  • Hello friends!
    I'm super excited to finally be sharing a post review on my biggest, most complex project to date: "Magical Merry Go Round" from the artist Josephine Wall and the company Diamond Painting Deutschland. Their kits are unique in that they have a LOT of colors - in this case, 220 colors on a 100 x 75cm canvas. I have SO many thoughts to share and I'm very anxious to hear your thoughts, as well. I thoroughly enjoyed this project and am even thinking of doing another in the not-so-far future!

    Regarding the copyright of Josephine Wall on the pictures. We got the acceptance from the Artists to delete the Name from the pictures in the future. And regarding the symbols, we got a brand new huge plotter of the next generation and the print will be much better. Regarding the question more or less colours. We think more colours are really better to have and see more details. Yes, the size is important, but if you have two the same picturs with 40-50 colours or more than 150, you can see the difference. The pictures from Josephine are really made for professional Painters with experiance and are looking for work a project for a longer time. And please let us know, if you will made another picture from us again. I really enjoy your video.

      Hi Gilbert! Thank you so much for commenting and for the insight and information about your company. I really, really enjoyed working on this kit from DPD, and I'm definitely planning to try another Josephine Wall kit in the near future. It was such a unique and special experience! I actually emailed you directly to ask if there are specific kits you'd recommend ordering, that use the new plotter you mentioned. I'd love to see the difference!
      Thank you again!

    First, congratulations on finishing this! It looks like a massive undertaking and the end result is beautiful!
    Second, thank you for your honest review. I love Josephine Wall’s artwork but hate doing square drills so I had been looking into other companies that license and offer rounds. You saved me a ton of money! Looking at the rendering, cost, shipping, and glue type really helped me realize I wouldn’t have very much fun working on it and wouldn’t love the rendered results.
    Thank you for all of your videos, I love watching them! I can’t wait to see what you start working on next

      Aww, thank you so much, Chelsea! I'm really glad that this was so helpful for you and helped you make a decision about whether or not to purchase one for yourself. For what it's worth, they do offer a number of Josephine Wall kits (not this one, unfortunately) in round drills, but that doesn't change their rendering style, cost, or glue. I just wanted to let you know! But there are lots of lovely companies out there, and if you have your heart set on a JWall, you could take a look at the charts from Heaven and Earth Designs.

    Congratulations, Katie ! Excellent job!
    I'm pretty sure the name at the bottom is a mistake DPD made. It shoudl have been removed before printing (the Josephine W that Lisette is doing doesn't have the name)
    I would ask DPD if they could send you the rendering of the name with proper symbols superimposed in order you can replace them

      Thank you so much, Susana! That's a really fantastic idea, I might have to reach out to them and ask. I noticed that Lisette's doesn't have it, and some of the other kits don't either.

    I absolutely love it!! I, too, would find this a fascinating challenge! The number of colors may intimidate me in the kitting up process, but once I get a handle on that, I have the patience and don't mind confetti at all. Especially Jo Wall, she's my favorite artist... Love her style! Thank you so thank you Katie 😊💙

    What an amazing finish, Katie!!! When you said “marathon and not a sprint” I’m like heck yeah!! Look at this thing!!👀 In terms of how many colours are needed.. I think yes, for a canvas like this and the original artwork it does make sense for 220 colours. But in terms of if I would do it? I think I could never 😂 I do like confetti in some areas but not a whole canvas especially on this grand level. Good on you for thinking of getting another kit similar to this one. It would be SO interesting to see how kitting up 270 colours looks like!

      Thank you so much, Helen!! I mean, you could just do it in small sections and pretend like you're working on a confetti-heavy section of a more reasonable canvas 😂😂 But no, it's not for everyone, haha. I'm still debating on getting another! We'll see!

    It's absolutely gorgeous, but I agree that the rendering or the excessive number of colours or both do it a little bit of a disservice. The smaller winged horses, the top of the carrousel, the water, and the lamps are SO sharp and detailed and pretty... but there are other sections that are just so muddy! The larger horses that should be clearer seem a lot more pixelated than I would have expected, same with the bars and the main body of the carrousel. The buildings are huge compared to other clearer components, yet they are also very hazy. Definitely food for thought when ordering my giant custom piece.

    They are improving the symbols and the copyright is also in work to be removed. It was a condition by the management. But DPD solved this problem. But the quality is one of the best. The drills, the print and the way it´s been shipped. Also the stickers are such a blessing.
    I only order by them and I have about 4 JW paintings in my stash and some other own productions. Maybe try a newer work like "Three Graces, Diana, Pheonix, or maybe Starship" :)
    To answer a few questions:
    The company has no place for poured glue.
    She is tweaking the rendering and works hours and hours on the best result.
    More colors gives more depth and it´s also fun and something special. Not every company does that. DPD also cut down colors from 325 to 250.
    You could cut that legend and keep it by the area you paint. I use it as a backup. I put DSA on it and place some drills on it.
    The next ship arrives mid March and has some drillsets so the paintings can be printed again and packaged.
    They print the canvas in their place and if they are out of drillsets, they have wait for them to arrive and then those beautiful paintings can be printet, packed and shipped again.
    Also if you are interessted, maybe join their FB Group.

    I just got my kit from them the other day. I'm not going to open it yet because I already have two projects going and I'm in the process of setting up an office/craft room. Your completed canvas looks beautiful, and I agree with some of the points you made.
    For a lot of Josephine Wall art, there are so many small details that diamond painting rendering just can't capture, unless the canvas is HUGE. Some areas I think could have had more detail in the rendering (e.g. the carousel and the second pegasus/unicorn from the top). I also think the transition of colors in the sky could have been blended better. I didn't even realize there is a little girl on the first unicorn at the top until I saw the original artwork. The copyright in the bottom is an eyesore. I really hope it's not on all of the Josephine Wall kits they have.
    Overall though, it's really gorgeous and I loved following your progress throughout. Have you ever thought about trying Heaven and Earth Designs printed canvases?

    • @DiamondsandWashi
      @DiamondsandWashi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for watching and for your thoughts, Gabrielle! I completely agree with what you've shared about the blending, and the need for a large canvas to see the details. I really hope they get rid of the copyright at the bottom.
      I'm actually planning to try one of HAED's pre-printed canvases, AND hopefully one of their blank canvases, sometime this year! I know they carry Josephine Wall so I'll have to see what they have! Have you ever worked on one?

    From what I understand, the reason that the Josephine Wall canvases are double sided adhesive is that Diamond Painting Deutschland are creating the canvases there onsite in Germany. Due to the lack of copyright protection they cannot send to China for production. I know that some of the other kits from there are poured glue. I can't remember where I heard that information but that is what I remember.

    Hi Katie, so excited to see your postreview. Aren't you proud that you did it? YOU DID IT! I think that is so cool. You are the first one I've ever seen finishing one one these babies LOL...Thanks for your detailed post review. Loved watching your take on things. So fun to see someone who's actually having the same kind of experience, because this is a very unique project. I just discovered that the Sacré-coeur is also in the painting. WOW, I hadn't noticed that before. I love Paris. I totally agree with the quality of the drills - perfect - and although I prefer poured glue, I have no problems (so far) with their double sided adhesive (no rivers, excellent quality) but I have never tried to roll it up. So that helps. I lay it flat on my dinner table when I work on it and do hang it on hangers after that (yes - I have no dedicated crafting area either, and have (not so) little ones (7&9) running around so need to put it away...and also...it's our dinner table). I don't like the huge name in the bottom, but think it's impossible to replace yourself. And that legend...ha ha ha...why... I agree that you need to do other WIP's at the same time - as a breather and also to stay sane.... I personally think that this kind of rendering resembles the actual painting from Josephine very good. Just cherish the fact that you did this and admire it from a distance. Greetings from France, Lisette

And you're brave to be working on yours with kids running around too, even if they are older than mine, haha! And I almost pointed out Sacre-couer but the name kept slipping my mind and all I was thinking was Montmartre but I knew that wasn't right. I've traveled to France and been to Paris a couple of times, so this piece really had a special place in my heart. I hope I can travel there again someday!

    It’s a beautiful painting. I was actually thinking of ordering another Josephine wall and was told they had them licensed but honestly her name printed on the canvas and double sided tape are deal breakers for me. I had ordered a custom from a company before I knew about double sided tape of one of our Guinea pigs that had passed for my son for Christmas I never completed it for 2 reasons, it was only 30x30 cm and it was loaded with rivers from top to bottom diagonal . Also the printing of the symbols were hard to read the Guinea pig was entirely black and white with a pink nose and lips. The dark area the symbols weren’t printed in light colors , they were printed in dark. But the rivers and bubbles were the biggest problem was the rivers.

Before purchasing my first piece, I hear that there are several considerations. I am in the process of watching your other videos as I have not invested in anything yet. I hesitate to invest yet. But I am very intrigued. I am a scrapbooker. I am widowed & live by myself in a 3100 sq ft home. So I have the room. I really don’t like her name across the bottom left. I have not heard are round drills better than square drills??? So I am in the beginning of the beginning. I do love Josephine Wall’s art & I have lots of sketch books & journals of hers. Your work is absolutely gorgeous!!! I am very impressed.

I think I would feel lost with that many colors and kitting them all up - I wouldn't even know where to start, seems overwhelming. It is beautiful, however I was expecting more detail for the amount of colors there are. I guess as you said in your video, maybe it's the rendering or maybe it's just me liking more defined lines. I'm undecided about this. I agree with you about the water rendering, it's so pretty. It is boggling that this huge dp is double-sided adhesive, especially when they have smaller poured glue ones. This is gorgeous! I appreciate hearing all of your thoughts on this experience. I totally understand you being unhappy with having the name on the painting while also not wanting to try to fix it given the number of colors involved! The double sided adhesive aspect of this is part of what makes me hesitate. Back when I first started diamond painting, I ordered a bunch of DSA canvases from AliExpress and they were very hit or miss; some were perfect while others had massive bubbles spanning the canvas in multiple places, and I’m not sure how much of that was due to my handling of the canvas versus how it was packaged and the environmental factors. I’m also not sure if I have the patience for that amount of confetti; I’m doing my first Chuck Pinson next month, so maybe that will give me some insight into my tolerance level. I’ve really enjoyed coming along this journey with you!

      I totally hear you, Jayme! It can be such a gamble with DSA, and I wish I knew how much the problems with this one were my fault. The unboxing makes me cringe now, I just whipped back the cover, oof. But yes!! A Chuck Pinson will be a really great way to see how you feel about confetti.

    Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I feel the painting is lovely but, needs some hand rendering not all computer rendering. I think it get muddy in spots, like the trees. I feel more colors are usually better but, too many makes a blurry image. Once you understand double sided adhesive it isn't too bad to work with. I definitely like the sticky on double sided much better than poured glue. My largest painting was 107x50. It was not solid confetti. Kudos to you for completing this one with your sanity intact!

    HOLY SMOKES!!! That is truly MAGNIFICENT!
    It is quite stunning! The sheer massiveness of this project is most impressive.
    I appreciated hearing your thoughts and experiences. I think that after all of the work, I personally would be extremely disappointed in the artist's name signature being included in the final rendering...especially if it was not disclosed in the listing.
    As for the number of colors, I personally like to see 2 options. Similarly to how HAED does, a max color and a separate option for for a version with about half. Hmmm, I wonder if this finished piece's clarity would have benefited from fewer colors???
    Overall, the finished piece does reflect the the truly magical-ness of the original artwork done by Josephine.

    Wow, HUGE congratulations! This is an epic finish, and it really looks gorgeous! Amazing job! I completely agree with your assessment that more colors aren’t always better. When I test render images, I find that there becomes a point where the image quality begins to significantly decline. 40-60 colors does often seem to be the “sweet spot.” Occasionally more colors are better, but just as often not. Since designers are often in China and their companies elsewhere, I think these renderings are rarely tested in real life before they are sold. (Except maybe by DAC and Diamond Dotz.) And yes - why is anyone doing double sided at this point? Regardless - this is INCREDIBLE EPIC GORGEOUS! 😀

    I'm so glad I found your channel! Newish diamond painter here👋🏻! This kind of project is right up my crazytown alley! Just curious if you have tried Uniquely Yours Down Under before? They have licensing with Josephine Wall and quite a nice selection (with a poured glue option!... Although I believe the poured glue has less colors in it than the double sided adhesive option). Plus through May all her prints are 15% off! (I swear I'm not sponsored.lol). I too was looking at Diamond Painting Deutschland and I'm still considering it. But the shipping from Uniquely Yours to Canada was less than $18 CAD and had poured glue so I think that was my deciding factor. I got the Three Graces in the 90x120 size (😬) in square drills. My thoughts about the canvas are based on my introduction to Josephine Wall through HAED. They have kits in 88 or 220 (max color). I’m sorry to hear that you found some aspects of this painting disappointing, but I think it’s a positive sign that you want to do another. This many colors would kill me - you must have an endless amount of patience!
    Personally, I think there’s a point of diminishing returns regarding the number of colors used in a painting. For me, that’s around 50-60, depending on the painting. Any more and it starts looking quite muddy and pixelated (more so than usual!).

    • @DiamondsandWashi
      @DiamondsandWashi  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I really have to agree with you about the number of colors. I wonder if Josephine Wall's artwork might do okay with more than that threshold, but not as many as this. Say, 80-90 colors? I think HAED has a few charts with that many colors, and I have to say I'm tempted by those too.

    Call me crazy, but I love changing out colors and shapes as I go along. I am a huge fan of large canvases and, if an area isn't to my liking, either shape wise (i.e. things lining up like the poles in the merry go round) or their use of color, I change it out to what I like or what I think reflects the original artwork, even if I have to purchase drills to accomplish it. I guess you could say I like to add my own artistic touch. Without a doubt, I agree the name of the artist actually appearing on the canvas and at that size, takes away from the beauty of the picture. I would have just replaced the letters with colors to blend in with the water. I am super fussy and get a thrill out of putting my own stamp on it too! Oh, I love lots of colors and get bored with areas that are too large using the same color. Bring on more colors and large, square drill canvases! Congrats on finishing this masterpiece!!!

    My opinion, as I’m working on one too, is there should be a middle ground. I agree with you in the sky, the blossom and the carousel. The danger of so many colors is random pixels which blur in stead of define the image.
    I think the rendering DIYmoonshop does would be perfect (DAC not so much). I do think it’s only computer rendered. My image is a bit more defined to begin with, so the computer had less trouble with it I suppose, although I haven’t gotten to the seriously confetti part yet.
    I believe the reason it’s poured glue is that it’s produced in house in Germany for copyright reasons (why DAC is allowed to produce it in China is a mystery to me).
    I cut of the legend as soon as I started working on it, no need for it.
    I have no bubbles or rivers yet, but it’s been laying flat on my drawing table the whole time and I haven’t replaced the cover paper (don’t like parchment paper).

    I think spirit of flight is rendered better though. It almost looks like a draft version with her name on the canvas, I thought you put that there digitally😱😱. Did you contact the company? I think you’ll enjoy the other paintings😊 thank you for your review!

      Hi Laura! I have been in contact with the company and they've made some changes to this canvas, including the name. I'm actually planning to buy Spirit of Flight when it comes back in stock! I saw it finished in a FB group, and it looks amazing - I'm so glad to hear that you're loving yours!!

    WOW!! You finished. I am very intrigued by this type of project. I would like to try one of these at some point. As far as the rendering goes....I don't know what I think. I like parts of it and others, not so much. Is it this image specifically or all of them...due to so many colors and the computer rendering.

      I totally hear you, Mindy. I have very similar mixed feelings, and they change every time I go back and look at it. It was a fascinating project to try, for sure! I'd be so interested to see you work on one of these - you'll have to let me know if you decide to get one. Thanks, friend!

    Finally, but impressive that you finished it so fast. Really you are awsome! I was following you on instegramm and was so disapointed with the rendering of the Notredam, still bugs me. I overall hate paris, but this picture shows the true magic of it. Yes, detials got lost by bad rendering. I was thinking of buying this, but overall with the adhesive, not now. However I am happy with the colour blending and your feedback of the drills. And I will buy some of there new realises from dragons when I go to Germany next time to see my family.

    • @DiamondsandWashi
      @DiamondsandWashi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, thank you so much! You're so right, the Notre Dame came out really muddy. If you step back you can see the shading a little better, but still. I still wonder if the problems with the double-sided adhesive were my fault, but it's still more fickle than poured glue. Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy the other pieces you pick up!

    • @babsibunny88
      @babsibunny88 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DiamondsandWashiI dont think so. I work with both types of glue, even if I prefer poured glue. It is tricky working with double sided adhesive, but I think its getting harder with such large canvases. Everything over 60x40 or 50x50 cm seems hard to manage. So makes your work even more amazing. Love your videos, looking forward to your next one. :) greetings from France

    I absolutely love this canvas. Your explanation of drills and difficulty was clear. I saw this once when I was surfing dp companies but now I cannot find it. Do you know of a source other than the one you posted to purchase this painting? I may not be exactly ready for it but I want to have it on hand for when I am. It is stunningly beautiful. Hi Jacquelyn! Thank you so much for the kind words! I believe that HAED (Heaven and Earth Designs) carries a number of Josephine Wall’s pieces in their cross stitch charts section, which can be converted to diamond paintings on a blank canvas. I don’t know of any other companies that have this particular piece legally licensed. I hope that helps!

    I think it turned out really well! The DSA would probably hold me back a bit as I usually only order poured glue. Could you ask the company if they could send you a paper legend of the section without her name , so you would know what drills go where if you wanted to take out the name? Just a thought!
    I was also wondering if you could make a list of all the companies that you know of who license their diamond paintings from artists? Maybe make a quick vid about it or IG? So many companies have been changing to that now more than before (which is wonderful) and I think if someone made an updated list, it could really help! Not that I want to make more work for you or anything!😄
    Thanks for a great post review!

      Hi friend! I'm definitely thinking of reaching out to them to ask about a chart for the bottom. Just for a someday-project!
      You know, I'm definitely thinking of doing a video that covers that! I know that Jessica (Tiny Worlds of Wonder) did one a few months back and it was super helpful, so let me try to dig that up and send it to you as a starting point. I'm hoping to do some digging and get a better handle on the companies that have been switching over to having everything legally licensed (like Royal Diamond Painting and Staroar) and I'll definitely share that. I'm always open to suggestions for content, friend!

    • @nadine5731
      @nadine5731 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They switch already some signitures out of the paintings. It was a condition. The company also has no possabitlities to get poured glue on their facility. The best way is the DSA and I don´t mind it.

    First, if there was a Oscar for Diamond Painter of the Year, you should get it! But for the actual painting, it's kinda meh for me. The background is kinda blurry and I definitely think they could have dial back on the amount of colors, for me, its hard to focus on one section because of all the colors competing against each other, if that makes sense, lol. But you did a wonderful job, and I'm amazed that you finished it so quickly!

    Wow… talk about dedicated. What I don’t understand is if it is a legally licensed art to the company, then why is there a copy right symbol with Josephine walls name on the bottom left hand corner of the artwork.? I thought that usually happens to deter copying the picture as they wouldn’t be able to reproduce it due to the writing on the picture which is quite large. Not unless you had personally requested for it to be there. Just seemed odd to me.
