  • We have over-complicated health and wellness. And we may be emphasizing food and exercise too much when stress, touch and sex are just as important. Dr. Rangan Chatterjee knows that people are needlessly suffering, and change is quite possible. Not only is it possible, but it may be much simpler than most people realize. On this episode of Conversations with Tom, Rangan and Tom Bilyeu discuss how crucially important human touch is, and talk extensively about how harmful stress is. Dr. Chatterjee even claims that stress is a bigger part of digestive disorders than food is. This is not the only controversial claim he makes, but he has both the research and the life experience treating patients to back up what he says. After watching this episode you may very well conclude that it’s the simple things that we need to get right: human touch, intimacy, and relaxation. The complexity and the tech can wait.

    I'm commenting before I even watch this because the stars literally just aligned for me and I wanted to get your attention. I know that you get people constantly thanking you for helping them but I need to express just how much I appreciate the time that you take to help people escape the matrix. What you do is unbelievable.
    I've been ill with pneumonia since Saturday and watching your content non stop has given me a new sense of purpose and helped me get through.
    I've been stuck in a world of people with fixed mindsets, I literally don't know anyone with a growth mindset! How insane is that.
    I've listened to you almost everyday, dreaming of maintaining a growth mindset yet I've been drowned by negativity. What woke me up is when I watched an episode where you said that the 5 people that you're closest to don't necessarily have to be physical, but can be via books and online content. I realised that although I don't know you I can shut out the numbed mindsets surrounding me and really drill down on my dreams, ensuring that I use their negativity and social conformity as a chip on my shoulder.
    Thank you from the absolute bottom of my heart Tom and Lisa!!! ❤

      I hope you've achieved escaping the fixed mindsets you were surrounded by at the release of this video. I hope you've reached for your dreams and are happily there now, 2 years later when I watched this video ❤️

    Perhaps, it's all about accepting who we are and allowing changes to happen. I think we hang onto too many "old stories" out of fear that we are change. In fact there's very little if anything about us that doesn't change.. Not allowing change to happen, or the fear of changing is really about the narrative that we are taught, trained that anyone who is different is not good.
    Very interesting talk. Someday more of us will be open to have these conversations.

    Going through adversity gives you empathy, You have an immensely larger understanding of people and how to support them. Making mistakes are so important, growth and empathy come from mistakes.
    Fear is quite controlling. Fear of mistakes, fear of your feelings, fear of boundaries you make, fear of money, fear you are not enough. Realizing that fear is something you create and is unnecessary. Be aware of your own thoughts, are they based in fear? Each day catch your thoughts, self talk is so important. Look at what you are thinking and responding. Are my thoughts based in fear?
    I had a very fear based upbringing, I had many lessons to learn big and small. I became quite ill from all my fear. Migraines, pain throughout my body, weakness, insomnia. Finally losing your fears are so important, each person is on their own path. No judgement, no fear for yourself and others.
    Once I learned and understand these concepts I am symptom free, living a very happy healthy life. Not to say adversity no longer occurs in my life, but the way I deal and understand is completely different. I take responsibility for my portion, no blaming, no judgement and no fear. If you can do this adversity does not last long.
    Keep growing and learning and moving forward :)

    Thanks for this channel, especially this episode in particular. I’ve been slowly breaking away from some of the traditions my culture and family force on me and it’s been a breath of fresh air to know others have been able to breakaway from certain holds in life and chasing what truly is fulfilling for self and not others. #Awareness

    I strongly believe life is about creating yourself, not finding yourself. All that physical and mental malleability is perfect for reshaping our lives and ourselves and with our continued growth and expanding knowledge we should be giving the next generation a great starting point than the last.

    I think there is a synergy in ones evolution/growth when it some to stopping down and building up (yes, you did say someone would point out where you two “missed something fundamental”). Commonly when people stop away something that is holding them back they build up with something to make them stronger ie “I’ve been hell back because of X trauma (stripping) but I know that it’s not my fault and I have the strength within myself to advance in spite of it (building)”. Yes, it’s a VERY basic example but it’s definitely an example that fits. When you stop away anything negative there is a rawness to it that allows you to find something to help build you back up.

    great conversation, I've asked this question myself, is there really other way to heal than to self-reflect and learn through challenge...and then sometimes there are tools that I suppose can help. I almost think it's a combination of the two. And yes, awareness is def key. So if the tools create awareness...then, breakthrough, if tragedy or suffering creates awareness...then, breakthrough.

    Tom B, around 8:22 you say you would like to know how to get through that “film” over mindsets. I work with “at risk” or “underrepresented youth”. I am an educator who introduced some classes last semester to CHARLIE ROCKET JABELY. I witnessed him get through and help change the way the students thought. We were so fortunate to have come speak. He would be an awesome guest. He is the guy who inspired that all time inspirational NIKE commercial that some an Emmy (he is in the commercial too). Please check him out Tom...then it’s your call. Thank you for all you and Lisa do. I have benefitted from your work.

    Very interesting conversation, thank you. As you said, going by your discussion you are both on the same page just approaching it from different points. After reading "The Wisdom of your Cells" by Dr. Bruce Liptom, apart from the energy part he writes that our perception control our life, and I believe that our thoughts have alot to do with who we are and who we want to be. It's not easy to undo conditioning of a lifetime but it is doable, one step at a time. Let's stop being victims of our genes and histories, and realise that we are the CEO of our life. One positive thought at a time.

    My question to you then Tom in what way does one fully acknowledge that they are becoming a different person(growing) and how do they persist through their journey always accepting their new frame of being without falling back into negative feedback loops and learned behaviour caused by their own wiring but also their environment.
    Another way you could put it is how do you adapt to your adaptation? and on an even deeper level what does that mean for ones personal life when encountering relationships with friends, family and co workers knowing that certain beliefs and values are changing . What does that functionally and experientially look ,feel and sound like ?

    Love following these two guys having a transparent conversation. 💝It could get really interesting if they get in tune/aware of our Maker. We are all Children of God. We think we are Human beings having a Spiritual experience , but in fact we are Spiritual beings having a human experience. I FORGET WHO ORIGINALLY SAID THAT?! Having a Completely human mindset can separate us from God, our true Father, rather than having an awareness of His reality. The way to God is Truth, "search for Him with all of your heart and you will find him. " taken from JeremIah. The road from the head to the heart can take decades...... Let’s talk about Jesus Christ who gave us wonderful things to think about. I am in no way speaking about religion I am taking about truth and the way to have a relationship with our creator. There will always be dis ease as long as we are here on earth, however Jesus promises to give us the Peace that surpasses all understanding. Which I have found to be true. Even though I suffee from depression He givrs me Peace. I am no one special just someone that has found identity in Christ. I identify with His teaching of Mercy, Grace, Truth, and Love. i truly Hope you both find Him in your hearts. Love and Peace to both of you from someone who is ols enough to be your mothers.😂🙏🏼

  • @RoryCMahan
    @RoryCMahan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Tom, you're just arguing semantics. When Rangan says discovering who you are, he's talking about discovering who you would choose to change yourself into.
    You tell Rangan you disagree because you can look at who you are, decide what parts you respect and what parts you don't, but discovering what you respect about yourself and what you don't *is* discovering who you are, so you actually agree with him.
    It's impossible to claim you can choose what will serve you best, as you claim we do, without acknowledging a preexisting self that isn't built up, but stripped away to. You can't choose values because making the choice requires preexisting values in the first place. You can be mistaken about values, but only your true preexisting values can reveal that.
    The only alternative would be that you are nothing more than an output of your input. In which case, your earlier question of how to change people is easy. Just change the environment because people are merely reflections of that . . . But we know you dont believe that to be the case.
    Made it jarring to watch, but thanks for the great content and the open mind.

    Man, Tom - I really think you need to really consider your relationship to the spiritual (i.e. the existence of something not within your logical, thinking, science-y side) and not relevant to religion, as I feel it is the last thing eating at you and keeping you from being even more open to the ideas your guest bring to you. Your avoidance to "woo-woo" practices is only the resistance you always bring up around anything spiritual in nature that you cannot control and/or see. *slowly creeping back to my corner of the internet now...*

    The best way to grow and to reach your next level as a person is to FACE your fears. If you are feeling uncomfortable, afraid & out of place. Realize that YOU are in a position to GROW. Your body & your old ways are fighting back trying to keep you in the same place. That which you seek (happiness, change, fulfilment) will be on the other side of your fears. I really really love Tom's style, his instagram posts and speeches are so hard-core that frequently they strongly resonate with me. And for this conversation with Tom series, I have only watched a few, but I have to say that I don't like this particular episode at least as much as other formats at this point. I think the series would benefit a great deal if Tom would refrain from challenging the guest way too much to the point that at times it felt as though it were a contest, and in this case I can see some level of embarrassment especially from the guest's side, and that is also not helping the conversation go deeper. Also, it sounds a bit weird that Tom would interrupt or derail quite often but I don't see how that enriches the conversation either. Often the result was that the talk ended up sounding more like a chat that goes from one topic to the next, some topics overly dissected. In this setting, I'd think it would also help if Tom could show a little bit more attentiveness when the guest talks, instead of acting like overly relaxing, which could possibly come across in front of the camera as dismissive. I can kind of sense what Tom really wanted the series to look like, a kind of exchange of ideas that collide or conflict with each other that results in a tension that finally leads to deep and meaningful reflection from all sides. But now, it seems it's not there YET. With that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing how the series evolve in the future.

      But ... that is the whole point of THIS format - that instead of politely interviewing the guest (only agreeing with and/or privileging their opinion - like most "talk shows" we see) that it is more like a real conversation with a friend or valued colleague. If we're not allowed to ask "real" and probing questions, to disagree, to ask for clarification, to call BS, and so on - then we lower the chances of reaching a deeper understanding and more honest (and therefore trustworthy) levels in our relationships. They disagree as they move toward seeing each other's position. They both stand in their own truth, even as they show respect for the other person.
      It could change the country if people could learn to dialog this way.

    • @heladds
      @heladds 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ive seen many many of his interviews and he's not been to this extreme. I totally agree about open dialogue and discussion but there is tact to it. I admire that he was strong enough to say he didn't know who Gabor Mate is and I pray that he invites him on (I digressed) but I feel there's an art and tact to open forum and discussion where parties can express their opinions and agree to disagree. And here he's asking someone Abt his personal journey ... It sort of doesn't make sense to negate someone's experience and how they grew from it and how it shaped their opinion today.

    • @florydory
      @florydory 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi @@heladds, I really hope that he invites Gabor Mate on as a guest too! And, I agree that he was more aggressive (and perhaps more dismissive) in this conversation than usual. It also seemed like he was ignoring "lessons" from other quests - like Simon Sinek. While it is important not to get too caught up in people-pleasing (to the degree where it might be crippling or could keep you from being honest) coming from a place where you have empathy and deeply care about other people can cause you to search for words or ways to communicate your truth in a way that is more likely to be heard (and therefore have a bigger impact).
      But it is such a narrow line - that I don't know if it's possible for anyone to do it perfectly every time. I was very glad that the conversation seemed to resolve itself by the end :)

    The POINT the Doctor is trying to make, is once you cut away all the noise of the outside world..You will realize who you are and what really matters to you.. Example, I always thought I wanted to be a Rich, guy with all the toys and the amazing beautiful wife and do all the cool things money can buy.. I always thought, the Bullshit stops with me and to fight fire with fire..However, the more I understand me. I realize, I want to give back, I love time alone..I love nature and animals etc.etc. And I don't fight fire with fire unless 100% have to..I leave the fire and let it burn out on it's own...Point is Tom, you can't mold YOURSELF into the person to get what you want..Untill, you know who you are, then you can figure out who you are... I'm not the guy who needs a Ferrari, I am the guy who started a Dog Rescue INSTEAD..That's the real me that took me over 50 years to realize

    Everything you said 💯. 14 years ago my oldest son died, our house foreclosed, 2 failed business, divorce, rape, 2nd marriage to a narcissist all to end me up in jail in London. For a decade I worked on understanding myself under all of the traumas layered on top of the “real me”. Health is 💯 emotional. I lived with chronic inflammation and injury because of my trauma and emotional injuries internally. I’ve been pain free and injury free for three years because of massive amounts of energetic healing and belief re-wiring. Trauma truly can wreck your life if you do not become conscious about your accountability to heal it. I believe the traumatic death of my son started that wrecking journey and it wasn’t until I looked internally my life started to shift. I am now 💯 healed. I became determined to scrub out every single wound and become un-triggerable. Oh my gosh EVERYTHING you say is so spit on. I just started a channel on creating internal freedom to help others overcome their external circumstances. Ooooooooh!!!! Starting line is figuring out who you are and then Becoming a better version of that through change!

      I could see why this interview is a bit of a disappointment. For me around 50 minutes into the interview it seemed that Tom and Rangan where letting the ego get in the way of the conversation. But Tom is amazing at getting his ego out of the way to delve into the heart of whatever matter is at hand. Joe Rogan talks about it sometimes, how to get your ego out of the way. Its difficult to put into words what I am trying to express. I feel that a dual conversation is going on. One that uses words and one that does not. If one is able to pick up on the ques of the nonverbal conversation they can remove the ego and delve into the heart of the matter.

    36:40 I can empathize with Rangan about him being obsessed with Liverpool to fit in. I am Asian descent (born in France up to age 11) then later moved to the US and became obsessed with the NBA and particularly with the Chicago Bulls. Later on, after Jeremy Lin (Linsanity) became a huge thing in 2012, I saw people's inner racism (whether benign or malicious) come out just like Rangan's experience with the Liverpool fans saying racist things to him. It's 2021, I still watch and enjoy some NBA but couldn't care less about who won.

    Dr. Gabor Mate 👌🏻learned so much from his teachings. I was blessed to endure an awakening that turned my life around after realizing my father is a psychopath (a public figure as well) and he had brainwashed me to believe that I’ve had a wonderful childhood due to his love and care. When in fact it’s the complete opposite. Cognitive dissonance, gas lighting, self doubt, in fact my entire life a was a lie. I’ve gone 10 years no contact to unlearn and heal. YES the body keeps the score and especially the nervous system. I’m blessed to have had this humbling experience which didn’t look like it at the time and is working on a documentary (I am a film editor and producer) to bring awareness to such overlooked maternal abuse. There is something about this strategy that seems counter productive. My personal experience is suffering abates when I am in service to others.

    I really don’t think Rangan’s whole description and story about soccer and his favorite team and him having kids now and losing interest for soccer and how that is connected to ‘who you are’ is rational or logical or even valid. The concept of finding who you really are (yogis and eastern philosophers always talk about it) is not as simple as you got married and had kids and your priorities shifted and you realized you don’t care for soccer anymore. That is not realizing ‘who you really are’ lol.
    Why did you marry? Why did you have kids? Are these also because you are influenced by society/parents etc or you truly wanted to do them? If they are influenced by external factors (most of the time it is) then those things are not truly what you are either.
    Who you truly are is a much more intricate concept than just your priorities shifting as years go by.

    This is such a beautiful conversation. I am able to understand the disagreement between both of them. Coming from India, the idea of spirituality is going within, finding out who you are. Because, that becomes the fundamental for who you want to become. It is like, to become a master of subject, you need to study in-depth and understand what that subject is all about, only then can you take it to another level. In the end, it all means the same. The destination is the same, it is just different ways of calling those paths differently based on cultures. But again, thank you. Very insightful. Keep up the tremendous work.

    I know many of my failed relationships were a result of a loss of, and/or lack of touch/intimacy. Not saying that was the main reason, but it was often a contributing factor. People have GOT to turn off their telivisions. Between the nonstop fear mongering and constant political programming, to the subliminal messaging, predictive programming and outright lies coming from them, the tv has been one of the single biggest contributing factors with regards to how our society has DEvolved over the past century. AND now that everyone carries one in their pocket, it's made the ability to cultivate a successful relationship extremely difficult if not impossible for most. Divorce is at an all-time high & birth-rates are at historic lows. Turn off the TV and limit yourself to an hour or less each day on your smartphone. That's the only way we're going to take back our lives.
