Japan's engineering solutions for the next tsunami

  • Due to its geographical location on the Ring of Fire, Japan is one of the most seismically active countries on the planet.
As a result, it is frequently devastated by tsunamis, such as the massive tidal wave that occurred on March 11, 2011, following a 9.1-magnitude earthquake that struck 45 miles (72 kilometers) off the coast of the Oshika Peninsula.
The wave hit the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant and caused a nuclear disaster on a scale not seen since Chernobyl. The question then becomes what is the country doing to prevent such disasters?
In the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami, Japan’s Reconstruction Design Council, an advisory panel to then-prime minister Naoto Kan, proposed implementing two classes of tsunami protection for varying levels of severity.
One is for L1 grade tsunamis that occur every 10 to 100 years and another for L2 grade tsunamis that occur every several hundred to 1,000 years. These precautions include the construction of sea walls and tsunami-resistant structures.
But are they enough? How well have they worked so far against natural catastrophes such as earthquakes, floods, and tsunamis, for example? Do they also tackle flood prevention? What else can be done, and how is the country innovating on the measures already in place? Are there any new inventions that can offer added protection? Is the country considering other options?
In our video, we provide answers to these and other questions.

Really, Japan's technology and construction are extremely different from all the other countries thinking.
The most important thing that I liked in this video is Tsunami C -WALL type 😲😳

It's good to pray about it, but countries should take actions like Japan to prevent it because these natural disaters are bound to happen

Use the same material that are used in these walls but design houses to let the water go over have a couple rooms designed to hold oxygen for a few hours

If IG could please understand that who ever they have narrating their videos needs to change the way that they are trying to deliver the message. Topics that should be concerning, scary or worrisome are instead told with a fake inflection that sounds fun, unnatural and weird emphasis on every word.

i think all edges of lands connecting to ocean should be build up and forested. especially as sea levels rise and extreme disasters rise. that seems insane but there is a lot of organic waste that fills landfills and a lot of sand on the ocean floor and lots of rocks and bolders lots of things could be used to build up the mass. japan could be surrounded by something like this. the height of the land and the trees in the forest could be built up high enough and then other preventative measures combined it this could do something. also with all the destruction of the forest in the world it would benefit that as well

This should be shared with America for hurricanes 🌬️🌊🌀 season!! Look at Florida now after the destruction from Hurricane Ian 2022. Little warning time was given. Not enough help to flee the area in time for incoming hurricane sea submersion. Homes, boats, cars, all floating objects for the hurricane to destroy in its path. 😭 No living in Hawai’i , but it could happen here too one day.

I am very impressed by Japan's innovations in tsunami preparedness and education of it's citizens. Even their young children are highly educated in what to do in the event of an earthquake and/or tsunami.
The safety of it's citizens is always foremost on the minds of authorities. The loss of life would be so much greater without those innovations.
