    I terribly love how you edited the flute changes in between, it definitely helps compare much more than what other youtubers do when comparing flutes. Mastermind editing.
    You made the flute sound like a thousand dollar flute, gotta be honest.

  • @Zoutsteen
    @Zoutsteen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

    Awesome how you weaved the two flutes together. That makes it so much easier to compare.
    it was very audible that you were compensating for the flute, both in your breath usage and end sound volume was, ehm, lacking, dimmed, soft-toned.

    the box that just says "FLUTE" on it (and nothing else) reminds me of the generic product boxes (white boxes and cans labeled "FOOD" and "BEER") from "Repo Man"

      I imagine a warehouse with identical looking cardboard brown boxes stacked to the roof, and a guy with an order sheet reading "F-L-U-T-E" and trying to find the box that matches the order, but accidentally pulling the box next to it. And some poor kid expecting a flute for his birthday get a box marked "TOILET BRUSH" instead.

    I didn't notice the first time i listened, however going back the second time, I did notice your professional flute does sound better, however to a non professional listener, I cant notice a huge difference, but you must have compensated a lot. when you play either flute, its really beautiful

  • @andyman58
    @andyman58 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Nice review! I play trumpet, and have seen some of this stuff. Obviously you could make any instrument sound great! But I found if you want a cheap instrument, you'd be better off buying a used student model. Might cost a little more, but at least it's got some quality control.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    What's the difference between a professional and an amateur flute?
    (There is none, I just like to tease classical musicians ;-))
    ADD: Okay, 64 is probably a little too cheap. Thing is, friend of mine is/was a saxophone player (not classical, but a very big jazz fan… he once dragged me (willingly!) to a Free Jazz concert. I loved it, the (sorry) improvisation ;-)) And he told me about how a beginner (with wind instruments specifically, but also in general) wants/needs a really good (thus really expensive) instrument, but can/wants to only spend a little bit of money (when they (or their parents) aren't yet sure they'll stick with it), while an expert can force almost any instrument into doing the job (your "I can compensate" comment) but can usually afford a really good/expensive one. Kinda like a beginner driver wants a really good (maybe even new) car because they have enough trouble with driving already, but can only afford a cheap used car, while an experienced driver can handle even a rustbucket (I drove one once, as a beginner, and it was such a rustbucket that my mom had trouble with it… and she had at least two decades of experience :D)

    Like most instruments, technique makes such a huge difference. As a very basic musician, if I play a high quality guitar (for instance) it really does make me sound better! But a very good guitarist friend of mine can make cheap guitars sound good. Very annoying! You have done the same here. What you have demonstrated is not the difference between flutes, but how good your blowing technique is!! :)

    I've watched a few "cheap review" on flutes, and this was a good review. Very honest, and well explained. As far as the sound (with your technique), at age 58 ears, i could hardly tell a difference. It did show a bit on "Green Sleeves". Again, your playing made up for it. It probably makes you grit your teeth, but is there a "cheap flute" you'd recommend?

  • @jeanmtiger
    @jeanmtiger ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I think if you do a blind test where you ask people to identify each flute would be interesting. I bet 90+% of people would not be able to tell the difference. I noticed differences in timbre but they were very slight. Would need good monitoring headphones to make it more obvious.

  • @roadboat9216
    @roadboat9216 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    First, GREAT editing. Really well done and a fantastic tool for comparing the instruments. And i’m sure that your technique had a good bit to do with making them so similar.
    For years I taught percussions/drums. My students (that could afford it) wanted to go out and buy huge and expensive drum sets. I would tell them that much more important than the instrument is the musician. I would show them a video of a drummer playing a set of tubs, pots, pans etc. and sounded fantastic! They got the point pretty quickly. Now here is a beginner to mediocre drummer playing a $7000 set of drums. Which sounds better. OH! The pots and pans!

    Having played for over 40 years I can say that price is largely immaterial. Take James Galway for example, he make all of them sound like a yard of old gas pipe. The man has the worst sounding technique I have ever encountered, whereas Hubert Laws and Jimmy Hastings sound amazing with modestly priced instruments. What do i play?, a simple Buffet Crampon. It's all about practice and technique and you can't put a price on those.

    • @CaseyVan
      @CaseyVan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think you are right, but this is a VERY cheap flute. One that cost 200 US dollars probably sounds pretty close to one that costs 2000 dollars. The variables are how long they last before they need maintenance, how good the action is etc. you probably could get an acceptable sounding flute for very cheap, but this flute is simply too cheap, and has design/manufacturing flaws. The same flute as the one shown but properly built, and designed might be an acceptable flute but could have the aforementioned problems of not lasting very long and requiring maintenance, not really having very good playability. I don't play flute, but the same goes for guitars. If you are a beginner, you still need a guitar with good playability, otherwise you could get discouraged. A good playable guitar these days is very cheap (if you buy a Chinese made instrument which is a no no). This is due to improved manufacturing technology (laser cutting, automation, carbon fiber etc.), I'm not sure if the same applies for flutes. I'm thinking of buying a flute, but I think I would do better buying a used flute for 200 dollars than to buy this one new.

    Well, whether you were compensating or not, that 64 Euro flute was pretty amazing. A beginner may well find it more difficult to get the low register and the upper register, however that flute doesn’t seem too bad a bit of kit to have as a travel instrument. Let’s face it, that is cheaper than having your own flute serviced!

    Hi helina, thanks for your good videos. I have a technical question that maybe you can help May figure out. For most of my flute playing I used a gemeinhardt open hole and I got so worn out that I bought a another and it seemed to play well and I had to all the necessary work done on it but the problem seems to be that after I am playing for about 10 minutes or 15 minutes who plays as if it's clogged or the sound it's not able to go through without resistance. I never had that problem with the other flute and I can't seem to see anyting in particular that is wrong with the instrument. I live in a warm climate year-round in Cancun Mexico so I didn't think it had to do with the temperature of the air but I'm stymied by the situation thank you

    • @jackmcgramm2259
      @jackmcgramm2259 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a lot of stuff that can go wrong even with a "just serviced" instrument, and its hard to diagnose anything sight unseen, but a few things to check:
      How is your cork? In a hot humid climate it might have shifted position or even molded from moisture. If you have the original cleaning rod, place it backwards (handle away from you) into the flute and there will be a groove that lines up in the center of your embouchure hole. You might need to adjust it slightly or replace it if it has shrunk and begun to leak
      Also, how are your pads doing? Are they closing properly? Imagine how much force you would use to stroke the wing of a butterfly - that is all the force you should need to close your keys to make the correct note, any more and you have a leak and need to go get an adjustment. And take it to someone who knows flutes, they are much more delicate than clarinets or saxophones. Bending keys to "adjust" them is a big no-no.

    • @wakancun
      @wakancun 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jackmcgramm2259, thanks for your reply...all of those are a check, the strange thing is when I first begin playing everything is fine, smooth and easy all the down to low b. Even starts well there. It's not a leak type problem..after about 15 minutes of playing it seems as if the airflow is somehow being restricted..if I stop and start up again it will be ok for a little bit..If I blow straight into the hole it's like blowing me into a clog..I tried cleaning cloth through and that helped a bit..I live in a hot humid climate but did not have the problem with my first Gemeinhart, I also took the head joint if my old one and put it on this one and is slightly better..it's really befuddling..

    You were able to make the purple thing sound good, that is a credit to your skill. However you looked like you were working hard to make the purple thing sound OK. When i played flute I had a Gemienhardt solid silver with open hole and low extension ( and this is not a really good flute , i know). I bought it as a first flute because even as a beginner i could tell the difference. Sadly i had to sell the flute to pay bills. But, I tried a lot of other flutes and it is just so difficult to get a cheap flute to sound good, i understand the talent you must have to make such a vile tent stake sound so good. the Chinese have given us many things we don't need that thing and the virus.

      I have been a band director for over 20 years so I have seen my fair share of beginner players and instruments. Take my advice as you wish but I beg you to avoid instruments like this! Although a cheap price on a brand new instrument may seem enticing, most of the time IT WILL NOT HOLD UP. Costs are cut somewhere to get the low prices. In my experience on cheap woodwinds the keys are so soft that they do not hold their shape for long. This means air leaks and that means a beginner will not be able to make the instrument work. It breaks my heart to see an excited 6th grader walk into my room with one of these instruments. My co-teacher and I do our very best for the kids but almost all of them end up leaving the program convinced they can't play. I have sat in many a practice room with kids so discouraged that they can't make their instrument play. And it isn't the kid. Your child will have a much greater chance at success if you hunt for a good used instrument from one of the name brands. I could go on and on about this topic because it is truly one of the most frustrating and heartbreaking parts of my job with beginner players.

    Love it when you buy a cheap product and it just says what it is on the side. Like "flute" or "guitar" or "smokes"...

    What would be the minimum amount that you would spend on a flute?

    i rather thought to thomann in germany that is more convenient to me!!!which type of flute???

      I have one beginner student playing this one from Thomann currently: www.thomann.de/intl/thomann_fls_querfloete.htm?partner_id=99590
      However, I don't have longer term experience with that one so I can't really say if it's a good one for longer time solution. You can definitely get started with it but you might have to upgrade sooner or later.
