By the time the DMC12 left Dunmurray there were 2 pages of mechanical retrofits alone! As for the body, the front/rear fascias never fit correctly as their mounting systems were ill conceived costing John Z a small fortune in man hours to correct. I made a special pry bar in the shape of a P trap to lift the center of the front fascia up by bending the metal panel under it. There were also many a cracked front fender so to that end fabricating a new DMC13 would be better in some alloy with a stainless wrap. If I remember correctly there were horrendous reception problems with the stereos in the DMC12 on account of static caused by bare metal at speed. Also, you Foose Folk need to add a baby bump to that hood so the rear flippin tire can actually be stowed. And don't let any of that Lotus epoxy-coated-buffoonery influence the suspension design for godsakes.
I actually really like the original. It resembles 80`s very well. The look of original is dfinately timeless. I do feel like original looks better. This drawing looks like a knock off that was tuned somewhere in the garage.

That is the design, whether we like it or not, and it is Iconic, and a permanent part of Automotive History.
I was thinking the same thing, the front kinda reminds of a 90’s American family car Also at least it looks better than the west cost customs attempt which flopped big time
I've always thought that the Delorean DMC-12 looks like the 1978 Lancia Montecarlo's bigger brother, especially when viewed from the side, the distinct black nose and similar rear end.
The icon of the 80's suddenly looks like a souped up GM/Mopar collaboration from the 70's. Front from Buick Regal, and a rear from Dodge Challenger. Not at all the futuristic UFO it originated. Only thing DMC-12 needs updating is the mechanics, and maybe brighter lights, like a double LED bar at the front and "higher resolution" in the back, meaning smaller cubes, that could act directly with the brake pressure, and travelling indicators. Also the side window opening needs to be bigger. By changing the engine layout to transverse mid + hybrid, instead of longitudal rear, you could move the rear axle back and make it AWD, widen the door and tilt the B-pilar so it would either match to the A-pilar, or disappear completely. Also ditch the Stainless for pure carbon fiber composite. This material change smoothens all the sharp corners, brings everything up to 2020's, while maintainig the original idea to the fullest. That's how you bring the DeLorean back to the future. You dragged it back to the 1968.

Interesting re-envisioning of the DMC. I totally understand Chips POV in making some of the lines flow better, and I really think that's a big challenge for the DeLorean. What the DMC should have had for the front was pop-up headlights to really compliment the wedge design. This Foose rendering took what was cool away from the DeLorean. I usually love his redesigns but not this one. Nothing about this rendering makes any sense to me and the front is horrible. As much as I love Chip Foose, this is rare for me to admit but, you got this one wrong Chip.
Same thing chip sorry to say. I love the car exactly the way it originally was built. Beautiful in every way on its own. Please just don't ruin the car thank you
I'm a big fan of Foose but this redesign isn't one of his best. The design section of a Delorean, especially the tail lights are iconic and what gives it its 80s cool.
I thought this was going to be a contemporary version. To that end I don’t think it needs very many changes. It reminds me of the Mustang and how even though they’ve been making them for like 60 years you can always tell its a Mustang, this should still be obviously a Delorean. I think his design is a huge miss. The car just needs the smallest tweaks, probably lowering it, and it would be awesome as an all electric.
As a Delorean owner and a Chip Foose fan, I have to disagree with Chip. You can't redraw a car 40 years old and try and make it work. This was an amazing design for 1981.
He should of made more than one sketch. He's trying to show the whole front end and rear end in 1 pic. That is why it looks weird. When can you see the whole front end and whole rear end when looking at a car.
the reason he went with the Stainless steel is because the panels if damaged could easily be removed and another put on with out any work done to it such as having to paint it. he wanted to make a car that was built to last. Something the car makers of today dont want to do. have it for a few years and get another car. I dont think so
The design can stay the same forever except for a few minor things. One being GET RID OF THOSE LOUVERS (those slots covering the back window). They are dated, ugly and obscure your vision out of the rear.
Design is subjective. I own and love every angle of my 83, that said, I always appreciate the fun and curiosity of reimagining. Very cool! Only thing I'd personally change would be engine, suspension, and modernize the interior slightly. The original exterior design is arguably one of the only things most car folks would agree Delorean got 110% right. Naturally, those who disagee hate everything about the car since "it dernt ger fast." I agree somewhat about the car's fame. If it weren't for BTTF, it wouldn't be a movie star, but it would be every bit as iconic as other flashy 80's symbols of excess like the Testarossa and Countach.
Delorean purposely chose the stainless for lasting durability and design, it kinda upset me that Foose said Delorean was being cheap and had to cut cost on not painting it and not having to have a paint shop....99.9% of us know thats bs......and to actually show an angled view of a vehicle that shows the front and the rear??....I thought only 4th graders drew in that perspective.
I respect your work, but the front end restyle looks like a Renault Alpine, and the rear like something AMC would have done for the Javelin. Not your best effort. That said, I don't think the design of the DMC-12 is without fault. IMO, it is just about the most milquetoast iteration of the 60s and 70s "Atomic Doorstop" design aesthetic, and the powertrain is laughably weak.
Even Chip can’t make a car that everyone loves. In this case I’m not 100 percent with all his changes but it’s an interesting revision. Maybe I like the original too much.
Nooo Chip! I'm a big fan of your work but I can't get on with that front end. It looks like a late 80s/early 90s Mustang. I like the rear lights though 😎
Sorry Chip but from what angle can I see the front headlights and tail lights at the same time? Is this a front 3/4 view or a rear 3/4 view? I’m so confused 🥴😂😂
I used to think I could draw cars but when I showed the finished work to my wife, she would always say it looked twisted. Looking at this, I can see what she meant.
hmm, I have been restoring my Delorean for almost 20 years now (sad I know). I was hoping for some cool design ideas to make her a little different. I think Chip is super talented, but this fell flat with me.... Looks like the front and back of an 80's Dodge Omni.
I don’t like it Chip , like taking a classic Porsche and putting a beetle rear windscreen in, you don’t get it right all the time but think your a true talent
My Navy division officer bought a new DeLorean back in the day. He waited 9 months for delivery, he drove it for a week and it spent the next year in and out of the dealer shop for "required testing, maintenance and upgrades", always scheduled during our at sea periods... of course. He sold it 10 years later for twice what he paid for it... (not considering all the fixes, add-ons, upgrading which all had "Co-Pay's") And when I drove it once, it was a pig... a heavy pig. I had a 65 Mustang with a very tired six and 3 speed, and by that scale it was not a pig. Looked like a pig but drove like an old cat, smooth and slow. The DeLorean felt claustrophobic, like being in a safe... the kind you put all your loot in. My DO's wife refused to ride in it... she said it reminded her of a casket... the kind they bury you in. How about drawing a upsized Cadillac Escalade version of the Chevy HHR style? Now that would be ART, Foose kind of ART. Thanks Chip!
Final product looks like a 90's American Ford Escort redesigned front and a 240z redesigned rear. 🤔 The DMC-12 was a quintessential 80's car in the 80's from the 80's.... The redsigned one barely rubs the 90's in the authentic way....
2021 is looking up for you, Hagerty. You are rapidly becoming my favorite channel. Can wait for Thursday with Jason. I think thats gonna seal the deal.
I had an architecture professor that taught a similar drawing technique for interior and exterior elevation drawings. He also spoke about adding time as a dimension.
I own a DeLorean DMC-12 and Personally I wouldn't change a single design aspect of the DeLorean DMC-12, exterior or interior. I don't not think it was dated when it came out and it still stands out as a beautiful car today, especially the interior was so clean and simple it was really ahead of it's time. I remember hearing John DeLorean say in an interview, "I wanted the interior to still look good 40 years from now. " And it does. Mechanically and electronically the car is and has always been a nightmare. I bought my car with 6k original mike's on it and the car show show condition. Sadly that's not the case anymore. The car has never run in any real way. It's a giant, expensive paperweight that breaks my heart every day I see it. I've sent the car out to be fix and had it come back more damaged, I spent my saving getting it relates by the DeLorean dealership in Southern California and the car. Dies before I could get it home and so many things were just done wrong got he car and they refuse to take any ownership of responsibility. So basically I gave them my life savings so they could make my car even worse. It's so depressing. I keep promising my nephew I'll pick him up from school in it and I can't. I've missed out on special event because I didn't have my car. It's so depressing. My dream car has been nothing but a nightmare.
What's upsetting is how our government set him up in the drug sting. He was trying to get money to save his company. Our government put a stop to it. He was a smart man. He did a lot for PONTIAC. Great video
While it was an interesting thought experiment, there's one problem with your design, Chip... The back edge of the door won't accommodate the window rolling down, and you didn't put in the "mini, inset window" into the full window to deal with that.
My father in law was a product manager for DMC , he was there for the foundations of the factory being laid into the ground until it closed. In its time it was a high tech factory with robot type moving platforms believe it or not ,The biggest mistake was how quickly the car went from designed to manufacture, I think it was 2 years which is crazy , most probably would be around 5 to 10 years 🤔.. the factory was also built in the time of the “troubles”situation in Ireland and it got fire bombed destroying plans and other important information, but amazingly both sides of these factions worked under the same roof without issue..it has a very interesting history, Back to the future film appearance was just part of it.
Chip your the best! The original car should stay in the past like everyone that thinks it looks great for whatever reason. Maybe they like it because it takes them back to a simpler time, but I think your subtle changes are cool and clean. I’m sure you’d have a big block with tons of power in it.
Being able to see the front and back at the same time looks crazy. Lol. The passenger side must be like 3 or 4 feet longer than the driver side. But somehow with all that going on Chip still made the car look cool. He has got mad skills.
He didn't make the original design any better, but I enjoyed the video. I think an important point that didn't get acknowledged here is that the actual car had to comply dozens if not hundreds of safety regulations, some desing choices may have been implemented for that reason only.
The only change I agree with is outline of door opening... to more mimic all the straight lines the rest of the body has. ... Front chin needs to be brought down and level (in stainless) with a black air dam.( reminiscent of IMSA trans am cars) Whole front facia lowered 3-4cm. The lights changed to led, recessed but with clear aero covers. Tail left flat but add a ground effects lower. Led taillights kept in same configuration but simple 4 rectangular arrangement.

He should of made more than one sketch. He's trying to show the whole front end and rear end in 1 pic. That is why it looks weird. When can you see the whole front end and whole rear end when looking at a car.
If l had a 80s Delorean l would paint the rubber ends a much closer color to the stainless steel. Maybe buff the steel to mirror.
the reason he went with the Stainless steel is because the panels if damaged could easily be removed and another put on with out any work done to it such as having to paint it. he wanted to make a car that was built to last. Something the car makers of today dont want to do. have it for a few years and get another car. I dont think so
I prefer the original design. Both the car and the movie actually made each other.
Naturally, those who disagee hate everything about the car since "it dernt ger fast."
I agree somewhat about the car's fame.
This video series with Chip is phenomenal. I could watch this series for years to come.
It’s perfect in its original form..
It's Iconic and I like it the way it is. You can't update the design and bring it into the future. That's already been done. Thanks Doc!
Sorry Chip but from what angle can I see the front headlights and tail lights at the same time? Is this a front 3/4 view or a rear 3/4 view? I’m so confused 🥴😂😂
Coolest car to come out of the 80s
Great job Chip. You turned a DeLorean into a J-car Cavalier. Some cars were never meant to be approved upon.
I've seen some painted with a tint, and they look great...
I used to think I could draw cars but when I showed the finished work to my wife, she would always say it looked twisted. Looking at this, I can see what she meant.
I like the way you broke the lines of the original project and gave this timeless car a new look...Marc from Brazil....
Also front looks like an old VW Jetta now... lol.
Renault Fuego came to my mind
@@cariusx haha... Chip bats a .999 usually.
cariusx I also got that, as well as a Sterling. His new front looks super generic 80's as does the tail lights. The original is so much better
looks like a ford
hmm, I have been restoring my Delorean for almost 20 years now (sad I know). I was hoping for some cool design ideas to make her a little different. I think Chip is super talented, but this fell flat with me.... Looks like the front and back of an 80's Dodge Omni.
All other cars I'we seen built and painted by you look amazing. This one however, was better in original. Sorry 🙏
Let me guess. It involves him putting on some Foose rims.
Nope. Stuck with the original style, just made them too large.
and look like a 21 Y.O PIMP RIDE and lower the car to the ground.... just dreadfull
and a stripe line at the side.. With the big stripe guy that can do stripes real straight !
what a hideous design lol
I wish I could go back to 1955 and stop Chip from drawing this dreadful picture :-(
You would need a time machine.
Heh, I was thinking the rear looked like a 300zx
@@dumahim and it kind of does. Either way, very Nissan by design.
2021 is looking up for you, Hagerty. You are rapidly becoming my favorite channel. Can wait for Thursday with Jason. I think thats gonna seal the deal.
@David w haha neither just a a wishful bromance for Jason Cammisa haha
And very appreciative of the new shows by Hagerty
My favo car since the day it came out.
I had an architecture professor that taught a similar drawing technique for interior and exterior elevation drawings. He also spoke about adding time as a dimension.
The graduated circle template is so cool old school.
Foose, stop talking trash about the Delorean!! And keep drawing your expected design that looks like all your cars.
Great video
A new Delorean that has an actual reliable engine and something that won’t try to lock you in would be ideal
Interesting drawing that gives us a side view and 3/4 front and rears at the same time.
I hope someday somebody revive this brand and design a new DMC
I prefer the orginal chip. I think all the problems are mechanical, not fashion
Great Scott! This isn't the best work I've seen from Biff Foose.
While it was an interesting thought experiment, there's one problem with your design, Chip... The back edge of the door won't accommodate the window rolling down, and you didn't put in the "mini, inset window" into the full window to deal with that.
I’m happy to see chip foose doing what he loves!
Understanding the original design as well as respecting the original designer using that as a tool to make an improvement. NOICE👌
Chip your the best! The original car should stay in the past like everyone that thinks it looks great for whatever reason. Maybe they like it because it takes them back to a simpler time, but I think your subtle changes are cool and clean. I’m sure you’d have a big block with tons of power in it.
The big question is,
Will It Do 88 mph ?
🚬👓...
It's like a mullet , you cant erase it , it's part of of our history .
That's what's fun about doing a drawing! You can envision whatever you want with no regulator oversight! 😀
@@Hagerty That's a fair point. :)
He's basically taken the best parts of the car and made a generic 1980s front and rear end.
1990s generic, no even todays.
I’d love to see this car come to life
The only change I agree with is outline of door opening... to more mimic all the straight lines the rest of the body has.
Cool. But I'm not a fan of the front end treatment.
