    The last example could be a random sample, it depends on a more defined problem. By the 2nd or 3rd period of the day has started the students might still not have completed their homework so this time/point in the day doesn't matter.
    On the other hand if the students have completed their 'homework' by the time period 2 or 3 starts, then by definition they haven't completed their work 'at home' - so the sample is simply not correct.
    So to truly check/sample to see who has completed their homework while at home, you have to sample early in the day at the start of period 1
