  • Thank you to Pete for sharing his story.

University Hospitals Birmingham Charity is launching a brand-new £2 million fundraising appeal to create the Birmingham Transplant Centre.
This will be a national centre of excellence for organ transplantation and will be funded in its entirety by UHB Charity. It will put patient care at the forefront of transplantation and will create a “one-stop-shop” for patients undergoing organ transplants. The new centre will bring all the specialist care to patients, including pre-transplant consultations, additional fitness classes before surgery, patient support groups, and rehabilitation classes after surgery
There are only two hospitals in the UK that carry out all four organ transplants: heart, lung, liver and kidney - the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and Freeman Hospital Newcastle. The organ transplant programme in Birmingham is nearly twice as large as Newcastle’s.
UHB Charity wants to bring all of the specialist care available to the patient, taking away a huge amount of stress and therefore speeding up recovery time. University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust will be able to offer even more transplants and therefore save even more lives.

You just told my husband, Mark’s true story. Thank you for sharing. We are waiting 3 weeks now. I don’t need to know how this all ends for my husband & family. All we want is a place to begin. Till transplant I love serving my husband. Mark makes it so easy. We’ve always had this version of love in sickness & in health. Pure love & joy. 27 years Feb 17th …5 great kids. Mark is 50 with heart attack June 26th 2022. He is level 2. Thank you for the thoughtfulness of speaking on video for yourself, family & charity. Kindly, Smith family 🫀❤️‍🩹

It's been just over a year now, since transplant. It all went very wrong just after transplant, with lots of bleeds and surgical issues requiring ECMO to heart and lung, RVAD, drains and various trips back to theatre for clot removal. My kidneys failed requiring haemo dialysis, which I still undergo 3 x per week... BUT, AND, it's a big BUT, I'm still here. Getting stronger day by day. There's been lots of issues, cardiac arrests, sceptic shock, sepsis, pneumonia, having a couple of ablation procedures. Clots, blockages and many in patient admissions to sort, resolve, and administer various IV antibiotics. On all of this, I can definitely say, trust in the treatment of the hospital and the team involved in your care. The Birmingham QE team are amazing... Good luck on your journey
