@protege6305 the F14D was a modern tomcat with UFC's, apg 71 which was the stike eagle radar with some changes the GE f110 engines, an IRST and LANTIRN
@@notsureyou yeah, unfortunately, the platform never got the software upgrades to accept even AMRAAM, which has a way better seeker and kinematics than the pheonix. The F14 was already almost out the door and the navy had to pay for LANTIRN somehow.

Retired too early? ABSOLUTELY! Despite being expensive and difficult to maintain, that plane is for those who do not play games and therefore need REAL hardware instead of a mere deterrent.
I think the reason that you lost lock almost immediately after that one launch is that the enemy was low and possibly diving and you were incredibly nose high, so he ended up exceeding the downward gimbal limit of your radar.

It's ironic. The Tomcat upgrade program only had limited funds so they decided to give her the TARPS instead of the AMRAAM. Snort did a pretty good explanation about that in the Tomcat Tales documentary.
I would be awesome to see that theoretical 10v10 air superiority fight over the island. Especially with a point system that values returning to base more than getting kills, something like 5 points per kill but 10 points for making it home.
I've always wondered if the Tomcat could be configured to carry eight AMRAAMs plus two Sidewinders by using the centerline hard points in the tunnel as well as the four primary Phoenix positions. So it would have six AIM-120s in the center and two on the wing pylons with the two AIM-9s on the shoulder rails. Just a theory based on the AMRAAM being smaller than both the Sparrow and the Phoenix.
