Goto dictionarydotcom and look up "lawful" and "legal", the 1st definition for both words are essentially the same. For "legal" the first defintion is "permitted by law; lawful". For "lawful" the first definition is "allowed or permitted by law; not contrary to law". How is one definition substantially different from the other?
