Your layout is coming together nicely, I like the look of those tunnel mouths.
I think TT:120 will be good for beginners because it's affordable and you can fit a lot more into a small space compared to O and OO, but it's not as small and fiddly as N gauge.
I think Hornby's decision to make the range exclusive to their website is a bad one, as you won't be able to see the models in model shops.
Thanks for all the great videos this year Charlie, have a nice holiday.

Affordable? As far as I can tell, the prices are very similar to both OO and N. I wish it were otherwise, especially because newcomers have no financial incentives to join the hobby.

I think TT1:120 is well overdue and I wish Hornby all the best with it.
My father was always bemoaning the loss of the 60's TT when he was building sets for me as a boy back in the 70's. He always went on about how he thought the false gauge of OO made the the locos look silly.
Also, just I'd like to point out that Hornby haven't ruled out shop selling, they just haven't started it that way & to be honest with the way online shopping has become so prevalent it makes good business sense. Hornby needs to survive as the alternative would be us squabbling over ever rising 2nd hand prices on eBay for what's left.
ps loving your work, I'm watching this for inspiration whilst I plan my TT1:120 layout on AnyRail

Interesting as always. One of my bosses from way back when had two bits of advice when faced with apparently insurmountable problems... How do you eat an Elephant? - One bite at a time. And my favourited - How do you move a big block of concrete? Chip away at each of the corners and eventually you'll be able to roll it out of the way.
On a practical level, how are you going to maintain access to the points under the hill? Two on the board you are currently working and an then at least one more on the reversing loop? I wonder if the 2" layer of Celotex could be removeable - maybe use some vertical dowel pins to retain position on the 3" layer but retain the ability to left the upper slab off for access.
Have a good mini break - three weeks to next video!

Hi Charlie. For a minute i thought i was viewing another channel... FRED E. MODEL RAILROAD. I said uh oh! 🤣. As always your projects make this hobby worth watching. I have & still learning so much joy to this hobby of model trains. I have 3 scales i work with. HO , O & N scale. Charlie my HO collection takes the cake. Enormous! Inflation has skyrocketed all over do these rates come to our pounds & dollars! 😳. What i look forward to is to moving to a much bigger place in 2023 I want to run trains & another favorite hobby of mine model slot car road & truck racing haven't done that hobby in years, Model railroading over shadowed that. I enjoyed this video loving your humor as well. Definitely a pleasure to view will stay tuned for the 2023 season of CHADWICK PARKWAY & MODEL RAILROADING. After 3 years i once again here in North America have such a joy looking at rails all over the world & many layouts. Happy Holidays to you Charlie. 🎄🚆🚄🚅🚈🚇🚊🚉🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🎉🎊

Charlie, yet another interesting video, with some sage advice yet again.
My father's best friend had a saying that I think sums it up: “By the inch it’s a cinch, by the yard it’s hard”. He was a Mechanical Engineer from Yorkshire, who had emigrated to Australia, and I have used this philosophy all my life, you need to break it all down into manageable chunks.
Thank you for the wonderful videos this yeart, I really do look farward to them, and can't wait for the new ones in 2023 to see your progress.
A very merry Christmas to you, and your family, and have a safe, and happy New Year, and try to keep warm.

Dear Charlie, may I start by saying how much I enjoy your youtube programs, which I think are essential viewing for anyone contemplating or already starting to build a model railway. I would like to share with you and others my views on the Hornby TT120. I think over the last few years it has become quite a challenging and changing industry for the manufacturers with costs escalating no matter what gauge we choose to model in. Model Railways are no longer in the children's toy sector, no matter how we would like to think they are. It has moved on to become more of the dedicated model makers' hobby, and of course, is very expensive in todays financial climate. For Hornby to put so much into developing a new improved TT gauge is to me, a bit of a gamble. We had the original TT railway many years ago, and although there are of course some dedicated supporters of the gauge still around, it had largely faded into the background. So now to reintroduce it, granted to a much more detailed standard than before, is somewhat of a dubious decision. Surely the vast majority of railway modelers around are likely to be older, with spare cash, and already have longstanding railways which they continue to develop, and would much prefer to see new highly detailed models in 00 gauge put into production. There are of course many more second-hand 00 gauge models around and can enable new modelers, and those rekindling old hobbies of their youth, to start without costing a fortune, so I think Hornby would be better off supporting the existing market rather than promoting a new product such as TT. And finally to only sell directly from Hornby and not through the model traders is an atrocious decision.
    Regards to All
    David Richards.

Benefits for me; a layout that means I don’t have to duck under or make a flap or even a helix. Not too bothered about not being able to see the items in person so Hornby direct suits me. Thank you Charlie. Your effervescent videos about your OO-versized have inspired this pensioner re-N-gauging with modelling after many decades. Flat-head screws (N-gauge 8 x 2mm dia), helices, bent rail fish plate easers and various other tools are now part of my repertoire.
I don't have an issue with Hornby's TT-120, but I don't like their exclusion of model shops in its marketing. Too many models shops have already disappeared.
My grandchildren have inherited my old Hornby, but I think I will add to it with other makes.

Good day Charlie. I am off for the holidays. This morning it was a windy 12 degrees Fahrenheit here in NW Louisiana. -3 with the windchill from a Northerly wind at 21 mph. Humidity at 78%. Brrrr! I am not going anywhere!. I popped up your video and then paused it as soon as it started. Decided I wanted to go work on my railroads. It was a cool 50 degrees in the train room. Too cool in there for narrow gauge desert mining. I decided to go work on my Kraken Cove display layout in the guest bedroom where it was warmer. No guests or family visiting this Christmas. I didn't get back to your video until 12 hours later. Time does pass when one is being creative! Kraken Cove? Just a Caribbean seaport, a rum distillery, an O-16.5 narrow gauge railroad and yes, there is old underwater cauldron with an old sunken pirate ship guarded by a large Kraken coming out of an underwater cave below Skull Rock. A bit of fantasy, but fun. It does have a story.
Wind is starting to howl outside. By the way, great video! Merry Christmas and Happy New year!

With regards to Hornby TT, I wish them every success with it, and I hope it does well as its likely to be very attractive to newcomers to the hobby. Charlie - love it. No wonder you got your award, some serious modelling mixed with humour even if it is sometimes self deprecating. No wonder we love you.
As for TT:120, it has become obvious that I will not be able to make a decent layout in OO where I live. N is too small, so the introduction of TT:120 by Peco and Hornby is a very interesting move that I will almost certainly take up. My OO models I guess will either end up on a shelf or on eBay. I just hope that there is a sufficient take up that makes it viable for the companies involved. Knowing how large the development teams are, we shall just have to be patient for those saddle tanks and DMUs we will need, A1s, A4s and Castles have their uses, but for most of us, maybe not so much. As for online purchases, in truth, how many of us have a model shop where we live? I certainly don't any more. So online shopping is a necessary evil for me. If it is Hornby, Hattons or Rails, it doesn't matter, in fact the big shops have probably led to the decline of small shops as much as direct sales form Hornby. Please Peco, consider making some slips in TT:120, both single and double. So there you go. I have joined the TT:120 club and will be dipping more than a toe in the water come 2023 - on which note I wish you and your subscribers a very Happy New Year.

4 years ago I chose N gauge for my 5 by 4 table at the back of the lounge, I’ve got a layout now full of variety from mountains, lakes, quarrries, coal & goods yards, canal, port, seaside village all scratch built out of wood and cardboard. Two double oval tracks plus 2 lengthy branch lines. It LOOKS great but it’s finished, I hardly ever PLAY with it, you battle with Nguage, shunting is almost impossible, couplings are awful etc etc. If 120 is properly supported (and not just by Hornby and Peco) with decent difficult to scratch build scenery items, figures, road vehicles etc then if you’ve not got the space it could be great. At the moment it’s being marketed as table top family fun, as a proper modelling alternative it’s got a very long way to go. (Charlie, by the way, your brilliant).

Re TT120 - I think, if you are starting off afresh in the hobby, it bears consideration and I have no doubt more and more stuff (from rolling stock to buildings) will be come available as time goes on. However, I don't think if you are already committed to another scale, whatever that may be, you are going to be persuaded to swap. I have a modest sized OO layout, but between locos, rolling stock, road vehicles, buildings, etc, etc there would be no way I'd be changing scale.
Happy Christmas to you and yours. Cheers

On power, we cant use a smart meter, we use the ordinary meter and take readings from that, which you just jot down, subtract A from B (the days of weekly read) and multiply the resulting Kw read by the price per Kw. We personally use a spread sheet to keep a record.
Problem for me personally, is that I am sensitive to EMF. So Mobile phones, Smart meters, WiFi etc, are all out, due to the mild headaches they create. When we switched over to Ethernet cables across our home, broadband became so much faster too.

As you know TT was used widely in East Germany and after reunification TT got a kick in the western part of Germany again. Frankly it's the perfect scale for me. N gauge is quite small for a mechanic like me and with HO scale the track plan couldn't be realized due to the limitations of space available. The drawback of TT is the amount of available accessories and of course the price. Friends buying their rolling stock in N or HO gauge are paying far less than TT enthusiast must pay. So I do appreciate Hornby's decision to enter the market in TT gauge. The more competitors there are the more there is a chance that the range of products increases and prices might go down a bit.

In a lot of countries or parts of it, people live in smaller places or do not always have a separate room for their trains and then is TT a good option. It's more used in the EU that we might think.

As someone who hasn't started building a layout yet or bought too much stuff, the arrival of TT120 is giving me a lot of food for thought. While I like the overall size of models at 4mm scale, I just don't like the error in track gauge. I find N too small and O far too big and I don't have the confidence to go down the EM or S4 route (learned that the hard way with my dad 45 years ago where our ambition exceeded our abilities). So a new scale between N and 4mm that is pretty much gauge accurate is very interesting. The downside is of course the fact that it will take ages for there to be a decent range of locomotives and rolling stock. So I'm on the horns of a dilemma.
Meantime I envy you your heating bills! My 16th century house with single pane windows and thin walls costs £6 per hour (after subsidy) to heat even at lower than usual temperatures, so when the snow was down last week I wore 6 layers and we rationed heating strictly. The monthly cost is still horrendous.
Anyway, many thanks for your videos this year - you give me ideas and inspiration so that one of these I will finally take the plunge either in OO or TT. All the best for Xmas and New Year.

I agree about the gauging. It seems strange that wizards like Charlie go to unbelievable lengths to have the utmost realism, then spoil the effect by having track that is simply too narrow so locos don’t look right. Withe quest for ever increasing accuracy, Hornby’s business strategists must have thought this through. I’m guessing they wanted something where they could create a monopoly and charge accordingly. So launch EM? Compared with making complete new locos and rolling stock the mods would be much simpler, and the track would be simpler. But how many established modellers would switch? Not enough? Go HO where the 3.5 gives gauge accuracy? No chance of a monopoly there. N gauge? Not quite the same. N gauge has a true gauge of 4’ 4”, so truer than OO but not true scale. The old Lone Star OOO gives true scale so if Hornby go in hard enough with enough models they could attract new builders while enticing established N gauge builders to keep their layouts and track and replace their entire fleets with Hornby. Isn’t that smart? I’ll stick with my Hornby Dublo 2 rail OO gauge and wallow in the nostalgia of my beloved locos on the wrong tracks. Meanwhile, if that strategy works, and Hornby get their monopoly, will they be the new Lone Star!?

Paul: Heating. Our house is only a bit younger and the Listed Buildings apparatchiks won’t allow even tasteful double glazing. Our downstairs shower room was suffering terrible condensation on the windows. I surveyed the market for kits and installed versions like Anglian. I chose Omega Plastics in Devon as theirs looked well engineered and was competitively priced. My wife wanted glass panes instead of polycarbonate and Omega said we should go for an aluminium frame as it was to big for plastic. So there wasn’t much plastic in Omega “Plastics”. The staff were very helpful. It arrived promptly. It was all really made and went in easily. There has been no more condensation except for 5 minutes after a shower. I am delighted, hence this long message.

Thanks again for another fantastic video. My layout is new and very 2D. Other videos merely talk about making the 3D scenery but your exposition in explaining the why before the how is inspirational. I feel I can start now.with some optimism and the confidence to try things, and even to correct mistakes along the way. It shows your strength of character that you can share your mistakes on screen. You asked for comments about the tunnel entrance heights. They’re OK for diesels and tube trains but I suspect proper steam locos would need a bit more clearance to reduce the thrust from their exhausts onto the tunnel lining. Happy Christmas and thanks again.

Once you have glued your foam down, a good way to sculpt it is to use a short one-handed 2" surform and 'file' it into shape. Then cover by painting with cheap tile adhesive/grout using a wetted paintbrush. You can add texture or keep it smooth, fill in gaps and it dries in 24 hrs as long as you don't apply it too thickly. Cheap as chips when you consider the area you can cover from a 5 litre tub. It dries as hard as plaster bandage and easily drills for trees etc. Paint it with cheap emulsion paint before scatter so no white shows through.

Hi Charlie, a great video, so may useful tips. I love the landscaping videos you do, as I don’t ever know where to start with landscaping and your videos give confidence to just get stuck in with the celotex/kingspan. And the end results (yours at least) are spectacular. On the subject of TT120, I don’t really see the benefit of another size within the range of N and OO. I’m invested in OO and that’s where I’ll be staying, due to the huge choice within that scale. Also, as a child in early 1980’s Hornby was the go-to brand for OO. However, coming back to the hobby in my late 40’s, and seeing the quality available from people like Accurascale or Bachmann, it feels to me like Hornby is inferior quality, and poor value for money. I think the last thing this hobby needs is another scale, not too dissimilar from scales already available. Hornby should focus their attention on the scales they already offer - better to do one thing well, than many things to a mediocre standard.

As a child, I was given a Triang TT train set. The scale disappeared soon after, and the set was assigned to a couple of cardboard boxes and placed in the cellar (where it resides to this day).
I have often thought about that set and wished TT would come back. Well, now it's happened, and what's more, it is now true to scale. Well done, Hornby, as I stare retirement in the face, I now have a plan.
As for Hornby s business plan of only selling on-line, it suits me as I can't remember the last time I visited an actual shop for anything.
I shall be ordering a set, track and accessories on-line in the very near future.

I saw your Number 181 on Hornby TT120. The idea is hugely attractive: more track in a given space than 00 - vital for me, and much less fiddly than N - I struggle. However, the drawbacks you point out put it out of court until there's some competition to broaden the available kit, which is going to be difficult given Hornby's marketing strategy. Thanks and keep up the good work, Charlie.

Hi Charlie. Nice video. Yes I agree with you, it is better to try and plan your landscapes first if you can, rather than go straight at it. That way, you are liable to make less mistakes when it actually comes to building/constructing them. I also tend to find that if you can make some rough mock ups of what you are trying achieve first, it gives you a better idea of what things will look like and it is far easier to alter things then if you need to. Best wishes, Mark.

Re TT I think for people looking to build their first layout or have a lack of space but find N Scale too small it would be popular. I have too much invested in OO and would also like to see it in the flesh so perhaps limiting it to Online only by Hornby is interesting.

Nice one Charlie! I love the way you make fun of yourself. As for TT scale, I think it has been there for a long time and I have a Triang loco a friend of mine gave me in the 70's. Recently I got it to work but all my other stuff is HO which I have collected for the last 40+ years. That includes mostly Hornby! TT is a great scale as it is between N and HO/OO which is great for small layouts. Most of us have only space for an 8-10 foot x 3 or 4 foot area and HO does not allow one to have too much of anything there. N is too small for the banana fingers and TT is great for these reasons. But I cannot throw away all what I have for TT!

Thanks Ananda, I totally agree. Once you are committed to a scale, it’s very hard to change. Regards, Charlie

Good project planning advice there, Charlie. I was always taught, "How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time." I am 73 and not a railway modeller myself but was when I was a boy; OO gauge like everyone else. I recall seeing some Triang TT3 stuff and thinking it was perfect for those with space issues. I thought it was far more attractive than N gauge which was too toylike for my taste. I can't think of a logical reason why TT 120 wouldn't take off but the public's appetite will prove to be the final arbiter. I don't suppose many will rip out their 00 to convert so it looks risky not having examples in shops to attract new starters.

Hi Charlie hope you having a nice Christmas? Now that Sellotex you mentioned is called form board I saw it in WICKS they sell it in large sizes and I thought thats good stuff to build a layout on nice and light and so easy to move around only trouble is it not cheap 8ft x 4 the 3in one was £100 a sheet. and the 2inc £70 ? So the price put me off and to be honest i was not a 100% sure if it would be a good idea for a layout. What do you think.? Do like watching your channel as i like to get ideas from someone like your self on the Hobbie can be very helpful. Thankyou Happy New Year.

It really is good stuff Michael, but please don’t buy any. There are lots of building sites that discarded willy-nilly. Regards Charlie

What a great video Charlie, no more helicopter modelling. Focus focus focus on set targets…. But what if the targets move or change… as they always do!! Lol the stage looks great for the TMD area. Wishing you a great Christmas and new year, have a great three weeks. Until 2023 good sir, all best Marc

Hi Charlie! Been at the father-in-laws and I don’t like using up his internet allowance, so I’ve only just caught up with this! 😄
I rather like the technique you use for scenery. I realise that your method is quite similar those of Richard on Everard Junction and Julian on Station Road, where you essentially create the land and carve out the contours. It does seem a very simple, lightweight and flexible way to create a great effect, o I have been taking notes! 😉
I think in terms of how to approach tasks: I m in agreement that it helps to set targets and almost “project manage” in a similar way you’d perhaps build a house or create a garden. When I built my old garden railway for example, I kept a kind of log in a hardback notebook my then girlfriend bought me. After each day I’d sit down with a cuppa and write a brief summary of what progress I had made, any difficulties encountered and solutions I had come up with for future reference. I would then write down any new ideas I hd or amendments I had decided upon before then writing out a rough list of tasks to follow the next time I had a day or weekend free 🤓
Thanks for all the great content on the channel again Charlie. It’s great fun and something I genuinely look forward to on a Friday! I enjoy your laid back, inclusive attitude and your genuine love for the hobby really comes across 😎
Hope you had a great Christmas and let hope for a fabulous 2023! Cheers mate 👍🍻🍀🍾

Thank you Tim, for such an interesting comment.
I think we have to “project manage” our railway to keep our Mojo alive.
Breaking tasks down into segments certainly helps us to feel that we are achieving more.
It’s great to have you on board mate and best wishes for 2023.
      Regards, Charlie
