I had a horrible experience with David Crosby at Steven Still’s house in 1968 right after thy gave a concert at the Greek theatre. I’ve never forgotten the incident. I was sitting on the floor with some friends, leaning against the wall, when suddenly Crosby appeared right in front of me, arms folded truculently, his shoes right against my legs, glaring down at me. I had never met him and had no idea what motivated his obviously aggressive and completely out of the blue behavior. I didn’t want to get in a fist fight with Crosby, even if he was being a asshole. As I said, I had never had any contact at all with Crosby before that moment.
Did you happen to look like either Jagger or Richards at that time? Even if David were only in a mildly altered state of mind, it's quite easy to see the scenario you describe play out.
A child's playground tit for tat setup here to illicit an abrasive response from a long deceased rock icon!? Could the finished product be anything but skin crawl embarrassing!? "Morrison", to me, is how absolutely rock bottom David Crosby could go in his occasional efforts to stir controversy through his art. The far more "Southern gentlemanly" Jim would never have provided a "tat" anyway, leaving only one person looking like a tit. That said, David and the rest of The Byrds left us with a treasure of some of the greatest American popular music ever created. And for that, sir, we, and a good portion of the world, are deeply appreciative. May your current travels be of unending interest and value to you.
Interesting comments. Well, the music for Morrison was composed by David's son James, and the lyrics were Davids and we arranged the tune together. As it was the first piece of music the two of them wrote together when they met, David didn't know he had a son until James was in his 30s, this song holds a special place for a lot of people. As for David's decision to express his art though lyric, an artist most certainly has the right to use their craft to express whatever they want. The difference here is, David knew Jim and my guess is maybe you didn't. Apart of the iconic work of Jim and David has left behind (I love both of their stuff personally) since David had interactions with Jim, from the story the song tells, obviously things didn't go well. Sh*t happens! David decided to write a song about it and it's his expression. I love the tune myself (although I played guitar on it and it was our first single that had airplay for CPR) and well, everyone has a right to their feelings. I respect yours. A lot of people love the tune so there ya go. Thanks for sharing. Be well.

So, much respect to you. As to David and his son, I'd have thought their first meeting after so many years, a monumentally life changing event for both, and to discover, as David said, his son was a far better musician than the old man, would've resulted in a first musical collaboration that had nothing to do with a guy who was looking for "a lucky little lady in a city if light, " way, way back when. But my opinion of the song aside, David Crosby was a music hero of mine, one of the earliest. I had a brief conversation with him in London many years ago.
