Oildale....Okie central. I live on Buck Owens bvd. Across the street from the Crystal Palace, about a mile from Merle Haggard drive. We have avoided the nonsense alot of the country has suffered because alot of the residents here still have the sentiments of this song. I moved here from Seattle about 5 yrs ago.... God was watching out for me.
Merle rejected the sentiments of this song towards the end of his life, saying "I was dumb as a rock back then"...He travelled, moved on & broadened his mind.
I was a kid in 1970, I think I was 15.. I was learning to play guitar... Okie from Muskogee was the first Merle Haggard song I ever heard.. I loved the song, even tho I was from a different world.. It was all rock and roll and the hippie thing, the Vietnam war going on, kids had become very dissident, and unruly.The song stuck a cord with me, that world had gone wrong... And Merle was calling us out, and telling us that something was wrong... And Merle was right.. That was why the song was so popular.. By 1978 country had got my attention, by the 80's I was playing Bass in a country and oldies bands... Along the way I think I learned all of Merle's hits. White line fever, silver wings, Mamma tried.... Okie said it all at the time... I never saw Merle in person. He is certainly in a class by himself... Merle Haggard, we will miss you.. My dad grew up a few miles from Muskogee. I remember when he first heard this song because he remarked that marijuana use was common there in the 1920's and 1930's. He said it was used by the lower-class people and was considered "trashy".
