  • The director of the Getty Museum describes the work of James Ensor as “a landmark in Western art history”. Just for you, curator Mieke Mels is opening the doors of the Mu.ZEE, a museum in Ostend, the painter's hometown. Get to know this innovator of modern art and discover why he hid his ultimate masterpiece from the public for 30 years.
If interested, this episode has also been translated into International Sign for hearing-impaired art lovers.
In the next and final episode, we will visit Hof van Busleyden, an impressive Burgundian palace. You'll also have the honour of meeting the children's mayor of Mechelen!

    ━━ About VISITFLANDERS ━━━━━━━━
As a Flemish government agency that is strategy and knowledge-driven, VISITFLANDERS is committed to the sustainable development and promotion of Flanders as a top tourist destination. We don’t do this by ourselves. Together with our tourism partners, we work to allow Flanders to flourish as an innovative, high-quality travel destination and to inspire potential visitors to put the region at the top of their bucket lists. Our ultimate goal? Using tourism to help Flanders flourish as a destination! We do so both for our residents and entrepreneurs and for you, our visitors. We pay special attention to sustainability, accessibility and family-friendliness.
We focus on the intense experience of a place, a destination. This can involve meaningful encounters, specific activities or a sustainable travel formula. Instead of concentrating on a specific city or region, we develop broader Flemish narratives based on interdependent themes. Wherever possible, we combine these themes to further strengthen people’s experience. Welcome to Flanders!

What a wonderful artist Ensor was, with the way he used such a varied palette to express the light-dappled sky and sea. Lovely, informative tour. Thank you.

New artist for me as well. Thanks for the close-ups. I find that the knife "strokes" are an entirely different depth of art in themselves. Wow. Just wow.

what I like most in these episodes is to see the paitings very near, the camera almost touching the paintings. We can see the brush strokes in all their volume, sometimes the raw canvas. Excellent presentation . Ensor is one of my favourite painter, yet still underestimated. Please Keep showing us these wonderful artits. Greetings from Brasil .

Please give dates of birth/death of Ensor when you begin, and provide dates throughout. It's only at the last half that we get our first real date. Also, more on his personal life like did he marry, have children, die in Oostende?
