The best of all the Yes solo albums IMHO - would have been interesting to hear how it sounded if given the full band treatment. I think 'Parallels' was missed off this album and reworked for 'Going For The One'. Love how Chris goes back to his youth as a choirboy, with the vocal and orchestral arrangements, even involving his old choirmaster - just wonderful

Ah, memories. I bought Fish Out of Water, Olias of Sunhillow and Beginnings (Steve Howe) practically the second each came out.
Squire often sang behind Anderson in Yes, sometimes practically word for word, which is probably why his singing was reminiscent of Yes vocals.
He was far and away the greatest bassist in modern history.

There’s no one better on the Bass, IMO. All of those Yes tunes were heavily influenced by Squire. If you’ve ever been blessed to see him live, he’s so animated and he has so much fun on stage.

I first heard this album not quite 40 years ago, and it is probably the best of all of the Yes solo albums, It has a richness and character unlike any of the other projects and as you will see on side two, there's Even more complexity taking this music into other directions.

I truly love this album . A Bass player makes an album and the Bass is front and centre and everything hangs of it. The compositions are great the orchestrations superb probably in the top ten of my favourite albums ever. It evolves the tempo changes add a excitement that you no longer get with strict tempo on the grid recording. You can feel the mood in the room as these guys just blow through a tune. Squire what a legend. When he passed I had a hole open in my life that would never be filled again. Some of the genius in this is that there is almost no guitar on a rock record and you do not even notice. MR Squire you have and always will be my hero.

It just sounds so British ... ... The flower power is strong with this one ...
The second song "Silently Falling" starts off so pastoral its like an English countryside walk on a Spring morning, but then goes right into fantasyland
with an urban melee of confusion and busyness (Bill Bruford is amazing, but does not bash your brains in, leave that to the organist!) .
The "Circling effect" on the original Quadraphonic LP was 100% amazing -- worth seeking out.

In the winter of '75, we had a massive snow storm in NJ. I lived in an apartment with large window that looked out into a courtyard. At night there were flood lights that illuminated the courtyard. During that blizzard , one flood light was all that was visible through the white out. But as each snow flake slowly fell past that light, each one was lit up One night, as the blizzard continued, I wrapped myself in a blanket and sat in front of the window watching the snow fall past the floodlight for hours. And what was playing on the stereo on endless repeat? Silently Falling. It was like Squire had written that song for just this occasion. I have never forgotten the magical way it made me feel.

Ranging through my mind over Yesfolk solo projects, I'd have to say they all did pretty damn well. Steve's was the only I didn't own, and I tended to gravitate more toward Jon's wondrous Olias and Rick's differentiated and lovely Wives. Patrick Moraz' first solo album, with "Best Years of Our Lives" and "Cachaca" is another worth checking out. All of their work is a cut above most every other band at the time, and since, really. I will admit to being spoiled by Jon's voice, but if he had sung on this it would have been just another Yes album. Looking forward to side 2.

Chris was a unique bass player, and the counterpart of Steve and Jon as the main songwriters for Yes. His signature lies in the immediately recognizable sound, which is for me one of the trademarks of Yes music. With his formal musical education as a choir boy, he could easily sing the high backing vocals and meanwhile set out a very harmonized bass line (J.S. Bach) Now that's what I call true musicianship. Once you get to know the signature of the bandmembers (for me it stops with GFTO), that's what made YES unequaled ! Enjoy side 2....

Here’s hoping you have purchased the 2022 remaster/REMIX. Yup, a remix, which has been long overdue.
Everything on the prior mixes had ‘ muddy’ spots. Never really detracted from the album, it was all there was to reference.
The new mix is crystal, like we would expect from Yes. I am an aficionado of anything that utilizes Tubular Bells and Chris was chummy with and I am sure influenced by Mike Oldfield at the time. The Bells in Hold Out Your Hand now literally jump out at you.
I discovered Yes and Prog Music in general in an extended search for the song Fountains by Starcastle. It just took that single song to change my musical tastes 180 degrees.
I found Fountains after I gave up looking for it. Discovered Yes, Emerson Lake and Europe, PFM from Italy, all the greats.

Great album. Often described as the Yes album that never was. Interestingly in the same year Steve Hackett released his first solo album (Voyage of the Acolyte) while still a member of Genesis and that was described as the Genesis album that never was - it was a corker too!

Chris really made the best of the Yes-solo albums of the 70s, with perhaps the exception of the band Bruford, which rocked pretty hard in the jazz-fusion direction. Steve Howe had some great instrumental songs on his albums, but others suffered from him not being a strong lead singer.

Bought this album in 1976. Loved it from the first listen. Squire was an amazing artist and sadly missed :( The middle section of Silently Falling is heavily influenced by Patric Moraz. Take it to a another level and listen to Patrick' s solo album: "The Story of I" - Quite the journey in itself. Happy Holidays and thank you for all the reactions! :)

Funny you should say You By My Side sounds Christmassy (it's heralded in by the orchestral bit at the end of Hold Out Your Hand - an almost invisible transition you didn't notice). My mum bought this for me for Xmas 1975 (the year my dad left home - not such a bad thing in hindsight) and that one track just says Christmas to me. As everyone says the best of the solo albums and sadly not heard much live as far as I know.

The ONLY negative is that Yes never performed any of this album. I would have lost it at a Yes show if they'd done Hold Out Your Hand or Lucky Seven. They would have knocked it out of the park. An absolute classic prog album and Squire's finest musical moment. (Doesn't hurt to have Bill Bruford playing drums either.)

  • @gaughin1

Don’t know this album. I always love his base playing because he (mostly?) plays the base with a plectrum.
Sounds like Yes with a different singer 😇. And now you mention that too 😜. I write my comments while listening 😋
I heard worst solo albums by members of great bands throughout the years.
This isn’t bad at all. Would I buy it…maybe, maybe not. Is it special enough, I’m asking myself. Jon Anderson’s latest album, I probably would buy.
Such a shame he passed away.

No it’s interesting that you say it sounds like Yes, because I don’t think so. I’ve been following Yes for years, they are my favorite band, but this album is very different to me. With a much heavier jazz influence, which is surprising because Chris was never much of a jazz freak. But this does not sound like Yes to me. This album does have a lot of the 7/4 time which he uses a lot in Yes as well. Said it was his favorite odd time signature.

One of the best things about this album is you finally get a big dose of Chris' vocal on its own, so that you can train your ear to know what it sounds like. It makes listening to Yes albums more interesting when you can know what he's contributing to the vocal mix. For example, Chris often favored the long "ee" sound in his vocal lines, so even on Drama with some of the vocals Trevor Horn sings you can tell where Chris wrote the lyrics.
