  • Shou Sugi Ban (Yakisugi*) is the ancient Japanese technique for preserving wood and it is a lot of fun to do! It's like spray painting with fire. This short video will show you essentially how to do it and at the end I'll show you the gate I built and used this method of preserving the wood. I also used a water sealant on the gate. In Japan, they would use an oil in addition to burning the wood.
*Although this is referred to as Shou Sugi Ban in the US and maybe elsewhere, if you use that term in Japan, they may not know what you mean as they call this technique Yakisugi and they use cedar wood.

It's a classic. I've been trying to explain this to my neighbor. Might need to take a few more runs at it.

It's an interesting technique and a heck of a lot of fun to do! I went for a relatively light burn on my gate and did each board individually. Like I said, it's like spray painting with fire

@@MarkandSam-1 The detail that can and usually does come out from the grain tends to be really eye-catching. There are laborers and there are craftsmen. And masters. :)

@@thenextpoetician6328 I'm an amateur😃 You can fine tune it too, with the wire brush.

@@MarkandSam-1 Sanding also. Or just rubbing two boards against each other. Might as well have fun with something made to outlast generations to come.

I've only used the wire brush and it gives a nice satin sheen to the wood. I'm making a note to try sanding and rubbing two pieces of wood together on some scraps tomorrow. Thanks for the suggestion!
