Custom Number Formatting in EXCEL had never ever been taught this effectively; it was never before made this simple even for the least tech-savvy audience. Again a masterpiece video from Leila Gharani to demystify Excel's best kept secrets. Merci beaucoup, Leila! Cheers to Vienna!
That is so nice! Thank YOU for your very kind comment. I'm glad the tutorial is easy to follow. The first time I came across custom formatting I was so confused with all the syntax.
Really useful to learn about the third and fourth part of a custom formatting rule (how zero values and text values are displayed). Many thanks, Leila!
Hi! I don’t use it much because to me it had a kind of mystery associated with it. But now, after the series of videos from you, it’s much easier to understand how to use it properly. Thanks Leila for helping us!!
Thank you very much. This tutorial was very helpful. I am tasked with preparing reports with large numbers and shortcuts and custom formatting is a game changer for me. It helps especially with showing the data in a chart. Customization makes for a much cleaner report.
Your videos are really great. I taught myself Excel, and I make some nice products, but watching your videos I realize I do many things unnecessarily complicated. One thing that works well is when I want a phone number to appear as (555) 555-5555, I select the cells I want the phone number to appear in that format, then go into that custom formatting area in the block right under the word "Type", I put (000) 000-0000. Then when you type in 0000000000 it will automatically format it like you want. If you are entering a bunch of phone numbers, you save time on parenthesis and dashes. You can do it for social security numbers too. Type 000-00-0000. Basically, creating a pattern like that of almost any number format will work like that.
Hi Leila.. thanks for this great video On CNF.. another EXCEL feature that is hidden in plain sight. Your use and creativity extends it even further. Thanks for all the tips and tricks to improve my work. Thumbs up!
Till date I was not aware of the rule of customs format plus; negative; zeros; text .... Thank you so much.... Your explanation is so simple to understand in detail .... Thanks again ... I'll try this
Thank you. I'm glad it makes some sense now. I remember the first time I opened the custom dialogue box and saw all that syntax, I clicked away immediately :)
Super great vid! Love it! Your format is super easily accessible. Some of the few things that I do in the Custom Format in order to change this “presentation layer’ as I call it, are: * use colors like [Red] to change the font color; * use a single dash “ - “ (with the spaces) to indicate a zero (logic: a zero is not the same as an empty cell - especially in formulas).
Your videos are so pleasing to the ear that I swear it feels like you are putting the words directly into my brain. 😂 It’s kinda like when I’m so engaged with a good book, I catch myself picturing scenes rather than reading words. Anyhow... I just wanted to mention that in other applications, it’s called “masking.” Perhaps that will help those who are learning from your videos that are coming with skills developed in other areas. Second, do you have a video on conditional custom formatting? It has been awhile, but there were times when I wanted the number format dynamic based on the values of another cell. I don’t remember what solution I finally went with, or if I even found what I was looking for before. Again. A thanks for your work in spreading knowledge and wisdom!! ❤️
Only major thing I saw missing here is that you can add conditional formatting within the positions. For example, if you wanted that only numbers below -100 were highlighted red, you could write [0] when applying a date format, so that zeros don't automatically show up as 1/0/1900 in Excel. Also would have been good to mention that you could write Excel's color numbers, like [color30] instead of [red], that seems to be more helpful and with more options than words.
Hi Leila, Your videos are very helpful to us. Is this is possible in formatting that whenever we type four digit in excel , I want to prefix three numbers automatically. Ex- I type in a cell 3864 but it should shown as "R153864". Please suggest.
Thank you for highlighting this trick, which is even better in visualization, when you have to change the axis to suppress zero values or doing custom values like 1M instead of 1,000,000.
Another great tutorial, Leila. I love your work because when I have my students what your videos they get it -- they understand. You are a great teacher.
Hi Leila, You have given this very useful information and very good pointers in this video. I had very good learning !!. Many thanks for such a wonderful share !!!👌
Occasionally, I use cell formatting for hiding a long string such as a file location down a long path of sub-folders. the cell will say "File Location" and anyone can read the actual text in the formula bar. the idea is to not take up too much space on the worksheet but still provide the user with needed information.
Until yesterday I was reviewing some of your TH-cam videos for custom formating to learn more and then today you released this video. You have my thanks..... In case I have a clarification request on custom formatting, how I can raise it. Keep your efforts...
