I bought the Noire a couple of months ago on a whim and that DCA had a 10th anniversary offer for a free cable upgrade to a Vivo cable if you bought directly from them. Great deal! I’m revisiting this review because I want to add some observations to the discussion. This is my 2nd DCA headphone. I also own an Ether CX. I run the Noire without filters but let’s attribute that to age as I am much older than you. What amazes me the most about them is the well defined image placement. They don’t sound like a closed back and the soundstage is impressive. It’s not the widest but it’s deep with good height. The Ether CX is a more neutral headphone but the Noire is more “real world “. One thing not pointed out is that they, along with the Ether CX, require current to really shine. Even though they’re designed for portability, they need power to really shine. Running them balanced is almost a necessity! I would also point out that the stock cable is a choking point. I have all of the DCA cables and the Dummer is the worst performing by far IMO. Both the Dum (no longer offered) & the Vivo cables outperform it in every aspect. It’s immediately noticeable & not even close! I haven’t heard everything, but the Noire should easily be in the discussion for best closed back under $1k.

It is the same headphone, only difference are the pads- also the pads are designed to be removable for a certain number of times. It is special glue that Dan use. Easy to convert a 2 closed to noir. Just order the pads that you want.
Bought a pair of Aeon 2 Noire when the were first introduced for an introduction price of $765. I changed out the stock pads for a pair of Dekoni Aeon leather pads. The Dekoni pads keeps their shape better and the foam inside doesn't rotate. Soundwise the Aeon 2 Noire with the Dekoni leather pads sound like the standard Aeon 2 Closed with slightly less treble and little bit more bass. Hate the glossy finish one the earcups.
This is really the only closed back above 500 bucks or so that I thought was pretty decent considering what it is. Elegia is just a disappointment, and beyond this price range you're looking at the crazy price stuff like VC and Stellia
I wonder about the Focal Celestee, though. Were you able to try the Elegia? I am asking as in my region we are in full lockdown and shops have been closed for months, I am unable to test any headphones, and wont be able for some time...
I did try the Elegia and it just overall didn't stack up to its price IMO. I don't really review anymore so chances are very low I'll hear the newer Focals
i tried all, elegia, celestee and noire, based on memory here it goes: elegia nothing special, weak bass, ok mid, sometimes shrill highs. ok stage celestee more balanced then elegia, touch more bass, no problem with hotly mastered songs, highs lower abit than elegia. stage touch bigger than elegia noire, bass ard same level as celestee, mid is clearer, high more than celestee but without anyweird peak. you can hear high range of the vocal echoing throughout. biggest stage of all three aeon 2c is like dms said more midrange focused version of noire noire is the one i choose given these 3. add to that the ability to insert tuning pad. only thing is i come from denon biodyna, all these planars sound weak in dynamics
When I had the Aeon 2 Closed, I also had to use the white felt. It helped on the top end, and made the sound much fuller, as I found it super thin without any inserts. However, I wouldn't describe the headphone as mid range focus like you did. The mids were quite recessed in my opinion.
Looking forward to seeing your review on Aeon RT and its position on your tier list. $500 compared to the Noire’s $900 is quite a difference!!! Thats a pretty nice power washer…
I own the peasant variant. The RT closed. Sounds great to me. Personally I dont really hear problems in dynamics. Bass is quite punchy and well textured. Stage is above average.
Thanks for the review. I was really pleased by Aeon Flow Open (first version) without dampening back in a while, but ended up buying Ananda's as the best sounding headphones under 1k imo. Anyways, it will be interesting about to hear about other models from Dan Clark
I own the Aeon X open. They are great. Not as open sounding as most other open backs. The highs are slightly rolled off. Not a ton though. Just enough to let you listen for hours without becoming fatiguing.
Loved the way you were justifying buying the Noir, I mean you owe it to yourself to your listeners, it’s a must have as a bench mark for closed bass headphones, it’s not like it’s about you. We all have the same conversations, you will be buying these just give in now DMS 🙂
I picked up a pair of Drop x Aeon Xs when Drop dropped them. I really like them. Not an "exciting" headphone, but "refined" (which I think you say in your review). It's a headphone that at first listening doesn't attract any attention to anything it's presenting, but the more I listen to them, the more I appreciate and enjoy them. They are made well, look good, are compact, and super comfortable. The newer design folding yoke is nice, as is the small case. They can use some power to drive well. The glued on pads are a bummer. The cables are nice, while the special cup connector is of good quality, it introduces compatibility issues. I haven't experimented with the tuning pads. I've just left the single white one in.
Have you ever tried the Kennerton Magni? I'm asking because you mentioned using the Noir as reference and the Magni has been considered for a similar role, at a similar price.
I’m owning a magni right now and have listened to aeon2 from a show for an half hour, and I think magni out performed aeon2 on technical performance, and the tuning of magni also feels more neutral and cleaner compare to aeon2. Overall I think magni is the superior headphone unless you prefer a more bassy and warm tone. But of course the aeon2 is so comfortable that I almost want to buy one just because of that.
I have the Aeon Closed RT and love them. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on how those compare as the RT is the more affordable and accessible pair. Especially when they go on sale.
I'm considering getting a pair of these but I don't know if I can handle the responsibility of the tuning filters. Do use the same filter all the time or do you switch them around?
@@jimstewart2242 I’ve been using the 1 notch white filter that came installed since it arrived last month. But I’ve just switched over to the 2 notch white filter today, I’ve not done any critical comparisons yet
Given how comfortable the Ether 2 is, I definitely believe these are thee most comfortable headphone you've used. DCA is _really_ good at making comfortable headphones.
Really satisfied with my Aeon 2 Closed. Got the Dekoni leather pads which improved the comfort even further. Only drawback is the incompatibility with tube amps due to the very low impedance. Worth to mention as well is that the paint on the gimbals peeled of but DCA exchanges them if it happens to you as it is a known manufacturing issue. I just got some matt black car paint and repainted them myself. Never going to sell them anyway 😊
Excellent review. Question, which of the white dampening pads are you using? It comes with two. Also, just FYI, although it's not ideal that the pads are glued in, the adhesive is a special adhesive meant to allow removal and reuse of the pads. It's actually very easy to replace a pad on these. I own the Aeon 2C but I replaced the pads with the perforated pads from the Noir and I love the sound. I wonder what the frequency graph looks like. It might come very close to the Noir's.
I know it's a strange question but how would you rate a closed back like the Noir against a IEm like the Kinera Nanna? I need something with isolation but I'm not sure where to spend my money.
I’m making the same decision. I bought the Celestee but I’m not in love with it and it lets a lot of sound bleed. Even at moderately low volumes. Now I’m wondering if I should just get a quality iem
I just need the second hand prices to drop on the Noir to justify replacing my Focal Elegias that I picked up for $400 with a balanced cable... I think I prefer planars thanks to their image/instrument separation.
@@chrisselner5005 overall I’m really enjoying it. Super comfortable for me (I’ve worn it 12+ hours excluding food/bathroom breaks with ease). The punchy/ dynamic characteristic is great, and doesn’t make me want to lower the volume, as some have experienced. Don’t think it was worth $900, but at it’s used prices, it is top notch for a closed back. Especially with some EQ to balance it’s frequency, while retaining the mid-forward characteristic. If the song is well mixed or well recorded, with a little EQ, any genre is awesome.
Do you think you will be able to review the DCA Stealth? My opinion on the Aeon line matches yours exactly and a review from you regarding the Stealth is something I am really looking forward to.
With regards to the Audeze suspension strap, I emailed Audeze about this within 2 weeks of owning the LCD-X and they sent me a shorter leather strap that gives plenty of room between the strap and the metal.
Just to provide some balance, just gotta say, I love the Hirose connectors they use on the headphones; seem way nicer than jacks - but from the standpoint of sourcing cables etc it’s definitely less convenient.
@@JeffJacquesmd Yea I’ve made them before as well, when I sold cables - unlike other connectors of this type like Lemo, these are quite cheap, and nicely made... but a bitch to solder ;P
Hey DMS, got the opportunity to pick up a Focal Clear for about 950 bucks here in germany... But those Aeon Noirs sound really appealing, having the sound characteristics I was kind of looking for. Now the Focals also being a bit warm but as a open back dynamic... which one would you recommend at the given price point? Which is the better overall package? Thx!
I’m looking for a closed back headphone to go with my Hugo2. Currently I have the HE500, which I love (and you mentioned). Which one is closer in sound?
Are the Aeon Noire a fitting closed back headphone for gaming? (mostly shooter, need to hear those footsteps) But still want to enjoy music,... with them.
Aeon RT closed vs Aeon 2 closed (and noir): similar comfort. Aeon RT is a fantastic deal, Aeon 2 is a tier above, has better separation and better low extension. Aeon 2 folds if that's useful to you. I'd say both are good but at the Aeon 2 price I'd strongly consider the Ether CX instead, the Ether CX is less neutral but more enjoyable for me. Between the Aeon 2 and the Noir I'd get the latter, again because the Noir tuning is more enjoyable. The bass is fucking wonderful, not just for songs like 99 Problems, but they really do wonderful things for a bass guitar (Aqualung, Radar Love). Between the Aeon Noir and Ether CX, I'd still get the Ether CX, but it's very close. Between any of the above and the Aeon RT, it's up to you. I will say both are worth the money that's charged. The DUMMER cable isn't...great. There's microphonics and although I'm not a cable-phile (I think it's mostly garbage) microphonics on heavily amplified planars do NOT sound good. I was lucky enough to get a VIVO cable when I purchased one of these as a bundle, and while it's not worth the $200 asking price, it saved me the trouble of making a custom cable (since the connector isn't standard) and I'd say it's a requirement. All of them need a decent chunk of clean power to be worth the asking price, so factor that in if you don't have it already.
I'm pretty sure they are the same headphone driver wise. Just the difference of the perforated pads. Also... you can very easily mod them to use a 3.5 termination.
How about the power requirements? I am considering the Aeon, and I definitely want to use it on the go. I have a HIby R5 and it produces quite a bit of power, but I know the Aeons are hard(ish) to drive. Thanks
Recently sold my A2C. It is unfortunate because I really enjoyed the headphone it was unique in it's comfort and build, but the pads kept warping on me and I could see if I wanted to use them more often I would get destroyed on $60 pad replacements.
Please, please check out the Focal Celestee - need it for a purchase decision. I've respected your read on headphones ever since your negative take on the Philips X2HR - I bought one anyway ( caught the Zeos hype train) and found out what you were talking about.
The X2HRs are so good with Dekoni microsuedes. It'll never be a detail or resolution monster but it works so much better leaning into the warmth of the bass and using suedes to smooth out the highs. I was using them exclusively for gaming but now love them for music. So "hypetrain" my hemroids. If you're going to spend money on a product take 10 minutes to review return policies and stop leaning on or blaming other reviewers for your purchases.
Please, compare with the Focal Celestee! And s video about the best Closed Back headphones under 1000$ would be awesome. I am having many difficulties to find closed back under that price that can be bought in EU (or add 24% on taxes alone, apart from import fees). Thank you for this review, though
@@johnellison3173 i find 3mm wool felt works well, also believe it or not toilet paper, you can experiment with different thickness, and it can often help with removing sibilance and sharp treble.it works wonders on DT990 and other sibilant headphones.
@@chefsteve8381 yes ive tried those cheap foam inserts off ebay in various thicknesses and 2-ply kitchen roll works really well also. But ill try some wool felt as you have suggested as I like to experiment with little tweaks like this on sibilant headphones.
How do both of these compare to the Aeon RT/Aeon Closed X (Drop version of RT)? The RT is only $500 compared to the $900 of the Aeon 2 and Noire, so I assume there'd be a difference, but is it worth paying an extra $400 for?
@@NeapolitanApe That is 100% incorrect. If you want to bring up the law of diminishing returns, it'd be more like $20. When it comes to headphones, especially audiophile headphones, no one gives a rat's ass about the law of diminishing returns. Also, considering that he just made a video regarding my exact question, I was correct in buying the Aeon RT. I just wish I waited until last week to do it so I could have gotten $120 off for the black friday Drop sale.
@@NeapolitanApe I don't think you can go wrong with either of them. I'm trying to stick to "midfi" for now, but if my speakers I'm ordering today change my mind, then I might just need to get myself some Focals or maybe even bring out the big bucks for Abyss headphones.
Hey DMS, can you please briefly say why you like the Noire more than Verite Closed? Is the detail retrieval diff between them huge? I was really determined to save up for the twice as expensive VC, but I'm quite surprised from your review in a good way. Would you say I'll be okay with the 3K peak if, for example, I barely tolerate the 560s treble that is slightly over the Harman curve?
The verite-closed would likely be more to your tuning preferences if you use the microsuede pads. Comfort is a huge win on the Aeon Noire and it’s just really well balanced. I find the treble to be easily tolerable as long as I use the damping insert.
@@DMS3TV Thanks for the info! One more thing you didn't mention - does inserting the white felt reduce the detail retrieval like other reviewers mentioned as a weakness? How do they compete with the bass kings Fostex X00 Ebony?
@DMS What would be the other closed backs under 1k for elevated, denfined and punchy bass, you didn´t mention at 11:55? Maybe Meze 99 classics, Denon AH-D xxxx, Beyer t5p, Dt 1770 pro, Nightowl, Argon? i sold my 99 classics and the fidelio x2 in the past and do own the zeus.
Kind of surprised since you've said you're not a fan of Harman target. Anyway, it would be super cool to do a set of measurements with the different damping materials, it would certainly be a good reference for people looking at these headphones.
@@DMS3TV Maybe it's because part of the fun of headphones is different sound signatures. I am not a Harman fan either, but still enjoy a few pairs of more bassy headphones from time to time.

would you recommend this more than the Audeze LCD 2c?
If the head strap is skidding you can just tighten the screw on the inside, and it will increase the clamp pressure on the metal frame.
Ordered these yesterday. Glad to see such a positive review!
I don't really review anymore so chances are very low I'll hear the newer Focals
i tried all, elegia, celestee and noire, based on memory here it goes:
elegia nothing special, weak bass, ok mid, sometimes shrill highs. ok stage
celestee more balanced then elegia, touch more bass, no problem with hotly mastered songs, highs lower abit than elegia. stage touch bigger than elegia
noire, bass ard same level as celestee, mid is clearer, high more than celestee but without anyweird peak. you can hear high range of the vocal echoing throughout. biggest stage of all three
aeon 2c is like dms said more midrange focused version of noire
noire is the one i choose given these 3. add to that the ability to insert tuning pad.
only thing is i come from denon biodyna, all these planars sound weak in dynamics
Yes, it would be great if you reviewed the lower priced Aeon RT closed and open - and/or the Drop versions of them.
When I had the Aeon 2 Closed, I also had to use the white felt. It helped on the top end, and made the sound much fuller, as I found it super thin without any inserts. However, I wouldn't describe the headphone as mid range focus like you did. The mids were quite recessed in my opinion.
The noire are my next set of cans for sure. I think they'll be my last stepping stone between my hd650s and the empyrean which is my endgame.
Another great video! #MomApproved❤️🍊
Looking forward to seeing your review on Aeon RT and its position on your tier list. $500 compared to the Noire’s $900 is quite a difference!!! Thats a pretty nice power washer…
I only paid $810 😎
I own the peasant variant. The RT closed. Sounds great to me. Personally I dont really hear problems in dynamics. Bass is quite punchy and well textured. Stage is above average.
What amp/dac do you have to power your aeon rt?
Thanks for the review. I was really pleased by Aeon Flow Open (first version) without dampening back in a while, but ended up buying Ananda's as the best sounding headphones under 1k imo. Anyways, it will be interesting about to hear about other models from Dan Clark
dude buy the headphones.. they are a benchmark tool.. noone can say it is too much... I approve this purchase
Nice to see DCA's AEON line finally get a solid recommendation!
This is my next can for sure any Aeon closed possibly the drop variant
You getting an early 8xx to review like josh did?
Just purchased Noire… should be here later this week 🤞🏽 hoping I like them.
You like them?
I'm a real big fan of the Aeon Closed RT, so I'm looking forward to seeing what DMS' opinion is on the Aeon 2 Closed + the Noir
These look fantastic!! Awesome comparison.
Did you ever take a look at the RT versions of the Aeon?
Given how comfortable the Ether 2 is, I definitely believe these are thee most comfortable headphone you've used. DCA is _really_ good at making comfortable headphones.
Lots of good information to think about and very well presented. That noir seems like a sensible business expense.
Was looking at the Aeon RT Closed, but now I'm wondering if I should step up to the Aeon Noir.
You could probably use an impedance adapter given how flat the impedance curve on these is across the frequency range.
Tubes are literal snake oil
Just so you and the rest of Aeon owners know, if the headband adjusting mechanism got loose, you can screw it to get tighter.
My understanding is that the only difference is the pads which affects tuning
I know it's a strange question but how would you rate a closed back like the Noir against a IEm like the Kinera Nanna? I need something with isolation but I'm not sure where to spend my money.
I’m making the same decision. I bought the Celestee but I’m not in love with it and it lets a lot of sound bleed. Even at moderately low volumes. Now I’m wondering if I should just get a quality iem
Great review. Well done!
You can tighten the screw on the inside and make the strap harder to move.
I just need the second hand prices to drop on the Noir to justify replacing my Focal Elegias that I picked up for $400 with a balanced cable... I think I prefer planars thanks to their image/instrument separation.
How do you like the elegia?
Digging the new studio it's a solid place for shoots.
With regards to the Audeze suspension strap, I emailed Audeze about this within 2 weeks of owning the LCD-X and they sent me a shorter leather strap that gives plenty of room between the strap and the metal.
Hey DMS do you know if Topping L30 would go well with the AEON 2 Noire? Love your vids!
I have these, they play really well. The L30 even on low gain has more than enough power headroom for an aggressive eq
Just to provide some balance, just gotta say, I love the Hirose connectors they use on the headphones; seem way nicer than jacks - but from the standpoint of sourcing cables etc it’s definitely less convenient.
Hart audio cable made me a custom set with no problems. Though not inexpensive
@@JeffJacquesmd Yea I’ve made them before as well, when I sold cables - unlike other connectors of this type like Lemo, these are quite cheap, and nicely made... but a bitch to solder ;P
@@LordVictorHalgaard That’s a key insight, thank you for sharing that!
Thx!
Those A2Cs are for sale btw. Hit me up if you're interested. This is your chance to own something touched by Daddy DMS himself.
I’m looking for a closed back headphone to go with my Hugo2. Currently I have the HE500, which I love (and you mentioned). Which one is closer in sound?
Is this the Aeon 2 Noir?
Look for "Dan Clark Audio AEON 2 Noire" on Thomann
How do both of these compare to the Audeze LCD-2c/LCD-X?
From where did you get the acoustic panels on the back wall? They look fantastic.
Are the Aeon Noire a fitting closed back headphone for gaming? (mostly shooter, need to hear those footsteps)
But still want to enjoy music,... with them.
What amps did you use?
I wonder how these compare to the much cheaper aeon RT/ aeon X closed..
How about Dan Clark Audio Aeon RT compared with Noire?
How about the power requirements? I am considering the Aeon, and I definitely want to use it on the go. I have a HIby R5 and it produces quite a bit of power, but I know the Aeons are hard(ish) to drive. Thanks
Using the Sony WM1A I gave almost enough power. My Hiby R3 can’t drive them adequately. Hope that helps
@@JeffJacquesmd It does, thanks. I think it might work if I use the balanced connection.
@@jamesbittle2138 I’m glad it helps. I should have mentioned that I connected the Aeon 2Cs to the WM1A via the 4.4 connector.
I was hoping you'd look at Aeons! I was thinking of getting RTs though.
Interesting comparison of both
What amp & Dac did you use for reviewing?
Recently sold my A2C. It is unfortunate because I really enjoyed the headphone it was unique in it's comfort and build, but the pads kept warping on me and I could see if I wanted to use them more often I would get destroyed on $60 pad replacements.
The Dekoni Aeon Leather pads keep their shape better and foam inside of them does not start rotating. Very little change in sound as well.
Please, please check out the Focal Celestee - need it for a purchase decision. I've respected your read on headphones ever since your negative take on the Philips X2HR - I bought one anyway ( caught the Zeos hype train) and found out what you were talking about.
Just buy them and return them if you dislike them.
I have a Celestee on the way to compare to the Noir
Hey DMS, have you ever heard the Denon AH-D9200 ? Would be very interested in what you think of this one.
Audiophile greetings from Germany
Im curious how would these compare to the Denon D7200/9200 line. Many says the D9200 is the best closed back in the market.
I've often wondered what those white damping inserts are made of. I would like to make some of my own.
felt
@@chefsteve8381 what type of felt? Thickness? Can you be more specific
Fantastic video, thank you!
How do both of these compare to the Aeon RT/Aeon Closed X (Drop version of RT)? The RT is only $500 compared to the $900 of the Aeon 2 and Noire, so I assume there'd be a difference, but is it worth paying an extra $400 for?
Probably not lmao, you hit the law of diminishing returns at like $200 or something with headphones.
@@FiniteCS I just bought the Noire yesterday because I already own a mid-fi pair of headphones, so I'd rather own a hi-fi as my second pair instead.
@@DMS3TV Microsuede? I don't see that on their website...am I tripping?
Would the Noire be a good upgrade for my DT-1990? If so, how do you think they stack up? Thanks!
Hello!
The same question here
Could you compare the Sony MDR-Z7 to the Aeon Noir?
I like the comfort of AEON as well. I like to hear the new NOIR in the near future.
Looking to pick one of these up or a used TH900... any pointers for me?
What about the Aeon closed X from drop ? I cannot find any review of this one ? Thanks !
Dated, snatch the Aeon Flow RT Closed over the Closed X.
Any ideas which to recommend as a compliment to HD660S?
how do they compare against the Ether CX?
Kind of surprised since you've said you're not a fan of Harman target. Anyway, it would be super cool to do a set of measurements with the different damping materials, it would certainly be a good reference for people looking at these headphones.
I was super surprised too. I may do additional measurements.
@@DMS3TV Maybe it's because part of the fun of headphones is different sound signatures. I am not a Harman fan either, but still enjoy a few pairs of more bassy headphones from time to time.
A bit late but what happens if you put the Noire pads on the 2 Closed? Does it become a Noire?
how are these for violin/ classical music ? what about for gaming
If you had a DT1990 would you buy either a Focal Clear or Aeon Noire to complement them?
The same question here!
we need a comparison to Aeon RT!
Wanna ask what headphone should I take the akg k361 or the mh751 (the akg is twice the price)
I think I’m going to get the noir. How much power do they need?
600ish mW at @ 15Ohm for 98Db
Would you choose the noire or focal radiance?
Pls help I’m trying to make a decision and I’m flustered
