  • Not all super heroes wear capes, some just improve the Super Nintendo games that suffer for slowdown. The SNES was and will always be one of my favourite consoles of all time, it's so nice to see that many of the games are getting some QoL improvements decades later.
    Project FastROM was started by the legendary ‪@HackerVilela‬ and is still going strong today, courtesy of kandowontu.

    The Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), commonly known as the Super Nintendo, is a highly revered and iconic video game console that revolutionized the gaming industry in the 1990s. Released by Nintendo in 1990, the SNES followed the success of its predecessor, the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and quickly became a global sensation.
    The SNES boasted impressive hardware capabilities for its time, offering 16-bit graphics and stereo sound, allowing for immersive gaming experiences. Its sleek and compact design, with its distinctive purple and gray color scheme, captured the imagination of gamers worldwide. The console introduced a variety of iconic games and franchises that are still beloved today, such as Super Mario World, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Metroid.
    One of the SNES's most significant features was its innovative controller, which introduced the concept of shoulder buttons and introduced a more ergonomic design. This controller layout set the standard for future console controllers and remains influential to this day.
    The SNES also saw the introduction of the Super FX chip, a graphics enhancement chip that allowed for advanced 3D rendering in games like Star Fox. This innovation pushed the boundaries of what was possible in console gaming at the time.
    With its vast library of games and technical advancements, the Super Nintendo left an indelible mark on the gaming industry. Even today, it holds a special place in the hearts of many gamers, representing a golden era of gaming and nostalgia for those who experienced its magic firsthand.

    For me, I love all the slow down it is how I know that the SNES is being pushed hard and I must be playing a good game!

    • @jsr734
      @jsr734 ปีที่แล้ว

      to be fair, lots of slowrom games don´t suffer slowdowns that offen or at all, because the developers knew they were running slow so they optimized better. By the contrary i have found that lots of native fastrom games tend to slowdown more offen.😆

    I guess I have to ask what is fast rom exactly and why developpers didn't use it. Is it a completely new thing or are there tradeoffs? Not sure I understand what fastrom is

      I do cover it in the video

      is basically setting the snes cpu clock speed from 2.68Mhz (slowrom) to 3.58Mhz (fastrom). There are more complex technicall stuff but that is the simplest way to look at it.
      Most developers probably decided to ship their games in slowrom chips to keep manufacturing cost low as cartidges with fastrom chips were more expensive.

    The shmups on the SNES really benefit.
    Games like Gradius 3 and Super R-Type were widely criticised on release for the slowdown issues.

    kandowontu is a beast of romhacking, on another topic I'm surprised you didn't do a video about the recent release of mega man the sequel wars on mega drive. I recommend you to try it in case you missed the information.

      Megaman the Sequel works is on the to-do list.

    Super Metroid is getting a SA-1 fix.

  • @jsr734
    @jsr734 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, if you have never played these games before i recomend playing the normal slowrom version first, then play the fastrom hacks. You will never appreciate the fastrom versions if you don´t know where the original games had slowdowns.

    • @PixelCherryNinja
      @PixelCherryNinja  ปีที่แล้ว

      You make a valid point, but personally, I just go straight in to the fast ROM if I've never played the game before.
      The only reason not to use fast ROMs is strictly due to nostalgia.

    • @jsr734
      @jsr734 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PixelCherryNinja Actually...some games didn´t need the upgrade: Super Turrican and Turtles in time, and Darius Twin for example.I don´t remember any instance of slowdown in the original games.

    One of my favorite hacks is the SuperFX 2 + FastRom hack of Star Fox. It's crazy playing a polygonal 16-bit game at that framerate.

      Thanks Drew, I know Bout it but haven't tried it. I got into Star Fox 🦊 from the N64. I remember seeing the SNES version, but I never played it for more than a few minutes at a friend's house.
