  • When we started our boat hunt we had so many questions with regards to surveying a boat & what the hell a sea trial involved. At the time, there weren't any videos documenting a sea trial or a survey. We had so many questions - who drives the boat? Who is responsible for putting up the sails and getting the boat ready? Well, we learned that one pretty quickly - the broker.

    Good job with the boat surveys, guys. It's nice that your surveyor let you know the initial condition before charging more money.

    We found our Pearson-33 in Indiantown Oct-2010. We went there to look at a steel hull, disheartened by the holes in it and the yard man told us about our boat. It had Toilet (not connected), oven (not hung or connected), anchor (no rode), sink (laid in the hole not connected) and we got it for 10-grand. We motored West through the cannel, turned and came North in the ICW and arrived in our pre-rented slip in Pinellas County in five days. We only did 5.25 knots average and 6-hours a day but the boat did fine. Fortunately, I was a rigger in the Army, A master plumber for a living, taught electronic engineering for five years and earned my FCC and GROL for the VHF radio. I built the boat to make it cushy for her (girls need to NEST), and moved into it in St Petersburg March-2011. We have been living on our boat now for six years and we love it. We go out cruising with our yacht club group occasionally (Bo ca-Ciega-Yacht-Club).When you come to St Petersburg, beware, only two of several slips we were in have issues. Almost every marina we have been in has provided what they say they will. The remarkable ones are the ones that are very bad places to live or visit. In our experience Twin Dolphin is number one to stay away from. Second would be across the river at Regatta Point. All others in the Tampa Bay area have been wonderful. One last thing, 33-feet is big. a few more may be okay, but you pay for it, it's not that much more helpful and there are some places you can't go if your much bigger than 37-feet. Go smaller if you can. Learn what you need then step up later. Also, a 44-foot mast is a long way up. And hang on to the ropes when you go through the locks. When they open, your boat tries to go thru that little slot so HANG-ON. Look us up when you get here. Mary is a nurse.

      Sounds like quite the adventure! We are already located in St. Petersburg - right next to the Dali museum. Love it here and we'll be sure to not check out twin dolphin or regatta point!! Thanks for your support :)

    Keep up the dream! ..and take your time choosing the right boat. We bought our first boat which was too big for us and we lost a bit of money. But we have regrouped and are starting again! Point is don't get down!

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely! We lucked out by going with the smallest boat we saw during our boat hunt - and now that we live in it we realize we could've gone even smaller!

    For me is not "Abandon comfort", from my point of view it would be "Light travel", where basically it is to leave behind everything that is superfluous and to value what you have and where the ingenuity is one more crewman. I wish you the best and only the best from the bottom of my salty heart, Congratulations guys!!!

      Abandoning comfort to us is removing the unneeded like 1000s of square footage we never need and also getting out of our comfort zones :) Thanks for the support!!

    In your first video there were short, glimpses of this boat which showed telltales of other issues which permeated the entire structure. Glad your surveyor talked straight, and you passed. Good call.

    Mantus!! great anchor! 12,000 views already on your second episode..I don't know if there is any appropriate considerations for the H.R. decks as far as a preserver brush on product of some kind. Check into that. Did I see part of a windvane.Oh my gosh!! So nice and expensive. In heavy weather a windvane out stears an autopilot....And.. thats win you really appreciate the help. Probably doesn't need it but I would switch out the impeller. If the existing one fails its a BIG problem , plus your motor overheating and lift pump warping. ( and dismantling part of your motor to dig out the parts.) Watch how sailing ruby rose folks apply lots of comfort to their cruising. I like her morning briefing where she talks through whats going on. Lots of pillows, tea, chats . G.T. There experienced so its nice...

    1st I hope the 2nd boat turns up in much better shape as you have not seen the hull (so far), on first glance it is much more workable than boat A.
    2nd I hope you learn something about old boats from your experience. Typically a certain brand will show the same problems across the line unless there were major changes in const. tech or owner changes. You will spend half your kitty on upkeep and unplanned expenses. You could easily spend 10k repairing the rigging. SY Zero spent almost $9k US to repair his rudder and he did most of the work. That new Yanmar may save your asses one day, take care of her.
    3rd Learn seamanship, take classes, crew other boats on deliveries or passages. Get a Captains lic eventually. Read everything you can find. Always set anchor alarms and make sure you use enough scope, check the set. Also join the group that gives you the best towing deals, you will run aground. Avoid bad decisions and Get There Itis. Take safety seriously, more so underway.
    I have 50 years of boat experience and currently own 4 all in refit lol. Good Luck and following winds.

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks David. We haul out the 2nd boat in the next episode and check out the bottom. SY Zero has a Formosa-build boat so problems should be expected with those considering their construction. Not saying HRs aren't prone to the same issues just saying it's a lot less likely which is why I had to give up the Southeast Asian Boat dream. As for seamanship - I was in the CG for 5 years so know my fair share of navigating & linehandling. Towing memberships were a definite for us given the amount of boats I've seen run aground or need to be pulled back home. 4 boats in refit!? Man more power to you! 1 is plenty for us :) -Ryan

    So, I'm maybe 10 years behind you. The second they tell me I can take an early retirement, I'm gone. I have to admit I got excited to hear you talk about going with an electric engine. I want to do solar/electric and there is really only one other sailing channel that talks about it. So I really hope it works out eventually and you go that route.

    Hi guys.
    Great video and I like your approach. I have a PhD in sailing.........from U of Tube. Looking for my dream yacht as well. Being a bit older my budget is a bit bigger, but I will be going through the same steps. I'm also an Engineer and grew up building and fixing most things so doing my own upgrades and repairs will not be an issue.
    I'll be looking for your next video. Keep the faith. Doing it while you're young is a great way to go. Even if you change your dreams, you will have time to make the adjustment.

    Hi, just started watching your videos and so far I am enjoying them tremendously but would like to offer some feedback. The extended periods during the video with just music are too long, personally I would much prefer to here you both narrate your thoughts. Especially during this decision phase whilst you hunt for your boat. I find the whole reasoning behind a decision to buy or not buy a boat fascinating.

      @AbandonComfort  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @martymorse8967
      @martymorse8967 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congrats on the boat! Nice to see some folks get a boat who were not fooled by the dockside condo giant sailing bathtubs that are popular (until out in bad weather). Definitely concur on getting rid of the teak decks, too hot, and too leaky! Not sure why you'd bother with putting synthetic teak on...a lot of added work (and weight).
      A good, aggressive non skid works well. I've used a mixture of coarse and fine griptex particles and Awlgrip. Put holes in a coffee can, and sprinkle it (onto wet paint) from shoulder height to get a nice, even spread. Wait for the wet Awlgrip to kick some (and gently sweep off the griptex that didn't stick). Use the no-sand recoat time of the paint, then roll a top coat over the griptex, locking it in. Done. If you've paid attention to your taping job, then you'll end up with a handsome looking, low maintenance, easy to clean deck.
      Some other authors to add to your sailing library:
      Beryl & Miles Smeeton
      Hal Roth
      Sir Francis Chicester
      Brian Toss (rigging)
      Nigel Calder (electrical and mechanical systems)
      Alain Gerbault
      A couple pieces of advice:
      Some years ago I was working on a ship. A relief captain came aboard (who had sailed that vessel in the past, but not for some time). He had the crew launch a Clorox bottle with a small weight, and then practiced coming up on it from different directions of wind and tide. A couple hours of practice and he was tuned back in the the ships handling.
      At first I thought the old sailors on the ship were old and slow. After awhile I realized that they were old and wise. A bit of forethought before doing something on a vessel is a wise thing (and can help keep you safe). Straining lines, chain, and spars can bite! So, deliberate action, with planning, can save your fingers, arms, or head!
      Looking forward to the next episode!
      Cheers!

    I hope all your dreams come true, and I think they will. It looks like you have an awesome soulmate who is behind you 100%. That's over half the battle. And always look ahead for those unforeseen expenses that will pop up out of nowhere from time to time. Remember that old saying that always rings true...." A boat is just a hole in the water that you need to keep pouring money into. " But don't let that discourage you, it's not that bad because if done right you will save a lot of money living on the boat while at sea. You will have none of the usual expenses that every home owner has each month. And most important, The air at sea is cleaner, your horizons are wider, and you will have no nosey neighbors getting into your business. Living aboard while tied up at the dock is a different matter but you always have the option of sailing off to better surroundings. Best of luck on your new adventure.

      44wizbang Thank you for the kind words. Kels is definitely my soulmate & best friend - we are two weird peas in a pod, haha. I think home ownership is expensive regardless of if it's a boat or not. Boats get a bad rep because people see them as recreation only so when things break on them (at the same rate it does on a normal house) they get pissed at the boat. Which is where we get all these sayings on boats. If people tracked the amount of money they spent on yard upkeep, electric bills, etc. they'd realize home ownership isn't the greatest return on investment. They're essentially funneling money into the home on a yearly basis for maintenance they getting it back 30 years later and calling it an investment. Just my 2 cents 😎 Thanks for your support!!

    You offered 20 on a boat that was 32 asking. That's 33% less than asking price. Is that typical?

    • @AbandonComfort
      @AbandonComfort  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gwen! I would say an initial offer between 75-85% of asking price is typical. In our case we though the boat was in pretty bad shape so a lower offer was warranted. Hope this helps! - Ryan

    First I don't know what caused that striking out of part of my last email?? If you copy and paste the sentence starting at the words, teak deck, and then when the Hallberg rassy deck info comes up you can scroll down to page 5 Maintenance... they suggest 50/50 bleach water to extricate the black mold and washing down the deck often; I'm guessing so the teak keeps some moisture in it and it doesn't shrink. O.K. my Enclosure . I will hand over to a lady friend a few pre cut pieces, My clear vinyl I will get from Defender.com and My Stamoid (white both sides!!) from sailrite......But darned it ..the way your enclosure needs to be cut and made will be VERY demanding compared to mine. Stamoid may be to hard to work with as there is no stretch....This enclosure your doing should be to die for...If you Go other than white O.K. maybe...but White is the best cool in the sun and looks big inside.. and if your pro can handle stamoid so be it. Kelsie The interior cabinetry of your HR 352 is great. I'm lookin for another video......Gary P.S. There are you tubes of Friday Harbor Where I live. Most of the world cruisers have spent time here... My stamoid doger is in the background of photo.

      Hey Gary - did you email us? or was it a comment? We're going for "toast" sunbrella fabric for the enclosure! We decided it was best to not do this one ourselves and leave it to a canvas shop due to its difficulty given our cockpit & main sheet/traveler set up. We're hoping it comes out as we have planned! We're going to start making our cockpit cushions soon once we recieve our sewing machine from Sailrite :)

    You may be disappointed now, but at least you did not buy a lemon. Yes boats are expensive, and require lots of maintenance. If this is your first boat what you don't want is a boat that consumes your finances just to get into the water. Only buy a fixer upper if you can spend the time and and have the ability yourself to fix it up. Some things you will have to pay professionals to do, but if you pay for everything, you will become broke.

      Electric is just silly. There is absolutely no possibility of having the electric power needed to safely do any reasonable amount of cruising. It is impossible. well I personally don't consider "hours since refit" as a refit could be nothing more than a can of paint as seen by paint on hoses etc often seen on yatchworld photos. All you can do is use commonsense a 40 year old engine is going to be end of life.Florida/Bahama/Caribbean boats power more than sail combined with being in water year round??? means a more suspect engine.Considering that the cost of a repower can cost a large percentage of the boat cost on a 35 footer I would get as much help evaluating the engine before purchase.Surveyors dont usually cover engines

    That was a good survey it showed that it was probably not the boat that you are looking for! Nothing wrong with that! its just a learning lesson of what to look for next time before you pay for a survey. I think with any sailboat 28 ft and over there are so many things to look at, you just need a good and impartial surveyor! Personally I just get to emotional and loose my objectivity.

Colorado is cool too, Love it there in summer, did that after my first sailing in Caribbean adventure, now i'm on the water again in Charleston. Good luck with everything, read lots of books, lots of preparation will save a lot of headaches!

      Michael Thompson Preparation is key for this lifestyle! Sounds like you've had a few of our dream adventures - jealous! We both love Colorado Springs but I really can't do cold or be land-locked. Thanks for your support and hoping your still out there planning your next adventure! - Ryan

    Why the rush? International bank transfer...are you sure the person you are negotiating with is the owner of the boat? Be careful and good luck. Keep the dream alive.

      Good question and unfortunately this is something we couldn't address in the video. So the previous owner was on the fence about selling her and then by the time he said ok I'll sell her it was 3 days before his flight back home for the summer. Given the opportunity/deal on this boat we knew we couldn't wait so we dropped everything to buy her. A lot of trust was involved with the previous owner but he's an incredible guy and now a good friend so everything panned out extremely well.
