As a therapist who's main hobby is reading, I really loved the section on anxiety, it's so very true what you say about going back to activities we loved as a child, and it's genuinely something I encourage my patients to do. I too read a mix of non fiction and fantasy and love getting cosy in autumn with a magical read. New subscriber here and really enjoying your content :)

Hello Jackie! I've read a lot of self-development books, money, philosophy, psychology. Basically what has to do with personal development and improvement and listening audiobooks while commuting. Recently started reading Star Wars books and comics. Have read Lord of the Rings and Hobbit when I was younger. I could not put those books down.
Also moved to Germany from the UK. I didn't know you started German. Maybe I missed that video. You are already at better level than I'm (only about B1) and I'm also doing Lingoda thanks to my company.😁

I bumped into your youtube channel yesterday whilst doing some career research. I think you're the closest person who's doing things i may want to do with a similar background and I was hoping i could pick your brain about where i could take my career.
I studied Aerospace engineering at University of Leeds and graduated in 2019. I struggled to get a job in the industry straight after university as most companies were asking for citizens, or people who could get a security clearance (I'm from Zimbabwe). I can only apply to get permanent residency next year and that would enable me to apply for jobs without needing visa sponsorship and can also get security clearance. The last 4 years I've worked for a software company that makes aerospace testing software. I worked as a digital marketing executive doing web development for 2 years and then moved to work as a software engineer for the last year. (I am more of a python developer now but i also have full stack web dev experience)
I was thinking if i should rechase the dream of going back into aerospace next year but some few things that are challenges:
    - I haven't practised aerospace engineering since university and it'll have been 5 years (will i still be competent )
    - i may have to apply for graduate jobs and that means a salary decrease from where i am now (just an assumption)
    - From my research, a career in software means earning more
    - It seems like every engineer i know, moves onto doing more management stuff and after 5-10 years, you won't be the fun technical things
In terms of forming a career in software:
    - i have no formal education in this, just a self taught coder who's learning on the job now
    - i feel my inadequacy especially at work when I speak to people with a CS background. They understand more about machine architecture and not just coding
I asked ChatGPT to review my CV and give me pointers and it suggested I pivot to doing aerospace software development. This involves embedded C, C++ and Ada. Low level languages I'm not very familiar with and hard to get good learning resources. Even codecademy only has basics of C and not the advanced stuff.
    Any pointers?
Looking forward to hearing from you (I've been binge watching your videos since last night)

Tangentially related, but any tips on someone who's currently in FP&A who's trying to break into data analytics/business intelligence?
I'm skilled in Excel and Power BI and know some SQL and just a bit of Python. I have a few portfolio projects built out.

    • @CSJackie
      @CSJackie  ปีที่แล้ว

      What is FP&A? :)
I would recommend something like the Codecademy data analyst career path (I started learning to code with their Fullstack engineer career path and it was quite helpful). Diving deeper into Python and learning some statistics and data manipulation using SQL, python pandas etc will definitely help a lot!

And thanks, I'll dive deeper into those suggestions. Sounds like all of that culminating into portfolio projects might be a good way to get your foot in the door.
