    It amazes me how people aren't afraid to drive cars, do drugs, drink alcohol, -hunt potential serial killing clowns in the woods-, etc. but when it comes to holding mostly harmless species of insects their main concern is getting bit...your more likely to die in a car crash then you are from a bug bite

      1. people prefer things that they can control, even though they are more likely to die in a car it feels like you have more control, also most humans (mainly the rational ones) developed a fear of insects in the past, why? because in the eyes of ancient humans they were seen as horrible things that can kill you simply by biting you, and they are so small and quick that you can't avoid it.

    • @hashbrownz1999
      @hashbrownz1999 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      It's a psychology thing. I'm fully aware of the fact that most insects will not bite me. However, i can control my car and directly avoid accidents. I cannot however, control another organism and prevent it from biting me if it chooses to do so.

    i have a tarantula that got out of her tank cause my cat laid on the lid and popped the screening out. She was free for about a month and in that time molted and got a little bigger. I'm kinda curious if she killed any of the mice we had. I found her chilling by the water heater probably for heat but also it was a spot a lot of mice passed through. She was also unharmed and i still have her. She is now 11 years old and 100% docile.

    I've had a pet spider before (Phiddipus audax), and I could tell that he, unfortunately, was at the end of his life. Friend of mine found him and wanted to kill him, but I told her to give it to me. Little guy didn't eat anything I fed him until I found a little butterfly for him, and he completely destroyed it. One thing I found very interesting about Phiddipus audax is that they don't build webs to catch their food, they just make little 'hammocks' (strangely, he made his hammock on the ceiling of his enclosure), and apparently my spider was very picky with his food, only eating flying insects.
    The little guy would look up at me almost in anticipation (like saying, "Can you direct me to where the fly went?") when I fed him a fly.
    Unfortunately, I had to let him go because the summer heat was driving all of the flies away and I couldn't feed him anymore.
    I honestly think we had a connection together because when I had to let him go, he clung to the cup (I put him in there for fear of getting bitten) and would not leave.
    The spider inspired me to create a 5 chapter short story and a character solely based on him.

    I just want to add my POV on the whole handling thing. Personally I'm not against handling providing it's done for the right reasons with the right species/individuals. I agree that handling spiders and such just to show off is stupid, and of course handling a species that don't tolerate it well or individuals that are obviously scared or aggressive shouldn't be done either. But handling a specimin that does tolerate it can be really beneficial in terms of education and showing people that they don't have to fear these animals. For example my mums boyfriend has a five year old kid, she was petrified of spiders when she came here and nearly had a meltdown when she found out I have 38 pet spiders. However, one day I decided to take out my mature female rufous net-casting spider while she was with me, she ran away at first but eventually she calmed down and sat with me while I let the spider just walk around on my arms, her older 9 year old sister came in too, he sister was a little scared of spiders but nowhere near as bad. I eventually convinced her sister to just rest her hand down and let the spider walk over it, once she did that she was keen to hold the spider herself (which she did and handled her like a pro). The 5 year old then just placed her hand on my arm like I had her sister do and let the spider walk over her hand, I swear I actually saw the fear completely leave her, she actually giggled and said how 'tickley' her legs were. Within five minutes she too was holding the spider on her own and actually now adores her and wants to be the one to give her the cricket everytime she's ready to be fed. Of course I hammered it into both kids that wild spiders are never to be picked up or touched and my pet spiders aren't allowed to be touched (or even their tanks opened) without my say so. But yeah neither of them are scared anymore and actually love and appreciate these animals. Honestly the best cure for animal related fears is to learn about or if possible just get up close with the creature you fear, chances are they're more scared of you than you are of them-- I can say this is basically always the case where insects and arachnids are concerned.

    Do humans make good owners???
    If i love Parrots, lizards or alligators it doesn't matter the animal, the only thing that matters is, if you really have the time, the passion and the will and you really knows what are you doing of taking care of any pet with everything that he or she will need in his entire life in a long term gratification.... Always ask to your self before getting anything, do i really going to have the passion, the time, the money and the consistency to take care that pet for the rest of his life?!¡ Do i am really going to be a good owner??? Always think long term... Happy pet!! Happy owner........✌

    You've got me convinced. I have 2 beardies now and was potentially looking to get a ball python after Christmas but as great as they are, I read about the issues of tank vs tub, shedding issues, and feeding issues. I just wasn't completely set on getting one because of the potential hassle (being a new snake owner). I'm thinking that an invertebrate might be a better option for me now. Definitely gonna look into what kind would be best fit for me.

    • @DamorahTalset
      @DamorahTalset 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Contrary to popular belief, a mantis does need quite a bit of care (for a bug), at least as a baby. Have you ever tried to feed fruit flies to something? It's not fun.
      On the flip side, they're the only insect (note: insect, not bug) capable of recognizing individual people. Granted, this is just by association with food, so they'll get to know you because "hey, he feeds me, he's cool." and will sometimes willingly come to you.

( I also have an aquarium of 30 something fish I lost count with all the babies and a corn snake which was my first pet and he's now 5ft)

      But the scorpions so easy to care for I agree he doesn't need heat but a little but is good so I literally just put his enclosure on the top of my snakes so he gets some heat

      minatoor I started with praying mantises and haven't really raises other bugs. Mantises are pretty easy and they hardly ever bite. They might scratch you if you scare them enough (it happened to me once, and it wasn't my mantis), but otherwise they won't hurt you. If you suddenly can't care for them, then you can either release them, or if you keep them outside and not in a cage/container they will leave on their own. They eat pests too, so that's good :)

    • @biodiversity-theseries1968

      Still probably won't kill you though

    • @DGamer166
      @DGamer166 7 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Dogs don't exactly have the greatest toleration to venoms. Dogs die from bee stings. My dog got stung by a little bee and the side of his face swelled up. Then the hospitalization thing, I've known people that go to the hospital because they have a headache. Then I've also known people who have been literally dying and just stayed at home, took some medicine and waited for it to go away. Plenty of people go the hospital for many different things. I don't know how familiar you are with the tarantula hobby but if a Poecilotheria bit you you could do one of two things. Chill out at home, deal with the pain, maybe take some Benadryl, or go to the hospital and pay money for them to look at you and give you some pills that probably won't actually even change anything aside from get rid of some of the pain.
      TLDR: Some people are weak, some people aren't. Tarantulas won't kill you unless you're super allergic. Even then, not likely.

    • @quentinsalinas8164
      @quentinsalinas8164 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Quick note: I keep hundreds of individual species of tarantulas, breed and document them.
      Anyways, no it does not depend on if you have an allergy. Lets name some facts.
      1. There are ZERO recorded cases of a death by a tarantula bite
      2. You CAN NOT have an allergy to a tarantula bite, as the venom is peptide based, as opposed to protein based.
      3. I've worked with thousands of tarantulas, I've never been bit, and frankly don't think I will be. Even if I did, it wouldn't be a big deal.

      @TheAdaoo7 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Biodiversity - The series body mass is generally your biggest defence against venom. so good job fat people i guess but dogs are quite weak to venom and often can die from a hornet sting or even africanised honey bees

Like I’m still scared of bugs but watching people playing with and having fun with bugs makes me realize that they really aren’t that bad. Like if you meet one person who is mean then avoid people and have a fear of them you won’t meet any nice people so maybe watching other people having good times with bugs helped me a tiny, tiny tiny bit.

    Me and spiders are good until they either get on me without picking it up, if they are threatening me or whoever (venomous species), or when they start creeping around and retracting themselves back to the ceiling after a little bungee jumping (whenever they're just suspended on a silk line). When that line is crossed, it either gets a reverse facepalm (basically I smack it), or a shoe.

    Great show!
    I think a lot of people's fear or distaste for exotic pets like invertebrates and reptiles comes from a lack of education, and/or 1 bad experience. I've been fascinated with reptiles since I was 9 or 10 (now I'm 36) and the one time I was bitten by a baby carpet python, I was laughing at how adorable the scared little noodle was. It wasn't traumatic, or painful, just a slight surprise.
    I didn't grow up with a cat or a dog, and am more wary of them than any reptile or invertebrate I've encountered. (With the exception of wasps. All wasps must die.) I'm thankful my parents allowed me to form my own opinions about what I am allowed to be interested in, not what they want me to be interested in. Neither one will ever want to be within 10 feet of my 7 foot carpet python, but they understand and respect the fact that I love him even if he can't love me back.
    Keep up the good work!!

    But why do we have bugs as pets? My mom asks me questions all the time. Why could we not have a pet ,and let it live in the wild, where they belong. If you really cared about the animal, why would you keep it in a small cage? In the world is has unlimited supply of space. (No offense)

    I kept a chinese mantis as a pet once, and she was very low maintenance. I just picked her up out of the wild and fed her, watered her, and kept her enclosure humid and clean. After a couple days, she stopped trying to pinch me and she would let me hold her. She later went on the produce a couple of egg sacs, one of which hatched about 200 baby mantids successfully.

    according to pub med, there has actually been one confirmed death of an individual from a tarantula bite in Philadelphia on July 17, 1899. An article from the Indian Journal of Dermatology, Venereology, and Leprology stated that in the original newspaper article of the area that the person was bitten by a small tarantula the size of a pigeon's egg with black hairs. But I would like to state that the original newspaper that published the article could have been using the word "tarantula" as a reference to a larger variety of spider species.

If I went across the room, they would “follow” along the edge of their terrarium as if they were fascinated or something. At the time I thought it was creepy but now I’m thinking maybe something about my scent caught their attention. Maybe I smelled delicious? Do spiders have a sense of taste and smell as we understand?
