I'm enjoying your good natured back and forth with Laurel. A little teasing and laughter is so refreshing. And your beekeeping instructions are entertaining, too...Thanks!
Just had a chance to watch the entire video. Thanks for the nice words on the honey I sent you. Most years we get a lot of locust but the frost got them this year.
At 1:16:00 i would pay to see that!!!!! mr dunn is definitely old but those vets mght have some life left in them that could surprise you. I saw his FB page and he's wearing udt shorts in one photo! payper view Kamon!!!!!
The Apimaye hives are working great for me also. Iâm using a 7 frame nuc hive with 2 supers as a 6 chamber queen factory, and a 10 frame hive with deep super housing a colony of Purdue Ankle Biters.. the bees do great on our many 90+ degree days.
I canât believe I missed this live chat! Sorry Kamon! Overwintering is on my mind. Just tallied up honey production between hives and moving frames of honey around to be sure each has similar stores to survive winter. I hope this is a good approach to be sure all my splits survive.
Can you drop a link to your other channel? One of the Amish guys you mentioned in Franklin is just right down the road from my work. I went down there other day for the first time. I needed something and didnât want to wait to shop it in. It was a nice place. His boxes looked good. I will be using him more in the future. Also really liked the observation hive he had in his shop. I want one.
Absconding! Last summer I went to using fully screened inner covers on all my hives . So far I never had an absconding issue. Heat rises and will completely escape along with all the extra CO2 levels.
Love your information I have started bee keeping March this year and caught 3 swarms 1 of my hives is a monster Ferrell swarm only 2 frames when caught but now I've got 3 boxes of broad I thought bee's didn't cross honey barrier but they moved up to 3rd box and hopefully they don't let queen in 4th box she's a laying egg machine I need some help!!
Hi Kamon & Laurel Love your work, thanks for sharing. But MAN, 3 hours is just too long! Always try to watch everything you share, always learn something new but it is so hard to try to find 3 hours to watch these! Wishing you every success ðĪ
Would like to add that experience provides context and the opportunity to observe the bees in action. You cant get that from a book. Experience provides context for youtube and books. Two months of beekeeping has been invaluable for next year.
The Beetle Buster Base Board is a unique design in trapping and killing Small Hive Beetle, now in 5 countries and selling over 5700 baseboards in 4 years and has proven to be the best on the market regardless of cost , from time to time the hole get clogged up for reasons that there may be ants around and the hive goes into a defensive mode or the hive queenless or cold weather, the design of the baseboard for unblocking the holes is an easy fix by simply removing the inspection tray and poking the holes up , no need to remove the baseboard as the bees will then discard the waste down the holes , if anyone has any questions you can contact me and Iâm glad to help.
Sorry I missed the Q&A. Man Iâm beat. Heat & humidity is wearing me out as I fight SHB & feed the ladies. Night night time gets earlier and earlier for me.
I'm a 1st year beekeeper.. In Western North Carolina. I have 2 hives both are doing very well..! Do I need to replace two frames in the middle , with new frames , to give the bees room for the winter .?? Please Help ! Thanks M . L.
The middle frames should be the bees Brood Frames. Honey around the outside, pollen just inside that, and eggs/larva/capped and uncapped brood.. Leave those alone, so the queen can work them.. If you want more frames with comb, put them in earlier in the year.. Bees stop pulling comb when there is not a good flow. They won't pull them late in the year. The Bee population will drop during the winter. The brood needs to stay together to stay warm... They will move up a little during the winter, but, right on top of the brood that is there already.. Heat rises. Inspect the hive for resources (Pollen and Honey).. A full deep needs about a full Super to make it through the winter months... Feed 1:1 or 2:1 sugar water in September with the goldenrod and let them build their stores for the winter if you pull too much honey. West of Bryson City NC, in the Nantahala gorge..
When bee keepers talk about separating the queen from the upper boxes with a mesh , dose thst not stop the other bees from geting to them. And why do you need wax sheets for the frames ,they don't have them in the wild, also what are the chances of you setting up a box and it self colonizing, really enjoyed your chat,
Hi Red Squirrel. The mesh (Queen Excluder) only keeps the queen out of the upper boxes, as she is bigger and cannot fit. Worker bees can pass through freely. It keeps the drones out as well. The reason for wax sheets is to give the bees a "foundation" to build from. Wax foundation with wire is what I use. You could just let them build comb from the wooden frames, it just takes them a little longer and the comb isn't as strong when extracting honey.
@@jeremyhuggins8796 exallent Jeremy, I'm asking because I've taken a real interest in bee keeping but yet to start, it fascinates me, i will look forward to listening to your knowledge in the future.
Kamon, got a swarm and am wanting to OA asap,,, how soon can I do it. Only had them 2 days. Will bed trying to give them pollen patties and 2:1 sugar. I know late summer swarms don't do as well. Thanks so much..
About the absconding.. I had a strong new colony abscond from a plastic tub pronuc probably because of heat, and another because of a small hive beetle infestation. Maybe the guy has beetles?
Ha Kamon sorry I missed the live chat. I have 3 questions if u do not mind. How often do u feed pollen patties I feed mine every other week, do they store this or just eat it they love it, and the 3rd question I am feeding 1-1 to entice the queen to lay lay lay I want very strong hives for the winter will they store this as well and when do you switch to 2-1 syrup thanks and have a great day I live in virginia.
Gday from Brisbane Australia. Have seen the bees close off the holes in the base board. This is a beetle buster base. With the holes closed off there is no way for the bees to chase the beetles down the holes. David. Kurabees
The design of the Beetle Buster Base Board if the hole ever get blocked up is to remove the inspection tray and poke the holes up, very easy fix , hope this helps.
I've never found all the holes to be plugged. Even if half are the results are so much better than any other method I've used (and I've tried several) My opinion is the Beetle Buster baseboard is worth the 2 minutes it takes to unplug the holes. All hives need maintenance, this is just part of beekeeping.

Holy cow, you were on for over 3 hours last night and I missed it. Sorry about your ProVap experience. I have an Easy Vap and recommend it.
I put 4th box on 5 weeks ago and was half full of honey and I didn't put excluder on opening this weekend to see what's going on
Sorry I missed the Q&A. Man Iâm beat. Heat & humidity is wearing me out as I fight SHB & feed the ladies. Night night time gets earlier and earlier for me.
How do you put the honey on a tall shelf? Hehe couldn't resist!
My other 2 hives are moving slowly and I put their boxes on around the same time the Queen's aren't as good I guess
I didn't use honey excluder so they say but my 1st year is a new experience I thought I could get some honey this year I'm in Glendale az

My understanding is they need less space in winter, not more. I recommend you contact a beekeeping organization in your area.

Predators or nuisance animals can cause absconds
Kamon, what is it like being a bee-grade celebrity sex symbol?
