This hymn was taken from the World Wide Church of God hymnal.
These Hymns were originally made under the direction of Mr. Herbert W. Armstrong.

I live in a little town called Horbury in the North of England where the hymn was written in 1864 by Rev.Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924)for the school at Horbury Bridge where he was Curate.

I :played this for the funeral of a 90- year-old lady today. IT was such a rare opportunity to play it , so I had all organ stops blazing and plenty of boomy pedals! What fun I had! - so did the congregation!

Ted Dexter wrote an inspirational hymn called "Onward Gower Soldiers" to the tune of "Onwards Christian Soldiers" which those playing in a Second Ashes cricket test sang as prelude music.
That is the reason I just listen to it .I was cleaning house and it poped into my head I had not heard it for several years . Thank you God for working in my. Life . All glory to you Amen

I was chatting about the state of the crazy world post Covid, and this old song from my Sunday School days came into my head, so I have searched it. I haven't heard it since I was small...Brilliant!! Amen..never give up on the fight for GOOD.

I heard it for the first time in chapel in first grade. I asked my mother when I got home from school if she knew it and she did of course. I walked around singing it all day. At my mother's funeral. I was a zombie unable to digest what was happening n all of a sudden the choir began to sing this hymm. She had pre-arranged for this hymn to be sung at her funeral. It brought a smile to my tear stained face during such a difficult day. ❤
This is a timeless classic. I'm memorizing it for the strength it gives me at my workplace.

This is a wonderful song. As a young child I was always so proud to sing this song in school assembly, Sunday School and Church. Gosh this song takes me back many years. We are the soldiers today, standing and leading in faith and fellowship carrying his banner with love and unity to all corners of the earth. Bringing peace and togetherness. Jesus, our defender and Commander. All praises and honor to our almighty God. El Shaddai.

Thank you for posting. All of my youthful years this song was sang in church. In some church services, it is still a part of ministry. It has the most profound words, resonating differently in my mind, now that I am growing spiritually. The rebellion against the obedient behaviors, God has requested of us, is so clear for me now, especially here in 2021, 2022.

Heart warming. Different words to what we sang at school. Cross of Jesus, not word. It's a rousing battle song about the Crusaders marching under the cross to beat the Barbarians and win back Jerusalem. Happy days. Look at the Middle East now.

The composer of this hymn, Arthur Sullivan, wrote a lot of other music, mostly secular light opera. Gilbert & Sullivan is really enjoyable for anyone who appreciates good music and good humor.
