Are Nokia Investors Crazy or Genius?

  • Nokia had its day in the sun until one day the sun stopped shining. After losing their leadership in smartphones, they've been trying to gain leadership in segments such as mobile and network infrastructure with a dose of cloud computing for good measure. These are all being shored up by the Nokia Technology cash cow that provides a 100% gross margin - pure profits - and an operating margin of above 70%. Contrast this to the single-digit operating margins of the other segments and profitability trends that are moving in the wrong direction. Is Nokia a growth stock or value stock? It's neither, and don't count on that dividend to stick around for too long based on its track record of jumping around all over the place. If you're looking for a proper growth stock, you're better off finding one that's actually growing. If you're looking for value, find a company with better profitability metrics and some consistency in paying out a dividend. NOK stock may be beaten down but it's not one we're interested in at any price.

Clickbait title aside, we've just presented some facts and analyzed them. Hopefully your shares do well. We want all investors to make money, and we don't have FOMO if we miss out on some opportunity as we inevitably will.

They probably have some half-assed attempt at 3DP now that everyone else has had a go at it.

Maybe people thought the contract for them to build the service o the moon would reinvent them not just slow the blimp by a month

One wonders what impact Starlink might have on these network/mobile infrastructure providers.

I have a (thankfully) small position in Nokia, seemed tempting at the time! 😅 Enjoyed your analysis and have subscribed

Thank you for the sub! A lot of times these "meme stocks" - if Nokia is still considered a meme stock? - can seem very appealing and blind people to the downsides.

I loved the HP48GX calculator. It had apps. It was kind of ahead of it's time. The problem with it was the pins. It could not be serviced. Once the pins broke you had to get another one. We used them as data collectors connected to total stations long before bluetooth.

Those used to be necessary tools for a university education. Maybe it's all apps now?

the NCEES kind of dumbed downed calculators with Engineers. They became afraid calcs were being used to steal proprietary exam questions. I still use HP calcs, just not as souped up as the 48gx. They have a good feel. Nothing out there compares to the click you get when you press a key. I am a bit nostalgic about HP.@@Nanalyze

You're an OG for sure. Agree about HP. They used to be one of the great tech names. They tried "going back to the garage," then Carly came in with some bad mojo.

I remember Nokia from the 90s. But today, owning it is the same as going through waterboarding torture. It needs to go bankrupt and it's assets sold, and it's name shall never be spoken in history again
