My WORST Regrets |luxury designer shopping mistakes| for minimalist wardrobe and curated collection.

  • Hi guys, I'm Eileen. In this video, I want to open up about the worst decisions I've made on my journey of luxury shopping. After a decade of designer shopping, I now have a small luxury collection of bags, fine jewelry, designer shoes and beautiful ready to wear. I would say my current wardrobe is curated (almost minimalist), but I was certainly guilty of mindless shopping spree. The thing is, the more I bought, the more I craved for consumerism and shopping addiction. Deep inside me, I felt like no amount of unboxing would satisfy my need for dopamine-- I was in a rat race. I really hope this video will give you a more realistic view about luxury shopping. In my honest opinion, some luxury content does promote excessiveness. The weekly unboxing and haul videos might lead viewers to think shopping addiction is the only way to enjoy luxury. For me, buying less means I now truly appreciate the things I do have, rather than constantly looking for the next thing to buy. Let's shop sensibly and responsibly xx

Omg... Your story about your husband driving you to the boutique sounds just like mine. Now in my late 40’s, I look back and realize how silly it was to have an obsession and own an object instead of enjoying a nice time together to celebrate important milestone occasions. We all live and learn. Thanks so much for giving me an opportunity to reflect back on past and silly mistakes.

I recently discovered that I was buying things to make me feel good, but once I received it, the chase was over and I was on the hunt for the next thing. I started reducing my collection a little over a year ago and am much happier with just a few nice pieces. I still have two items I want to sell but Fashionphile is saturated with inventory and no longer taking my items. Not judging but because of the pandemic this past Christmas there were long lines outside of LV and Burberry. The mall I like is an open mall called Oak Brook and it was cold. Sadly the majority of the people I saw looked poor. I hope that whatever they purchased made them happy. When I was young and poor I had one Payless purse. I was just as happy then as I was when I bought my first LV in 2003. Not about the purse LOL I mean in my life.

I've got preloved bags and only a few that I paid retail, but then again I got them reduced. I've got enough to be happy with. There's always someone with more, or to their minds, better or newer. A few weeks back I got my nails done (don't usually do this but it was a bonding thing with a friend) and she had the latest Gucci camera style bag which was a particular shade of blue, and then I saw it twice again in the same place! There weren't many women in this nail place, and I thought: what's the point? If so many have the latest it's no longer special.
It's just new, but that novelty will fade soon. All of these women paid full retail price, it's a LOT of $.
Meanwhile I have some bags that are not sought after bags except by a minority. For example Morabito is based in Paris and top quality. Few know this, so I could get bargains in preloved market. It's a very brand-driven logo-driven phenomenon which I steer clear of except for one LV bag which I bought originally to flip. But it turns out I actually like it, it's the LV Alma PM in monogram and I like the shape as I'm tall and slim. The bigger size suits me. Most people seem to assume it's a fake but it isn't. How ironic! lol!

I can relate to shopping and feeling fulfilled for a few days and on to more purchases after. I've experienced one Louis Vuitton wallet that peeled and cracked. Never did I want anything from LV again.
I'm NOT into acquiring a collection of bags. A collection would overwhelm me. I must admit, I have had ZERO regrets due to a resolution I made a years ago. I return immediately what I don't wear. I know the stores return policy and make a decision by the end date to prevent regret and impulse purchases.

Great advice. I have sure learned the hard way, few weeks ago I went to my local LV boutique to repair my 6 key holder. And for whatever reason I decided to try on the Pochette Metis in monogram, after trying on on the bag. The SA says to me that the bag just got in this morning, I know in my heart of heart I do not need the bags but decided to get it anyway. Then the SA said how do you want to pay? Cash or Card? Then I ask myself do you really need the bag or just because some of your friends have it? I kindly told her sorry I think I'll pass on this one. Great content as always

While everyone else has 20+ bags in their collection, I only have less than 10 bags in my collection including Birkin & Kelly.

Wise thoughts. I made the same mistake when I watched TH-cam content that focused on hauls and luxury items I thought I really needed. I went on a Chanel earrings phase. Now I hardly wear any of them and regret the money I could’ve saved for a real gold item instead of costume jewelry. That’s the danger of social media influence. You always have to be aware of it if you’re gonna watch that content. Good advice!

Thanks for sharing your advice with such honesty. I think the biggest takeaway is to not allow luxury brands to define who we are. It’s so easy these days to let the social media fuel our desire for the latest and ‘most sought after’ pieces, to the point that we get desensitized with the huge price tags and consider them normal splurges just because many others have them. Learning to be content with a few classic pieces that we really love and will wear for a long time takes a lot of wisdom and discipline!

Thank you for sharing this. I feel like you shared so many hard truths! You are totally right about spending the time instead on real things of value: real investment, self esteem, self care and time with loved ones. It’s so refreshing to hear your honesty when so many influencers are about buy, buy, buy.

Thank for sharing Eileen. I have made mistakes in the past too and I totally agree about peer pressure. The people I surround myself with now don’t pressure me to buy things. There was a youtuber I used to follow who used to encourage me to buy stuff all the time because she was buying stuff all the time and she would get credit if I bought certain items. I realized how the people around me have such a big influence. This video has definitely given me food for thought.

Thank you so much, Eileen! I SO needed this. I have to save this video and keep watching it in the future when I need a reminder again. I'm not even into fashion or in the market of any high-end bags/jewelry...but I am a stationary addict and have collected so many leather notebooks, fine stationaries and casual bags...when you add up, it's still A LOT of money spent unnecessarily! I stumbled upon your video while searching for a handmade leather backpack...lol. Love your contents and I've learned a lot about fashion and intentional spending after watching your videos in the past few days. This one is what I need THE MOST. I absolutely agree with every words in this video. Thank you for sharing!

Thank you so much for sharing your personal thoughts with us. Obsessing over bags or any other item for that matter is soo silly. Spending quality and alone time with your significant other is way more meaningful than wasting a whole afternoon dragging that poor soul from one store to another..... Eileen, thank you so much for your advice because lately I have been falling under the same bandwagon and determining my happiness over luxury purchases. You have stated with wise words what I have been struggling with; happiness is not dependent on materials but rather on experiences at the moment with significant people. Thank you so much, your message is what I needed to clear my mind. 🥰

Luxury goods companies purposely raise their prices every year in order to create an urgency for their customers to buy now. In other words, if a potential customer doesn't buy the desirable Rolex watch or luxury handbag today, it will cost more money if they buy it next year or 2 years down the road. It's basically creating a psychological FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) for their prospective customers.

    • @ColourfulNoir

I can't agree more! The fear of missing out has pushed many of us into buying thing we don't really think xx

hi Eileen, thank you so much for sharing , exactly what i have been through along my luxury bag journey. Wasted so much money and things doesn't really change for the past 10 years.
i was in the credit card debt as well, just because of owing a luxury bag.
However, its ok for me to see people doing unboxing, i feel happy for them. Just that i am more wiser in spending my money.
I started to practicing minimal lifestyle in where i noted its such a chaos and troublesome when i want to move out with plenty of things inside the house or wardrobe .
Happy to see your sharing and thank you for your sincere thought as well.
    Happy New year

I am glad you are so honest!! Luxury is definitely NOT an investment. To make money out of a Hermes or Chanel would actually require quite a lot of $ to get the right piece, usually limited edition. Overall, rarely generate profit and very few people can reach the goal.
