    No cardigans or trenchcoats for this 71-year-old. But I have dusted off, and worn this morning, my old denim jacket with leopard print velvet collar and cuffs. I sewed these on about 10 years ago, with leftover fabric after shortening the leopard print wide leg velvet pants. I might actually wear them together this season 😃

    I’m 63 & retired but I work 2 days a week at a ladies consignment shop. I always wear something current, flattering & fun on those days. Every single time, I’ll get at least 2 compliments just walking to the door,then several more during my 4 hour shift. So now, any time I go out, for any reason, I make an effort. I feel so much more confident & no where near invisible!

    The thing about dressing up - it's so TRUE! I just got a pair of burgundy mary janes from Rothy's and I decided to wear them on an errand run. These shoes started at least three conversations that day. They're SHOES... On my FEET! People see you no matter what you're wearing, so you may as well look cute. I've got my closet set with good pieces, and I know what I have in there, it takes me the same effort to put on the cute outfits as it does the grubby ones.

    Great tips! I work hybrid in NYC. I dress up for the office at least once a week. My coworkers don’t. They used to always ask where are you going? My response.. work! Now they’ve finally learned to stop asking me :) I dress for me not them. It makes me feel good. Besides it seems coworkers take me seriously if I’m dressed professionally rather than jeans and sneakers all the time. Ladies dress the way that works best for you whenever u feel like it :)

    I loved that Ted Talk! I noticed a few years ago when I wore a feminine dress people would always comment. I found it so inspiring that people noticed when I did not wear the frumpy clothes everywhere. It really changed my outlook on what I should be wearing and that people do notice. One year several my 17-22 year old college students started to dress like me! Hopefully we will inspire the next generation to dress well and not just wear their lounge around the house clothes when they go places. Plus, I found that businesses and people took me more seriously when I dressed well on planes, in hotels, stores, etc.

      @debbys.8935 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I definitely agree on the proportions but I don't think the mid thigh cardigan enhances any look. I'd say do a crop cardigan or as Anna said, go with a longer (mid shin) duster type cardigan.

    • @chantastique
      @chantastique 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      You need to exercise caution with cardigans. I don't look good in oversized blazers and cropped blazers don't look good with my waist line. My shoulders are broad and I can't get blazers to fit under my coats. Duster cardigans make me look bigger and pick up dirt from your shoes, they tend toward be sloppy. Cardigans that stop around your hips or thighs that are a plain color with good structure look good in blouses, tees, or tanks in cold climates. For me they easily fit under heavy coats. So for me cardigans are budget friendly, easy to clean, good for layering, and an easy third piece. There are cardigan styles that should come with a warning label, screaming "old lady vibe," but they're tweed blazers that say the same. Cardigans are versatile and deserve more respect.

    Thanks, Anna……I will watch that Ted Talk. I recently retired at 72 and play outside in Florida most mornings. It was easy for me to skip makeup and a put together outfit in the afternoon. I made a conscious decision recently to behave like a “grownup” and dress well, do my hair and makeup, regardless of my afternoon activities. It made me feel great and my husband noticed too. Compliments led to increased confidence. Confidence allows me to enjoy life and positivity with the people around me.

I feel better and always get compliments and interactions with people, and also get continued use out of my collection

    I remember growing up and my parents were from a different country but every day when they had to go whether it was the grocery store or department store or even to the bank or to the post office they always dressed up back in the 60s and the 50s with the suits and the dresses and I find that when I dress up on a daily basis, I feel so much better about myself. We have to take time for ourselves to make ourselves feel better and one of those ways is to dress up. Great video. I do love my cardigans, but sometimes I have to change them before I go out the door because, you’re right, the frump does seep in if you’re not careful.😂

    You are so right about the importance of dressing up (or at least dressing nicely) in improving our mood, even when nobody else is going to be there to see it! Quite a few years ago, I was at home for many months recovering from a surgery and wasn’t bothering with makeup, just wearing track pants, etc since I couldn’t walk and/or leave the house. After a few months I was really getting depressed even seeing myself in the mirror. I started to do my hair and makeup in the morning and dress a little better just for my own benefit at home all day, and it made a huge difference in cheering me up whenever I saw myself in the mirror thru the day looking good! Thanks for the reminder 😊

    Morning Anna, I have lost over 50lbs this past year, so I've had to recently replace my entire wardrobe. As a result, I'm actually excited to search my closet everyday for a feel good outfit to wear! I have a closet full of elevated basics that I can easily mix and match to create great outfits for daily wear. I do occasionally have my off days, but when I'm feeling off, I use the sandwich style outfit formula to elevate my mood. Matching my shoes to my top with a pair of contrasting pants or jeans does the trick every time! I'm really loving your gorgeous black lady jacket, the gold buttons give it a very expensive look! Thanks for another great video! Have a great day!

    Lockdown turned my office job into a permanent fully remote job and I make a point to get dressed every day, even if I'm not going anywhere. Not heels & a fancy dress, but a matching, coordinated looks like I put effort into my outfit. I find some days I change my clothes, like if I'm going for a lunch hike, then back to my outfit for the afternoon, but I equate that to someone who goes to the office gym at lunch is doing the same thing. Definitely helped my mood and overall mental health.

    I saw that TED Talk. It was wonderful. I agree…….dressing up changes your attitude. Let’s start a movement!
    Did you hear the piece on NPR about Dapper Wednesday? An Elementary school principal in New England had one little boy in the school who liked to wear a tie. This little boy was getting teased, so another little boy decided to be his friend and dress up too. Well the principal decided to that in solidarity, he would get on the band wagon. Now, the whole Elementary school has Dapper Wednesday! During the interview, the principal said that it has changed the kid’s behavior dramatically. On Dapper Wednesday, they put their best foot forward and that it has trickled into the other days of the week.
    Let’s start a movement………Fashionable Tuesday!

    I had a three color outfit I wore on a first date years ago - 2 colors, and the third color was a blend of the first two. Red,white, pink. Pink trousers, white top, red and white shoes, belt,purse. I felt this was a “ power” combo for me-and, yes, later I married the fella from that date.😊

    Could you maybe give some tips on how to style jackets/sweaters with long sleeve dresses? I always seem to look big and boxy with a jacket over a dress, especially if I’m wearing it with boots or a “heavier” shoe.
    About your last tip to get dressed up, I made a conscious effort a while ago to buy myself cute “home clothes” instead of just cute going out clothes and it has been a great change!

      I agree about the 'home clothes'! I call mine 'at-home clothes'. The concept really solidified for me during the pandemic. Why look bad when you can look good? Looking good can be just as comfortable.

    Hi Anna I love the beginning of this video , because I don’t know how many times I have gotten ready to go out and realized I had gotten something on me. Yesterday , on the way to mass , I was feeling out my check for the basket in the car, and I have an old fashioned cartridge pen and it leaked all over my hands. The only thing that takes it off your skin is bleach, so I went through Mass with ink on my hands..oh well 😂. Your videos never disappoint. I do dress up every Sunday, although our Catholic Church is very laid back, no kneelers, and a lot of people wear shorts. It is definitely my dress up day and I usually get compliments in my outfit. It has been so hot here that everyday is usually shorts and a tank or tee. I will look forward to fall just to be able to wear a little more elevated style. You look great and love you are getting more sponsored videos. The clothes were really nice. You look good in everything. ❤❤❤

    Like my ex husband used to say, "women dress for other women, not us men", he said most the trends men do NOT like.

    He said men like women in anything that shows their figure off and could care less with anything else.

    This is another great video, Anna. I love the pieces you highlighted. I think it's important to dress "intentionally" for our days. It may not be "dressed up", but it shows you put some thought into your outfit rather than throwing on a t-shirt and jeans. This morning, I wore a cotton top and linen pants to our very casual church, but I coordinated the belt and the sandals, and it really elevated the look. Thank you for your tips!

    Great tips, and also being in Florida (sarasota) we don’t get to do all the layering that go with fall, but a thin inner layer with a heavier top layer works more often than I would have thought. I still wear all my different boots and belts and jackets most of the time except for the summer…which we’ve had a blistering one this year!

    hey Anna, I enjoyed this video, I hit subscribe. I too live in a hot climate it can be 90 degrees well into October, so I'm on the lookout for transitional style. As far as low shaft boots, I'm going to hold on the pair I've had for 10 yrs. but keep them out of rotation this fall-winter. I'm a street style person, the burden of being cool : ) I like to wear slouchy tees and tops with crop jackets and vests. To carve out a faux waist from my long torso and not very trim middle.
    Anyhow even if my style isn't as elegant as yours, you give good content on proportion and color complement. The tip on how to wear slouchy v structure bags was really good. One last q? do you have any leads on comfortable pointy toe shoes. I do enjoy hi-lo looks, like a pointy shoe with jogger-trouser bottoms.

    Anna, I saw that Ted Talk! It was great! If I was to choose a decade, I would pick the 1940's. I love the styles from that era. I have been much more intentional in styling my outfits over the last few years and I truly feel so much better about myself. The great thing is, that I do it for me. If someone compliments my outfit, that is icing on the cake, but I walk taller and feel more self confident when I like how I am presenting myself to the world.

    I feel like everyone actually updates their wardrobes in the fall? For me, the frump is more a late winter/ early spring kind of thing, when it's so cold or gross outside, you don't particularly care what you look like. I usually do a mini closet clean-out and pick up new warmer pieces in the fall, to have something nice and new through the holidays.
    This year I'm not going to be super concerned about it, but I'm so looking forward to updating my wardrobe again next year, and all the new holiday looks!

    I'm getting back into shape since my sloth time during covid. I'm going to take your advice regarding dressing up. I really don't have dressy, high end clothes, but I will wear something other than sweats.
    Maybe nice slacks and my cashmere sweaters this fall and winter. When I hit
    my goal weight I'll look around for pencil skirts. Thank you from Northeast Florida.
