Queria tanto trazê-la para Portugal - a filha dela provocava-me e dizia "És filha da minha Mãe", ou seja, éramos mais parecidas do que elas. Ela teria ficado absolutamente apaixonada por Lisboa e, apesar de ter usado uma bengala durante anos, teria descoberto lentamente o caminho por Alfama. Eu também queria levá-la a Fátima. Sei que ela queria fazer a peregrinação. Disse à filha dela, minha querida amiga, que quando ela viesse a Portugal iríamos a estes sítios e acenderíamos uma vela pela mãe dela em todas estas igrejas. One of the highlights of the 100th Anniversary celebrations of the Basilica - Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s in 1955 was a parade of four - five thousand Portuguese fishermen from the “White Fleet” who marched through the city of St. John’s on May 27, 1955. The fishermen walked in procession from the waterfront to the Basilica -Cathedral and presented a gift in the form of Our Lady of Fatima, comprising a group of nine statues, of poly chromed and gilt plaster. Patrick J. Skinner of St. John’s, by Reverend Father J. A. Rosa, chaplain of the Portuguese fleet, on behalf of the officers and crews of the fleet, and the people of Portugal. The grotto where the statues were placed is located under the west gallery in the Basilica Cathedral. Three other pieces of public art celebrate the presence of the Portuguese in Newfoundland and and Labrador. The statue of Gaspar Corte-Real Portuguese navigator - he reached Terra Nova (Newfoundland) in the 15th century. This statue was unveiled on May 1965 in front of Confederation Building in St. John’s. It was a gift from from the Portuguese Fisheries Organization as an expression of gratitude on behalf of the Portuguese Grand Banks fishermen for the friendly hospitality always extended to them by the people of Terra Nova. Another installation of public art to celebrate the history of the Portuguese in Newfoundland are the series of murals located on Duckworth Street. (near the site of the Sheraton Hotel) The murals depict scenes from towns in Portugal. The Portuguese fishermen is the unmarked grave of White Fleet Fisherman, Dionisio Esteves. He died during the 1966 fishing campaign while unloading his daily catch of codfish. He was crushed between his swamped dory and the steel hull of the fishing vessel. His grave site has come to symbolize all those Portuguese fishermen who lost their lives fishing in Newfoundland waters. The memorial is located in Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery, St. John’s. Miguel, you should do a documentary on the Portuguese fishermen from the White Fleet. Gil Eannes is a former Portuguese hospital ship, now permanently moored in the Port of Viana do Castelo, serving as museum ship and youth hostel. The ship visited St. John's on many occasions.

You must know that apart from Lisbon, Coimbra, Padua and Texas there is a small village in Slovekia, which is called Saint Anton (Svaty Anton). There is a nice palace in it. You can see more detailes on the Internet about it.
Thank you for the history on the saint. When I retired, my wife and I made San Antonio, Texas our home. It’s a nice city, but in terms of beauty it pales in comparison with Lisbon. That said, the city’s Cathedral bears the name “San Fernando” (which I did not know was the saint’s real name), and the building looks like a replica of Lisbon’s cathedral. Now I know why. San Antonio is the “Remember the Alamo!” city, so we get a lot of tourists, because a few steps from the Alamo is the “Paseo del Rio” (River Walk). I think you would enjoy our beautiful River Walk, so here it is. The attached video of a walk along the River Walk starts at the site of the old Pearl (beer) Brewery, which has been completely transformed and is now full of shops, restaurants, luxury apartment complexes, and the rustic, beautiful, and not-exactly-cheap-to-stay-at Emma Hotel, and it ends in the more touristy area of the River Walk. @@POVTours Yes. In San Antonio the majority speaks Spanish. In fact, the majority of the population comes from Mexican ancestry. As you know, Texas was once part of Mexico. And the most popular food in San Antonio is Tex-Mex, which differs from authentic Mexican food, but it's good.
@@POVTours It's hard to find good Mexican food anywhere in Europe. BTW, I recently saw a video of fado singer Carminho. She was in the central Mexican city of Guanajuato, in the state by the same name, attending the yearly "Festival Cervantino" (as in Don Quixote), and the video shows her and her musical group enjoying the local cuisine, but also Guanajuato, which is a beautiful place.

I visited Lisbon/Lisboa in 1991 as a stopover on my way to Fatima. As I was there for a Sunday I went to Mass in the Cathedral.
1991... Lisbon was a different city back then, not that many tourists 😊

Thank you very much Allan! 😊 Newfoundland, wow! There's a statue of a 15th century Portuguese explorer (Gaspar Corte-Real), located in the city of St. John's. His voyages are said to have been some of the first to reach Newfoundland and possibly other parts of eastern Canada.

One of the highlights of the 100th Anniversary celebrations of the Basilica - Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in St. John’s in 1955 was a parade of four - five thousand Portuguese fishermen from the “White Fleet” who marched through the city of St. John’s on May 27, 1955. The fishermen walked in procession from the waterfront to the Basilica -Cathedral and presented a gift in the form of Our Lady of Fatima, comprising a group of nine statues, of poly chromed and gilt plaster. Patrick J. Skinner of St. John’s, by Reverend Father J. A. Rosa, chaplain of the Portuguese fleet, on behalf of the officers and crews of the fleet, and the people of Portugal. The grotto where the statues were placed is located under the west gallery in the Basilica Cathedral. Three other pieces of public art celebrate the presence of the Portuguese in Newfoundland and and Labrador. The statue of Gaspar Corte-Real Portuguese navigator - he reached Terra Nova (Newfoundland) in the 15th century. This statue was unveiled on May 1965 in front of Confederation Building in St. John’s. It was a gift from from the Portuguese Fisheries Organization as an expression of gratitude on behalf of the Portuguese Grand Banks fishermen for the friendly hospitality always extended to them by the people of Terra Nova. Another installation of public art to celebrate the history of the Portuguese in Newfoundland are the series of murals located on Duckworth Street. (near the site of the Sheraton Hotel) The murals depict scenes from towns in Portugal. The Portuguese fishermen is the unmarked grave of White Fleet Fisherman, Dionisio Esteves. He died during the 1966 fishing campaign while unloading his daily catch of codfish. He was crushed between his swamped dory and the steel hull of the fishing vessel. His grave site has come to symbolize all those Portuguese fishermen who lost their lives fishing in Newfoundland waters. The memorial is located in Mount Carmel Roman Catholic Cemetery, St. John’s. Miguel, you should do a documentary on the Portuguese fishermen from the White Fleet. Gil Eannes is a former Portuguese hospital ship, now permanently moored in the Port of Viana do Castelo, serving as museum ship and youth hostel. The ship visited St. John's on many occasions.

You must know that apart from Lisbon, Coimbra, Padua and Texas there is a small village in Slovekia, which is called Saint Anton (Svaty Anton). There is a nice palace in it. You can see more detailes on the Internet about it.

Thank you for the history on the saint. When I retired, my wife and I made San Antonio, Texas our home. It’s a nice city, but in terms of beauty it pales in comparison with Lisbon. That said, the city’s Cathedral bears the name “San Fernando” (which I did not know was the saint’s real name), and the building looks like a replica of Lisbon’s cathedral. Now I know why. San Antonio is the “Remember the Alamo!” city, so we get a lot of tourists, because a few steps from the Alamo is the “Paseo del Rio” (River Walk). I think you would enjoy our beautiful River Walk, so here it is. The attached video of a walk along the River Walk starts at the site of the old Pearl (beer) Brewery, which has been completely transformed and is now full of shops, restaurants, luxury apartment complexes, and the rustic, beautiful, and not-exactly-cheap-to-stay-at Emma Hotel, and it ends in the more touristy area of the River Walk. @@POVTours Yes. In San Antonio the majority speaks Spanish. In fact, the majority of the population comes from Mexican ancestry. As you know, Texas was once part of Mexico. And the most popular food in San Antonio is Tex-Mex, which differs from authentic Mexican food, but it's good.

@@POVTours It's hard to find good Mexican food anywhere in Europe. BTW, I recently saw a video of fado singer Carminho. She was in the central Mexican city of Guanajuato, in the state by the same name, attending the yearly "Festival Cervantino" (as in Don Quixote), and the video shows her and her musical group enjoying the local cuisine, but also Guanajuato, which is a beautiful place.
