    I didn't realize I could do all that with a straight blade. That's exactly what I needed. I appreciate you taking the time to make it look achievable. Gives me the confidence I needed to do it.

      the road blade is likely the most under estimated when it comes to rear attachments. most people opt to use the box blade when actually the road blade can achieve so much in ways the box blade never can. be sure and check my videos where I resurface gravel driveways using the road blade as my main source of recovering and dressing with the existing gravel that is there. its one of my go to implements for many task. I hope to make a few more videos explaining in detail why I use the road blade over the box blade in certain situations. don't get me wrong I love my boxblade and I have an entire series on using and setting the boxblade up properly. still I could not go with out a road blade. its a must have! edit: thank you for the kind words, its folks like you that inspire me to continue making these videos!

      I just got an old Ford road plane and I can’t wait to learn more about it. This thing is heavy duty and I hope to makes swales with it and move topsoil. That is what I got it for. Keep the videos coming. Thank you for sharing your knowledge to only a 4 year veteran of a tractor. I never thought I would be doing the things I have and I am enjoying every moment. Take care. And please keep the videos on the road blade coming.

      thanks Rob, I really appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment and subscribe to my channel. the road blade is a great tool to have. I also use it on gravel driveways in some of my other videos on resurfacing gravel driveways. I believe I use the road blade as much as I use the box blade. in fact the road blade is on the tractor right now as we speak just in case we get snow. again thanks for taking your time to watch my videos. peace love and respect to you and your family! Dave

    Hello Dave Thanks for showing us how to use our 3pt blade to scratch out a nice ditch! I have a L2800 and dug a nice shallow ditch after three passes it looked good and about 300 ft long on my 1000 ft lane. Supposed to get some rain this weekend so I will get to see how well it works.

      thanks a lot of folks claim you should come into the ditch line from the other direction. I choose to not come in that way because I wanted to avoid having to clean dirt off the pavement. I was correct in doing it the way shown in this video. I tried it just for shits and giggles the other way and I ended up with a huge mess that added about two hours of clean up to this task.

    Never had occasion to ditch up against an asphalt road. Am wondering if there are some guidelines on how close you should get to the asphalt with the blade because of potential erosion to the road? The County ditches right up against the asphalt in front of my place but that's the County and on a flat section of road. There is about 18" of rain per year around here including up to 5ft. of snow. Just curious.

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      ideally I could have turned the blade the other way and pulled the ditch further away from the asphalt however that would mean I would have dirt from plowing all over my asphalt to clean up. not a huge deal however if a person watching this has a gravel drive or roadway and they seen me do it that way then they would have lots of dirt on their gravel roadway that is not so easily cleaned up. its always best to have your ditch far away from the road edge however you cant always do that. here I had bushes a light pole and under ground electric lines not very deep that I needed to avoid. I may do a follow up video to this video to show the other way of doing this. thanks for the comment.

  • @simpleman4196

    Hey Dave looks good and done quickly. Iam guessing you could have done it with a box blade also??

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      you sure could the only difference is the box blade will fill with dirt and you will need to spread it or remove it. which honestly may have been a better option. I used the road blade because it cuts a further distance never filling up when its turned on an angle like it is here.

    • @simpleman4196
      @simpleman4196 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dave. I have a box blade just trying to see if it would be worth it to by a road blade.

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      honestly a road blade is an amazing implement and one I choose to use over the box blade in many situations. so if you can pick up a road blade it will be money well spent! I will more likely be doing a video series on the road blade in the future to show what I prefer about it over the boxblade. with that said the two of these implements together are like peanut butter and jelly! they just compliment each other like that.

  • @nogeek43

    Dave, as you plowed the ditch you created a levee of mud on the left side of the ditch. Won't that prevent rainwater from getting into the ditch?

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      my plan was to remove that loose dirt but as it turned out there was so much gravel in it that the rain water simply drained right threw. some dirt did fill the ditch back in a little but not much. its been about 10 month now and it still does its job well. I do have a little run off on the drive way but no where near like I had before. over all it was successful. of course the loose dirt that went to the left was going up hill. it dont look like much of a hill in the video but it is. it would have been better to remove that dirt like you pointed out. thanks for viewing and sharing my video I really appreciate the comment and the input. its been fun making videos for folks to see with the kubota tractor.

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jjfore0921 you are very welcome, I typically make small cuts over and over until I feel like I'm where I need to be. this way I can look at the soil conditions as I go along. every spot is different. your driveway may be really soft on the edges and you may not be able to cut this close to the edge and still avoid erosion. mine is pretty hard clay with rock base so erosion and undermining is not an issue. it would be better to rotate the blade and come the other way cutting the ditch portion further away from the driveway edge.

    Who is the man in your video? Is he your supervisor? He looked at his watch while you were adjusting the blade. So, I guess you were on the clock, huh? For such a basic concept, "tilt the blade and make a ditch" seems the video could have been slightly shorter. I couldn't watch the whole thing. But in case this wasn't mentioned always put your tractor in "low Low" as opposed to "High low" if you have that option. Otherwise your likely to burn up your clutch!

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      funny it has not washed away and its been over 2 years like this. I purposely went this direction to keep from having to clean the dirt off the driveway after the fix was done. its not a permanent fix its more of a maintenance. far better for me this way than to remove all those bushes and my pole light and cut that area down. not to mention I would be encroaching on the neighbors property. so see its not easy to arm chair judge the situation from a video when your not standing here looking at the situation and knowing all the details of the situation at hand. this was the path of least resistance and the results have worked flawlessly so the proof is in the pudding!

    Hi Dave, I've planted my fair share of grass seed and the best way I've found is to scatter a layer of hay or straw over the planted area. It does a great job of prevent wash out. I like what you did with the ditch work, that should prevent your driveway from getting dirt on it. Gotta love Kubotas! I own a BX25 myself. Check out my channel

      +Jon Ritter thanks man I will get some straw for that hill soon. Sorry, I was saying it looks like you actually removed sidewall support for the shoulder of the driveway. Pressure from vehicles is not only distributed down, but somewhat laterally to the side also. When you add in erosion from rain, it appears to me you may have removed some support from the edge.

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Andrew Johnson ok no its actually further away than it appears and no as deep as it appears either. as far as eroding its hard as wood pecker lips and seems to fill in rather than erode. i need to do it again already actually. appreciate the heads up on the risk i was not aware of that so its good to know. i will recheck it when it stops raining. how far away is a safe distance?

  • @randallhighsmith6839
    @randallhighsmith6839 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    what the hell are you doing? you're just making a bigger mess you need to come about 4 foot off the road and a whole lot of material needs to be removed in order to fix this grading issue correctly .. just a Mickey Mouse fix you demonstrated here it is absolutely not acceptable solution 2 this grading problem. you are definitely having tunnel vision issues or you're out of your league here need to look at the whole picture.. minimal there needs to be a drainage ditch four and a half foot wide with a soft belly and it has to be lower than the road grade the ditch doesn't have to be deep digits needs to be a lot wider and give it a very gentle belly so it will be lawn mower friendly and it will not be a washout issue and grass and vegetation will fill in

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I appreciate the comment however that is not the fix i'm looking for. the grade drop is where all the utilities run through at. if its dug down as wide an deep as it needs to be all utilities will need to be moved. this approach although not perfect is the least intrusive least expensive and it worked. I'm sure in time it will need redoing but a year later its still doing a great job of keeping mud off the asphalt. the area is still just as lawn mower friendly as it ever was. the bushes and light pole require weed eater work anyway so stressing over that is simply anal and counterproductive. its easy to sit back and arm chair quarter back not knowing what all the details involved are. its nice to have input from folks and suggestions when given in such a nice tone and respect. thanks again for the input.

    • @randallhighsmith6839
      @randallhighsmith6839 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      daveknowshow you should change the title of your video seriously. in the real world first thing the ditch you cut a ditch that is deadheaded.. top slope should have been toward the road the bottom slope should have been toward the incoming water.. that itself would have not tooken that much more room and most definitely would have not been in the way of a so-called utilities if they are following code.. seriously deadheading a ditch right in to a asphalt road? it's like everything is backwards what you're doing.. if it rains anything to speak about where that is at it will start undercutting... well heck if you have to do this every two years LOL someone might start thinking about artificial grass LOL

    • @daveknowshow
      @daveknowshow  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you should create a channel and make your own videos. you could talk all about drainage stuff and run off. this video simply shows a road blade in use. if I did not have an asphalt driveway I may have pulled the spoil pile toward the roadway. however since my driveway is asphalt and I did not want to have to clean the spoil off the asphalt I did it the other way. plus there is an electrical, phone and cable line I have hit before that runs around this driveway. could it have been done the other way? sure, but with the minimum amount of water run off I had here there was no pressing reason to do it that way. there has been zero undercut so your wrong and that is not a problem in this situation. many ditches are dug on road sides with a grade all machine. many times the bank is cut back four feet. this was not an option here. I'm glad you are enjoying my videos and I hope you will watch it again and again. I like the title of this video as it seems to work well in driving internet traffic towards my channel. of course that does mean that you get these occasional engineers who know it all and have their own method of doing things. you also get trolls from time to time who like to debate and argue a point that is actually pointless. if you look at the video again you will notice the tractor is driving on a slope the blade is also additionally sloped. this means the end of the blade as well as the bottom of the blade is cutting. because of the extreme angles of the blade it is creating a slope from the road toward the ditch line as well as a slope from the road frontage toward the road. there is NO DEAD HEAD situation. this likely does not look to be true in the video do to it not being three dimensional. I hope you watch the video again and leave many more comments. the more comments the more this video reaches a larger audience. thank you for helping promote my channel.

    • @chub4play
      @chub4play 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. Even if I don't know how much water comes down that driveway and I have no idea how much footage he has on that side. Spending thousands on a concrete drainage ditch is obviously the only answer.
      I dug up my phone line once, making a wide, unnecessary culvert. I showed them. Thereafter they went to great expense to run their lines far away from anywhere I might be using my unique earthmoving skills.
      I would suggest a more flat bottom for the water (to increase friction, slow down the water and be less likely to wash out especially on that steep a grade), not a "v-shape" or "belly" unless he does the smart thing and spends hundreds on a concrete truck. And the forms. And the labor. Then it wouldn't be so Micky Mouse.
      He should have never done the best he could with what he has.
      And he needs a better looking dog.
      P.S. If water gets under that asphalt he will have a much more ambitious project than cutting that ditch. And use a pin that will shear going that close to the driveway. Getting that blade hung up could tear up something quickly if that quick-change pin won't shear.
