping.
Your video style/structure is so well delivered! I've almost bought a lucky scoop but didn't want to get something I didn't like so never went through with it
I got sucked into watching the crystals. I don’t own nor ever think about crystals. At some point, I was like, what the hell am I doing with my time? Then I deleted TikTok and all was better.
Also, the amount of plastic in these videos gives me anxiety. People are going to use some and waste the rest but either way it’s just a ton of small plastic tubes that we don’t need on the planet.
This reminds me of the "pearl girls" that were popular for a while. I used to watch those stupid live streams to see what people got in their random oysters.
I access Tiktok from Germany and once I joined I got suggested so many lives where people "unpack" little bags of pearls or stationery. if you got certain "charms" or colored chips you get more little bags. Also there are perfume drops where the host drops tiny perfume bottles on one of those push-forward gambling machines. I never made the connection to actual gambling before, but its exactly that! (I blocked lives a while ago, because I hated how I would get stuck watching people unpack stationery supplies 😅)
Wow!! I don’t use tiktok but I’ve seen some review videos on youtube of people who have ordered a crystal lucky scoop. I had no idea they did make up and stationery ones! It becomes such a never ending rabbit hole of getting a dopamine hit and losing it instantly. Thank you for covering this!
Ive watcned quite a number of your videos this past week cause they kept getting reccommend to me so I finally officially subscribed. Great videos. Love the educational approach you take along with the commentary
I’ve barely started the video but I have to say that like 3 years ago I used to watch those lucky scoop livestreams every morning while I got ready for work because they were calming like asmr to me lol
I used to do the beauty lucky boxes on beautybay because, as a makeup artist, I’d often be able to get a tonne of colour and/or complexion products for cheap from brands that I’d used before; it allowed me to have multiple kits with different z palettes that I could grab and go whenever I had a specific job. The major difference between lucky boxes in the UK/Europe and the US is that the lucky boxes here have to list the contents, whereas it seems in the US it could be anything.
Growing up in Australia we would often have "lucky dips" for kids. Which were just pre-wrapped items that you would pick one out of. Usually these were at small markets or fetes where the money went towards a fundraiser or some kind. Adults participating in something like this is crazy to me. edit to say we have a strong history of casual gambling in my country so I'm not surprised we were introduced to gambling young.
Ive seen quite a few of the ball scoop videos... never thought about ordering anything but I have used them for asmr purposes and have found them pretty relaxing for foing to sleep. I jave moved on since but I was pretty addicted to them ffor a while.
My mom is obsessed with those lucky scoops, she sleeps watching the streams and has spent an unfathomable amount of money primarily on crystals & beads. She has 1-3 packages show up at her door every day, it's insane. She's in so much debt.
Lucky scoops kind of remind me of a subscription box. In the sense of overconsumption. I would also be concerned about getting old product that a company had difficulty moving. I'd much rather spend my money choosing exactly what I want. But there's so much thrill and suspense - wondering what you'll get. Lucky scoops are definitely more like gambling than a subscription box.
part of the appeal is getting products for less than their value, but i think people underestimate how much profit is built in to that "value" and forget that generally a company won't sell at a loss. in some places, it's illegal to sell at a loss. so in general a brand is still making profit from lucky bags. and personally that makes them less appealing. plus, unless i want every item i get, it is often a better value to just outright buy specifically what i want.
I feel like another part of this that needs to be mentioned (beyond the extremely low costs being a sign of exploitation, the wastefulness, the clutter, and everything else), specifically about the makeup scoops, is that these things all have an expiration date. You may be able to get 50 lip glosses at once and be set for years, but even if you love all of them and have all the intentions of going through all of them, in roughly a year's time, they will all be expired. Even unopened, I'm pretty sure they don't last much longer than 2-3 years. Adding that to the fact that there is often no real way of knowing how long the things at the bottom of the bin have been there (I don't recall ever having had a gloss that had a bespoke expiration date beyond the little "this is how long it'll last after opening!" icon printed on it...), it really raises the stakes on this kind of gambling for me. I've bought one "bulk" blind bag type of thing before- about 4-5 years ago, when I was first getting more into fiber arts (then it was primarily cross stitching, which I still do), I bought a random selection of ~150 skeins of cotton embroidery floss at a huge discount (later I found that the numbers on them matched the DMC color chart perfectly and they felt excellent, so it was probably factory samples/rejects/leftovers or something like that), and it was great to quickly build up my selection of colors and give me flexibility in my projects. But other than something like crafting supplies and like, stationery, I can't really think of another type of item that's both something you won't be kicking around your home until you finally throw it out, and something that can be used up before it would become unsafe to do so. (Editing to add, I should say that this doesn't mean I'd endorse such purchases if you're only thinking about picking up a new hobby. I had been stitching on and off since I was a kid, and by the time I decided to bite the bullet and just buy bulk floss, I had been feeling very limited by my local stores' selection, which all seemed to only carry a few colors and all from one brand that I didn't like using. I still use the same flosses regularly, and have used up a not insignificant chunk of them on various projects.)
I Learned long ago my lesson in “quality over quantity” with stationary: cheap washi tape is fun until it falls apart after 1-2 years from the purchase. Also, the chances of defected prints and cuts are higher. So, who would think that buying a bunch of 70 cents lipgloss is a deal? Who knows what shitty ingredients the manufacturer has put in it? A huge pass for me
I appreciate videos like this because, had I seen this somewhere else first, I might have thought "how exciting! Now i don't need to think about what I want to try" 🙃
15:18 watching her dump all these plastic bottles undoubtedly produced in factories staffed by extremely underpaid laborers is NAUSEATING. it’s just such a huge middle finger to the environment and to the “global south” (I know this is an imperfect term but I’m honestly so sickened that I can’t think of something more eloquent, sorry)
Quick input on those self defense scoops too, a lot of the materials there are illegal in many areas! The kitty knuckles are an iffy one, and pepper spray can be iffy as well (not to mention, those cans usually come completely empty so the recipient would have to fill it themself). More reasons these companies are not truly helpful in any way!
I find this interesting because gambling is banned in my state, but there is still a lot of raffels and other stuff that you mentioned. I also hate the online gambling ads, i dont interact with them and yet i still get a good amount of those ads
I saw a lucky ball account with kids toys and stuffed animals. It was at least $100 worth of cheap toys and the target audience was clearly young teens and kids.
As a person who doesn’t play games at all (even as a kid) and am, I guess, “particular” about things (?), I just can’t even fathom paying for a scoop of any random items to see what I got. Even marginally “mystery” advent items, like yarn or cosmetics, make me tense. I’m clearly not the target audience, but I’m amazed to learn this is even a thing.
I really don't understand why are they doing this. As first I thought it was for some kind of contest/lottery or something, but they are simply filming it...This is crazy and stupid.
Thank you Shawna for making these overconsumption videos and this game of chance on cheap items. I have never seen anything like this before and I am shocked actually, this feels like unethical sales and this truly needs to be addressed, it is a form of gambling it feels like all chance, but to rip off others I could never, I'm shocked people who have fallen victim to this actually, it's got a scam vibe, and no one needs microplastic lip glosses in Mass amounts just we don't know what's in the products even they're cheap products and cheapest not okay considering we don't even know what's in those products they could be completely harmful. And God only knows how old these items are expired and they get big deals on them and then sell it to others I don't like this this is wrong and so many levels. Great work Shawna your helping others by keeping people accountable, thank you for being you and showing what's going on. I remember when people used to do oyster shucking but I've never seen lip gloss and makeup and stuff let alone self-defense things that are actually illegal to even ship in the mail to a certain countries, let alone own. Wow just wow what has happened over the years seriously is beyond me. I only own one lip gloss and I'm perfectly happy with that when that one's done I'll get another one from the Dollar Tree but at least I'll know if it's vegan or not I believe I can't purchase things tested on animals I just can't do it and we don't know about any of these items. That's feels more than gambling actually it's criminal almost feeling. ✌️ 💛 🇨🇦 🤌
It's crazy how musicly turned into tiktok and stayed almost exactly the same with dances and lip syncing but introduced scammy influencers and gambling
what kills me is most days, mystery boxes are way too expensive for what you actually get. "Valued at 70 bucks!" and you receive one thing that makes up the entirety of that. IK its how they make money but its so shady.
I have never heard of lucky scoops here in Germany. The "self defense" was uhmm....maddening. I checked Jeff's store ;) and send links to the items to my boyfriend who has more than 40+ years of experience in martial arts and teaches self defense. I immediately got a call starting with "You are not thinking about buying this s....???!!!" He was really upset and said that this is grossly negligent to women. People buy this stuff and think that they are safe for 10 bucks. This stuff is a joke. (Except for the seat belt cutters/window breakers, as long as they are good quality.) Seriously girls, don't waste your money on this crap.
I remember back in 2000-2010s Japanese fukubukuro for Japanese fashion like gyaru and lolita were a really big thing, you could get really great pieces for good value, for example a lot of them had coats that cost almost as much or more than the entire bag. But like you mentioned, at one point everyone was doing it and it was just unsold items nobody really wanted. I've bought some mystery boxes from Colourpop and it's usually because I do want to get a wider range of stuff to try out and I'm open to giving a go even to the things that might not be my style. But these purchases are RARE for me, so I don't get overwhelmed with stuff. Lucky scoops definitely seem way more wild than the two things I mentioned.
It IS like gambling. And its everywhere. All the blind boxes, mini brands, lucky scoops… and adults with their need for multiple advent calendars….. If you are spending money on mystery items, then you are likely paying for junk and the price is tied to the ‘experience.’
a slightly more extreme version of lucky scoops would fit into an episode of black mirror, paying to broadcast your own consumption as entertainment for others is crazy
My 9-year-old figured out that a gatcha mini game in roblox was actually gambling. Since he's 9, he started yelling, "I love gambling." All I could do was say, "yea, you're technically right. Please don't yell that."
i just started watching this video, but I remember back in the day dollar tree had "mystery" bags which were $1 and had 3-7 items in them. I really enjoyed the surprise and thought it was a good deal as a kid. Idk if anyone else remembers these or if they were only in my area.
I had no idea lucky packets weren't a universal thing! Growing up (in South Africa) they were so prevalent for children. I think they still are, or at least I see them a lot in the shops. They are usually themed after different IPs (like disney princesses or whatever kids are into) but I remember general ones as well. They're not associated with a particular time of year and I had no idea they originated in Japan - I think they're pretty completely severed from that cultural context, at least here.
Watched a scoop on tiktok last night that had me so confused. It was scoops of beads and lucky balls. Watched an order that cost $50 for cheap beads and a teddy bear hair clip.
Can you discuss the gamification around paying streamers? Tiktok and Twitch give users badges the more they spend on streamers. TH-cam has started recognizing milestone superchats as well and it’s insane.😊
hey shawna! i hope this question doesn’t come off as rude, but would you ever consider upgrading your microphone? i love your content, but since the audio quality isn’t the best, i often find your videos hard to watch due to my hearing problems. i know your content is all about overconsumption, but i was wondering if this would count as a justifiable purchase? i’m sorry again for the question! best wishes
@@ma-ju3mg her microphone is actually a very good one, as far as i can see, so she probably won't even need to buy a new one, just change the settings with the current one or maybe download another recording software. anyway, bump
I got one of these bead scooping TikTok lives on my fyp this week, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen anything like it. It was like watching a car crash, I couldn’t look away. I just kept thinking, who would buy beads like this? It can’t be any better of a product/price than just directly ordering them from a website.
Watching lucky scoop / lucky ball content is how I unwind sometimes, for the asmr aspect more than anything. I've definitely found myself tempted but I have a rule for stuff like that & advent calendars that I must genuinely like 75% of what I might get before I buy. Otherwise I try to just find the one thing I actually like & buy that only. I have bought from a keychain lucky bag site where they live stream pulling & opening the bags for your order. Was it more that I would have paid for a keychain from the store? Absolutely. But was it worth the extra cost to have that anticipation of what I might get & then the anticipation of it arriving? Yes. Not over & over, but once, sure. Lastly, I find it interesting with the defense keychains that they always "somehow" manage to build the basic style every time. You can fake pulls with some types of items but if every single "random" pull manages a pepper spray & a stiletto & a lip gloss holder & etc etc. Come on.
There was a gift shop up where my grandparents had a cottage. They had mystery packages specifically made for kids that were labeled like "Boy, 7-10" or "Girl, 13-16" and the price. I always bought one, I rarely liked it, and I never used it for more than a few weeks, hahaha. I always just thought, "why would I spend $10 on something I know I will like when I could spend $7 on something I MIGHT like." I'm still tempted by mystery bags, though in my case it's mystery bags of yarn from various companies.

if one of those lip glosses costs 75 cents, someone in the production chain is a slave. people have forgotten what things are actually worth because slave labour in production chains is so common that we forget what labour is worth. if everyone in the production chain got paid a humane wage, no lip gloss would cost 75 cents that's crazy to me
this is such an important point. also, the idea of putting something that sells for 75c or a couple dollars on my mouth makes me cringe because I wonder how much lead and other horrific "ingredients" would make their way into my body. people need to care more about their bodies and wallets (and the planet and workers), in my opinion
yeah thats what always gets me about this. Makeup doesn't materialize out of nowhere, somebody is being exploited for the sake of gambling + entertainment.
also infortunately even when products cost more, the workers are not still paid any more, the added cost for the consumer instead goes in the pocket of the brand owner as higher profit.
@@foliofolio yeah even "luxury" brands use slave labour. it's just so much more transparent in ultra cheap products

Not knowing what I’m buying but being saddled with finding a place for it in my house is my personal hell.
It’s like walking into my bedroom and finding the kids’ clay creations placed lovingly everywhere.
you mentioned this in your video, but i feel like gambling is becoming so normalized for kids... like gacha games, blind box figurines, collectible trading cards etc. i went to china earlier last year to visit family and there were so many stores just with blind boxes and different kinds of trading cards. even before they can legally gamble they have ways to replicate that kind of behavior... it feels a little icky tbh :
yes! and more electronic gamification on sites like temu too
I mean, it’s always been a little bit of that around. I remember in the late 80s in Europe. They would have the mystery little tiny plastic babies. You didn’t know which one you got until you opened it and there was so many to collect and then trading cards you never know what you’re gonna get
Some time ago I watched a video that said that gambling addiction is really bad in Asia 😮
That has to come from somewhere. Unfortunately, it works. I heard that EA gets several hundred millions each year with Fifa Packs and counterparts in other sports games.

AND THEYRE SOO OVERPRICED!! thats why i always just head straight to artist alleys, cause usually youll find even more kinds of items + you actually know what youre getting + its good stuff and youre directly supporting an artist

the craziest thing about these lipgloss scoops is that the quality of the products is clearly absolute garbage

Their management changed and their design quality went way downhill lol
But yeah in general, I also wear Japanese fashion and I find lucky packs, the non-special set kind, to be a great way to add pieces to my wardrobe that I might not have picked out for myself but I usually end up getting a lot of use out of, and if I don't like them, which is rare, I take them to swap meets or sell them to my community members.
They may even contain 17 removable sleeves too!
@@megp9id the 17 left sleeves, just as notorious as the Mr. Yan body pillow lol
Traditionally, they're a great value - a bundle of items priced at far below what the items individually would cost.
In Japanese fashion communities, which have a thriving secondhand market, lots of people will end up listing their unwanted lucky bag pieces for sale in the early months of the year :)
In conclusion: usually the value of a lucky pack's contents are guaranteed, and the gamble is whether it will suit your personal tastes. Some of my favorite, most-worn items are from lucky bags, and so are several pieces of clothing that I've donated or sold :p
edit: gambling is big in Japan however, such as with "gacha" (basically gumball machines of mystery items, where your chance of winning something good is super small).
Yep, where I love I know some of that stuff is illegal
I came to say the same thing. Most of these “safety” item aren’t legal to take on a plane or even to ship to some places.

i know specifically with the “cat ears” ones as well people have said those cheap ones are flimsy and break so they wouldn’t protect you in an emergency either. and i doubt the quality of the other equally cheap items and their efficiency…
Exactly. Absolutely disgusting.
I hate the mouth sounds that come from pronuncing words with c/k or p in them so “scoop” is a nightmare 😂 I enjoyed the video nonetheless!
maybe the metallic taste could be from subconsciously linking it to spoons or ice cream- err.. ballers?

Me too. How crazy.
Lucky bags actually evolved from lucky red envelopes which was a tradition where people would pay a token fee (typically used to maintain the shrine they were at) to pick an envelope with a saying or proverb, and sort of use that to guide their attitude or inspire their feeling for the upcoming year. It was basically a mindfulness exercise that the shrine guardians offered in exchange for a donation to keep their shrine running 😊
thank you so much for this addition!! I didn't know that and appreciate that added history
Basically a paid tarot reading then lol
Lucky scoops are honestly my kryptonite to watch but after buying one (of hair scrunchies to split between me and my daughter) I was satisfied forever because no one needs that many scrunchies. It was like 20 scrunchies which isn't even crazy for these.
ouuuuu this is interesting, I haven't seen a scrunchie one before but I can see how they'd be appealing. Thanks for sharing, Michelle!
Overconsumption aside, I think the markup on mystery scoop items is accounting for the entertainment factor. Kind of like a claw machine, where many people know that you can just buy the plushie outright for a cheaper price online, but still play it anyway for the gamification
Thirteen years of lip gloss! I can’t even. 😂😂😂
it would probably expire before one could finish it all tbh
I def agree and appreciate your call-out of the gamification/gambling aspect of lucky bags. Tradition aside, it's looking like another avenue for hypercapitalist consumerism.
I feel like advent calendars are also similar to this mystery type thing
this is a great comparison
The crazy thing is I can see getting sucked in because I love watching adventure calendars! I have never bought one though! It’s so weird like I’m never going to buy one because I need to know what I’m getting but it’s like I want to be adventurous so living vicariously through someone else! Having to go fragrance free has actually been amazing for my own over-consumption (no more subscription beauty boxes for example, and not tempted by advent calendars, because I may not be able to use the products)
Totally. And it buys into that holiday/limited edition fomo rush as well.
Talked myself out of an impulse makeup haul yesterday. Pretty proud of myself! You have Definitley taught me how to think through my purchases!
As someone who was raised by a very money sensitive family (to say it as nicely as I can) and who gets to have a good spendable income now as an adult, this is crazy to me. I get the "need a treat" feeling but 42 treats at once ? It would feel overwhelming.
42 treats is a very interesting way to put this, and I appreciate that framing
@@romanesybel8956 Right? A treat for me is a £1 iced coffee, and I’ve been trying to cut down on that because even that adds up over time. Having so many items as a “treat” at once would be so overwhelming and give me terrible buyer’s remorse

I can understand how stationery items are more "consumable" than makeup
I loved getting the Ipsy bags like over 10 years ago now. I was rarely happy with anything I ever got out of them. It lasted about 6 months and I just stopped. It wasn't worth it to me even when their bags were like $10, I cant imagine paying anymore for the junk I used to get out of it.
Also, I didn't know anything about this scoops thing but all that cheap, fragrance filled stuff gives me the straight up ick.

This also makes me think of all the fizz parties on TikTok.
Omg going into debt to buy rocks. I'm so sorry. Sit her down with a therapist and stage an intervention.
Reminds me of fab fit fun.
part of the appeal is getting products for less than their value, but i think people underestimate how much profit is built in to that "value" and forget that generally a company won't sell at a loss. in some places, it's illegal to sell at a loss. so in general a brand is still making profit from lucky bags. and personally that makes them less appealing. plus, unless i want every item i get, it is often a better value to just outright buy specifically what i want.
I wouldn’t take that junk for free. Never heard of this. Unreal.
I have not even watched this yet but I cannot WAIT to hear you talk about this lol
Hope it lives up to your expectations 😅
I won’t lie. I have major stationery lust and those stationery scoops have been really tempting 😂
I still use the same flosses regularly, and have used up a not insignificant chunk of them on various projects.)
missed this video first time but saw your community post and was looking forward to it!
My country is the top country for gambling, which is Australia.
I find this interesting because gambling is banned in my state, but there is still a lot of raffels and other stuff that you mentioned. I also hate the online gambling ads, i dont interact with them and yet i still get a good amount of those ads
Yeah, I just got deinfluenced.
I’m clearly not the target audience, but I’m amazed to learn this is even a thing.
from what I've seen the "mystery" snack box's are cool as you can get a bunch of stuff to try
I really don't understand why are they doing this. As first I thought it was for some kind of contest/lottery or something, but they are simply filming it...This is crazy and stupid.
I don’t understand it either. I’m
Glad I’m not alone! 🥺
Never understood the mystery box thing. If I’m spending my money, I want to PICK my own products.
This, there is such a low chance I’ll get what I like in a “mystery” bag, it’s just not worth it. I may overpay even if I’m sure I will like the item
It's crazy how musicly turned into tiktok and stayed almost exactly the same with dances and lip syncing but introduced scammy influencers and gambling
these things are my weakness im like a little kid shaking the gacha machine while i pour all my change into it
7:02 i’m also wondering how low the quality of those products must be
what kills me is most days, mystery boxes are way too expensive for what you actually get. "Valued at 70 bucks!" and you receive one thing that makes up the entirety of that. IK its how they make money but its so shady.
Reminds me of how street vendors do business. The ones in tourist spots n famous places.
This angers me , not only from the overconsumption+gambling aspect, but this looks like such easy money for the accounts running these 😭
a slightly more extreme version of lucky scoops would fit into an episode of black mirror, paying to broadcast your own consumption as entertainment for others is crazy
I have a chapstick addiction & adhd (no object permanence) & I don’t even have that many chapsticks/lip glosses. I would stroke out getting that many
My 9-year-old figured out that a gatcha mini game in roblox was actually gambling. Since he's 9, he started yelling, "I love gambling."
All I could do was say, "yea, you're technically right. Please don't yell that."
I love your videos! They are so well researched! ♥️
i just started watching this video, but I remember back in the day dollar tree had "mystery" bags which were $1 and had 3-7 items in them.
That window breaker looks like something else. I can’t be the only one thinking that 😂😅
Can you discuss the gamification around paying streamers? Tiktok and Twitch give users badges the more they spend on streamers. TH-cam has started recognizing milestone superchats as well and it’s insane.😊
Ahhh omg I was gonna do a video on this topic!! Don’t even get me started on the safety keychains lol!
hey shawna! i hope this question doesn’t come off as rude, but would you ever consider upgrading your microphone? i love your content, but since the audio quality isn’t the best, i often find your videos hard to watch due to my hearing problems. i know your content is all about overconsumption, but i was wondering if this would count as a justifiable purchase? i’m sorry again for the question!
I have no idea what lucky scoops are but I'm sat for this.
I appreciate you!
