"The Legend," Mark Gonzales Finds Perfect Balance in Fine Art and Skateboarding | HYPEBEAST Diaries

- HYPEBEAST meets up with artist Mark Gonzales in his Lower East Side studio. The Supreme team member still skates, but has mellowed from his raucous early years. “I think at 50, I think I reached the type of maturity where my art is fine art,” he chuckles. “Where before it was just kid stuff.”
“Maybe inside the skateboard world I’m someway on the outside,” Gonzales reflects. “I’m a different way.” As he manuals through Chinatown and shows us the knick-knacks inside his studio space, he meditates on the contrast between his physical approach to skateboarding and emotional take on artwork. “I’m not afraid to … break a bone or … lose my teeth,” Gonzales affirms. “But… I like soft colors, I like pink, I like a lot of things that aren’t really ‘tough.’”
Inside the space, the Gonz maneuvers around half-finished canvases, Funko Pop figurines, old skate magazines and retro Makaha boards to get to his window-side workspace. “Mostly you can see it’s pretty messy, that’s the way I work.” he admits “Sometimes it’s hard for ideas to formulate with a clean environment.” As he paints, Gonzales considers how his work attitude has shifted “It’s kinda weird to not have a reason but just to be following an instinct. In my opinion, thats what makes good art.”

This is probably my favorite Mark interview to date - love the line about not having a “reason” to do something but following an instinct...

Skateboarding and art really go hand in hand. So much style in both fields. Just as you see a Silhouette of someone skating and recognize who it is, you recognize a piece of art in the same way. Watching this, I felt so comfortable. He’s the essence of what og skateboarders are, ngaf.

I feel like Mark is the coolest guy. He is totally without ego. He could be walking around in underwear and still look cool doing it. He knows himself and what he loves. And from what I gather, he loves people, art, and skateboarding, and pursues those loves with passion.

Mark has been an inspiring figure for me since I discovered skateboarding back’n the 90’s. I never was most skilled on a board but know I had the most fun on and off it.

People are talking a lot about where skateboarding is at, what's wrong with it, what's good, and what needs to change. All we really need to do is look at Gonz, then everything becomes clear as day.
The problem with skateboarding is it stuck it hasn't progressed any. You have to look at it Rodney Mullen is single-handedly responsible for skateboarding as we know it today. Heather not been Rodney Mullen Gonz wouldn't exist. Virtually every single skateboarding trick that we know today was invented by Mullen or he had his hand in it. If you look at modern skateboarding design that is completely one-hundred-percent Rodney Mullen's doing. Outside of the Supertramp where is skateboarding actually grown? And what I mean by that is if you look at the skating from the mid-90s early 2000s nothing's really happened in a major sense. Skateboarding is just stuck in the era of 1990 - 2000. If you're honest with yourself you can openly see this and admit it. All the major tricks that we know in Street where invented and perfected in the Years between 1977- 2000, in vert invert the 900 was landed in 99 by Hawk (super ramp does not count super ramp because that's just a bunch of BS in my opinion, if you can't do it on a halfpipe you can't do it). the reason I say that about super ramp is because all you have to do is build a caller rant once you do this you get more speed which means you get more air which means you get more Hang Time on a halfpipe you don't have this luxury. If you look at it snowboarding BMX hell even rollerblading and even the dreaded scooter has progressed more then skateboarding has in less time. Now don't get me wrong I love skateboarding I'm 47 years old now spend the majority of my time on a longboard or a nice pentail. But skating is nowhere what it was in the 80s and 90s.
