Autumn in France| A Road Trip:Basilique Notre Dame 'd Avioth
You've possibly not heard of Avioth. I hadn't.
Initially a simple hamlet, the village of Avioth owes its development to the miraculous discovery of a wooden statue of the Virgin and Child in the 12th century . A pilgrimage quickly developed there, and the ecclesiastical and feudal authorities quickly supported the construction of a church worthy of this pilgrimage: the great church of Avioth was born!
What a 'grand old lady' this Basilique is. There is work to be done and also being done. And with much love and respect. We weren't sure what we would find and I'm pleased to note we weren't disappointed. We are staying in Matton-et-Clémency. While here we chose some of the more popular, better known places to visit and discover for ourselves their beauty. Old, gracious, stunning. All those words fit the bill.
Enjoy the video and I hope you leave a comment at the end. Thanks for watching.

Hello Anita! It was amazing seeing the basilica. The stonework is so impressive and I agree, I think about the numbers of people that have passed through when I see old worn steps like that. The photos are pretty amazing, too. Have a great day!

That was a super looking church. It's surprising tat Avioth today hasn't grown into a large town. Great location
Yes Alice I was also surprised at the size of this small community. Loved it though- and not commercialised in any way or form. That in itself was beautiful. Thanks for the comment and support. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝

It's good to see this church being preserved for future generations, Anita.
Thanks Andy- I totally agree. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
What a beautiful basilica! It’s amazing to see how they’re working hard to restore it. This place has such an incredible history. This restoration is truly a labor of love. It’s wonderful to see how much care is going into preserving such a historically significant place. places like this really make you appreciate history and faith. You’ve captured the essence of this basilica so beautifully, even with the renovation work happening. Wow, those ancient steps leading to the pulpit are just incredible-so much history in every step!
Good Monday morning. What a lovely comment to wake up to. It was almost an honour to walk here. I am continually astounded at the workmanship from yesteryear. While walking the isles one can almost hear the congregation whispering and walking down the isles. I’ve made a mental note to revisit in two to three years time. It’s not that far from where I live. Thank for the support and kind words. Enjoy your week. 🙏🇳🇱🙋♀️🥝

Anita, this is amazing! The age and history are astonishing! The wood being used was cut in 1095 AD! It's great that you could go in and film even though it's being restored! There was so much detail within the interior. What a beautiful look around! I loved this 😊
Thank you NNP. I’m keen to revisit in a couple of years. Even now though it was so impressive to walk around gazing up so high and those massive pillars were incredible. Thanks for the lovely comment. So pleased you enjoyed the video. Have a lovely Friday. 🙏🇳🇱🙋♀️🥝
This is a wonderful presentation, Anita. The audio quality is excellent too! It's so incredible the fine way they used to create buildings long ago. 🤩🤩
Hi Holly, thanks for the comment and compliment. It is indeed miraculous how these large structures were built in such primitive times. Enjoy your Sunday. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝

Hi Julie and Tony. Thanks for the lovely comment. Always love hearing from you both. I can only say this was quite an experience. The age and size of this basilica was awesome. Once again, Anita, great narration with information overlaid with some fantastic footage of amazing architecture. Your passport must have a lot of stamps on it.😅
Louise, thank you so much. I feel flattered. The basilica was truly amazing. It's story so special. Haha, we don't have to be stamped anymore - just keep driving windy roads crossing borders all day long. Thanks Louise, loved your comment. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
Morning Anita
Hope you are well.
What a stunning building
Beautifully narrated
Sorry we are just watching. We have been away and are catching up on everyone's recent uploads over the next few weeks 😊

Good Sunday morning. I had a giggle, I too am catching up...on comments. I've been busy and people have commented and I haven't responded. Love hearing from you and glad to her you are well ( as I am thanks). Oh we had such a great time here and during our first week in general. Thanks for the support. Lovely to her from you. Enjoy your week. 🩷🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
Thanks for explaining the difference of what a basilica is... I've always wondered! 🧐
@@MagentaOtterTravels indeed a difference - many never question it. Thanks Dara 👌
Wow, what awesome architecture and small details. It struck me that the person who carved the original statute would be completely gobsmacked with what they had untimely created😀
Couldn’t agree more. Looking down from above in disbelief maybe? It is such a stunning building. Mind boggling how they ever got to build this with the resources back then. Thanks Chris. I’d like to see this again in about 2-3 years time. Have a great Labour Weekend. 😎🇳🇱🙋♀️🥝

Hi Anita, good job on the video., amazing building for sure. Thumbs up. I am a New Subscriber. Cheers Joe 😊
Thanks Joe, Thanks for the comment. It only just showed up. Lovely to have you on board Joe. Have a wonderful Tuesday. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
What a beautiful basilica and it’s nice they’re making the repairs. The inside reminds me of a scary movie with an old church like that (I love scary movies 😂).
I agree August. So happy to see relics like this preserved so the story can be told. Haha love the scary movie reference. Old Basilicas like this can be overwhelming. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
What a beautiful and impressive discovery in this little town, so much remaining from the old age, and looking at the architecture it must have been an amazing job in these days, i am curious how it will look after the restauration.thxs❤
Esther this was so amazing to walk in and gaze at al the windows, the pillars and plasterwork. I'd love to go back in a few years to se eit finished. It was a joy to behold. Thanks for the lovely comment. Have a great Sunday. 👌🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
Vary interesting history Anita! Beautiful church. Love the stained glass. On your road trip did you pass near Strasbourg or Colmar?
I’ll start with Colmar- we did visit there towards the end of our Autumn trip. The Basilique is stunning despite the wear and tear. It’ll look even more fabulous after the renovations. A return visit might just be on the cards. Your trip is getting closer and closer. Very exciting. Enjoy the weekend. 😎🇳🇱🙋♀️🥝
@@IamaDutch-Kiwi Yes, we are currently trying to book out train tickets last night on DB web site, but not luck! Got an error message! Will try again soon!
This looks similar to the one I passed on the way driving to Paris from France, but I don’t think it’s the same one 🤔 Beautiful architecture and full of interesting history!
It’s quite off the beaten track - not on a main route Maia. It is indeed beautiful like many of the churches. The Basilique is just stunning even without Ann the completed renovations. Would love to visit in a couple of years time to see the finished works. Thanks Maia. Love hearing from you. I’ve been a bit busy of late. Slowly getting back into the flow of things. Have a wonderful day. 😍🇳🇱🙋♀️🥝
@@IamaDutch-Kiwi A place not to miss in case one day I’d get to drive around Europe again, especially from Netherlands to France. Ahhh it’s been almost 2 decades! I really miss it. I love to see new places, but when I see something that reminds me of the past I always feel warm in my heart
It's so nice to get a feel of summer at this time of the year even if it's only through the screen. Were those tomatoes growing by the fence at the end of the video?
@@AudroneStorm yes those are tomatoes. Audrone I have that same feeling when watching absurdity video. Especially when it is raining outside my

I'm about the same age as those steps.
But you look none the worse for wear like the steps Boppy. 🇳🇱🙋♀🥝
