I have been using wild lettuce for years. I have auto immune disease and have a very bad histamine reaction to a lot of foods, grains and seeds. I have never had even a slight bad reaction. Though I do fear, some persons looking to experiment with plants for the reason of getting a high from it, may see the term opium lettuce, as a reason to use this wonderful plant for the wrong reasons. Above all, I went to great lenghts to identify and testing by making a tea, then dipping a cotton ball in it then taping to the inside of my wrist, the waiting 15 minutes to be sure I wouldn't be allergic. I've never looked back. In fact when I had a horrible stomach infection, wild lettuce tea was my pain reliever for the cramping. No I havent done the extraction process, yet, alcohol is an untouchable for me. I have found a method that suits me and I am grateful to my creator for giving us this plant as medicine.
@@dianaflower733 Yes, personal experience and a very good Doctor who did the blood work on me. I have a broken immune system. I worked in a factory with hazardous plastics, and wound up with all kinds of health problems. I also took courses in Functional Medicine. Learning plant medicine backed by my native american grandmother. I did go into anaphlactic shock once with an 100% pure honey suckle extract I accidentally spilled and got it on my wrist. In 3 seconds I wasn't able to breathe. Now I carry an EPI pen. I still forage wild plants and cultivate them, only after years of research of my own health, and feild guides for proper plant ID. My condition is called hyper IGG syndrome.
@@fryday65ok, thank you for the info. I know of a young child who has bad histamine response to fire ant bites. With 19 being a high allergic reaction level from blood tests, they tested at 38 so anaphylactic shock is a concern for them too. So the wild lettuce tea helps your immune response some but not enough to go without epi-pen? I'm also wondering about Prunella vulgaris (aka Heal All or Self Heal) as it is an immune modulator.....🤔.
@@joesmith4494o, dosage is very important. Just because it’s natural doesn’t mean you can’t over dose yourself. Just like everything in life, moderation is key. If you drink too much water you can kill yourself 🤷♀️ It’s important to always do your research before trying anything yourself or buy the medicine from an experienced herbalist 😊
Always check the bottom of the leaf, friends! This step can save LOADS of time when identifying plants for consumption 👍 I nearly harvested what appeared to be a great wild lettuce ..until I flipped the leaf and saw the veins. \|/ nope!
The lactucarium that wild lettuce produces can be found in other breeds of lettuce including romaine lettuce. Personally I grow romaine lettuce and encourage it to bolt. Doing so increases the amount of lactucarium in the plant, which I harvest and turn into a tincture for as a pain remedy. I have never had an issue with it.
@@thegreatest1540 When a plant gets too much sun and heat to early the plant will grow way too fast. You'll end up with a long skinny stalk and almost no leaves. Then it will flower rapidly.
I have eaten wild lettuce even as a child, it was my job to go collect the wild greens for wild green salad for our meals. My parents, made sure at a young age we could identify many different plants
My grandmother lived to be 92, she said you had to have two messes of wild greens each year to clean out your system. One in the spring and one in the fall. We canned field greens. She said they beat a snowball in the winter.
I grew up in the 50s. Long before I knew about its pain releiving qualities, I learned it as one of the healthy wild greens. Picking wild greens like mustard, dandelion leaves, poke and a several of the docks, wild lettuce was always included. The greens were parboiled and drained twice before final cook with bacon grease, salt, pepper, etc.
@@KB-2222 You better believe it. If you're concerned about all the horror stories people have about poke these days, you'll want to pick just the young leaves on plants below 18" tall. I am new here. Am a trained native American healer that just relocated to California from the plains where I spent most of my life. Am starting to learn the local plants. There are many in the bay area I don't know. My teachers at home don't use social media so I am following you and others for my teachers even though I am way older than you. Never stop learning ever!
I have used lactuca serriola and lactuca virosa many times with no ill or adverse effects . I mostly use it in extract form , but also cooked and raw. I use it for mild pain relief, getting a good night's sleep and for lucid dreaming or just help with remembering my dreams after I wake up.
How do you extract it ? I want to try it but doing stuff like this for thee first time is sketchy. What are signs of good wild lettuce and nothing that could hurt me ,?
Wild Lettuce does NOT contain even trace amounts of hyoscine (aka: scopolamine), hyoscyamine, or any related alkaloid that could produce such effects. If it did, our supermarkets and many culinary dishes throughout the world would look very different! Daturas are a specialty of mine, both in the pharmacology of their 2° metabolites, and the mystical aspects of their co-evolution alongside humans and other lifeforms....along with the twisted complexities and peculiarities resulting therefrom! The Lactuca spp. do not carry the madness of hyoscyamine/hyoscine in any way, shape, or hideous form.
When he first started talking about this Datura was my first guess. I was speculating that they ingested Datura and just claimed it'd actually been wild lettuce.
@Anja Zapico it depends on what you want to know. I would suggest looking at images of the foliage and flowers of several species before reading anything else about them...or better yet, encounter the plants in person, as I 1st did as a child with my little brother. We both commented to each other that they looked like "wicked" or "evil" plants for some reason (we were both under 12). It was interesting to read on the 'net, many years later, so many people stating the same thing. Show a baby chicken that has never seen the outside world the cutout of a hawk's silhouette in flight, and they immediately become frightened. They have evolved to have a hard-wired response to the image of that predator from their species' past. Something similar is present in the interactions btw us and Datura spp. (Or, indeed, the Nightshade family, and I'm sure others as well). That is a start. Read the experience reports on Erowid, and also compare the molecule of hyoscine with that of the chem weapon, quinuclidyl benzilate (aka:"the buzz"). Go from there...
Recently started on a wild lettuce tincture (prepared by an herbalist, not myself), and it has made a life changing difference for mere: chronic pain relief. Thank you for this video.

It helps with my pain. I stopped mowing the yards and I have all kinds of life saving weeds popping up. Gras bad Weeds Good.
@@celesteodeh8522So the first is to collect the lettuce your going to cook up and make sure you clean it off. What I did was use a garden hose and spray it off. Spiders other creatures love it. Then I cut it up. I used pruning shears and just chopped it up like a bag of lettuce in the store. Doesn't have to be real small but chopped up the best you can. About one inch pieces. I add a little water to the crock pot and fill it up with the lettuce. I pack it in because once it starts cooking it will shrink up. Then fill with water. I cook it for about an hour or two on high then I start trying to stir it up. Flip it over the best you can. I keep an eye on it and stir it when needed. The water will turn a dark color. Cook it for 8-10 hrs. Then you have to strain it. I press the cooked lettuce getting every ounce of medicine out if it. It's hot so again just do the best you can. Then I strain the water. I use an old shirt for both. So then your going to have about a gallon of juice. Put it back into the CP and cook the water out. This step you must keep an eye on it. Once the water level gets low you will need to make sure you don't burn the medicine. Your going to end up with a black goop. I scrap out the medicine and put it in a mason jar. Has to be done when it's hot. You can use hot water to clean the CP and spoon then drink it once it cools down. It can get messy but I feel it's all worth it. I had to just guess how much to drink at a time. It's nasty. You have to refrigerate it once it's cooled off. It will go bad if you don't. You want to get the lettuce before the flowers on it pop open. Supposedly it's not as strong when the flowers open up. But I've used it with the seeds on it and cook them as well. If you have any questions just ask and I'll help the best I can.
I had a sciatica nerve pain, did my research for pain relief and found opium lettuce, I used it in the evening and the pain was gone in the morning, a couple of times more and the pain went away for good! Great herb, highly recommend it for nerve pains 🤔🤗🥰👍
I don’t doubt ur experience. However, I’ve had extreme sciatica for many years & have tried everything including pain pills which I’m still unfortunately on but weekly seek out things on line in order to find something/ANYTHING to equally help w/ the pain. It’s so bad that when I’m out of my meds I literally fantasize about chopping off my leg, it’s that excruciating. So w/ all that being said, I’d give anything to get off these opioid related meds however my biggest fear is that getting off before having a solid alternative will inevitably lead me right back to them & I can afford to deal with that either mentally or physically as I already know the process of getting off pain meds will be hell from the withdrawals which I’m more than willing to do if there’s truly a legit alternative. So when u stated that it had helped you when originally taking I can understand that. But I’m having a seriously hard time understanding how taking it for a longer duration of time just suddenly made ur sciatica completely go away. Especially knowing when sciatica persists. I just can’t understand how taking this for a short period of time forever made it go away. Don’t get me wrong, I want to believe this was in fact the case so extremely bad as it offers a glimmer of hope. But can you PLEASE explain a little further in detail how it’s even possible that this extract was able to literally cure ur sciatica altogether considering sciatica persists due to internal nerves & inflammation that for me at least starts in my lower back & is a tightening throbbing pain all down my butt, hamstring, calf & ball of my foot. So it’s extremely hard to wrap my mind around how this one extract can correct all that permanently. So if you or anyone else can take a moment to possibly explain your situation in more detail and how it truly went away for food I would be extremely grateful. I cannot keep living the way I’ve been living & im so over taking these opioids however at the same time they’re a godsend to some degree as it’s the ONLY thing that works to relive the pain from my sciatica & also herniated discs on the other side of my back & upper neck area. But nothing is unmanageable like the level of sciatica I live w/ ok a daily basis. It’s truly lead to thoughts on just fully checking out as it’s not easy to deal with getting meds anymore either w/ the shortage of so many & govt crackdown. Which is why I’m constantly searching for a miracle like you describe. My apologies for questioning your sincerity, it’s not that I don’t believe you so much as it is I’ve lost all hope that there truly is something else avail that can provide the same relief or even take it away for good. Thank you so much in advance & just pray u eventually see this message & willing to respond in depth.
@@U2L8 be careful with this and talk to your doctor but have you asked or tried bupenephrin? My mom has been on oxycodone for years due to lupus and she started taking bupenephrine for her pain and it helps her alot (the downside is its highly addicitive)
@@mikec5400 - Yeah Mike, I really appreciate ur input. Trust me, as a business owner & father to 4 younger children I take this stuff so extremely seriously. I’ve been on Oxy for a while and have been wanting to get off for quite some time as well. But like you said, Buprenephrine along w/ some of the others are all highly addictive or have withdrawal effects when getting off. I’ve actually heard the withdrawals from Bupenephrine, suboxone & the others w/in that family have an even more sever withdrawal process that last about a solid month as opposed to a week a/ ur analgesic opioids. Trust me, they’re all hell but at the same time has afforded me the ability too maintain a semi quality of life especially as hectic as it is w/ running a business and kids all active in their own interests. For me personally, I’m not so concerned about the addiction part effecting my life like an addict who has lost everything. It’s actually quite opposite. My biggest thing is simply not wanting to be on these things for the rest of my life and I’m determined to find a successful process that can permanently fix or at least make my multiple back/neck issue’s a manageable. I’d dump every pill I have down the toilet right this moment if there was a potential successful alternative that’s focused on fixing the issue rather than masking it. So it’s not so much the meds themselves I’m worried about as im overly cautious. That said, switch from one to the other just isn’t in the idealistic cards at this point although I def think it’s an amazing option for many, especially if they feel their current meds are starting to control their life. The think I’m most closest to pulling the trigger on is taking a trip down to Panama and meeting w/ a doctor who can inject fetal stem cells into the areas . All the research I’ve done, that seems to be an amazing experience w/ nothing but high praise from ppl who’ve done it. It’s costly tho and again, raising 4 kids in this fuXking current society & financial climate we’re in, makes me almost want to cry sometimes as it’s hard enough w/o the current outlook & my own personal issues. Which as any father will tell you, they accept the fact that their needs kinda get out on the back burner. Altho both my wife and I are making every sacrifice possible just to ensure we’re at least prepared for any upcoming surprises. Anyway, thank you for the recommendation and absolutely love to hear ur mom has found a better alternative that works for her & her pain issues. All the best to the both of you!

I hope it's not trite, I'm sure you've tried everything, but you should find a good chiropractor if you haven't. See them weekly for a couple months and see what happens. The other thing I would think of is diet but there's so many options. Vegan is good for cancer... carnivore is good for autoimmune... I feel it's personal to the individual & the illness, but it can help drastically if you find the right thing. If you wanted to, I would do Paleo or Autoimmune Paleo diet. It brought me tremendous healing. It's wild that medicine hasn't figured out something so simple as sciatica yet.
Please re-read the study you linked. It says: _"The liquid of the lavage was sent for laboratory analysis and the presence of fine particles of wild lettuce was confirmed by the laboratory. No other suspect material was seen in the blood, urine and gastric lavage fluid of the patients."_ So, it really was Lactuca virosa. They also speculate why the hyoscyamine content was so high: _"The toxicity may have occurred because the herb was ingested when it was fresh and before the usual time for harvesting herbs (our patients ate the wild lettuce in May)."_ This is very common for phytotoxins. The same happens example with potato and tomato (but with solanine content). Also it is quite likely that the Lactuca virosa they used and what you use represent different ecotypes. Thus the toxin content may vary and also when the plant expresses the toxins may vary. These are few of the reasons why medicine has moved into using laboratory confirmed pills ( *not* saying that pharmaceutical industry is problem free!).
@@Lugh444 I think he just skimmed the article. It is very usual that people tend to try confirming what they already believe, instead of trying to look for the contradicting information. That, combined to confirmation bias leads us wrong very often.

I harvested Lactuca Canadensis one week ago. Dried it and am making a tincture. My husband and I have smoked some of the dried leaves. I am not a fan of smoking, but a few puffs at bedtime have been very beneficial. The effect is a mild relaxation and a good nights sleep. I was taking Benadryl nightly for sleep. Due to the adverse effects of routine Benadryl, I wanted to stop taking it. I am sleeping all night and waking with no adverse side effects. I will try the tincture in about 30 days. I would strongly discourage anyone from trying an herbal remedy unless they are completely satisfied that they are using the appropriate herb. Your videos have been extremely helpful.
It's probably a mix of placebo and a slight buzz from the smoke (which you will get from smoking virtually any plant). I don't think there is anything in this plant potent enough to have much of an effect from a few puffs of smoke.

I was told that if you put some "latex" or other juices from a plant on a soft area of your skin it can help you see if you have a reaction to it. I was told to clean the area with rubbing alcohol, "slightly" scratch the area with a clean tool (use whatever) and place the latex on the spot. If it swells or becomes red (past the time of the the scratch) than you may not want to ingest it. The scratch is just to exfoliate and bring blood to the skin not to damage the tissues. Hope this is helpful.😊
I use it during the summer for my chronic back pain.. it works almost instantly. Simply pull a leaf, and squeeze out ONE DROP onto your finger, and quickly wash it down as its very bitter tasting. The pain relief doesent last too long, but it does work very well and quickly. I purposely do not weedwhack any useful plants, much to my bosses chagrin.

I have eaten wild lettuce since childhood. Domestic lettuce is the same as wild lettuce, normally latuca scariola. I normally use wild lettuce cooked, since it is usually rather limp, and makes a loudy salad. However, it makes an excellent spanakopita. In greek, however, spanakopita means spinach pie. Wild lettuce is very similar to dandelion, and is referred to as lachanakopita. Equally good.

I’d like to know how they consumed a significant amount of wild lettuce. It’s extremely bitter and definitely does NOT taste like food. It tastes more like chewing aspirin.
They certainly look very similar in the rosette stage! I had read that report too and was a bit disappointed because I am growing virosa in a bed. I purchased my seed from Strickley Medicinal Seeds. Going to do a double tincture this year. Thanks I feel better now. Makes more sense. Henbane.

Elderflower and Elderberries might be useful also. Have fun researching and may you find what helps you 😊
Nice video 👍 I have used wild lettuce but in very small amounts. In learning about wild herbs and foods some give specific cautions concerning ingesting mass quantities. As with all things I keep the principal that too much of anything can be a bad thing. Thanks for the information 😊
I've smoked wild lactuca virosa leaves and stems before and it's definitely mildly psychoactive done like that. Nothing happens at first but a couple minutes after smoking this very mild relaxing kinda high hits you, kinda feels like the effects of a single small hit of weed.
I had jackfruit some time ago. It’s fruit was golden and unfortunately full of latex, which I have an an allergy to. Just saying it’s not always the rubber tree but hopefully not bad in wild lettuce although still a concern.
I'm allergic to latex and it hasn't bothered me, surprisingly. I prepared it bare-handed, I had no reaction. Must be different than rubber gloves/tires etc...
There’s a massive wild lettuce plant I’ve been eyeing up and thinking about using for pain relief the past few months in case we run out of MMJ. I’ll be sure to exercise caution.
Are you going to dry it, then pulverize? I have a 4 foot tall bitter lettuce "weed" I've been eyeing. I finally put a tiny bit in a smoothie. Pineapple removed the bitter taste.
I collected about a half ounce of the milk out of several tall stalks of the wild lettuce, and I drank about a teaspoon of the liquid to try it, and it gave me a noticeable buzz, but nothing like the opium buzz I was hoping for. It was about like a Valium buzz, which I hate. I had to drink a bunch of wine to get rid of that miserable buzz.
I tried it for the first time today, and I have to agree with what you said. Minus the fact, I don’t mind Valium haha. Not really like opium, though that doesn’t surprise me really. Felt my muscles relax, my mind relax, and was a bit sleepy. Definitely interesting!
man its people like you that ruin this for everyone else. You just looking to get high when other people are trying to reduce their pain. Then this stuff gets a bad rap sheet from all you kids doing it to get "turnt up"
it was in 2010 that for the first time in my life I started to be on the web but I notice that banal and obvious comments get approvals and likes while comments with genuine and useful information "seem" to be ignored. This says a lot about the attitude of human beings in our era today.
I’m tired of hearing people say wild lettuce is a good substitute for opium. Real opium… It is not. I’m glad to hear this guy say wild lettuce doesn’t contain any opiates.
how did you eat bowls of it with no side effects? last week, i had 3 lactuca virosa leaves after cutting off the back vein spines and boiling it. Im 100000% confident it was lactuca virosa as i looked to many sources including one of your videos to positively ID it. After eating a few leaves i had dilated eyes, slight disorientation w/ motor functions, and of course later on felt drowsy. Also later on that week i gathered more to prepare for drying with my bare hands, and began sweating in a normal temperature room solely due to skin contact with cutting the leaves from the stem and placing them in a pile to inspect before washing and drying. not trying to knock the plant at all though, i know im often prone to reaching highs much faster than others. And i still look forward to continuously having lactuca virosa tinctures available for insomnia that i suffer from and anyone who needs it for pain relief
I had a bum knee and ate some wild lettuce and it eased the pain enough for me to hike 5 hours back down the mountain, I may have made it home without it, but it turned an excruciating pain into a dull ache and a lazy laughter...
Hyoscyamine is the only thing that helps with my IBS pain if I have a flare up. I’d guess if they were climbing, they probably consumed bird, bat, or rodent feces and got an actual bacterial illness. Not uncommon to hallucinate while sick.

This grows up to 12ft tall in FL (that I've seen may get bigger by the lakes). I occasionally will bleed the sap from the stalks to help with my sciatica. Never found it to be very desirable so I only ever took enough to feel better.
Interesting 2 main compounds Lactucin and another very similar one act on same receptors as caffeine in an opposite way. Learn something every day. Totally safe. Be safe 🙏
I know I'm weird, but I don't find it too bitter, but I like the taste of all greens. I have Lactuca Serriola and Dandelions growing wild in my yard. No it's not as sweet as iceberg lettuce, but it's along the same lines as green Kale to me from a bitterness standpoint. I just love all of them because I know they're so good for me. So I think from a psychological standpoint that causes it to taste even better to me. The fact they're high in iron is a real plus for me too
@@Wilderness_therapy I don't remember the exact way I was responding to this video without rewatching it, but my sense of taste and smell are not as strong as some people. With the leaves tho the sap is really negligible right? I just ate a little the past couple days because I was so bloated, and it was like, boom, puffy ankles and gut gone
I haven't tried eating just the leaves. I put them in my dehydrator and smoke them with mullein and hash. It's amazing for pain or relaxing, but while I was cutting the leaves off I got some sap on my hand and decided to lick it off and i had to drink some really sweet juice to get over the bitterness lmao
Pineapple weed grows abundantly around where I live. There aren't really any other similar looking plants that grow in similar places (packed soil, usually near roads, paths etc...) - and there certainly aren't any others that smell like pineapple. But, people I tell about it often assume since I'm not an "expert", they're better off eating cricket flour.... Although I was actually in Boy Scouts until I was 18, and learned quite a bit about local edible plants, and some medicinal ones...

You are obviously somewhat cleverer than the uneducated nay sayers whom will probably starve to death on their ignorance and small mindedness. All the very best to you 🤙🏼
My literal first thought was contamination or misidentification, I just harvested some wild lettuce and it tended to grow near poison hemlock (like maybe ⅓ of the time) to me that indicates they accidentally ate the wrong leaves
just before you said hyoscyamine in the video Datura immediately popped into my head, or some other Tropane alkaloid containing plant especially for that location

I don't even process the plant into a brown sludge. I used a method a woman from down under showed on her youtube channel. Just making a tincture from it is perfect for me. There are three types of wild lettuce. The one that grows in my area is in the middle of the potency profile. I don't get high from it. No adverse reactions at all. Before that, I found that mugwort offered some relief but not on the scale of wild lettuce.

I haven't tried any of the large older leaves of wild lettuce but the young leaves I have eaten, I didn't think were overly bitter. Also the same domestic lettuce I grow when left to go to seed bleeds the same white latex as the wild lettuce and extremely bitter.

How does wild lettuce function in the brain for pain control? Does it block the pain receptors in your brain like opiates, or is it a different function? I have been in pain management for many years. They have never really gotten my pain controlled to where I can have a somewhat normal life and be able to work 40hrs a week. I want my life back and if this is something that I can use along side my medications, I would love to give it a try. Thank you for your videos on this, it brought me some hope to see that there’s other natural alternatives outside of kratom (so gross tasting) and cannabis (which I can’t use because my husband is a cop). SOME species of wild lettuce also contain small amounts of hyoscyamine, one of the toxic compounds found in nightshades like belladonna, datura, or brugmansia. That stuff is extremely potent and potentially deadly. It's also the most powerful deliriant hallucinogen by weight of the actual alkaloid. It causes pupil dilation at very low doses, even below the actual psychoactive threshold - although it doesn't dilate them as much as scopolamine - and the next symptom you get, usually within ten minutes, is severe dry mouth. The hallucinogenic/delirium dose is also extremely, razor's-edge close to the lethal dose, closer than either atropine or scopolamine. And on top of that, it causes some respiratory depression and isn't at all safe to combine with other depressants. However, the traces of hyoscyamine found in wild lettuce are sometimes a result of it simply growing near a toxic nightshade, and as such it'll be more concentrated near the roots. If you're growing a nightshade (the common decorative ones are belladonna, brugmansia, and datura) in your garden for ornamental reasons, please put it in its own bed separate from your other plants, particularly if you're growing other plants in the Solanaceae family like tomatoes, but most plants will pick stuff up from their environment, potentially including highly toxic alkaloids like this
When you eat a wild edible always eat a small amount first. And see if you have a reaction before eating more. But before that make sure you cross reference and feel positive about the ID
If this stuff is remotely related to Jimpson weed, DO NOT ingest large amounts for the purpose of getting high…. I have done it. In my younger days. Was the absolute worst most psychologically agonizing experience of my life. I didn’t end up in a hospital but I probably should have. If not from the toxins, from the insane (literally) trip I was having. It was terrible. Imagine a waking, real-time, dreamscape where everyone and everything seemed unreal and I had lost everything I ever loved. That was the EASY part of the evening. The whole thing is way too much to type. Suffice it to say, I’m experienced with hallucinogens so I didn’t go into it with bad energy. Nobody did anything to me. The next day when it was finally going away I spent that whole day like an old person with advanced dimentia. My gf at the time had to literally babysit me. Moral of the story, kids…a lot of these wild plants will do exactly what they say. But there’s a definite reason why it’s not in the club with weed, or opium poppies, or coca. Fu#% around.. you WILL find out.. The more ya know 🌈
What you described is exactly what I've read about ppl experiences with datura. I hope your warning hits home to those inclined to FAFO. btw, I grow it in containers on my deck and although the leaves smell terrible, the scent from the gorgeous flowers (that only last a day), is heavenly. If I sniff too many of them it almost seems as if I experience a mild euphoria.
So wait a minute. Can you make rubber from latex from aster family plants? Would that be a suitable alternative source for natural rubber for places that cannot cultivate rubber trees?
The lactucarium that wild lettuce produces can be found in other breeds of lettuce including romaine lettuce. Personally I grow romaine lettuce and encourage it to bolt.
I am very interested in Datura, can you share a little bit of your knowledge or help me with a link..? Thank you!

Can you tell me how to use the crockpot method. This will be my first time extracting the wild lettuce.
@@celesteodeh8522Yes I can. Give me a few minutes.
Omg thank you. I had spinal fusion a few years ago and I'm tired of meds life finding this is such a blessing
So refreshing to see someone who actually knows what they’re talking about. Sub’d!

Please re-read the study you linked. It says: _"The liquid of the lavage was sent for laboratory analysis and the presence of fine particles of wild lettuce was confirmed by the laboratory. No other suspect material was seen in the blood, urine and gastric lavage fluid of the patients."_
So, it really was Lactuca virosa. They also speculate why the hyoscyamine content was so high: _"The toxicity may have occurred because the herb was ingested when it was fresh and before the usual time for harvesting herbs (our patients ate the wild lettuce in May)."_
This is very common for phytotoxins.

Glad it was helpful! Be safe.
I was thinking about this because I'm allergic to latex too. I've been interested in growing wild lettuce t9 help ease fibromyalgia amd arthritis pain and to help me sleep but worried because of the latex. Very helpful, thank you ❤😊
I was told that if you put some "latex" or other juices from a plant on a soft area of your skin it can help you see if you have a reaction to it.
@@jeanettereno4045 thank you.. I will definitely test before using..
Omggg I almost missed this. I’m allergic to latex but I just thought it was those medical gloves. So now I’d better Google latex. Thank you! 😮
Love how well this incident was dissected and analyzed
Thank you so much for sharing your great knowledge of this somewhat obscure herb! Great editing and research!
I'm terminally ill and not ever 90mg total day of oxy plus 4 other Class 2 drugs can touch it so I'm willing to eat arsenic if it could possibly begin to help.
I've tried CBD, Delta 8, Delta 9, and normal pot but the issue is it leave me unable to have normal motor function. I'm not looking for pain free, hell I would take a daily pain of 7 and be ugly crying with happiness because the pain is that bad.
Before the ONLY medication that helped and didn't leave me feeling high was Belladonna with Phenabarb and guess what no specialist I know of has even heard of before.
Sending you love ❤
I have eaten wild lettuce since childhood. Domestic lettuce is the same as wild lettuce, normally latuca scariola. I normally use wild lettuce cooked, since it is usually rather limp, and makes a loudy salad. However, it makes an excellent spanakopita. In greek, however, spanakopita means spinach pie. Wild lettuce is very similar to dandelion, and is referred to as lachanakopita. Equally good.
I used wild lettuce as a staple food...I use cooked wild lettuce many times a month washed, cooked with oil and onion...we also use it as a salad green...never had a problem....it also helps in blood sugar regulation for pre-diabetics....
I've been using wild lettuce in varying forms for an assortment of ailments for well over 45 years and have never had any adverse reactions.
I have made a tincture with wild lettuce on my property if I take it more than twice a day, I have had hallucinations. I will take 2 drops in the morning and 2 drops at night, no more.
I saw a video from a lady in Tenn. She shows the young Wild Lettuce plants , flowers and mature plants. So I bought some seeds from two sources. I am now into my second year with 3 healthy plants. The Lactuca Verosa is a Bi-annual. So I have to wait for this year to finish growing it. Then I can harvest some sap, leaves and more. I hope it relieves my various pains. I do not like meds at all. Or putting smoke into my lungs. Thanks for your expertise and wisdom ! God Bless you !

I have L. Canadiensis(sp?) growing in my yard. I spent a good deal of time trying to figure out the specific type since the flowers looked like purple Broccoli when they were forming. I ended up getting the final ID from a Botanist.
I had the same, even used the phrase "purple Broccoli" lol!
I have fibromyalgia and use this for for the the constant pain at night and not being able to sleep the whole night through. I need to take one every time I wake up at night to keep the pain away and be able to fall asleep again. I don’t look to get gift high. I’m near 70.
Thanks! I let the canadensis grow in the yard near the stinging nettles. I like the young leaves in salad and the budding flowers sautéed.
As someone who used to trip on myristicin (extracted from nutmeg). This sounds EXACTLY like a trip of unprepared nutmeg. They might have just used too much of it on their food which can already trigger it.
too much nutmeg can kill a person
Bullshit nutmeg feels like hash edibles
Very strong ones
Also myristicin is a mdma like stimulant which nutmeg only contains in very small quantities
Henbane.

Used it many times in the distant past. smoking the resin on top of a bowl of weak pot. It made the pot better every time!
Thanks for making this video. I just got some wild lettuce tincture to see if I could add it to my asthma protocol during allergy season which is now, although mullein tincture is doing a great job so far. I MIGHT have some wild lettuce growing out back here but I bookmarked you other video about ID'ing it so when it pops up, I'll know if it is or not. I and can see how people might confuse it with other plants. Compliments on your channel, it's very helpful and well done!
Have a look into Goldenrod for your seasonal allergies and maybe Lobelia inflata for the asthma....April Graham/"She is of the Woods" has some great videos on Goldenrod and Doc Jones I think talks about the Lobelia inflata.

You can also vaporize the concentrated extract with a dab rig, although it tastes pretty bad
Ohhh, sounds good
I might try the lactucarium in the oil capsule for my vape but imagine it might get messy
Have you ever smoked any of that wild lettuce tar you have? If so, does it provide any pain relief?
I did it! I made some lacticarium using your video. I’m trying it right now! 1 tsp in a cup of tea with honey.
What kind of person wants to trip while climbing a rock face? Savage
I saw an add in an old High Times magazine from the late 70’s talking about lettuce “opium” for sale as a legal high
My father said the same thing.
Just lookin for a buzz huh?
I hear there's a great one at the end of a rope.

it was in 2010 that for the first time in my life I started to be on the web but I notice that banal and obvious comments get approvals and likes while comments with genuine and useful information "seem" to be ignored. This says a lot about the attitude of human beings in our era today.
I’m tired of hearing people say wild lettuce is a good substitute for opium. Real opium… It is not. I’m glad to hear this guy say wild lettuce doesn’t contain any opiates.
Awesome video! Great job
Thank you! :D
how did you eat bowls of it with no side effects? last week, i had 3 lactuca virosa leaves after cutting off the back vein spines and boiling it.
Very informative... Looking forward to harvesting some wild lettuce this year to make some resign for later use.
Glad it was helpful!
Hyoscyamine is the only thing that helps with my IBS pain if I have a flare up. I’d guess if they were climbing, they probably consumed bird, bat, or rodent feces and got an actual bacterial illness. Not uncommon to hallucinate while sick.
Nonsense they probably misidentified what they used
No, quote from the study: _"The liquid of the lavage was sent for laboratory analysis and the presence of fine particles of wild lettuce was confirmed by the laboratory. No other suspect material was seen in the blood, urine and gastric lavage fluid of the patients."_
I want to try it even more now. I always see it growing near the ends of fields, but always forget to harvest the sap.
The fact they're high in iron is a real plus for me too
The sap is so bitter. I just ate some like a second ago and it was horrible
@@Wilderness_therapy Does it work for moderate or even severe, more acute back pain as you prepare it?

Pineapple weed grows abundantly around where I live. There aren't really any other similar looking plants that grow in similar places (packed soil, usually near roads, paths etc...) - and there certainly aren't any others that smell like pineapple. But, people I tell about it often assume since I'm not an "expert", they're better off eating cricket flour.... Although I was actually in Boy Scouts until I was 18, and learned quite a bit about local edible plants, and some medicinal ones...
I feel your pain. I wildcraft herbs and mushrooms and people look at me like I'm crazy
Remember if you like doing it and it helps you or you get something out of it that helps you keep doing it no matter what people around you say especially if it's a passion or a hobby of yours Plus the person that forges their own way especially Upstream of others usually has a harder time but is more fulfilled.
You are obviously somewhat cleverer than the uneducated nay sayers whom will probably starve to death on their ignorance and small mindedness. All the very best to you 🤙🏼
Mandrake is actually more similar in appearance to wild lettuce and grows in this area. Henbane is so hairy that you can't confuse them.
This should be taught in pharmacy schools!
Only if it can me mixed with petroleum by the pharmaceuticals like the rest of their poisons and sold for mega $$$$.
I keep hearing about people making wild lettuce extraction but nobody's been able to tell me what's in it and what it does
What time of the year is best to harvest?
How do you eat the leaves when they have such spiny undersides?
My literal first thought was contamination or misidentification, I just harvested some wild lettuce and it tended to grow near poison hemlock (like maybe ⅓ of the time) to me that indicates they accidentally ate the wrong leaves
just before you said hyoscyamine in the video Datura immediately popped into my head, or some other Tropane alkaloid containing plant especially for that location
I used to take Hyoscyamine for my stomach issues, maybe I should just use wild lettuce.
I had a herbal combination for pain, that worked great! It got changed because the removed the wild lettuce. I had found with the lettuce, they made my nose and mouth dry up. Once changed, it no longer did that. But? I am not adverse to using wild lettuce. The one growing in my yard is the Canadian version, from what i can tell.

Greatly appreciated young man. Your depth of understanding gives solid weight to your opinions
I haven't tried any of the large older leaves of wild lettuce but the young leaves I have eaten, I didn't think were overly bitter.
I grow a domesty leaf lettuce that is much more bitter than the wild lettuce I have eaten.
Also the same domestic lettuce I grow when left to go to seed bleeds the same white latex as the wild lettuce and extremely bitter.
I'm suffering from chronic pain still 8 months after several major injuries, is wild lettuce actually helpful? If so how helpful.
It didn't do much for me.
yup, i use it also and i have never had any ill effects.
ya idk man. lots of people use it as a medicine and a painkiller. and yess the latex/sap of it is used a lot and concentrated and most ppl that use it are fine with it and dont trip balls
How does wild lettuce function in the brain for pain control? Does it block the pain receptors in your brain like opiates, or is it a different function? I have been in pain management for many years. They have never really gotten my pain controlled to where I can have a somewhat normal life and be able to work 40hrs a week.
If you're growing a nightshade (the common decorative ones are belladonna, brugmansia, and datura) in your garden for ornamental reasons, please put it in its own bed separate from your other plants, particularly if you're growing other plants in the Solanaceae family like tomatoes, but most plants will pick stuff up from their environment, potentially including highly toxic alkaloids like this
Whoah are you serious!? 😮
Do you need to refrigerate the wild lettuce oil?
You Probably ate the leaves of henbane definitely was not wild lettuce
So wait a minute. Can you make rubber from latex from aster family plants? Would that be a suitable alternative source for natural rubber for places that cannot cultivate rubber trees?
I believe that some members of the Aster family have actually been investigated for this very purpose.
