    One small thing that made me look at the hero of time in a whole other light was the hug he got from cremia. ‘You feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Sigh…you could get used to this.’ I love how much this humanised link as he grew up an orphan and the closest thing he had to a parental figure was a tree that died in front of him. This was his first time experiencing motherly affection and it’s so bittersweet.

    • @masterofbloopers
      @masterofbloopers ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I interpreted it as something much less wholesome. Now that Link is more mature, he started to develop an interest in women, so he enjoyed getting a face full of cleavage. Honestly, the developers' intentions could go either way given how often adult innuendo sneaks its way into "family-friendly" games.

      @@masterofbloopers I think it’s very unlikely those were the developers intentions. He’s a 10 year old who never really had a family, development like this is pretty par for the course in a lot of cases. Also the term ‘warm and fuzzy’ doesn’t really come across as anything sexually suggestive. I’ve always heard that expression used to describe feelings of nostalgia, familiarity or comfort.

    I gotta be honest, that 4th day glitch is absolutely disturbing. It feels like a perverse, broken reality where the moon did actually fall and wiped society out and shattered reality itself. I struggle to put it into words. It is just...wrong. Even for a glitch.

    • @LilacMonarch
      @LilacMonarch ปีที่แล้ว +85

      The glitch makes sense when you know how the game works; it was originally intended to be a full 7 days long and this glitch is an artifact of that. The moon is extremely far away, presumably where it would have been on the original first day and left in the code as there was no real reason to remove it. But all the characters operate on strict schedules that determine where they are and what they're doing, so loading up an empty day makes an empty world.
      Even knowing all that though, it still feels creepy. It's not just a beta level bare of anything beyond the terrain, this puts you in fully fleshed out locations that are simply robbed of their life.

      it feels like walking down school halls at night. a place supposed to be full of people and dynamic, now empty. the set of a play when it is closed. just props scattered where they shouldn't be, no actors to poppulate the stage.
      An unintentional liminal space
      add to it the shock of having your eyes flashed open after taking your last breath, and you have a true limbo in videogame form.

      Honestly, I'd argue it is THE most tragic story about an individual in all of gaming. There are plenty of games out there about mass violence and loss of life and atrocities and so on,
      but this iteration of Link... there's just something so fundamentally heartbreaking about the corruption of a child's innocence and its replacement by jaded adult cynicism due to trauma and forced maturity... It just hits too close to home for too many people, I think.

    You know what I love about old school Nintendo? Characters like Grog. He’s a character outcasted from his family who hates his mother and father. A family with a bitter history between each other. It hits pretty close to reality. And I’m the end the hero can’t help Grog, and he meets a dark fate.
    Stand out characters like these make the world feel real to me. There’s a story here of a mundane broken family that will never be told directly to the player. And it’s sad we’ll probably never get characters like this ever again.

    Romani is still one of the most fucked up characters in video game history. A 9-year-old child whose mind gets melted by alien abduction. Even if you manage to save her from said abduction, she still has to live through the apocalypse. But no worries, her older sister chooses to let her get drunk for the first time in her life so her senses are dulled and she doesn't have to experience the full terror of the moon crashing into the earth. The Hero's Shade and how he interacts with his descendent, how he talks of "regrets", it fits perfectly with Majora's Mask. The Hero himself becomes a restless spirit, and the hero from TP has to help him find peace.

    Ocarina & Majora are phenomenal games, but man if Romani & Cremia’s dynamic isn’t just the most heartbreaking thing. You’ve got 2 sisters in their own after the deaths of both their parents, with Cremia doing her best to make ends meet. Just like Link in Ocarina, she has to force herself to mature quicker to take on all the responsibilities of Romani Ranch. The context of the Chateau Romani beverage and letting Romani drink it is so dark.
    Anyone with a younger sibling knows how frustrating it can be to worry about your siblings at times. You’ll bicker with them, and some times you want nothing to do with them, but you still want the best for them. Cremia’s frustration with Romani-especially prior to “them” coming down to the ranch and kidnapping her-is pretty realistic; the uptight elder sibling who had to mature quicker than they’d have liked to, just out of the desire to protect the younger sibling. There’s the aspect of her saying “when you’re older,” denying giving the younger sibling what they want just for their safety that really makes Cremia feel more realistic. When I first played Majora’s Mask and saw the sisters in the bar after learning about the alcoholic properties of the milk, it made me tear up a bit understanding why Cremia let Romania have the drink.
    As stated in the video, in the final hours of a 3 day cycle in the game, we see how all the characters process their impending demise, and whether or not they can accept death and how they even will. Cremia letting her sister drink the Chateau Romani in the hopes that it’ll dull her senses enough or cause her to pass out JUST so she won’t be aware of the world’s end is bittersweet. By that point, she’s resigned herself to that fate, but even in the end she wants to keep her sister naive to their fate. It’d be a mercy if she had her sister drink her fill just so she dies in her sleep from alcohol poisoning, before they’re engulfed by the inferno from the Moon’s descent and the world’s collapse. The writing of Majora’s Mask is just fascinating to me!

The large open areas really added a sense of loneliness that made me scared some sort of monster would come out. In Hyrule Field at night there are the huge Peahats and Stalfos at night!
    Lake Hylia with its deep open water always scared me that some sort of huge fish would eat me. Thankfully that didn't happen, but in Majora's Mask my fears were answered with the dark water, Like-Likes, Skeleton fish and those huge Sea Snakes!
    The Haunted wasteland in Ocarina of time was frightening with the sandstorm obscuring everything, like Subnautica on land! And the Twinmold boss fight was like that nightmare fully realized!

    While the standard rules of time travel would mean that nothing done in a previous loop would count as having happened, there's something weird about Majora's Mask's time travel - for example, while you apparently do need to rescue each of the four giants by completing their respective temples, and the four regions remain blighted until and unless you refight the temple's boss in the current loop, you can still summon all the giants you've ever rescued, regardless of which loop they were rescued in.
    And then the ending includes little epilogues showing the happy endings for the various quests that you completed to get masks, but not the ones you didn't get the corresponding masks for, and they appear regardless of which loop you got their mask in.
    This means that some things carry over from other loops, and that the post-victory timeline isn't simply the continuation of the final loop, but some sort of hybrid of multiple loops. It also suggests that you can't conclude that anyone actually died in any loop where Link hid under a bed somewhere and did nothing - whatever's happening is more confusing than simply jumping to a different timeline each time.

    Besides the fact that Majora's Mask is the most nightmare fueled game for any kid or perhaps any adult willing to get scared by it has to be a testament to how Nintendo is a master of horror and dread where it comes. I honestly thought that Wind Waker and Ocarina was dark alone with Wind Waker having the Mega Man Legends hellish water landscape to where everything has regressed and everyone is just forced to live with it while a darkness consumes the land and Ocarina for the sole fact that Ganondorf is going to stop at nothing even if it means polluting and consuming the land, committing mass genocide for all races of the land of Hyrule and corrupting its people and kidnap a royal to the family he swore allegiance to all for the sole purpose of becoming a god was truly terrifying enough for me alone. Majora's Mask ups that by infinity with the factor of Link (now gone through Ocarina) as a child who has to suffer through an endless 3 day repeating cycle while everyone is suffering because of this curse. Now after watching this video and having a full grasp on Majora's Mask, i can safely say that Majora alone is one of the biggest nightmare fuels i have ever experienced and has to be one of the greatest and most dark and impactful villains from a video game i have ever seen.
    Besides Dark Link giving me the most nightmares because his soulless body/model and red dot eyes along with darkened voice is what kept me up a lot of times as a kid surprisingly.
