I think some people get hung up on min maxing or trying to have the best possible weapon/armor even if they don't want to admit it or even realize it. Loot management isn't a big deal if you don't get FOMO cuz you DON'T have to pick up or even look at everything. Maybe the amount of loot on screen, regardless of their values, bug people so much that they have to exam each one and/or pick them up. I have to clear notifications off my phone immediately but in these games the loot on the ground doesn't bother me if I can't or don't want to pick it up.
I DO wish games had less variable stats on loot. Most games feel like you finally get a good drop but it's a lower level or the stats are the lowest they can be for that item or it's missing a bonus stat it COULD'VE had etc. For most games if they have rare loot they NEED to have the same stats for every player, AT LEAST the same stats for the level of that item.
The hour long raids y'all mentioned and getting nothing for it is one of the reasons I love what Gearbox did with Borderlands 3 loot. As a looter shooter you expect lots of loot and the increase in legendaries (ie a majority of the FUN weapons lol) is awesome and I hope they continue that for the next game. In all Borderlands, especially 3, you can play for an hour and walk away with a bunch of cool weapons. So many weapons that AT LEAST one will fit your play style and/or be better than what you have, if you're even looking to replace yours. A vast improvement from all the grinding I've done in prior Borderlands and other games only to walk away with nothing after multiple long hours. For Borderlands I feel this is a GOOD thing. In Borderlands 3 it gives people lots of options and lots of guns have unique firing styles to switch it up and kick up the fun. Especially with the increase in legendaries. My favorite gun is the guns with legs, specifically the ones that walk around and make creepy arachnid walking sounds and shout things like "Here comes dat boy!". These guns are pretty weak, even the legendaries, when compared to similar leveled guns. I love them tho cuz they're so cute and funny. I REALLY HOPE THEY'RE IN 4.
In games with lots of loot I always develop a system for how I handle the drops. Just depends on the game. With Diablo 3-4 the drops were usually never in my favor so I'd pick up high value things until I was full. Similarly, in Borderlands I pick up everything until a certain level and then it's only epics and up. With Borderlands 3 you can auto sell which is dope af.
I definitely understand where y'all are coming from with wanting quality over quantity as not receiving good drops is my issue in most games with loot. Borderlands 3 fixes that issue for me by having a lot of good drops and knowing I don't have to wait long to find a better or different gun. They even have the gold chests and diamond keys to make it easier to find more guns, especially if you're looking for a specific gun and want a higher level version. Having played all of the Borderlands games, except Tales, I know which manufacturers I enjoy and which guns fit my preferred play styles which makes it easier for me to decide on which loot drops to pay attention to. I think most people do the same thing like Flow mentioned not bothering with rocket launchers or slow fire rate weapons. Really in any game I know what I want or prefer cuz most weapons play exactly the same. I know I like shotguns and longbows so it helps narrow down my focus on loot in any game with those options.
Also side note, the TK Baha Wave shotgun is killer if you shoot at point blank range. But yes I also hate the wave pattern lol. BUT it's a really cool gun, I like that it's different and can melt up close. RIP TK Baha.
The issue for drops not being tailored for your character/class is super annoying but it's kinda unavoidable in some games. In Borderlands it's less annoying because again you get so much loot it's not really a big deal and the guns are still viable you just won't get one of the bonuses if you're playing a different character/class. With class mods tho yeah it's annoying to get another class BUT you can pocket that mod and use it on another character. In most games I want loot to drop that will be viable for my class/character/play style. You can't always get lucky with that and yeah a sword drops instead of a bow, or a crossbow drops instead of a long bow and you have to decide if you want to switch classes (if able) or play styles. If I'm not locked into my current play style and a weapon drop is significantly better then yeah I might decide to switch but really it just depends. I feel the bigger issue for this issue lol is ARMOR drops. Lots of games you're looking for light or heavy armor cuz it's all you can wear but everything dropping you can't equip at all making it COMPLETELY useless and annoying cuz those games often have low drop rates.
The item score in Borderlands is just so people who don't want to think too hard can go "oh this one has a higher score, that means it's 'better', let me equip it". A common might beat out a legendary if the level is higher because the damage is scaled up and the item score shows that. It's to make it easier for people. Common weapons just don't have anything special about them, that's why they're commons. As they go up in rarity they get more bonus stats/unique shooting styles.
Y'all are totally valid in your opinions but I feel like y'all are mainly upset at looter shooters for being looters lol. Like I totally agree with y'all to a point but I feel most of the argument works better on games with loot/drops and not "looters". Because they are very different. In Borderlands, a looter shooter RPG, they keep improving the loot system and really hit a high point with 3, but I'll admit it isn't perfect. I haven't played it but in Hogwart's Legacy, an RPG with loot, there are a lot of drops that are mostly useless and you're constantly running out of inventory space (the saving grace being you unlock item skins to transmog). While at the opposite end of overabundance you have Baldur's Gate 3, an RPG with loot, you rarely get/find/buy loot that is of any value or use as most of the armor/clothes/weapons you find are absolutely useless but it's still an amazing game. All 3 are very different games but each have their own issues with loot and only one is a looter.
