    Can now say this absolutely works. Im right on track with the updates shown here (my ten days looks like his, etc). But I did soak the seeds for three days because I forgot about them. That said, the skin fell off in two pieces. Unfortunately, that was because the seed split in two. I matched them back up, put them in the paper towels anyway, and today I have a one inch peach tree after about 15 days from nutcracking. 😄

  • @Free_Falastin2024

    I can confirm that this works for apricots as well. It seems the cold stratification is only necessary if you don't remove the hull and skin of the seed. My apricot seedling germinated within a week and has now been transplanted.

      May be the stratification has allready been done in transit. Also it's a little sketchy that a mediterreinian plant that grows naturally in north africa would need an extended period of stratification at all.

    Hey Steve, I stumble across this video several months ago & had just eaten a peach, so I thought , why not. 1st surprise, I got double pods inside the pit, so two seeds to try. 2nd surprise, during the wet paper towel thing, the seeds separated into four separate rooted seeds. Two still had the wings with good roots & two were single seeds with puny roots, but I planted all of them anyway. Today, I have one with about a 2" stem 3 leaves starting to show, the other three are still green & the 2 singles split & have those wings, all have roots. Just wanted to thank you for doing the video, I'm enjoying this journey. BTW, it took mine over a month to start roots.

      That sounds like a polyembryonic seed which can be a clone of mother type seeds which is great. Mangos have the same thing happen. Some citrus too. It’s great when that happens always keep them cos there will be some like the mother and usually one from fertilization but even then they may all be clones. Just going on research I’m not 100% sure about how this works.

    Great video. I would have planted at 10 days. But the idea of skipping cold stratification is a good way to skip a year. If you sprout them in summer by spring you can graft the seedlings onto a mature tree and probably get fruit from it the following year. If you are hybridizing that is quick results for a fruit tree. Thanks

    • @larryd6143
      @larryd6143 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ThànhTrần-333 You can do it either way depending on what your goal is. It you have a good variety you want to propagate you can take scions from it and graft them onto rootstock, that can be seedlings, mature trees or just a pice of root. If you are developing a new variety, usually by hybridization, then you can use the method I described above. Some trees can take several years to mature but if you graft a seedling on a mature tree you will likely reduce the time to maturity and know if it's a keeper or not.

    Tried it and it pretty much works with any stone fruit seed. Tried it so far both on apricots, peaches/nectarines, plums both greengage, prune plums ie Prunus Domestica and japanese plums ie Prunus Salicina and it all seems to work well! I would say I have near 100% germination rate with this trick! Works well even with old dried out seeds like raw shelled sweet apricot kernels that you can buy for eating in the same way as almonds lol. Weird how we are told to cold stratify and wait months and even years for the pits to sprout by themselves when you seemingly can do just this and save time and possibly guarantee that more seeds end up sprouting.
    Have you tried using this trick on other fruit seeds like apples and pears? I guess these are much harder to do with due to their small size but it wouldn't surprise me if this tricks works on many more Rose family(Rosaceae) plants. I am going to keep trying this trick with more plums and cherry plums which I assume all will work well and then also pear and apple seeds just to see if it works with them too.

But after two years of taking care and doing everything to protect the seedlings, this winter, I lost the only surviving seedling. Besides this, I sowed 7/8 seeds outside and left them to stay in the ground. I am very happy to see the new 5 seedlings popped and growing strong and healthy. I tried for apple and observed that growing and germinating seedlings naturally is better and more reliable. Put it in a cloth and hold it on its edge over a hard surface. Then hit the edge with a hammer or another hard object. Hit it gently until it cracks. It'll make a pop sound. Turn it over and hit the opposite side a couple of times until you hear a similar pop. Gently pry the hull halves apart and you've got the seed.

    I didn’t know you had to crack open the pit to get the almond looking seed inside. I just took the entire pit, put it in a shallow dish of water that covered just the bottom half of the pit and left it on my kitchen counter. In a few days the pit split open on its own and the inner seed started to sprout. I let it sit a few more days in the shallow dish, replenishing the water as needed, then just completely pulled open the pit part and the coating on the seed pretty much peeled right off with it. Looked just like your end result in a lot less time with a lot less work. Just planted. Hope it works🤞

      You could do the way you described. But I like the way in the video for 2 main reasons. I can control the temperature and water levels easier doing this indoors. Also, I can see if the seed splits and then starts the root growth and that can save me a months time versus planting in soil and not being able to see the root growth. Thanks for watching!

    • @TheTexasGardener

      Yes, you may have put in too much water. I also recommend leaving the container slightly open so some air can get in. Try again but less water or make sure the container get me some air. Others have tried adding some cinnamon but I haven’t tried that so try at your own risk. I’ve heard some success from using a peroxide spray but I haven’t tried that either. Dry your current ones out some and see if they recover or try again with new seeds and keep the container open. Thanks and good luck!

      You could put it in the soil however if the seed doesn’t take or isn’t viable then you loose a month or longer before you realize it’s not coming up. With the process in the video you will know in 7-10 days if the seed is starting and then it’s an easy transfer to the soil. I kept it indoors at the start as it was cold outside.
