Awesome - I needed a visual aid for learning this tune. Putting this at half speed and playing it slowly really helped me out. Thank you for uploading! You did a very nice job.
Thanks Fooly, yeah it's all there, except the extra high 'E' string pluck on the 'G' bottom note of Emajor, just before the full Amajor chord that closes each verse. (if that makes sense) as in... Bass notes 'D' 'A' 'C' 'G' '(E-high)' 'E-Low' You we always saying that the devil may care but you're lost and you can't be found... You can almost sing "E-high E-Low" as your playing it. If you've listened to the original recording, you'll notice it and apply it later on once you've mastered the rudiment parts. I've just been a general lazy guitarist lol. Get it learned!
at first i was like why is he looking at himself and his nails and then you nailed it! love you uploaded it with mistakes and all very organic! #nofiltergameisreal
Thanks for saying Lilly! Half Moon Run are such a great bunch of talented guys. I really enjoy this song. Their two albums are really 'front to back' listeners for me. Continually very 'Summer / Autumn' albums. Have a great Autumn. Keep in touch.
Cheers Henri! I'm glad you liked it. I don't know if you saw, but I included a link below the video to the Songsterr website where I learned the song from. If after a while you're still really struggling with it, or I get more requests for a tutorial, I'll make a breakdown video. Give it a good try!
I really appreciate you taking the time to message me dude, gracias! :D I've had really good response from this video, I wish I made more of an effort to record a better performance. I'll do better next time. All the best to you!
Aye mate, but really it's a wee bit pants, I promise to do better next time. Glad you liked it though. Now, go and tell your family you love them, they won't be around forever. If you've already done this, do it again, and try to be less of an arsehole in general. Come back and tell me when you've completed this task I've bestowed, it is of great importance to the balance of our universe, and you will feel better. Much love Alexis. Also, give me a suggestion of what I could cover next. Nothing too hard though. Mal x
mal stone : ahah no problem buddy, I was wondering where did that nice answer came from! it's funny because I am currently living with my mother in France since I'll be studying here for 5 months (I usually live in Montreal). I can assure you that I tell her everyday how much I love her and how grateful I am for what she does for me... so your comment wasn't so off after all :) I highly recommand that you try to cover other HMR tunes since your voice's tone and your scottish accent fit really well with their songs. I also love bands like Lumineers, Bon Iver or Fleet Foxes (you could try their famous song "Mykonos" or "The Shrine") have a good day mal! keep it up :)
Haha, Cheers Leonard, very much! Yeees, I made a couple of flops in it. I've had really good responses from the covers I've recorded so far, more positive than I ever expected. I don't want to fall into making them too flashy, but I am going to work much harder on the quality of the performances from now on. I love this song. I take it you're a fan of Half Moon Run? got any favourite songs? I find it hard to pick one, both albums are so good start to finish.
Dude, you're way too self-critical!! It's really good, seriously. Especially as it is such a hard song to play along with singing. I like the chilled vibe too. And yeah I'm a huge fan! My favourite song tends to vary from month to month, depending on my mood, but I'd have to say my favourite is It Works Itself Out. However there's also Figure Out, Give Up, Trust, The Debt and Full Circle which I love. Then in the 'third category of favourites' there's Devil May Care, Unofferable, Turn your Love and Narrow Margins etc.. I'm in the same position as you, that I absolutely love both albums start to finish, so it's hard to rank the songs. Plus I'm the sort of guy who likes to listen to albums in full so I get used to certain songs coming after others and think the whole album tells a story as you listen to it. Have you managed to see them live? I saw them last March in Birmingham and they were amazing!! I seemed to be the only person who knew the words to *every* song as well, which I'm definitely proud of haha. I'd love to meet the guys after their next gig I go to, would be buzzing my tits off if I could ha!!
Mate, I am exactly the same, I can't listen to single songs on their own, I like full albums, HMR have two absolute belters, like you say they've captured a great mood throughout. They played up here in Glasgow last March but I missed them, really wish I got a ticket now cause it might be ages till they come back.
Ah that's gutting. Make sure ya see them when they tour the UK again. I'm hoping they'll be back in Summer or Autumn. For now, I'm happy watching TH-cam videos of them! If you didn't already know, there's a great account called 'JL Abrassart' who is a Canadian person that has been to quite a few HMR gigs and posts them all on here. check it out!
You was always saying that the devil may care That you're lost and you can't be found But now you've got to thinking we'll drive the coast from town to town You keep trying to leave, but the car keeps breaking down You was always sleeping like the day before noon Cause you're living on another one's time Yet once again we let out at dawn To skip the warden's fine I said "isn't that like stealing?" You said "to steal is just to find" Ooh you like to get to where you can't turn back You should not be Oh I believe that does it for you That does it for me You was always saying that anything that happens Is no worse than anything else That every moment matters And that truth can be your wealth Yes every moment good or bad In and of itself You was always saying where you kin come from they was hard, But they was right Then someone had an accident We said "oh what a pitiful sight" Then someone flipped a pickup truck And we heard that someone had died Ooh you like to get to where you can't turn back You should not be Oh I believe that does it for you But that does it for me Ooh you like to get to where you can't turn back You should not be Oh I believe that does it for you But that does it for me
Interesting. I transcribed this song by ear, and you and me both add two additional notes that aren't in the tab (and probably aren't actually in the song).
I did the same thing! I also miss an open 'E' on the 4th bar of each verse. Once I figured the chords out with tabs and ear, I just try to appropriated accordingly. I'm a typical, averagely gifted musician; i.e, I'm lazy, and try to get away with as much as possible. I'm glad you liked it Matt. Thanks for saying Hi. Keep in touch mate.
im actually in love with your version of this. It's one of my favourite hmr songs and you definitely did it justice!!!
Best cover I’ve seen of this song mate, incredibly talented.
Such a good cover!
I wanna play guitar like you some day
Absolutely incredible!
Wonderful performance mal
Beautiful!

Hey Mal! can you make a tutorial of that sweet finger picking you have there? ill would be awesome! thanks! good work!
You was always saying that the devil may care
That you're lost and you can't be found
But now you've got to thinking we'll drive the coast from town to town
You keep trying to leave, but the car keeps breaking down
You was always sleeping like the day before noon
Cause you're living on another one's time
Yet once again we let out at dawn
To skip the warden's fine
I said "isn't that like stealing?"
You said "to steal is just to find"
Ooh you like to get to where you can't turn back
You should not be
Oh I believe that does it for you
That does it for me
You was always saying that anything that happens
Is no worse than anything else
That every moment matters
And that truth can be your wealth
Yes every moment good or bad
In and of itself
You was always saying where you kin come from they was hard,
But they was right
Then someone had an accident
We said "oh what a pitiful sight"
Then someone flipped a pickup truck
And we heard that someone had died
Ooh you like to get to where you can't turn back
You should not be
Oh I believe that does it for you
But that does it for me
Ooh you like to get to where you can't turn back
You should not be
Oh I believe that does it for you
But that does it for me
Thanks for this x
To mal remember me the guy that told u to do utube congrats on the views
