Haunting World Music History Vol 1
Chapter 1 Helvegen(The Way To Hel)(Short Rough Draft Version of Haunting World Music History Vol 1)
I remember the first time hearing this song, I was incredibly moved by it. The slow monotonous drums wasn’t something I was used to, but grew to love. It helped slow everything down for me and connect me with the song at a much deeper level.
Though I had no idea what Einar was saying, I knew he was saying something meaningful. So I googled Helvegen lyrics in English and read the translation, but still after reading it, had no clue what he was saying. 🥴
I had to dig deeper into what other people’s interpretation from this song was and found some that were very compelling, especially C.B. Robertson's: / helvegen-an-analysis
Here's a quick summary. In the first verse the narrator is asking the listener to put him or her to rest or peaceful death through song. The narrator then makes their way to Hel(The cold world of the dead).
In the second verse speaks of the narrator's journey to find knowledge of the “runes” in Norse mythology, and the sacrifices they have to endure to attain such knowledge.
Lo there do I see my father.
Lo there do I see my mother.
Lo there do I see my brothers and my sisters.
Lo there do I see the line of my people back to the beginning.
Lo they do call to me;
they bid me take my place among them in the Halls of Valhalla,
where the brave may live forever.
There is no feeling like that of the warrior spirit. This song stops me in my tracks and I long for my day. I want people to sing my song. Tell my story. My saga. My highs, my lows. My triumph over life’s battles and how I bravely went to death proud of the life I lived. Odin give me strength each day to face what life brings. Be it battle against a foe, or battle against the elements. Odin, Allfather, remember your son. Give him courage. Give him strength. TILL VALHALLA CALLS ME HOME!
First Christmas without my Grandpa. This song makes so much sense.
Gives me chills, my ancestors cheer
Thank you for the translation. It’s so odd that the lyrics now make more sense since the passing of my father.
Thank you for this. I love the Wardruna original but hearing it in English is very cool.
