Man. As a percussionist and King Crimson fan, this is freaking great. All of the textural stuff on Discipline sounds great on marimba.
Any even bad non pro musician can nail any song after some time copying.
No compliments as they'd discovered the Moon... 🤔
@@EloyGijon67 Maybe you missed it, but it turns out that there’s a 1000-year-long tradition of arranging and performing other people’s compositions. It’s commonly called “classical music. Boy, what a waste of time that was according to Eloy.

This took a lot of discipline. I mostly get bogged down in indiscipline. I end up playing little games with this video. Like not watching it for days and days .. and then... Watching it. To see if I still liked it.... I DID!!!

Very cool. And very in keeping with Fripp’s idea that this was to be a gamelan-like piece.
It bothers me that more people don’t know about this, or about the beauties of the gamelan in general.
TH-cam needs a "love" button because a "like" button doesn't do this performance justice.
This is the best version of this I have heard since the original, and if anything demonstrates what absolute genius this version of KC was.
Great Job! I played a similar arrangement back in the last century for my percussion bachelor degree concert, being the crimhead that I am. The committee was not very pleased with it as "the piece lacked expression". Since then I played it in several different contexts (even one in front of Robert Fripp) and the piece never ceases to move me.
I bet those who said "the piece lacked expression" would have fallen all over themselves had you adapted a work by Philip Glass. I love Glass, but "expression" is not a comment often heard about much of his oeuvre.

This is all the more impressive when one considers that the marimba is playing two guitar parts that shift into two different time signatures at three different times during the piece.
Right but it's multi-tracked. He's not playing those two parts simultaneously. As the video description says, you're watching him play Fripp's part; the other players' parts were recorded separately and have been mixed together.
Wow, awesome! So, now can hear everybody, how was Discipline inspirated by the gamelan music!

This is one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever heard
I saw the Discipline line up perform at Palais Montcalm, Québec City in (?) 1982 a few days after the album came out. Had no idea what I was in for. Came out with my musical stars completely realigned. You nail the musical math extremely well. Must have taken a lot of... ahem... discipline (not an end in itself, but a means to an end).

My first thought: This would be a good animusic animation.
Fripps guitar work always felt "percussiony" to me, this validates that feeling so well. Would you be interested in doing the guitar line from the song Starless (the 2nd section of the song, after the chorus and before jazzy part)? I think that would work very well with your instrument as well.
