  • Barry Island was once a haven for smugglers and pirates. Today, they have been replaced by restaurateurs, seaside shopkeepers, purveyors of fine ice cream and tens of thousands of visitors. These days, Barry Island's greatest treasure is the gleaming, golden sand of its fine beaches.
If you want to visit Stacey and Gwen’s house, Doris’ house (later Gavin & Stacey’s house) and Bryn’s house then you need to go to the top of 47 Trinity Street Barry. We call it Trinity Hill, not to be confused with Tynny Hill (also in Barry). Barry’s full of hills.
Before the 1880, Barry was an isolated and unremarkable rural district. It was thinly populated (just 80 or so inhabitants called Barry their home in the early 1880s).
It fell into the hands of Lord Windsor (the owner of the St Fagons estate) In the later 1870s his family had already invested heavily in nearby Pernarth. Windsor was desperate to turn that little Settlement into (Cardiff’s marine suburb. Barry- with its fine sandy beach and romantic status as an island - was a dangerous threat to his dreams. He the mothballed the island, and refused to allow any developers onto it.
The shit down of Barry island in the late 1870s and 1880s went entirely unnoticed by historians.
Windsor had an on going hostility to working class visitors.
The first tourists from the valleys arrived by train in the late 1880s. The were not welcomed by Windsor. In the1890s island didn’t have any proper toilet or refreshments facilities like it does today.
You’ll find Gavin and Stacey’s film location like the Dolphins Barry pub. The church scene, Capriccio’s, Gavin and Stacey’s and Gwen house.

I think you captured the Barry Island we all remember on school trips 🎉. Next time if you want to capture the beauty of the island I'd recommend taking the coastal path over to Jackson's Bay beach, a real little gem ❤🏖️

Great post as usual. I have never watched Gavin and Stacey. However, have travelled to Barry Island on bank holidays in the past and it appeared to be an exotic place at the time!

Never lived in Bargoed but use to visit family. Went back a few years ago again and was surprized how quiet it was compared to when I use to visit.
