      To reinforce this fact, in Ep1, when David first gets back to his apartment after the accident, there are are a few shots with this uniform pants and shirt neatly folded; presumably done by his mom.

    I think the fact that he trust her is due to his situation. He is alone, his mother just died, he have a huge money issue and of couse he is a teen with tons of hormones.
    So when a beautiful girl appears, its kind with you ang give you a way to make money he just went with it.
    As for her "betrayal" you will figure it out next episodes why she did it but keep in mind in Night City you cant really trust anyone beside yourself.
    I mean there are people whose "job" is to kidnap random people kill them and stole their cyberware. So yeah even if she betrayed him so fast randomly its not a strange thing, instead thats quite expected to be honest, thats night city, why someone should be gentle with you to begin with?
    Its not like they know each others or they were friends, she just flirted to get something, not that strange.

    • @GsusCrust
      @GsusCrust 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I also think that it makes sense for him to trust her, not only by the point you started but because of the set of events:
      They meet
      They do a partnership
      They succeed and get paid
      He gets sick and she gets him help
      She rescues him like 2 times
      And then she invites him to her house to chill.
      The story might be told a little fast, but it all makes sense.

    I don't understand the confusion at the end of the episode. She obviously betrayed him in order to give the implant to those specific people. The dude at the end even says the implant is his.
    In fact, a lot of things you're asking questions about are either already explained, or expected to be understood because it's not very complicated. He trusts Lucy because he dropped out, has no parents, and has no idea what to do with himself. As for the "male gaze" stuff... lol

    10:15 If you are referring to the scene in the ambulance. Why would Lucy trust the paramedic to cut her in on the deal? By calling in her own deal she can make more profit, plus less risk because she would probably call people she already knows.
    12:15 "Why would he trust her?" Probably because she only person that he could talk informally with? Maybe because they spent the day doing jobs, she saved him from getting his implant stolen, and she took him to a doc instead of just leaving him on the street? Why did agree to go to Lucy's place? David's got nothing else going on. What's waiting for him at home? The events in ep1 put him in a weird headspace and he wants to do something anything. You can also say, from a character perspective, it show his naivete.
    15:20 "I don't really care about the people..." Welcome to Night City, you'll fit right in.

    The girl, Lucy, is a hacker (a runner). She's causing their chips to eject by hacking them.

    • @Findail
      @Findail 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To elaborate, you can't just fish for the chips with your fingers. Like with some sim cards/SD cards (even old CD's) there's usually an ejection system built in. Lucy is just cranking that shit up to spit the chips at a faster than normal rate. Much like runners are able to screw with optical implants to cause blindness, fuck up the immune system with the spinal implants, or just cause cybernetics to overheat causing the user to self combust.

    • @kingmanic
      @kingmanic 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Media vs game. They enforce different rules. The songs do have a copyright. Game makers tend not to chase people for it as they feel all the content on top adds value to their product. TV and Movies studios are not as forgiving and you can only get it wrong 3 times on TH-cam before they delete your channel. Anime tends not to chase over seas violators due to the difficulty of international law but they literally arrest copyright violators in Japan. This one is distributed by Netflix who might be less kind than videogame companies.

    Here is a question: if the dude is day away from being 18, is it still a problem? What about older generation experiencing sex with each other when they were 14-17? Is it about numbers specifically? If not, then is it about maturity? Cause those two seem mature enough for me to do what they want together.
    This show gives you the reality check, when people and "kids" live in anarchic world where "childhood" doesnt exist and sexual experiences lost their value, the genuine show of affection between two young people is about the most pure thing this world can offer. Live fast, die young.

    Ok so a couple things, while I must admit the show is fast paced and could definetly benefit from fleshing out the characters more, David's already a pretty relatable protagonist in terms of what we know about him. I mean think about it, there are plenty of kids that were in episode 1 David's position. Don't like school, don't have a passion so they don't have that thing they're good at, which if I remember correctly you guys said in the first episode you hoped he would have had another trait to make him more relatable. But thats reality for a lot of teenagers. They hate school, don't have anything they're good at, so they just sort of live day to day which is what David was doing before his mom died. Playing video games, going to school and kinda just bumming around. As for Lucy's betrayal, thats just to be expected. Its a shady city, David made the mistake of trusting the first good looking girl to talk to him, especially right after the trauma of losing his mom. It's both understandable and realistic, don't trust people you meet off the street.

    I can tell you guys didn't play the game much. And if you did you missed the world that was created. The world of Cyberpunk is a unforgiving place filled with riches, despair, depravity & pain. Friends are hard to come by and survival in this world takes as much dumb luck as it does skill & resources. Worrying about the age of the characters for sexual purposes is pretty funny considering you're not worried that she set up that 17 year old boy to be killed for that implant.

    Goals are a luxury for people who have their needs already met. This is Night City, you're worrying about so many things that are practically common place in Night City. It's not a forgiving place and it doesn't give a shit how old, young, male or female, wtv it's residents are.
    I can never understand western "sensibilities" when it comes to works of fiction, even if it's appropriate for the setting and for a mature audience. Sex is so uncomfortable, but ultra-violance even at kids is acceptable. I also don't get how you can agree with sex themes for something like Euphoria, but somehow then think it's out of character for a dystopian setting like Night City.
    But I get it, it's pref. Fair 'nuff.

    I suppose it's harder to digest the content if you're extremely unfamiliar with cyberpunk settings and this sort of compressed storytelling as a whole.
    Every scene and sentence presents you with a ton of information.
    Nobody is going to hold your hand for an exposition dump of the whole setting and what each individual set piece represents. They'll never sit you down and take sixteen minutes to explain what Choom and Preem mean, what Brain Dances are, what Cyberpsychosis fully entails, why living in Night City is a struggle, or who each cast member is and what they're about.
    You get all this information and more through implication, context and visual design. This is storytelling in motion and it's magnificently done.

    My 2 cents is a reaction video that is multiple episodes or episodes 3-10. I agree that this is an anime that seems intended to be binged. I finished it in to days and did feel connected to the characters. And the slots are what make it possible for a net runner to fry someone’s brains. The slots have mini software that store our memories and personal data is how I thought of it which would make them value enough to steal.

    In Japanese anime, 17 is the default age of most protagonists.
    FMA is a good example of it. In the 80's it was more like 13 or 14.
    Japan is much more liberal with sexual stuff happening to teens than American movies or series, and it's been like this for decades.
    It's a cultural thing. No need to get flustered about it.

    11:06 They do mention that in the first ep that he'd a straight A student.
    When you're in a braindance you're unaware of the outside world to easy to get jumped (He's wearing the sandy so can easy escape if chased otherwise).
    idk seems like they aren't into anime as a genera bc as animation goes this is pretty much in the same style and even top tier for that matter. Maybe they haven't watched much anime before so will have to get used to it. Might be why they feel so disconnected and confused to a point where they criticize at every step and miss dialogue and plot points. Like its supposed to be 2077 in a very futuristic world and they wanna know the specifics of each cyberware and how it works lol
    Also he said he spent a lot of time in the game - but sounds like he hasn't spent enough lol ..how does he not know what a sandevistan is or armored skin, BDs, all the types of hacking, the hyper-sexualized and extreme capitalist society in game (Sex sells), etc. But also since body implants are so prominent, people lose touch with todays standards of "shame" bc it's most of the time not even their body.
    All in all so far seems like they're just hate watching ahah, hope they like it more in the following eps. The show is more about the world than the characters. David is a story about the life of the lower class in this world trying to be better in his own way lol. But David's a relatable character to a lot of people either way, especially the less privileged.

    the more I watched this show, the more I cared about everything and everyone in it. It just kept building, rather than hooking me all at once, it was more gradual. It definitely feels designed to be binged in 1-3 sessions, rather than watched episodically, so releasing it as an episodic show really does feel like a weird choice.

    Hey thanks for the review!! I have seen the whole series multiple times! And like I said before it is not for everyone. I really appreciate the effort tho!! If you keep going you may like it more! As others have said, these "episodes" are DEFINITELY "vignettes of a single-thread larger story" and not really viewable individually. And... unfortunately if you don't play the video game or the TTRPG or understand the "base lore" it might be a little confusing, because, as David pointed out, the plot moves very very quickly and they... don't take time to explain very much. But... having played the living crap out of the video game, it took me a couple run-throughs to grok the whole thing. ... haha sorry I keep editing more on this comment... Edgerunners does not "build a world". Edgerunners is "a story in the world that is built by the Cyberpunk 2077 video game." And, yeah, it's basically a 200 minute (3H 20 M) movie.

    You guys are way past this... but Lucy was ejecting the chips. She is a netrunner. Her skill is hacking. She was remotely ejecting the chips while also manipulating each target to not feel it. She normally does this one person at a time but with David's help she can just eject like 5 chips at once and he grabs them all in a second.

    David and Lucy aren't watching a video, they're experiencing a BrainDance together ^^; If you played the game (which you said you have), you've experienced a few of these too! :)
    Basically it's putting a completely different location or person directly into your brain's synapses so anything you experience in there will translate to your brain as if you really experienced it. It's why when you're watching the braindance tutorial in the game, with the shoplifter getting shot at the end, V cries out in terror as they wake up, because despite the amount of blockers Judy puts in, dying still is a very visceral experience.

    thanks for the reaction, you definitely need to continue, it will be interesting to see your evolution and point of view changing towards the situation and characters.
    I agree that it feel like a movie in 10 part more than really a series, and the first 3 episodes need to be watched in one sitting for you to really start to appreciate the show I guess, and if you don't remembered the world of the game well and night city well you will miss a few things but that said it's worth watching it regardless.
    Plus I really think you need to watch the show considering it's not our world, it's cyberpunk 2077 world, you can't project the mores of our society in 2022 in everything you see in the show, it's a world with extreme poverty, with corporations superpower, with advance technology, violence, sex everywhere,(to be fair our world is already kinda like that tho lol) it's not our current world, people are trying to survive everyday, he's 17 years old yes, but he has seen everything already in a world like that, you seems to watch and care about details relative to our situation in 2022, not his situation in 2077, so it's putting you off the show and you don't understand why you should care. (and remember it's an anime, not everything need to be absolutely logical, it's also about style and cool and fun )
    I think David don't need any friend or special ability for you to care about him, you 're just watching the life of a resident of night city and will see how he act and survive , what is path will be in a world and city like that.
    or it's maybe just not a show for you, no big deal I guess :)

    Hope you guys keep doing the reactions. I personally think it is better in subs than dubs, but that is because I'm a fan of Studio Trigger and their previous work. Pretty sure both your view points will change very soon, this show is pretty interesting and was set up this way on purpose. Also, Netflix isn't getting rid of the binge method, at least not as of 2022.
