I worked at FCS before. Some foster parents and adoptive parents had a savior attitude. They were saving children. But some of these kids had behaviors as a result of abuse or neglect. Some kids would act out when the family was doing something normal. They were triggered because they only understand chaos. Some of the adults would take the negative behavior as an attack on them and not about the child and their past. The children would need lots of therapy and supports to help them grow up.

My MIL is a foster parent and an actual saint. She has done so so much good for kids like you’re describing and a lot of it is helping them express themselves and working through that need for the chaos bc it feels more normal to them. One little girl would scream at the top of her lungs every morning at 6 am. MIL would say “I can see you are upset right now, and that is ok to feel, you can yell right here for as long as you need and then when you feel ready we will talk about it ok?” Man, I’m telling you, in 6 months time that same little girl went from completely emotionally disregulated to a seemingly normal 5 yr old with my MIL. You just can’t push too hard with them, they’re like cats. You gotta let them come to you and be there to support them when the time is right FOR THEM.

there should be required counseling on how to raise a special needs child and what to expect, and how to handle them. It's tough even for the best parents. I couldn't do it. I don't judge anyone who changes their mind afterward

All you have to do is watch that first adoptive father speak to know he's not right in the head. 1. He was the adult, I don't care how strong of a personality his wife had, he was an adult charged with protecting that child and yes, she was a CHILD and they went and had her age legally changed and put her out on her own in a 2nd floor apartment as a CHILD. It's disgusting they got away with that.

You hit every nail right on the head. The adoptive family you’re talking about that abandoned her originally adopted her to prove that the mother, Kristine, could raise prodigies and geniuses because her oldest is an autistic math prodigy and she was CONVINCED it was because of her. When Natalia ended up being a very average academic child, severe abuse started happening to basically beat her into being a “genius”. When that obviously didn’t work, Kristine started setting up the lies that Natalia was dangerous and threatening to kill them all and that she was actually an adult pretending to be a child. Her and Michael, the dad, got ONE doctor to suggest she was not a child (even though multiple other doctors before that confirmed she was indeed a child to them) and got her WAY aged up so they could drop her off to fend for herself in an apartment at age 7/8. Kristine didn’t want to take Natalia back to the adoption agency because she didn’t want it to look bad on her because she was coming out with a book about her oldest. She’s absolutely been called a narcissist and fits the definition to a T.
In the documentary, Natalia confronts Michael about what happened to her in their household and he either straight up denies some things she said, says he never saw that happen when she knows he did, or says he won’t talk about it because, “That’s too emotional.” More like he didn’t want to risk being charged for anything.
Also, Natalia’s most recent adoptive family are extremely religious and found her when she was left by herself at another apartment and took her in. Natalia was diagnosed with RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder), which means she feels she needs to test the very limits of the families that adopt her to prove to herself that they won’t leave or abandon her; which could explain any behavioral changes in Natalia after the Manses, her most recent family, officially and legally adopted her. Her whole story is enraging and makes me SO angry. Every adult in her life up to the Manses unequivocally let her down. I don’t know what the deal is with the Manses and her, but I hope she’s ok and safe and learning how to be happy. She deserves an easy life from here on out, she’s fought like hell to make it to adulthood.

      @dwaalatticsalt7886 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

@@hollystiener16, her biological mother made an appearance in the second part of the series. She said the doctor told her it would be best for her to give Natalia up for adoption because she didn’t have the means to care for her the way she’d need, and she already had other children that she was caring for. She said she feels awful that she listened to the doctor and that Natalia had a terrible childhood when she was doing what she thought was best. Natalia said she has no desire to reconnect or meet her biological mother because she felt the Manses were her parents. I don’t know if that’s changed now that the situation with the Manses has changed, though. I understand the pain and disconnect she feels towards her biological mom, and I understand the regret and guilt her biological mother feels.
Also, she was in a Russian orphanage before she was adopted by her first family in America, not Kristine and Michael, and it sounds terrifying what she remembers of it. They used very unusual and traumatizing tactics to keep all the kids in line since there were so many kids and not many caregivers. Natalia also talks about remembering being drugged as a toddler, taken somewhere she doesn’t remember, has a vague image of a man she’d never met before in front of her, and then being drugged again. She was shown a picture of a man that fits her vague description pretty closely and she’s laying down in front of him and he’s holding her feet down. They don’t say anything outright, but it’s implied that maybe she was drugged and trafficked to this man before being taken back to the orphanage. It’s all really gross and I didn’t like that the producers showed her that picture for the first time on camera.

She was literally forced to learn bad behavior. Not just from her adopted parents but those who had abused her before. A child would not know what she is being taught is bad if she ends up getting rewarded for it. She needed help. She now has a lot of healing to do especially with the validation she has received recently about being right about her age. Everyone used her like a cash cow. I’m sure trust and wanting to be loved desperately is something she will need to work on. She was beaten to please the abuser. I’m sure trauma related behaviors reflect in that based on conditioning. She was a minor. She never killed anyone. Bad behavior was how she got attention from anyone. I’m tired of her being demonized when gypsy rose is being praised for murdering her mother. This world is so messed up especially to those with disabilities. People so desperately want the “orphan” movie to be true that they are willing to over look the fact that this girl was abused and failed by the system many times without having any form of justice.

Narcissistic parents love doing this thing where they hold kids to adult standards, like they assume the kid is cognitively the same as an adult and thus "should know better". Like my narc mom talks about me crying too much as a LITERAL INFANT as if I was a 25y/o roommate who was acting up to deliberately make her life difficult. Or she'd neglect me because she thought I could take care of myself as well as an adult.
So it's really interesting how the first adoptive mom--who is a total narcissist--went out of her way to LEGALLY AND MEDICALLY have Natascha categorized as an adult to justify doing the same things to her.

I didnt know what to think when I first heard of this case-very odd. There was a lot of media that was bad directed Natalia and its amazing how persuasive that can be. But what the adopters did also sounded strange so it was hard to know what to decide. Nope, didnt hear your stomach growling. lol.

I always knew she was a kid. Her age could have been off by a couple of years but there was no way I believed she was an adult. I know a lot of immigrants that are off on the age they put down. Either to be able to attend school longer or they just don’t really know their birthdate due to being born in small villages at home. All my cousins born in the old country their birthdate are just estimation.

Conspiracy theory-I feel like the documentary missed a lot of the true motive. Im sure Kristine did care a lot about her public image and that was a big piece of it, but more as a means to an end. The Barnetts had some random ass charity about stopping stigma towards disabled people or some shit like that and everything about it was very vague and up in the air, and there was never any clear answer of where the money from that charity was actually “donated” to. I think Natalia was basically adopted by the Barnetts as a mascot of sorts for this charity to make it less noticeable that it was a pretty blatant slush fund for a cause that they pulled out of thin air. Sure the son had mild autism but he was also plastered all over national news as this prodigy and also from a pretty privileged family so they needed a kid who could attract a broader range of sympathy from the general public. Then it backfired on the Barnetts cause she cost them more money with all the surgeries than she made them. And now Michael is doubling down calling the ex wife evil and all this stuff because he’s realized that Natalia seemingly has a bit more grace for him than she does for Kristine and is hoping that if Natalia does pursue a civil suit or further legal action that she focuses on Kristine alone and believes that he was also a victim and is sorry or whatever. Cause as much as legal trouble as he was initially facing for child neglect, I’m sure that’s nothing compared to that level of tax fraud. Just what a creepy family all around

Actually she was determined to be 9 and not 6 at the time of the first adoption. So her age was off by 3 years which would explain a lot. Including her menses and body hair which can come early in age especially if there are contributing health factors. her mental health and possible psychotic behaviors would also be more significant if it existed. I think she definitely confused her adoptive parents and there was probably lots of contributing factors that culminated in the situation getting totally out of control including bad stuff from the adoptive family obviously. They should have worked harder on her behalf to help her work through her trauma and confusing past but they failed her. No matter what her age she was a disabled and very vulnerable person that needed lots of help and compassion and she ended up with a couple of complete a-holes.

Many things you said reminded me of my autism. One of the things was you were talking about her not being able to communicate effectively and “cant get the words out”. In addition, if the second family was very religious, they could be looking down on her because of being small and thinking “thats the work of the devil”. The thing the second family could have wanted her to become (in relation to faith) might not have been working like they wanted due to her possible difficulty with social cues or on another mote being literal and can’t see metaphor. I have autism and its difficult for me to not understand something is literal.

  • @Iflie

She was given up at birth into an orphanage, that's not small trauma, that's a kid smaller than the other disabled kids and having to fight for everything. Of course she was going to people please and act out. They thought putting thumbtacks on the stairs was a sign she was evil, when I think that's just exactly the sort of thing an angry kid does. Also I don't think the testing for her biological age said she was as old as the adoption agency claimed, it was an age range and she could easilly be afew years older. Well within the range of some of the things they described about her not looking her age.
You can't please overly religious people, anything they do not like would be deemed demonic and they wouldn't allow for any negative behaviour either. Many people have serious issues with adopted kids, that should be something they are prepared for, some will always keep acting out, especially to parental figures.

Her second adopted family was beyond wrong. If they cannot handle her, they needed to turn her back over to the state.
But I think of her first family would actually come out and talk about their experience with her. It may shed some more light onto the situation.
