Went to check this out on Reddit to ensure the idea wasn’t stolen, as I’d seen it appear in my recommended a day before, and all of this is genuinely made by this person, ‘Whoa Horsey’.
The idea is well crafted, fits the Rainworld aesthetic, sound design and feel. Having the mask be a silencer makes manoeuvring areas like The Leg easier, as many enemies are based off of sound there, including the dreaded Rot (I mostly just call the ‘Rot’ cancer).
Great idea, great execution, great description and more. The idea fits well into the game, and I hope all goes well!

I didn't really think about that when making them, so I guess they would behave like normal maskless vultures. I think a cool detail is that since the mask provides the silence buff, one that looses it's mask would be kicked out of a flock because loosing their silence could disrupt a hunt

With the mask power concept, I think it would also be nice if wearing an owl mask makes them less likely to attack you and go for other prey if there are more in that one room. And if not, since it is only slightly larger than a slugcat, I would assume in dark areas like shaded citadel, an owl could mistake a slugcat with a mask for another owl, and would ignore them the first time they made noise, and only go after them the second time noise is done.

If you can drag a jetfish into the water, you can probably drag an owl onto land. They’d probably be too busy trying to survive to worry about hunting you, and they wouldn’t be able to immediately fly away with you as prey due to their wet wings, so it would give you a grace period to scurry away if dragging them out of the water didn’t fully tame them. All in all I like this idea.

I also think it'd be really cool if they had some indicator of their damage(especially since at minimum they can't kill you in one hit), maybe higher damage ones have slightly bulkier bodies, and the mask types are connected to their damage? So, you're more likely to find wide-eyes and discs on the weaker ones, then smooth and finally spiked on the strongest ones?

I'd say flock owls should be one-shot; mobbing sounds like it would be an excellent alternative to a QTE that fits not despite but _because_ Rain World is a movement game, but making them attack multiple times would drag it on for too long.
The time to react* should likely be ~0.65s-0.35s ±0.1s, or a flat 0.5s ±0.1s if "New dynamic difficulty" is disabled. Also they would have to be heavy, as to make the spears easy to retrieve.
*Only starting from the moment when an input should be made, so: The time you'd spend in perfect play *+* the buffer, per move; you would be spending some time walking/airborne/whatever that do not count towards these numbers, you wouldn't need a ridiculous 240 CPM. Also keep in mind the faster the "event" is, the shorter the amount of time that you would have to be concentrated.

Oooo was the tamable idea inspired by my comment????
And also when tamed I think olws should be able to be used as squidcadas of sorts?? Or maybe they hold a spear on their legs for you or yeet it. Also uh another idea that could work for smaller prey (specifically slugcat) would be picking you up and throwing you from the heights attempting to kill/stun you it'd be very cool to see this behaviour on flock owls as if each one had a role in the hunt

Wearing an owl mask convincs them that you are one of their species (atleast until you get close).
You could grab Owls that enter the water to save them and that would increase reputation or instantly tame them.
You could grab tamed Owls and use them like more controlled squidcadas (maybe you could hold jump to make them fly, since you're like the same size they wouldnt fly for long or very high)

    • @spazmak666

These are super cool, although for some reason the bird-ness bothers me... They don't Have to be related to Vultures in any way in order to be a flying threat, but I like that the "Vultures" barely resemble birds at all. Weird grappling things on the face, distinctly shaped masks that are more reminiscent of an insect's mandibles, unwieldy body and pathetic wing structure. It's distinctly alien but also distinctly designed, as most creatures in RW appear to be, having been meddled with and turned bio-machine aeons ago by the ancients. And since they copy a few things from the Vultures, namely the mask-developing their faces do, I would imagine there is SOME relation. Maybe their quick ascension into the sky could be aided by a smaller thruster on their body, similar to how the Vultures fly.
I like how mostly natural the Owl feels, but it also looks like... yknow, an actual owl, as if it was from earth and just ported into this alien world. It really feels like a creature who happened to evolve into it's own niche & adapt better and quicker than others- but, we've seen evolution in this game before, somewhat, and it appears pretty limited. Possibly due to the way the ancients bio-machined everything so every organism was purposed? Seeing a creature somehow make it's way out of that limitation is fascinating. I'd love if it still had evidence in it of once being purposed and from the world the ancients' built. As it is, it's a VERY natural feeling creature, maybe too natural, if that makes sense.
It would be really cool if it had a more unique facial structure as opposed to basic birdlike beak, or just a more vague silhouette, to embrace the alien-ness of the world. I remember a while ago seeing artworks showcasing the different structures of beaks and bird feet and how they're specialised to do what they do.... I imagine this Owl would have evolved specialisations to reflect it's hunting styles. Maybe the stronger an Owl is, the bigger the mask, as if they rely on swooping they'd want more hard surfaces on their body to smack into their prey and protect themselves. (I'm imagining an Owl with a funny helmet on now.... Takes proper protection to dive safely........)
Additionally, the masks totally covers their entire face. Probably works great for diving, but how are they supposed to grab anything when it's so snugly over their mouth? Hence why I suggested to do away with the beak, if they had a different structure in there like the vulture's mandibles, then the masks themselves could keep the beak shape and probably have the wriggle room underneath to allow the Owl to grab it's prey. The Vulture masks have that little divot at the front specifically to give their mouth room for use. Works fine for a long-necked turkey that just plucks it's prey up off the ground, not so much for a creature who is the same size as it's prey.
Maybe another gameplay mechanic, depending how fast the swoop is, would be to add the sightlines that King Vultures have. Maybe not the whole time it's eyes are open, rather just when it's offscreen. That gives the players opportunity to see what the Owl is thinking when they can't see the Owl itself.
And, if they hunt prey bigger than themselves I would assume some things can't be taken off into the sky with them. Maybe they can be distracted in a "feeding" state for a time, where the flock just swarms the carcass and is too busy mangling it to notice when prey better-suited to be stored in their nests makes noise.

    • @Wallace_Horsey
      @Wallace_Horsey  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@spazmak666 Thanks for the feedback! My thought process behind owls looking more natural than other vultures is that they could have evolved after the ancients had acended (though we don't really know how long ago that was) and adapted to fit a more niche roll in the ecosystem. In some of the images in the video, I did add a thruster onto them to add to their relation with vultures, but in the main image showcasing them I accidentally left the thruster off, as it was screenshotted before I decided to add the thruster and I forgot to update it.
The mask being shaped like a real bird beak was to make it seem adapted to the owls hunting style. vultures grab with their madibles and fly off before the prey is actually dead, so having grabbing madibles makes sense. Owls are too small to fly off with any prey larger than a slugcat, so they would have to kill it before flying away, hence the hunting style of swooping. a sharp beak would help with piercing and stabbing damage, especially with a good amount of speed built up from a swoop.
the mask covering the whole face, I'll be honest I tried to experiment with the face showing a bit under the mask but it ended up looking weird or goofy so I just left it how it is.
Adding sightlines like with king vultures would take away from the stealth and silence aspect of owls. they're meant to use the element of surprise with their silent mask ability to ambush prey. I get how this could be seen as a bit broken, as you wouldn't be able to tell when their coming, which is why I added that they screech before a hunt, as kind of a warning to the player.
I like the idea of the feeding state, I never really went into detail or thought about how they handle their prey after catching them so I think that's a cool idea :)

The original concept was made a couple months ago with another species called hawks (which came first in 2023) and I've been adding to them since then. Then I coincidentally find this video today. From watching this, it's really interesting to see what other people can make with very similar ideas and have them be extremely unique. I liked the social behaviors, which is basically the opposite of my owl concept since they naturally don't have masks. The fact that you can tame them also makes this really intriguing.

the way I see it, Rain World, while meant to act as an ecosystem simulator, is not as realistic as it seems and is still very much a "fantasy" game. In the example of vulture masks, they just don't make since at all. How do the vultures get them? they clearly don't have the ability to craft them, so is every vulture somehow born with both a mask and a pair of thrusters, two inorganic things that are physically impossible to occur in a natural ecosystem? same with the robotic jaws of a leviathan and the legs of a miros bird. How can the Gourmand just pull an infinite amount of items (including other living creatures) from its stomach or the artificer turn a spear into an explosive one by putting it in its mouth? for a "makes sense for Rain World" idea, maybe the mask is made of a special sound-absorbing material or something.

You are naming Biotic and abiotic creatures. These have to be made by an intelligent species as these cannot be made naturally using our knowledge on every creature in rainworld. These have to be made by iterators or ancients. Leviathans, miros birds, miros vultures, king vultures and vulture grubs (tell me if I’m missing anything.) are abiotic and biotic things mixed together. Vulture masks have blood flow because they lose saturation when knocked off, They are physically connected because it takes a perfect hit to take one off and They are different in color and shape. It’s either they make the masks, acquire them somewhere else or they grow with them (most likely.) these jet packs use gas to fly and control themselves, they do not look abiotic. Therefore vulture masks are in 2 Scenarios: A Creatures of sonaria shararook or a creature who grows these masks for defense. Vultures kill demasked vultures because they probably are sickly and therefore making future vultures with stronger masks. I am 90% sure vulture masks are natural and are basically the finger print of vultures.

@@Wallace_Horsey squids can suck water in and shoot it out as a way of thrust. Arial creatures could do the same with biological gas like substance. Considering how big the vultures are it would make sense they would evolve this instead of really developed wings considering the size they would need to be to be the primary source of movement.

@@Wallace_Horsey gourmand can only make these infinite amount of items from food pips. Therefore it’s not infinite. Considering it takes up food pips as he vomits it up. It’s only natural to assume he’s vomiting food he has previously ate considering the fact food pips are being taken.

I know it’s a mod and I love this concept however I really hate the rainbow variant

regular rainbow vultures already exist in rain world, the rainbow owls are meant to be referencing that (same with albino)

@@Skeletonarchmage it's fine lol, i think they're only a part of downpour and even then they're really rare so it's more of a hidden easter egg in the game. I kinda agree the original colors on the rainbow owl are very saturated and look unnatural, but in some other pictures in the video I scaled down the saturation to make them look more like the in-game rainbow vultures.

Owls technically cannot be called a vulture
Only trait that owl shares with vultures is mask
And I think it's gonna be hard for it, to hunt without having neck

@@Marx8679 kinda... I started the concept and made these sprites before this month even started, the upload date was just a coincidence, and they are, for the most part, made as a reference to the rainbow vultures already seen in-game. that being said, I was 100% aware of the next month was and decided to lean into it to show representation and pride. but yes, the are mostly meant to be based on the already existing rainbow vultures.
