Wandering if Komatsu dozer is the equivalent to Toyota in cars? The motor sounds so smooth with minimal smoke and I don’t hear any squeaking or squealing from the running gear. It all spells the highest of quality. If I needed to own a dozer it would be Komatsu and all my cars have been Toyota.

Rock is interesting some areas can be ripped while there are other areas that need to be loosened with explosives. The way blasting is done nowdays it is to fracture the rock enough to be processed. Where the dust was coming off the tip that is solid rock and need to be lossened with explosives.The nature of rock is usually the upper part can be loosened with a ripper, but the deeper you go the more solid it is. Earthmovers rate rock in seismic velocity. The higher the velocity the harder the rock. I have seen a picture of a rock cut on a highway job in Ca. and one area of the cut they are using scrapers to haul the material and 20ft away there are rock drills drilling on a solid knob of rock
Needs to use the variable pitch on the rippers more once its in the ground and get it pulled in to a better angle as well as lifting the backend way off the ground doesn't give it more down pressure it just reduces the traction because there is less track on the ground.

ive seen some of them operators do that lifting it way up to see if it drops down once they plow over a break in the rock but that looked like he was maybe just showing the camera how high it would lift because thats not really the best way to rip
Brutal. You need to add a jack hammering function to the ripper claw. Done and done.
Its been done. It was called an impact ripper, didn't catch on because of the wear and tear on the machine.

what are the 5 chunky blocks on the bottom of the track for? I've never seen thoseon a machine before

They are rock guards. They get wore out to and need built up or replaced. That under carriage is newer. That is why you don't hear the tracks squealing. The tracks have pins and bushings. There is s rubber stopper in each pin. You can oil the tracks there to keep pins and bushing from wearing out. Saves alot of money. Just re grouser your pads when worn.
Years ago them old CATs had reverse fans blades could get heat from motor.

I sure know about the reversible fan ,and the cat I was operating had a switch and could control it from the seat . And made it so nice having a hydraulic fan, so when it gets clogged up , turn the switch and now the fan is a pushing one,and away goes all that dust and grass, and just a out anything else that can get sucked Into the fan and plug it up. But the next dozer the company bought, no hydraulic reversing fan, hit had a reversing fan, but the type I had to get out of the seat, and reached in the fan shroud, then taking each blade, and pushing them in , and with a twist, the blade will be either a pusher or sucker fan. And yesss , shut off the engine before working in the engine bay. But when the blade is turned to where it will be sucking the heat out of the radiator and engine , and get a very very nice and warm operator area. And when my grandfather worked on the Alaska pipeline , he brought back a brand new operator blanket, and gave it to me, with being so thankfully as my grandfather still had the one he used operating a double 9 or d-9, and showed me how to use it with ducts in it to place over or around which let that high velocity fan. What a life saver that co er around blanket, so kept me warm. The funny thing is, when the weather starts to change and getting warmer in the afternoon, then had to take off the blanket type thing ( I forgot the real name for it ) and then a little latter when it warmed up some more, turn the fan blades to push.
Probably a daft question, but what is so complicated to put the blade down and push soil? Not trying to offend, is there something more to it? Like knowing the depth or angle that you’re supposed to clear off?
Like most things in life everything looks easy until you have to do it. Like most any task short of simple, there is much knowledge and skills and trick and tips one must learn and accumulate to truely make something look simple and easy and in many cases mindless and effortless. Running that machine my friend is no simple feat. A truly skilled person will make their craft look so simple and that's truely one of the most beautiful parts of mastering anything in this world. That goes for welding or painting artwork or machining or equipment operating or cooking or flying or anything more then simple for that matter. It's the sheer tenacity that true masters of their craft have to pour there heart and soul and every ounce of effort into mastering their craft and that is a very large part of why humans so adaptable and able to overcome most any challenge.

hmm i am still wonder what exactly causing that white steam from ripper , is it from pressure and high temps on rock or is it just dust from crushed rocks ?
baca zterchovej It’s from the friction generated from the weight of 115 tonnes of dozer trailing the small point of the ripper over hard rock. It’s a mix of dust and smoke from friction I think.
Ripper tips can get that hot you cant touch them with your hand, its not steam as such but fine dust created from the friction of the tip sliding over hard rock.
Is a Komatsu 475 equivalent to a D11 ?
They are pretty much the same size. It can depend on what specification they have as well which can make weight vary a lot.

I have almost wore out a ripper tooth in one day. One thing i know also is you should not try and turn with the ripper buried. But on these bigger machinces the same stands with pushing. Turn with corner bit. But never with frictions when pushing full load. I see one track spinning and one warning. Next time park it. Two tracks spinning alot won't happen. Do more ripping or you are not running my dozer. Tha5 os some mean ripping.

Man she is ust awesome to watch. Beautiful how the roller boogies are working in the ruff terrain. Just one thing - the operator does not tilt the ripper in, which can result in excessive shank tip wear. Or he just do not want to for a reason I'm not seeing.
Two questions: Which material is ripped? And what are the green and amber beacons for?

The material is a very hard compacted Silica Sand that even a D11R couldn't handle. The green beacon indicates that the operator is wearing his seatbelt and the orange beacon is just a general warning beacon that the bulldozer is in operation.

In this sort of material, what sort of lifespan can be expected for the shank ?
Stan Patterson the tip needs changed twice a week but they are testing out different tips to see if they can get longer periods between changes.
In some material the tip life can be a few hours, not days.

May im wrong,but it waste fuel,and wear on the dozer,we drilling holes,filling explosion into the hole,press the button,and make loose around 40-45 000 tons of rock,abaut cost 0.6€/tons.
Why play on the solid rock with the dozer,no result.
May he make 300tons of rock all day.
J Cs I’m sure they did their sums before buying the dozer as opposed to blasting. What I did notice when I was there is that the silica sand they were mining or quarrying for was mixed with pockets of other materials. If it were to be blaster then the Silica sand would be contaminated. Another reason not to blast is that blasting would leave large lumps of silica sand as opposed to the dozer ripping it out fine, needing no secondary processing.

@@rogerwoodland2587 The way that guy on the video ripping is just unacceptable.
First he needs to adjust dozer tooth lower so that the frame of ripper would be parallel to the floor wherever he is able to penetrate material.
Somewhere it's comparatively soft material and he's going too deep due to incorrect tooth positioning and that's increasing the fuel consumption and wearing of UC, decreasing performance at that same time.
Another point is that kind of hard material should be drilled&blasted, not ripped. And he's just killing that machine and wasting owner's money.
