Hi John, Thank you for your comment.. I so wish I had bought the tent in 2008 when they were first made!! Its so perfect for one person and I still can't get over how easy it is to manage during set up and taking down. No more Velcros or bent poles.... The campsite location would be my favourite in the Mournes, even beats Doan and Bearnagh!! Tom

That was a truly outstanding tent review and covered every aspect in perfect detail. I can now see why they cost so much money, I only wish I could justify one. If I’m really honest I’m kidding myself I will venture out and Camp in the worst of winter conditions. My hats off to you for doing exactly that. Looking forward to your next adventure.
Hi Jon, thank you for your very kind words.. Just back this morning from another trip which I might get edited before Christmas!! Even if you don't venture out in the worst of conditions a tent like this may encourage you to do so. If you buy one and don't use it they go for serious money second hand on eBay so a good investment. I resisted it for years but glad I eventually took the plunge and bought one. ATB Tom
Awesome video as always pal! Love how much detail you go into! I like that tip with the guy line on the inner, May have to try that, have recently just purchased a Soulo myself! Keep up the great work mate 👍🏻👏🏻

Fantastic review Tom. I appreciate your experience and knowledge. This has helped me in making up my mind to purchase a Soulo. Many thanks. Best regards, Andy
Hi Andy, thank you for your positive comments. The Soulo is a fantastic tent with few others like it. You will not be disappointed and the more you use it and examine it the more you will love it. ATB Tom
Excellent review, 👍I also have a Solou and love it. I've no problem with condensation, find it dead on for Irish summer camping as well as winter as our summer nights can get cool, or cold. One wee vital point you missed is the fact one of the inner doors can be zipped open to reveal mesh on the door, thus making for more ventilation 😊👍Anyone wanting another similar review on this tent (,we all like reviews) is MC Outdoors 👍
Hi Kieran, thank you for your comments. I knew I was bound to miss something.. Yes I linked MCM outdoors if that's who you mean in my description. ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 the mesh door is a great feature. I'd read numerous reviews and some were saying that as a 4 season tent it wouldn't be suitable for UK summer camping. I live in Coleraine an there's not many summer nights in Northern Ireland or Donegal were this tent woudnt be suitable. Love it. Great review, great channel. Thanks 👍👍👍
Hi Frederick, thank you for your positive comments. It takes you to handle them too to appreciate the attention to detail and no evidence anywhere of cost cutting.. ATB Tom
Really enjoying your vlogs Tom. I’m looking for a proper 4 season like the soulo but I am in some indecision as to whether I’d really need the black label and whether I’d be fine settling for the red label version ? That landscape in NI looks amazing btw.
Hi Chris, thank you for your comments. I am sure that you have looked at my video comparing the two and I also have a wind test video of both in action...Its always a hard decision. I sold my Red label yesterday to keep the Black label just mainly for the durability, 10mm poles and piece of mind that I have the strongest when the conditions really get nasty... The RL however can take a battering but if that's the type of camping you do on a regular basis then the BL will last longer... The best of luck with deciding and both are great. ATB Tom
I love my Soulo, but if they make a V2 I would request: - drop the height a little to give it a slightly lower profile. I'm short though! - Use less fabric for the inner to make it tighter. - Add mid panel guys to tighten up the outer even more (If Hilleberg can do this and keep it strong) Cons of my suggestions: - won't shed snow as well - less headroom for those who aren't tiny like me - a tighter inner would be less forgiving and more prone to overstressing the attachment points. - mid panel guys would be a weak point. So... While I would tweak it, I truly believe Hilleberg know exactly what they are doing.
Hi Jen. Its great to think of ways to make a tent better or modify in some way. You have raised some great points but also understand the compromises... I think that they could adjust the pole geometry slightly to take away some strength in the roof and add it to the side. The pole crossing points are all very close together. But as you said I also feel that Hilleberg know exactly what they are doing. Thank you very much for your comments. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 I think if they increased the 'triangle' size at the top it would be prone to puddle forming in prolonged periods of rain and little wind. I've seen some cheap(ish) Vango tents puddle like this in the spring and totally flood the kids inside. The fabric wets out, it stretches and a puddle forms and eventually leaks. On the Soulo I think it could be a snow catch point.
@@jenyates3033 I have the Allak2 and water has collected there (probably I need to tighten it a bit) but I haven’t had leaks and I find it a convenient way of collecting water on a wet night!
Agree with what AMC outdoors said. Really good review. I'm torn between this and Unna. Not so much bothered about the vestibule space but concerned about condensation and weight. Any tips?
Hello good to hear from you regarding selection of a tent... Of you don't expect conditions to be too serious then the Unna offers more space at the same weight. Condensation theoretically will be less due to more tent volume..I borrowed an Unna to review but not had the opportunity to use it extensively. Regarding Condensation Hilleberg believe in 4 season tents priority is to seal out weather but this seals in moisture as a draw back. So you accept and manage this as a pro and con.. Prevention is better than cure so minimise moisture accumulation and maximise ventilation the moment you pitch your tent. I carry a lightweight trekking towel and wipe it off if necessary.. There is no magic answer here just practical advice which I hope helps.. ATVB Tom
great review Tom. difficult question, have seen u in a few snow and windy enough conditions. would you be as confident in the hilleberg as the mountain 25?. TIA. (sam)
Hi Sam. Yes but its a close call... The Hilleberg is much easier to set up in high winds too although the mtn25 depends less on the guy lines due to its pole structure..
Great review! I got a question for you. As a long guy, 190cm I've always wondered about the space in the Soulo. You seem quite long yourself, how long are you? and do you touch the inner tent in a sleeping bag, I mean at the head or feet section? . Also just a note, I think one of the things that make the Hilleberg fabric so durable is that they actually add 3 layers of silicone on each side of the fabric which I think is quite unique among tent makers. Anyway, great review.
Hi Karl-Johan, Thank you for your comments. I am 186cm and the Soulo is perfect with a little bit of room to spare. Don't really touch the inner or have fabric too close to my head. Hilleberg just don't cut any corners in construction and materials and it shows through and through
Hi. I'm 191cm and use a Soulo. It's just long enough...in any case, though, very few one man tents are longer inside and many are shorter - some by 20cm.
Hey Tom, I'll echo many of the comments here and say that this is the most detailed and thorough review of the Soulo on TH-cam, bar none! When I was trying to decide between the Akto and the Soulo, your video really did help me decide on the Soulo. Here in Ontario I pitch a tent on rock 90% of the time so free standing was the clear choice. I haven't taken my Soulo out yet but I have a 3 day winter camping adventure coming in early January, I can't wait! May I ask what wireless mic you are using? Your voice comes through so clearly, and I'm looking for a wireless mic for some upcoming videos. Cheers Tom, well done!
Hi Pete, thank you for your comments which are almost as detailed as my review!! I use a SonyTX650 (YOU KNOW I like SONY!!). Its doesn't have a wireless connection so I have to sync the audio in post using FCPX. Usually the software does it but you still have to find the appropriate audio track to match the video and the video clip needs some voice audio to be able to match the external mic!! If the video camera voice audio is killed by the wind they you have to sync the audio manually. There can also be occasions where you are talking away and realise that you have forgot to activate the external mic too!! I am looking at purchasing a RHODE Wireless Go such as used by this guys channel th-cam.com/channels/Vu0oJz1HB8iOPORhnxNtGQ.html Outdoors Inspiration. In some of his work I thought the voice was slightly out of sync but for TH-cam that may not really matter.. Hope this makes sense Tom
Hi Tom. I really enjoy your videos. I'm a novice camper but want to explore further and I'm thinking of buying a Hilleberg. Trivial problem, I know, but I'm unsure what colour to go for. I've noticed that you seem to be an advocate of red tents, can I ask if there's any particular reason for this, other than personal preference?
Hi Eddy, you haven't seen my RED Akto yet! Mostly personal preference to be honest. RED stands out against the terrain and some people like this or others prefer a more stealthy look to blend in better with the environment. The sand colour is a good compromise. I do honestly love my Hilleberg tents having used many tents from other premium brands. ATB and is there a particular model that you are thinking of? ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks Tom. Yes, I love the look of the RED! But I also don't really want to draw too much attention to myself, especially with being quite inexperienced with it all. Thinking of getting the Soulo. I'd rather buy a really good tent and not need it, than buy a cheap tent and constantly worry it might fail me one night, when I really need it. Looking forward to your future videos. Cheers, Eddy 👍
This was my first time watching one of your videos. I am fascinated by this tent and I appreciated all of the insights that you provided. I have a question that no one talks about. How tall are you? and how did the tent's length work for you? I am 1.85 and I hate being cramped in a tent. Thank you for a video well done.
Hi thank you for your comments. Fascinated is a great place to be with this tent as its amazing in my opinion.. You are in luck regarding your hight and fitting comfortably inside it... I am 1.86 and for me I feel there is decent volume inside it and no probs at all with length... Tom
Hi Tom. I have copied and pasted a comment from another Soulo video. Just wondered your opinion as it takes an opposite view to yours refarding order of pole insertion. Smileytall 5 years ago (edited) With the short pole pitched first, you have three points of load bearing contact as they each cross - with the short pole over, you only have one (at the rear) so the other two long poles will be much more likely to flex under load, such as snow or high winds - and could either fail, rip out clips, or do both at the same time. Put the smaller pole over and press gently downwards on the lower two and you will see what I mean, there will be nothing to stop them collapsing other than stitching - compared to fitting the shorter pole under and supporting the whole apex, making the whole structure stronger. I'm also sure you aware, but just for other viewers, it's worth clipping each bag (tent, poles, pegs) to the carabiner as you empty them as good practice, or it wont just be your tent going walkies, even with a slight breeze! Great video, thanks for your time to share it with us.
Hi Madcat, thank you for this.. I understand what he is saying BUT Hilleberg recommend short pole over the top and that's more than good enough for me.. I found an unwelcome amount of tension the other way... How would you feel if you had a fabric tear and you knew you had gone against the manufacturer guidelines?? Hilleberg have a pitching instruction video which clearly states over the top... Good topic for discussion though so appreciate you sharing... ATB Tom
Great review Tom, I am thinking of buying the Soulo but I'm also thinking about the Jannu as it has a bit more room for not a lot of weight diverance, do you have any experience with the Jannu and what would be your thoughts. Cheers Jim.
Its a tough one, a situation we have all been in... So many Hilleberg tents to choose from at a similar weight.... No experience with the Jannu but I was close to buying one as well. They get great reviews and have lots more space for a small sacrifice in weight... Tom
Do Hilleberg have a recommended order for inserting the poles? In other words , do they say whether the transverse pole should be under or over the other two. I know you say over. Just wondered what the official guidance is. Great review by the way. Thanks (and subbed!!)
Hi A good friend of mine contacted Petra regarding this and apparently it can be either way. I found it a little easier to clip the poles with the transverse pole over the top. I have heard it mentioned for heavy snow load its better for it to be underneath as the two longitudinal poles are better supported.. Thank you for your comments and subscription. Tom
@@petergilbert72 Yes I do that now after using the tent for a while. When the transverse pole is over the top you have to pull down less ha ha and thank you. ATB Tom
I have 190cm and curently have a BA Copper Spur. It is plenty long for me. How is the effective inner Length of this tent for longer people? I do mot want to be touching with toebox or Head the sidepannels even if on a matresse
It would be a close one for you.. I am 185cm and had no problems but 5 cm could be tight... I have sold this tent now so dont have one that I could double check again. I just remember it was fine for me but not much to spare.. Hope this helps. best wishes Tom
Hey Tom, discovered your channel recently and really enjoy the content. Can you give me a hint how tall you are and how much head-/ and or footspace you have in the Soulo? Because what i really dislike about any tent is when I touch the ends with my feet or my head. Kind regards from Germany :)
Hi Karl-Heinz, thank you for your comments. I am 6.1 or 186cm and have lots of room in the Soulo. I do sleep on my side though which helps. The Soulo is a dome tent but the ends don't slope in too quickly which is good. Some of the other Hilleberg's are longer but the ends slope in very quickly which limits floor space at sleeping mat height. I also come from using two person tents so I have been used to lots of space. There is always sacrifices to be made in some areas for gains in others. 6.3 in my opinion would be about the limit... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 I beg your pardon. i didn’t mean “more space “ .. I meant to write “better shaped space!” Its hard to compare freestanding with “pegged in“ tents , when space is tight they are easier to pitch and move if your initial pitch is not optimal !
Pitching the Nallo in a strong wind, I found the Hoop, type, tent, better, because I was able to do all the setup, hoop inserts and one end, stake setting, Work, while the tent was flat on the ground, and then, setting the last stakes, Then crawl in right away. .. not have to cope with the rainfly and staking down, with the wind, wanting to blow it away from me while I'm working.. The down side of a freestanding tent is the time it takes to pitch.
Hi Kyra, this is a pretty remote location like most of my wild camps so not many people about. Red is great for visibility in the snow too. I do have a notion for the sand though but getting one of these tents is difficult enough never mind choosing a particular colour. ATB and thank you for watching and commenting. Tom
Got the Soulo BL rather than the RL as for 1lb extra weight you get 50% stronger fabric and 20% stronger poles for about the same price, giving not only extra strength but also longevity. 1lb extra weight is not noticable inside a pack which is going to weigh 20lbs+.
Yes when you compare the BL Soulo against the RL Soulo you get a lot more strength and durability.. If you don't use a footprint on the BL you have nearly saved the weight difference.. But as you say a couple of hundred grammes is hardly noticeable.. I eventually struggled with mine because I started to compare it to a Nammatj... Once again you get a lot more tent for very little extra. Comfort and space matter more to me and I don't care about a tent being freestanding or pack size.. Maybe I just fancied a change as there is a lot of choice at that weight.. Great to hear from you and your thoughts 💬.. Best wishes Tom
Hi Max I would be in the same camp as yourself (ha ha) based on the experience I have had with other brands. Its not that they are bad but when it comes to reliability if there is any weakness at all anywhere in the tent high winds will find it... Tom

Enjoying all your reviews mate, the detail you go into is next to none. You should consider reaching out to companies about reviewing there products for future. :)
Hi thank you very much. I will do that but just trying to get my subscriber numbers up a bit more. Thank you for your support. Another gear review imminent.... ATB Tom
Wish my saitaris went up that well
Hi Michael. The Saitaris is some tent though. Great pole structure and aerodynamic which must make it seriously strong...Tom
ventilation is huge and flapping, thanks for such a detailed review.
Hi Victor, you are welcome. All the best, Tom
Looks like it was a lovely night! 🏕 Subscribed, liked and shared 🤞
Hi Amy, thank you for your support. Your profile on Instagram is looking really good so keep the pictures coming. I have been very lucky with the weather when I have camped there, maybe that's why I like it so much...
Tent looks great, nice campsite too. Must give it a try.
Tom
Absolutely brilliant detailed review.
Hi Dominic, Do I recognise you from somewhere? ha ha. Really appreciate your comments thank you. Yeah I put a fair bit of work into it and also commented on a couple of alternatives so a good bit of research was done for this one. ATB and good luck with all your Hilleberg collection its very impressive.... ATB Tom
Thank you for your comments. Great to see you out in your Soulo too and great video yourself in the Brecon Beacons. Tom
Perhaps the most inclusive review I've seen to date. I've used mine over 150 nights so far in some truly hairy conditions. Shows no sign of letting up!
Liked, shared and subscribed.
Hi Scott, thank you for your comments and sharing. Good to see that you have one too and getting proper use as they are fantastic tents. ATB Tom
Thanks for that review Tom, just purchased one and hopefully it will arrive tomorrow for use at the weekend. I found the review and explanation of the fabrics in particular very helpful.
Hey Callum, thank you for your comments and awesome to hear that you are getting a Soulo... I am kind of sorry that I sold mine.. I hope that you have it by now.. All the very best wishes with your new tent.. ,😁😁
ATB Tom
Very interesting video. I always like different points of view. Liked, subscribed and shared 🙂
Thank you Marco for your comments. Tom
Thanks 👍👍👍
Great review Tom and a cracking spot in the Mournes!
Thank you. It would be one of my favourite spots I have to admit. A little different from the wind trying to BLAST you off a summit!! Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 that last one looked like a rough night for you lol so a well deserved calm night
Really excellent review Tom. Enjoyed this video immensely. People will understand now I think why Hilleberg tents carry such a hefty price tag.
Hi Frederick, thank you for your positive comments. It takes you to handle them too to appreciate the attention to detail and no evidence anywhere of cost cutting.. ATB Tom
Excellent review Tom. They really are the best tents on the market.
Hi Dougie, thank you very much. Yeah the Soulo is super strong and a unique design. I have had great use from both of mine... ATB Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Cheers Tom.
Brilliant review. Really enjoyed it. Thanks 😊
Hi Alan, thank you. I have quite a few Hilleberg reviews on my channel.... ATB Tom
Another excellent video. Great job .
Thank you, this one was fantastic fun as it was in a truly beautiful location with amazing conditions.
ATB Tom
I love my Soulo, but if they make a V2 I would request:
- drop the height a little to give it a slightly lower profile. I'm short though!
- Use less fabric for the inner to make it tighter.
- Add mid panel guys to tighten up the outer even more (If Hilleberg can do this and keep it strong)
Cons of my suggestions:
- won't shed snow as well
- less headroom for those who aren't tiny like me
- a tighter inner would be less forgiving and more prone to overstressing the attachment points.
Super review. Well done.
Thank you Derek for your kind comments... All the very best Tom

Hi Sam, thank you for watching and commenting I assume of your experiences with the Black Label... ATB Tom
I camped there many times 35 years ago doing my DOE
You are giving your age away!! Thats amazing I hope you are still getting out camping even if it is based from the bike! Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 YEAH EVER WEEKEND IN THE JUNGLES SURROUND BUY BOMBS FEEL LIKE HOME LOL th-cam.com/video/ZApn6Pcd0EE/w-d-xo.html
Hilleberg just don't cut any corners in construction and materials and it shows through and through
@@TOMHEANEY100 Ok thank you for answering
Tom
Is it better to camp during the week or weekend just with more crowds on weekends,
During the week it is much quieter, but depends on the weather too of course... ATB Tom
Hi Tom. I have copied and pasted a comment from another Soulo video. Just wondered your opinion as it takes an opposite view to yours refarding order of pole insertion.

With the short pole pitched first, you have three points of load bearing contact as they each cross - with the short pole over, you only have one (at the rear) so the other two long poles will be much more likely to flex under load, such as snow or high winds - and could either fail, rip out clips, or do both at the same time.
ATB Tom
Have you considered the black label?
Of course I sold this and bought the black.. Many video s of it too on my channel... ATB and thanks again for the comment... Tom
Tom
From what I remember, the manual says over the other two poles. That’s how I do it, and it works great.
I read somewhere Hilleberg say to pull the pole down towards the clip if you are finding it a bit of a stretch to clip them together.
ATB Tom
Ground sheet 15000mm HH? Is that correct? 14:38
Yes 15000 on red label 20000 on black.. Hope that helps.. Tom
I think the Nallo is easier and faster to pitch in high winds and rain. The Soulo has better space and is more “sexy.”
Soulo has better space?? Yes fancy a Nallo myself as same weight and I thought more space and pretty strong too... Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 I beg your pardon. i didn’t mean “more space “ .. I meant to write “better shaped space!” Its hard to compare freestanding with “pegged in“ tents , when space is tight they are easier to pitch and move if your initial pitch is not optimal !
Pitching the Nallo in a strong wind, I found the Hoop, type, tent, better,
because I was able to do all the setup, hoop inserts and one end, stake setting,
Work, while the tent was flat on the ground, and then, setting the last stakes,
Then crawl in right away. .. not have to cope with the rainfly and staking down, with the wind,
wanting to blow it away from me while I'm working..
The down side of a freestanding tent is the time it takes to pitch.
Why red? Would that not attract unwanted visitors?
Hi Kyra, this is a pretty remote location like most of my wild camps so not many people about. Red is great for visibility in the snow too. I do have a notion for the sand though but getting one of these tents is difficult enough never mind choosing a particular colour. ATB and thank you for watching and commenting. Tom
What brand pants are those you are wearing?
Sorry I thought sure I had replied sooner. They are Haglofs Rugged Mountain Pants. Thank you for your comment. Tom
@@TOMHEANEY100 Thanks
The only tent brand I would trust my life to.... bad weather / mountains / 4 seasons ....
Hi Max I would be in the same camp as yourself (ha ha) based on the experience I have had with other brands. Its not that they are bad but when it comes to reliability if there is any weakness at all anywhere in the tent high winds will find it... Tom
