      They were selected by Chinese government. They were trained since they were very young . They practice everyday. That’s why !

    This is Chen Sitan. He is known as the prince of Taichi. Anyone who gets to be any better than him is a very lucky person. This performance that you see was not about luck. He concentrated all his life to this. If you can do that...maybe you will one day move like him.

      The vast majority of us who learn Tai Chi as adults when our bodies are already quite stiff will never be able to perform it like Chen Sitan, Wu Amin, Zong Weijie, etc. These people started learning and training from as young as 5 or 6 years old.
      I learned Tai Chi late in life, and while I know fully well how all the movements should be done, and I can even spot it when it is done wrong by someone else, I am unable to do it right myself because my body is no longer young and nimble, and my legs are not as strong as before. It's well nigh impossible for me to do what someone like Chen Sitan can do. So, for eg, I know how a Snake Creeps Down should be done, and I wish I could do it, but I can't. I have to modify it with a higher stance to suit my body condition. Then, the kicks. My hamstrings just can't make it and so, I can't kick to nose level.
      However, I understand that there is a constant stream of kids as young as 5 or 6 years old who are being trained all the time. There will come more and more practitioners who can perform very well in all the styles (Chen, Yang, Sun, Wu...) Every generation will have its champions.

      I know the 24 form routine and was doing it, in my small way, outdoors when a neighbor child asked me if I was stretching. That may be a good way to express the whole doctrine. Or as a warm-up. You get to know your body by stretching it a bit--ahh, that feels good, and I didn't know I could do that.

    This is an excellent performance of Tai-Chi. He kooks like butterfly moving in slow motion and the clothes help the movements look as though his is floating. Lovely!!!

    Some people might think 24 movement is the most simpliest form, but if one can achieve this perfection, it will set the fundation of other forms. I love all the details in the foot-work and eye-gazing. He can probably do better, but this vidoe lets me know how far away I am still.

  • @ditgodin

    this guy is chen sitan. He is the prince of Taichi competition forms such as 24 and 42 etc. If you guys are so negative about this spectacular performance, show us want you do here and let us judge you. You have your foot in your mouth. If you want application go for the Traditional forms and probably Sanshou. Then you can argue away on what was usable and what was just showmanship. We all have opinions to respect.

    As far as the way he bends his knees, I've read about a Taiji master (I think it was one of the recent ones, but I don't remember his name off the top of my head) who could bend his knees like that just fine, but when his students did it that way, some of them ended up with knee trouble. For all I know, the guy in the video may be able to do it just fine without worrying about knee trouble.

    As far as the martial arts vs. sports taiji argument, it think in this day and age it does depend on your motivations for learning taiji. That said, I don't ever plan to use taiji for fighting if I can help it, but I do think that it's still very useful to know the martial arts applications, because that knowledge helps you get the most out of your practice. So, basically, I think it's good to be holistic in your study of taiji, no matter your goals for your practice.

  • @FinalEclipse06
    @FinalEclipse06 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I haven't been practicing Taiji for very long (less than a year), so I'm not sure if the whole "knee over the foot" thing is as bad as it's made out to be. Although, the supporting arguments about the bubbling wells cavity and rooting in the feet do make a lot of sense (I know a little bit about Qigong; just getting started with it).

    Absolutely beautiful, flowing movements!! I wasn't aware that the24 forms could be executed in such a way. I'm a newbie (3wks) in Tai chi and although I've seen some other students flow thru the movements like swans, I'd never imagine it could be like this. Beautiful, that's all I can say. Can't comment on technical moves , etc. as I don't feel qualified.

    The good part of "NEW Taichi" is get more attention and set-up for competition. So, for young ones are ok to start with "NEW Taichi". While traditional Taichi is something what you can do for the rest of your life. 活到老學到老 A suggestion for those who practice the " New Taichi" : Better watch out to hove your knees point the same direction as your toes. 膝蓋對腳尖 That is important to avoid knee injury, and is the basic to integrate the strength from your feet. 下盤整勁。

    You are absolutely wrong if you believe Taiji is not used for fighting. It is an absolute myth that Taiji is only meditation or to look pretty. These moves have specific applications, hence why each move has a specific name. Two great examples are: 'Play the lute," which is really a Chi Na move to break someones elbow, and "Needle and Sea Bottom" which is literally pushing someone's intestines into his pelvis.

    As for the knee, FYI, Song Ji-jen, 宋志堅 founder of Yijen 易簡 Taichi in Taiwan. Mr. Song claim his Taichi inspired by Chen Meng-chi, CMC,鄭曼青, but he is only one in the traditional Taichi field, ask students to have knees go over toes. Though Yijen Taichi is popular in Taiwan. Taichi practitioners, including CMC's students, do object the method he taught. As for the "knee" part is regarded as a joke.

    Answering your question to manhuazhenren, this guy is okay for the showy style of taiji, but his form is divorced from the martial nature of the art. He's strong in the legs, stays low throughout and doesn't bob his head up and down much, but it doesn't look like he's thinking about fighting applications.
    For example, if you look at the single whip low form, that's supposed to be a defense against a kick with a leg sweep and a push at the end. His pushes and punches lack power too.

  • @DopoNotte
    @DopoNotte 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @garyslinn
    Yes, his knee is a major complaint of mine as well. It definitely moves far beyond the bubbling well. This can be seen clearly in 'Grasp Sparrows Tail." Second, he is constantly bouncing up and down like waves in an ocean. He is not keeping an even head / body level throughout the form. This can be clearly seen in his "Wave Hands like Clouds."
    But his single leg kicks are the best I've ever seen.

    @pribadi8406 It is all very well to say be careful, and that he was taught this way of doing it. For all I know he has executed some method of performing it to absolute perfection. I question that method of execution. Are you saying that 1) his knee does not extend so that the knee cap/joint goes beyond his toes ? 2) that he does not lean forward in some postures ? 3) that he does not rise/fall on many steps ? I question these, not his execution. I believed these to be wrong in Yang style canon

  • @garyslinn
    @garyslinn 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    does not his knee go too far forward on the "bow" stances? Also, forward lean on same stances (which is a form but did not think it was 'correct' for these moves) ? Also, quite noticeable rise/drop on stepping ...

  • @servanties1234567
    @servanties1234567 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, let's not discuss the real Tai chi. The philosophy of Tai Chi is self learning martial art, my coach used to tell me this. You're not competing with others, you compete with yourself.
    Even while you're sparing, you learn through your partner, still, you compete with yourself and improve everyday. So, don't judge others, because Tai Chi is self-improving martial art, though we tend to practice it for health.

  • @taijilou
    @taijilou 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You assume too much, I think. I see good posture, good rooting, and there's nothing here indicating that he would not understand the applications to the form. What are your qualifications to assert such judgement?

Good for you, one day I'll be able to sum up a fighter's experience with as concise an assessment as yourself.

    Yep, the different learning movitation will lead to learn different Taichi style. That is the idea to differentiate "Sport Taichi" from those traditional Taichi. It is fair to say : Not to criticize the new Taichi by the traditional standards, such as knee/toe/injury/implication/ application stuffs. So, it is legitimate to say the traditional Taichi with abundant implication / application/ restriction is very different from the "New Taichi".

    As I can observe, the chi flow is not long and contiuous either. The chi flows from the dantien, moves to the finger tips, the upper head and the bubble wells on the feet, free movements essentially break the chi flow. His movements are also too rapid. Taichi represents two ideas :"all in one" and "one in all". I do not see how he can defend or attack, though it is pretty smooth. To train my chi, I have trained dive swimming of 25 to 50 meters underwater with no breathing.

    This could be a perfect 24 forms Taichi demo, but too much away from the traditional Taichi. The critical differences, in my opinion between traditional and the "NEW" Taichi(Gymnastic) are 1. The real Taichi can fight(self-defense).非花拳繡腿 2. The real Taichi allow your capability (kung-fu) to grow through despite of your age. 愈老彌堅 .

  • @taichi1770
    @taichi1770 12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The guy in the clip is totally not following one of the most important principle "root in the feet, issue from the leg, control by his waist and manifest in his hands." He hands are actually leading his whole body, and his feet are wobbling from side to side. If he keeps doing it this way, he may have busted knees before he gets old. Try to find out about this guy before you say anything about taiji.

    hay, Finaleclipse06, you definitely have no idea of what you are talking about regarding martial arts. There is no such thing as sports taiji whether it is old or new. Taiji is based on a set of principles which combine martial skills with the understanding of body mechanics and movements for self defense. You can be holistic all you want, if
    you are doing the form without following the principles, you may as well go do ballroom dance and get the exercise you want

  • @DopoNotte
    @DopoNotte 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @pribadi8406 Nevermind that most importantly in Taiji is the root, being rooted properly over the bubbling well. Why? So that you can not be uprooted and thrown to the ground, b/c again Taiji is a combat art. Wu style first teaches the Dragon Walk, and typically it takes 1-2 years to learn the first move - how to move without unrooting yourself. This is b/c, again, it is for combat purposes.
    Finally, your attributing Tae-kwan-do to Taiji is truly insulting.
