"She Sells Sanctuary" is as perfect a rock song as I have ever heard.
Thanks for your analysis of the vocal, Fil.
I always wondered why I liked Ian Ashbury's vocals so much.

Years don't lie, but to still be able to pass snuff vocally is impressive for a singer who typically pushed the upper limits of his range when he was much younger. Of course you can hear the differences but the soul is still there.... and so to is the appreciation for the great music!

I'm amazed at the ones whose voices get continually better with age -- like Monkee Micky Dolenz for example.
(My *own* range & vocal quality has radically improved over the decades since I *stopped* taking voice lessons
and *started* drinking -- though I doubt I would fare better now than in 2005 when I foolishly told my mates in
Cauhaus [th-cam.com/video/-r3ih9ElSzM/w-d-xo.html] I could do the vox if they wanted to cover "...Sanctuary" live!)

The combination of the middle Eastern guitar sound and the singers fantastic vocals made this song the classic rock anthem it is. It makes the hair on my next tingle every time I hear it. Superb.

Your demonstration shows beautifully how components of a song work like the components of a poem: While creating meaning together with the lyrics, the music and vocals also furnish the underlying structural elements that aid not only execution of the song, but also its interpretation, as you point out--accents, rhythm, etc. So cool! Thanks for a terrific analysis!

    YEEESSSS!! The CULT!! 💖
This is the first song by the Cult I ever heard, and I always loved the music video-- with Ian in his frilly shirt, tights, and scarf, (seemingly) dancin' on glass! All the weird close ups of his mouth on the mic...lol! I love the distinct tone of his voice and his words in She Sells Sanctuary, and just the vibe of the whole song. It was so much of what was right about the 80s 💕
And Billy Duffy isn't talked about enough in the guitar world! He wrote some seriously cool, driving, songs.
I have to admit I was chomping at the bit, hoping it was an analysis of Fire Woman--talk about smokestack lightning!!
🤤 (maybe when you revisit? * wink wink nudge nudge *)
I laughed SO hard at your voice demo, but it was after being really impressed with your pitch just before that. It's so important to be able to go a bit ham and still illustrate a point well-- it makes it! Seeing what it is that makes his voice unique was fascinating!
...I was in such a tizzy I wrote WAY too much, haha! Time to go watch some Cult videos 😍

Such a good and underrated band. I remember when they were all over college radio with 'Wildflower' and 'Lil Devil' and I very much liked that harder sound on the "Electric" album. I always liked Ian's voice and, as has been pointed out elsewhere, he probably went all-in long enough to damage himself. But to paraphrase one of the guys in Slipknot, "We take days off out lives every night to entertain you'. Thanks for digging up a memory Fil.

Awesome song man! This was a staple on “progressive night” at the local clubs when I was in college back in the 80s. The opening riff always reminded me of bagpipes. Hi Fil,
how you doing? First at all, congratulations for your work and for the accuracy and passion you put into analyzing each song. I played the bass, for many years, in a Cult covers band. I had a lot of fun 'cause their songs are beautiful and structurally well done. What I particularly like are the "instrumental interludes" that embellish and characterize many Cult songs, such as for example: "She sells sanctuary", "Rain", "Love removal machine", "Fire woman", etc... Keep it up Fil! Thank you very much. Great job. Greetings from Italy.

Nice to see an expert value Ian's singing. In the early years when Ian sang (Southern Death Cult), he wasn't singing, he was screaming, and it was out of tone a lot. He must have had singing lessons around 85/86, because during/after the Love album his voice (and I am talking about live performances) became much and much better. She Sells Sanctuary blew me away when I first heard it on the radio in 1985, then I saw them live at Pinkpop '86, and have been a huge fan of them since. CFFC

Fil, you provided so much in your musical analysis. I enjoyed listening to the Cult's great performance(in the link you provided)as I've enjoyed their music. I'd always thought that as a vocalist, Ian Astbury was rather underrated. I saw him with Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger as "The Doors of the 21st Century" in concert in 2002. To me, Ian proved to be versatile as a vocalist in the way he'd adapted his style and delivery of the Doors' songs. However, it seemed like the majority of the audience had already rated Ian before he started--and it wasn't in his favor. Even my friend who took me the concert said, "They don't sound the same; and the singer doesn't sound like Jim Morrison." Anyway, I also appreciated your vocal and guitar demonstrations. In the latter, great explanation of the use of call and response and the importance of accenting rhythms. If I'm not mistaken, this accenting rhythms on the offbeat--which you mentioned is common in rock and hard rock music--is a type of syncopation. Because I'm a musician, you really had me thinking musically here. I'm truly grateful for your getting me to do that...thanks, Fil!

Breaking out the Fender to play and demonstrate those little bits and pieces really ups the quality of your analysis videos. We enjoy it very much. 🤘PS and your singing too!

This is my favorite video from you yet!! Please break out your guitar and vocals more often. For non-musicians such as myself they are great ways to better understand your commentary. Thanks, Fil!

What a coincidence. I watched that video for the first time not long ago. I didn't even know it was them and thought i was watching a cover.
I think it was ACDC introduced me to that triplet guitar pattern. I forget which songs use it but it shows up in several of their songs.

How about doing an analyses video on the band "Crash Test Dummies"? Brad Roberts' voice is really different for sure!!

What a damn great Rock band Fil! I was only listening to these guys the other day....AGAIN! I absolutely love their style of rock...Ian’s unique vocals with an amazingly tight rhythm section along with Billy’s sensational guitar playing! Pure Cult is my favourite album of theirs.....man did that CD get some play time in my car! Awesome Fil! Cheers Mario! 😎🤘👌
