  • Tim takes you through the maple process, from start to finish. He discusses everything from small scale tapping and boiling in your backyard, all the way up to lines and evaporators. He goes over tapping depths, planning for lines, collection tanks, tree identification, backyard tapping, boiling both inside your home and in the larger evaporators and more!

This is meant to be an instructional "How To" for folks who are just starting out, or for those who want to take the next step into a larger setup.
    A few tips:
Only drill 1 1/2-2" deep using a sharp drill bit
    Use food grade supplies
    Only boil in stainless steel
If boiling inside, make sure an exhaust fan is on!
    Don't over-tap trees
Don't hammer the taps in too far
    AND HAVE FUN!

Thanks Rob! Took a while, still not enough watch time for any income, but we’re getting there. How was your syrup season? We are only about 40% of where we should be.

1K is a milestone man. Im at 490...we did 5 1/2 gallons this year. Tapped a week early and closed a little early too. So an average yield. Next year I'm looking to go from 50 to 65 -70 taps. We've been doing 14-14 1/2 gph on our 20x48 evaporator so no ready for MORE SAP!@@ElmendorfAcres

Hey realistically 14 gallons an hour on your smaller evaporator is doing really good. We average 40 on a bad day. I’m at 37 and I crested 43 a couple times. It really depends on the weather along with the quality of the firewood and how dedicated I can be to boiling versus filtering and bottling.

So far we’ve bottled 33 gallons maybe just a touch more last year we did almost 60. We added 70 taps this year so we were hoping to be in the 75 gallon range. It’s just been a bad year.

@@ElmendorfAcres I’m really happy with 14 gph! You hit the nail on the head Tim, the wood makes a huge impact on the boil.I’ve been using super dry pine and it’s killing it. Also have the evaporator pretty tight with insulation, gasket under the pan and pre heater.
