    Bogie is the og "OG." He is the quintessential Anti-Hero. You can't help but rout for and feel for him in these films.

    It’s crazy that people don’t seem to understand how great B&W looks with HDR and 4K. Those are typically my favorite 4K releases.

      4K helps with clarity but HDR/DV et al maximizes grayscale in B&W film. You are right about how great these films look.

    The 2 previous versions of the movie were actually included on the SE DVD which was part of the Bogart Signature Collection box set, but yeah, unfortunately left off the blu-ray release.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yep, you have to go back to the 2006 (17 years ago!) to the 3-disc DVD release to get the previous movie adaptations. This really would have been a great opportunity for Warner to bring those movies into the present.

      They sold the Thin Man sequels as separate Blu rays instead of one set like on DVD. I’m guessing if these films are released on BR they will be released individually. More $$$ for them I guess but sucks for us.

      The first version of FALCON is actually great, especially its precode vibe and Ricardo Cortez’s Roger Moore interpretation of Spade.

  • @ripmurdock6975
    @ripmurdock6975 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Oh yes. This is one I'm perfectly happy to triple/quadruple dip on. My favourite moment in the film, and what I think is an important moment in terms of what Bogart became and inspired, is when he's all up in Sydney Greenstreet's face in the hotel room, then walks out and the camera just lingers on Bogie pulling this ever-so-slightly malevolent grin... that's the moment he became, and perhaps even defined, the noir anti hero. Love it.

    • @CerealAtMidnight
      @CerealAtMidnight  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely! What I love about Bogey's performance (without spoiing the movie for those that haven't seen it) is how much Sam Spade is performing throughout the whole movie. In every frame of the film, he's playing on at least two levels. I don't think that's a part of the character in the Hammett novel, but it's an added layer on the screen.

    • @ripmurdock6975
      @ripmurdock6975 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I agree and that's a good take. I was inspired to watch it again last night and you're right, he's playing a different character to Lorre, Greenstreet, Elisha Cook Jnr and Mary Astor all the way through and keeps everyone on their toes (and the audience just in on it enough that they feel more connected to Spade) which as you say, is a lot more layered than the book. Guess that's one of the things that makes Bogart so endlessly watchable, those shades of grey. Appreciate the content man and the reply, you've built a great channel 👌

    Another great review. The Maltese Falcon is my favorite film noire and one of my top 10 films period. I actually read the book before I saw it. Love Hammetts work. His style. Fantastic adaptation.

    I'm 34 and can say that Humphrey Bogart is the Quint Essential Absolute Legend and what a movie star should be. Back in college I took theatre, and I wanted to study actors.. and I chose to study Bogart because in my mind, he was and always will be a juggernaut of an actor💯 I have collected majority of his films from his very first film petrified forest all the way to his last film the harder they fall... every film, he gave his all and then some💯💯 he has that Ora where you don't want to take your eyes away from his performance. It was that commanding💯💯💯

    I totally agree, that this is one of the movies that's get better every time you watch it. When I watched it 6-7 years ago, for the first time, my expectations where super high. Beacause, like you said, it's supposed to be one THE all time great american movies. I was disappointed and had no real experience with film noir. My last watch was a couple of months ago (probably my 3rd time) and suddenly it hit me! It's sooooo good. The dialoge is so sharp, witty and funny. I love it now and I'm excited for this disc to hit my door step. Thanks for the great review.

    So there may be debate in other films about what is or isn’t film noir, but this one is the paragon. If there are markers we expect in the form, this has them all: the lighting, the bleak worldview, the jaded protagonist who is also an investigator, a femme fatale, the fast-paced-witty dialogue, etc.

  • @mackjay1777
    @mackjay1777 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I must say I like your brief discussion of Film Noir, and I agree about the earlier adaptations -- I think they're well worth seeing and I find them enjoyable. They should be included complete, even if it would mean an extra disc. It's also great tp hear that the 4K transfer is impressive. I'm a Noir addict and have seen all the significant titles, many, many of the lesser ones. THE MALTESE FALCON is one of the very greatest--as you say, it's NOT the first one, but it sets a precedent and it has the quality that all my major favorites have: It's re-watchable, uncountable times over decades. There's enough mystery, uncanny character, visual style, great dialog and an unbeatable cast, to keep me going forever.

    I don't have a 4K player yet, but I missed out on the Blu-Ray when it came out over a decade ago, so I bought this set just for the Blu-Ray. The Maltese Falcon has now become one of my favorite films of all time.

    The perfect chance for me to re-evaluate this movie; I saw it about fifteen years ago or more and I thought it was good, but I am pretty sure I will appreciate it more this time around. I am hoping we get much more Bogart on 4K. Treasure of the Sierra Madre and The Big Sleep in particular; those made an impression on me.

  • @TheJacksonRoykirk

    I agree with you completely on documentaries. So many "documentaries" from 2010 forward are hardly that. They're too brief -- created for the short attention span audience. Plus, the creators are too far removed from the original films' actors, companies, and other talent. Docs from the 70s-90s were done well and done right. Yes, the film and video quality is low, but you're watching them for the information, not high-def detail of the patterns on the interviewees' clothing.

    I've felt very excited to be able to build up a HD collection of Bogart films let alone the possibility that we may start seeing more 4k UHD presentations of Bogart films! Quite exciting! Casablanca 4k was amazing so if Falcon is anything like that then it's going to be a new experience and from your review it sounds like that is exactly the case. I have that Lax Bogart biography, it's very very good. No Bogart fan shroud be without it. Flynn and Bogart are two of my favorite Hollywood screen actors ever so I hope we get more of their stuff in 4k. I'd love to see Robin Hood in 4k with HDR! Imagine how that would look!

    bogart in this movie, is terrific,
    he is a great actor in many of his movies
    casablanca and maltese falcon being in that list
    steve martin in the 80s did a similar film noir comedy
    in a style similar to bogart
    dead man dont wear plaid
    the funny thing about that film, Bogart appears in that film based on archival footage from three different movies: in a lonely place, the big sleep and dark passage
    so its interesting to compare that to How he has a great performance in the maltese falcon
    because in those other movies that get featured in dead men dont wear plaid, the characters bogart are playing in a lonely place, dark passage and the big sleep seem to have a similar hero quality to the detective character in the maltese falcon
    and you scartch your head going "how the heck can he go from one character to the next"
